Amoena, citrina, parasitica, Pottsii etc would all fall under the name 'Verticillata". The same way that Macrophylla AlbomarginataIs now Latifolia.

  • @sooth15
    @sooth15 Před 2 lety

    I have a Rebecca and it's struggling. It was the first cutting (in a group I bought) to root, but then when I planted it in soil, it did not adapt well, and I think 90% of the roots died. I think it took something like 5 months for the leaves to start looking healthy and plump again. Then it started to grow a new vine, but it died off. It only recently put out one small new leaf, and last time I looked at it, it was looking like it might go yellow. I also bought a camphorifolia on a whim, because the price was decent, and it was a large cutting, but it got red spider mites, I had rooting issues, and now I'm down to 2 leaves on mostly bare stems :( I also got dolichosparte in the same order with the camphorifolia. That one was suggested to grow in semi-hydro. It's doing just fine for me, but in over a year it has not done anything. No new vines, no new leaves not even any nodes that seem to be waking up. But it still looks happy and healthy.

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  Před 2 lety

      Gosh what a shame! I repotted all of mine into a mix of orchid bark/perlite/a sandy peat mix/worm castings with a bit of dolomite lime and they seem to really like it. It's a very loose mix that doesn't pack even if I squeeze it. The only one that hasn't shown growth yet is the dolichosparte but it was the smallest cutting of all with no new growth when it arrived. We'll see. 😅

    Great haul, thanks for the information! You'll be pleased when you bloom your hoya thomsonii! It's got absolutely wonderful strong fragrance that I adore! It needs a cool and bright light (I keep mine on my south-facing windowsill ) to bloom. Thanks for sharing and happy growing 😀!

    I hope your Thomsonii makes it this time! But I dunno .... the species being from the Himalayas makes me think it likes some elevation? So maybe you can take it on an excursion, like a day out, to the Eiffel Tower and maybe Montmartre etc? Perhaps the Swiss Alps are nearby? Or maybe place a print of the Himalayas behind the Thomsonii in order to make it feel at home? Perhaps it likes cold weather? But I go on too long about it. But really an excursion would be nice!

    I only have a bunch of different Carnosa forms (in my country it's hard to get other Hoyas) and I also noticed that a lot of people are also selling Hoya Carnosa varieties and the true especies as cultivars or other species with splash or different forms, Carnosa polka dot, freckles, stardust and more and more names are actually the "true carnosa" behaving differently, mine is an 100 year old one from a woman that brought it from Italy, every cutting I have looks different, splashy, really dark, tiny or big leaves, and I have them in the same place too, I too recommend doing a bunch of deep scientific research (seeing the exemplars on old photos, descriptions, manuscripts etc...) before buying any Hoya!

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  Před 2 lety

      I'm not familiar with that Hoya so I can't say if it's H. verticillata or not. Anything called Hoya parasitica is actually going to be Hoya verticillata. This is a common misnomer for verticillata (so is H. acuta).

    • @betsybegonia
      @betsybegonia  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, you have to be able to see it with your own eyes to know if it's the clone you want. As for H. nicholsoniae vs. H. verticillata it's the blooms that give them away--H. verticillata is white, H. nicholsoniae is yellow, more or less.
