  • The president likes to criticize Trump for being too cozy with his fellow billionaires. But Biden’s biggest backers are worth roughly $170 billion-more than triple the collective net worth of Trump’s top tycoons.

    What if every single person was only allowed to donate $50,000 - how would that change the US political system?

      It's supposed to only be like $6,600 but there's a loophole for political parties

    • @Leto2ndAtreides
      @Leto2ndAtreides Před 6 dny

      Would likely be even worse than it is now.
      The rise of the internet already empowered politicians to pull in tons of micro-donations. Which means that as long as they can push the buttons of dimwits, they no longer need to listen to big donors as much.
      Which is really an increase in the power of politicians (who can play with people's emotions) rather than an increase in the power of the voters.
      The practical fact is that you need people with power to hold people with power in check... And now politicians are increasingly not being kept in check - even though almost none of these people are themselves leadership material.

      There are billionaires on the Republican side too. It's mostly ideological.
      The real problem is that nobody is in a place to be sure what is best for the future of the country. And in the absence of views grounded in reality, people can only go in the direction of their own biases.

      You've seen the outcome of San Francisco spending hundreds of millions a year on homelessness right?
      Although that problem was caused in large part by the courts making insane decisions that limited the city governments' ability to solve the problem.
      Entrepreneurs have tried to directly address homelessness too... And again been blocked by governments and laws built for ideal circumstances. smh.

      The regular people and their micro-donations are one of the biggest sources of donations, and thus one of the biggest sources of trouble in the post-internet age.
      Since it means that politicians that can push people's buttons can get more backing than they could before.
      Even $10 from a lot of dumb people can start to add up pretty fast.

    All things considered, these donations sound microscopical relative to those people's net worths. And they don't quite seem aimed at getting Biden to do specific things.
    Of course, making laws is in any case, the responsibility of Congress. A President only has direct power over so many things.
