Why Do the Mariners Continue to Whiff on Big Offensive Acquisitions?

  • Over the past three offseasons, the Mariners have acquired several big-name hitters who were coming off good years but went on to see significant regression in Seattle, including Jesse Winker, Kolten Wong, and now seemingly Jorge Polanco and Mitch Garver. Why does this keep happening despite the strong track records of the players being brought in, and is it as simple as a front office or coaching issue? Ty and Colby try to answer that and more on Mailbag Monday.

    There has been something rotten in the hitting program for a while. I have no idea where to point the finger. Ms batters can't read pitches. Guys like France and Julio are guessing too much and nobody, no other team I've ever watched, guesses wrong as often as Seattle hitters do.
    Im not proud to say so, but i played a lot of mens slow oitch in my 20s and 30s. I was a line drive guy with gap power in games. I could hit a hit ball 350' or so in practice but never did so in games. Anyways there was one venue we played a lot that had shorter fences, like 280-285 ish. They had a one home run limit and any balls iver the fence after that were outs. They also used restricted flight balls.
    So bottom line was that there was about a 1/500 chance of me hitting a ball iver the fence on those fields. All i had to do was play my game. Line drives find gaps on any field. Just hit the ball hard, man. I couldnt get past the mental part though. I hit like crap every time we went there. The short fences and slightly squeezed together outfield were so in my head. I even hit 2 strike foul balls a couple of times for strikeouts.
    Im telling that dumb story because it seems like T Mobile park could be in the heads of too many, including Ms hitters. They need to trust themselves and trust the fact that hitting the ball hard will work out more iften than not, even at T Mobile.
    And yeah, im pissed about Clase too. I cant get it, and i wont get it. Let Raley hit againat lefties.

    Graver and polanco seemed pretty safe but I think the mariners are cursed to have bad offenses. Ever since wasting Felix’s career with no offense

    I blame a bad hitters home park. But I also oversimplify sometimes.

    • @shawnuel
      @shawnuel Před měsícem +1

      I don't think that is an oversimplification. The park/batters eye, and environmental issues in April thru mid-June are the only identifiable reasons that make any real sense.

    Garver was 0 for 34 at Safeco prior to coming here.

    I agree with you guys on pretty much everything except for the hitting coach discussion. I don't think it's simply just up to the players to produce. There's plenty of philosophies that a hitting coach would instill in the hitters that could screw them up (pitch selection in certain counts, emphasis on pulling the ball/trying to go the other way, poor preparation for pitchers scouting reports, etc). I'd be really interested to see the Mariners team hitting stats in the DeHart era

    I feel like 2021 was absolutely horrible for the expectations of this team within the eyes of some fans. All they look at is the 90 wins and then suddenly expect the team to now be a 100 win team within a couple years. The 2021 Mariners had no business winning 80 games let alone the 90. It was a rebuild year that nearly got them into the playoffs. That team should have probably won 75 games and then 2022 they should have won something like 83-85.
    2023 was always in the plan to be the first year of actually competing post rebuild. This is now the window and so far the team is sitting in first place a third of the way through the season which is a lot better than being 7 games out of first. Locklear now getting the call up to AAA, Young and Ford doing well in AA, Modesto is easily the most stacked minor league team and those guys should be getting a call up to Everett pretty soon. The bats are not far off.

      Exactly, it’s way more accurate to look at run differentials for all those years to see out progress.

    Pshhhh Ty and Colby doing all this analysis and can’t figure out what’s wrong with the M’s acquisition. It pretty obvious guys. Robinson Cano cursed his position when he got traded.

    • @tysonhartle2439
      @tysonhartle2439 Před měsícem +1

      Cano and Cruz are pretty much the only big offensive players we have traded for that panned out in the last 10-15 years. Geno did OK, but not anything like he was the 3-4 years prior. Teoscar, crap. Wong, crap. Winker...showed some signs but nothing like his previous years. It goes all the way back to Kevin Mitchell in the 90's. HR leader a few years in a row, comes to the M's and hits what, 19HR's? If that? Very frustrating.

    I think we’ve seen enough of Garver and Polanco. Sub .200, negative WAR, below average OBP, and SLG. Like you guys said, it’s been 54 games. That’s more than enough time figure out who a player is. Potential has to turn into production at some point, otherwise these guys are who they are right now.

    Why can't Jerry and company bring in someone who CAN identify hitting talent or find a way to help them acclimate better? I always wonder if it's just because they find dudes who just don't want to be in PNW climate/culture/area.

    A fun game to play every offseason is to pick 3-5 mid tier FAs and bet on who will have seasons better or worse than the last one.
    When you play around in the 1 year, 2 year deal market like the Mariners have, every player has a relatively high risk of not working out. I think honestly bad luck explains the vast majority of it.

    • @derekwoods4026

      And the ballpark and a bunch of other stuff. I think it's a tougher park to hit in, and early difficulties just compound on each other. Plus a deep lineup stresses pitchers, which can give hitters an advantage, while a struggling lineup paired with good pitching means every hitter comes up more often in high stakes situations and faces the best pitching the other team can send out. Once one or two guys really get going, the whole lineup should see easier pitches and improve.

    Its hard when the Mariners won 116 games at this Stadium among others to say that the offense couldn't have success at this Field.
    However, the playoff apperances and wins between The Kingdome and T-Mobile Park is astronomical right?
    Should the Mariners have stuck with a dome?
    I love the current Stadium for the experience and the view, but if it is truly a factor that may be affecting this franchise, would it be worth considering a new Stadium?

    If i was the Ms, Id simply trade for Colin Holderman + Tanner Scott to get the BP going. Then swing big (or little) with 1-2 bats of: Luis Robert, Tyler O'niell, JJ Bleday, Kerry Carpenter, Luis Garcia (Nats 2B), Gavin Sheets, Tommy Pham, Willy Adames, Mark Vientos, Bryan De La Cruz, orrrrr Otto Lopez. Wont happen though. All of these bats are from teams not competing for a WS this year or in the next couple of years, are upcoming FA, or dont have a certain role on teams in the coming years.

    The problem isn't Garver & Polanco it has been the hitting philosophy that creates big holes in the hitter's swing. Polanco & Garver has a lot to adjust to, the whole team is under-producing it's the league pitching to the team's weakness,

  • @ericcarlson924
    @ericcarlson924 Před měsícem

    Can't blame ballpark for garver. He is hitting better at home. I think it's the philosophy. Guys are in-between with swinging or taking because of their dominant the zone bullshit. See pitch hit pitch. Don't worry about pitch counts. Just swing at the ball you can hit
