Off-Leash Doberman Training: The Recall Command

- If you want to do off-leash activities with your Doberman, you're going to need to train a very strong recall command. This video is a step-by-step on how to train a rock-solid recall in your Doberman. This will make you more confident should you choose to take your Doberman out off their leash. This technique, if trained correctly, should have your Doberman Pinscher running to you every single time you use it whether you're out in public or at home. This is probably the most challenging command to teach but also such an important one. Remember to keep your pet in a safe and controlled environment at all times while practicing this command!

I trained my Doberman to respond to 2 different commands for recall.
When walking off leash at a park or a public place, I simply smack my lips twice quickly and he instantly comes to my side.
At my home in the country, I raise my hands in the air like signaling a touchdown. He can be exploring several hundred yards away and comes running to me after that signal. It's really enjoyable for my dog and for me to watch.
These 2 signals work great for us because my Doberman is always aware of what I'm doing.

@@andrewzapata9420 Yes... He's very well socialized with dogs and other people and he always follows my signals. His only weakness is if he sees a ball rolling (softball, volleyball, etc.). When this happens, I loudly yell his name to recapture his attention and he comes right back. I usually get a look from him as if to say "but Dad, it's a ball".
@@keithdittmar1701 yeah my 8 month old I’m struggling with…. Ran into another dog and his owner ( poodle) they didn’t like that…. He’s too much on the leash so I let him off leash, but he’s so playful and energic that any dog he sees, he jets for him
I used an emergency recall years ago when my dober got out and was running on the road. I squatted down and started bellowing weirdly, the weird noise grabbed his attention and then he immediately ran over to lick my face and I hustled him back into the garden.
I got a doberman because of you thank you so much for such an amazing dog.

Off leash distance work I used a training collar. A cool tip I got from a military dog trainer. Use the signals like positive reinforcement ala cliker training.
I did distance off leash work beginning with down. You get the down the dog is under command. It boosts compliance with the come. My preference is to add "schnell" if the situation is urgent. House schnell, down schnell or come.
The doberman is brilliant and will obey with trust. They have a nobel character and entrust their safety to you. I'm alive today because of that character.
They're such an obedient breed. Great video.

The praise can be very high in excitement, but also calm stability is also a reward. Dogs feel both.
We just got a dobbie at 8 weeks old. She'll be 13 weeks tomorrow. This is something I think someone needs to bring up. Trust! It's seems like once mine figured out She could trust me she's more in tune to me. Still working on issues but she's getting better. I thought I got a psycho dog and still having psycho moments at night but she getting there. Being calm is important as well. Ive started using a softer voice and that seems to help with her attention. First dobbie puppy owner. Be patient. They are a handle full. Good luck everyone with a new pup and enjoy.

I use COME with a pointing finger down if needed. We only use it to call her while out of the house. I also use a long range beep collar when she's out of earshot. 2 beeps and she comes running in my last known direction....even wrestling with another dog lol
The other day while out at the park behind our house I was doing distance commands on a 50ft line, when a fox comes out of the bushes, looks at Nyx, Nyx looks at the fox, then me...Leave it....Come, and she was by my side. Her ball and rubs were her jackpot reward there. Like you said. Constancy is key.

I love the recall video.. my Doberman will come with a small light whistle, no words, just a light whistle, she’s so smart and comes running in a split second, ( I love this breed ) Arlo looks to being very well with the recall.
With three dobes, I use their names a lot with recall. Its just a necessity. But the way their names are said helps them to know I want them to come to me. I repeat the name several times with an uplifted, happy tone and they come running :) Great video as always!

My border collie shepherd girl Jezebel taught me how to work with dogs. I got her at 4 yrs old. She had several behavioral issues when I got her and yet she quickly became a solid companion. She learned so many essential skills by 3 simple commands. Come, Oi and a finger snap. I was a confident, consistent and calm leader and she knew her place in my pack. A vocal command followed by the snap ensured she would follow through. I told her what to do and always rewarded her with love. Consistent food reward doesn't work. Look at how food rewards work for kids. The only punishment she got was a stern OI! Dogs need to understand their place in our relationships. I had to put her to rest this spring 2022 and I count myself lucky to learn the skills needed for a well balanced, happy dog. I just found out about a year old doberman female who needs a place to thrive. Thank you for your advice and confirmation of the ability to raise well adjusted, well behaved dogs. There are no bad dogs, just some uninformed or ignorant owners. Woof!

Grace got loose yesterday and returned after first command given... I was impressed her distraction was substantially and I was concerned. 👍👍
That's great to hear that Grace listened so well - great training on your part! Yes, "recall" would sound pretty close to "recon", so maybe that's not the best for your situation. Plenty of other ideas out there though!

I've seen a huge difference in the doberman population in the last year, I use to never see them anywhere and now I see at leat 1 per week! Would LOVE to see a video about training my crazily-distracted dobie to stay till she gets a release command. I live in a small town where she can be off leash all the time but if I walk into a store and want her to stay outside for just 5 minutes it is impossible, she whines and struggles to get in.

Hello From Canada! Love your vids. My boy was born 2 weeks ago so really excited to bring him home next month. Your vids are my go to dobie bible lol. One thing I'd love to see is a posting video tutorial from you. There was a neat one using mole foam for posting ears (looks more natural...ish? no white tape etc...minimizes the ppl judging you lol) but would like to see your method. Oh also maybe a video on Wobblers syndrome as although low risk (5.5% chance apparently) 50% of known cases are in dobermans.

HELPFUL TEETHING TIP TO TRY
I’ve had my 9week old dobie for almost 2 weeks now. I taught him early on not to bite however I know he’s teething when he’s desperately nippy. The only thing (no toys have worked) I have found is empty plastic water bottles! I take off the lid and the ring under the lid to avoid choking hazard. His teeth are not yet strong enough to break holes into it so he chews as much as he needs. I supervise always to ensure he isn’t tearing or swallowing the plastic, and this has been suchhhhh a helpful and simple solution. Hopefully this works as great for whoever tries it as it is for my baby dobie!!!

As Beckman said it in his videos (no sponsoring of course, just informing and sharing and I talk about my sources, that's all) :
I think it lasts one point to your points about recall, and an essential one.
It is the command !
The dog has to know that it is an order, not a thing he can obey when he is in a good mood.
And to make that real, you have to "punish" (I want to tell give a sanction, I am french...) your dog when he behaves badly.
Each tim he doesn't come back, you have to punish and get the come back.
ONLY at that point with all the other points, your dog will know and act the recall. Because in reality, with so much more interesting distractions, your dog will never come back, for sure, only with exceptional dog.

I like to use my dogs name. I feel like it's implied...I've also thought about using a secondary command "here".
I've taught a dog more than one command for the same behavior before.
My current dog doesn't have a solid recall and I'm looking forward to doing this at the park and around the house. My previous dog had such good recall I could walk her offleash and make her stop on a dime. Not to be confused with "heel" which is a command I never understood how to teach her...she was super smart so it was a handler limitation. I consider myself an intermediate enthusiast. :)
Her impeccable recall made off leash walking possible without heel because whenever a car would come I'd just command her to sit or recall her back. It's amazing the workarounds a team can come up with if the handler is not advanced. Definitely worked for us. It's looking like my current dog doesn't completely understand heel due to my skill level but we are showing more promise as my ability to convey my desire to her gets better. She walls quite nice with a prong or choke collar. lol
I'd say it's a 70 percent chance I'll figure out how to teach her offleash heel but that 30 percent does feel like a mountain. Once again it's handler skill level not her ability or intelligence.
"Intermediate enthusiast" haha - love it! They're definitely ready and eager to learn all we can teach them - sometimes we're the only ones standing in the way of that! Definitely agree with you there. Thankfully, Dobermans love to please so that makes it easier on us!

My friend's extremely hyperactive dog is terrible at responding to commands (she has some brain damage and was a street dog for her first 6 years of life) if she's distracted, so he's started bellowing "oi, mate!" in the most ridiculous accent as a last-ditch safety recall. We joke she only comes back to see what demon has possessed him, but whatever reason she returns, she still always does!

I would like to start working on a recall command with my F1 Dobie, Mika. (She’s 50% Doberman, 50% Gordon Setter) One time, a young child left my front door open and Mika bolted out the door. I’m lucky we live in a neighborhood 😟 we tried calling her but she just kept running as if she were playing in our huge backyard. The only way I could get her back home was to get her attention and run away from her. She chased me all the way back home!

I subconsciously ignore the fact that she’s not 100% Doberman and isn’t as clingy as one. Gordon Setters are hunting dogs that travel far from their owners to look for game. The only reason we got an F1 was because of your warning about their poor cardiovascular health. Gordons looks exactly like Dobermans but they have longer/finer fur and they have a better heart. Mika looks just like a Purebred European Doberman.
I have learned with my 8 yr old red female that it takes a bit longer to teach her new things such as a recall off leash!

Love your Channel. I'm a working line German Shepherd girl but I also love Dobermans. Your passion for your dogs is what every dog owner should possess. I'm curious if you ever encountered any breeders when looking for a European Doberman that would not sell to people that did not do IPO. Here where I live in California I've heard of a breeder that many people consider rude and offensive because he was very dismissive of people that were interested in a doberman but did not intend to formally work them. Have you ever encountered that? I know with Shepherds that can happen but most breeders will politely refer you to someone that sells pet quality Shepherds or sell you one of their own dogs that is more of a medium Drive

Lay on the floor and have Arlo's toy just out of your reach. Act like you're struggling to get the toy. Even tell the toy to "come". I did this with Sammy's toy. He walked over to me like "what the heck are you doing?" But then, as I continued to call his toy and be within a couple of inches of reaching it, he picked up the toy and brought it to me. He did that the first time I tried it. Hasn't happened since so I guess it was a fluke. lol Another funny thing I did was act like something grabbed my leg and was dragging me down. My living room is large and the sofa is in the middle. He was in front of the sofa and I was behind it, so he couldn't see what was attacking me. But he saw me look down and with a scared expression on my face, I jerked and dipped down like something grabbed me. He came flying over to see what grabbed me. :-)

I.P.O. training! We walked across a bear last year, in upper Wisconsin, and I was far more scared than her. She came back immediately.
I needed this command in my life. My vet just built a new office and they haven't put up and enclosed, fenced in place to put dogs. My y Dobie, Athena, will not pee on a leash. I have a really big back yard so she has plenty of room to train. And she is professionally trained on Off-Leash for two weeks Board and Train at 16 weeks. But, I needed to get a urine sample last week. The new office is on a corner of two busy roads, with road construction on both. I was terrified to let her Off-Leash because there was so much car and road noise and she kept looking around. If I could get this on point, I would feel more comfortable. Thank you so much for going a step further. P. S. Is your new baby a little boy? I kept waiting for you to tell us. He's going to be as beautiful as your other two, but I was hoping for a little girl with giant red curls! I bet your wife was too. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I make a natural whistle when my dobi has disappeared into the back garden, but when I want her to come back into the house I clap my hands together …this sort of routine didn’t take no time at all for her to learn ,as she’s so eager to learn …. When she comes back with dirty paws ,she sits down and waits for me to get her special towel …then I only need to say right paw , left paw and then she stands up and I clean her back paws the same way …right paw ,left paw and she lifts the paw I asked her to lift and o ly then the young lady is allowed to move from vestibule into the house lol 👍

How do you feel about an e-collar for recall training?
I think e-collars are a great tool for breeds that are prey driven like a hound or terrier. They often need a strong distraction. Most Dobermans will respond to your attention and praise.
How do you feel about e-collars for recall training? My 1yr old doberman excelled greatly when I began using an e-collar on the vibration setting combined with hand command.

I'd love to adopt a rescue Dobie. Any idea of the success rate if they've come from an unknown or ill treatment situation. Any help much appreciated. I have had dobies in my younger years now a senior.
Hi John, is it possible for a doberman to be in a car for several hours? Im asking because I'd like to go to my family that acually lives in another country and take my future doberman with me... If that's possible for them of course, and not stressful or anything
Any Doberman is like a soldier so they fit to your body language up to space u wanna show them ..45 y.o having dogs for 39 years of my life as a pharmacist I can tell dobies are the only dogs like soldier they are fitting to you if u wanna feel like commander.. otherwise they never feel u are unhappy sick or feeling terrible….rest of the dogs will definitely know.. only your soldiers have no idea what you are feeling.. although I’ve my 5 years old Doberman non cut ears and tails in Antalya turkey swimming once a day at Mediterranean Sea and having huge garden but of course sleeping with me ….she has no idea no care I weather if I’m sick or not… get a Dalmatian or any dog that can smell your feelings to understand you but never get a Doberman unless you are a freaking protector commander… it’s my love to make my lovely Mars to live happily but do not make it your your destiny please… .
