    From my understanding no plant actually benefits from being truly root bound, I think the concept came from the idea that a stressed plant wants to survive and as a half ditched effort will flower in order go to seed. This I think happens out in nature but our houseplants are typically grown in nurseries and wont behave the same. That being said there are many many many houseplants that do prefer to be somewhat "pot" bound, meaning they prefer to fit snuggly in a pot as opposed to having lots of space in the pot but without being suffocated like a "root" bound plant. I really hope that made sense. Your Hoyas are stunning btw! Thank you for sharing! You really are fun to watch!

    I love that you often know the history of a plant, or interesting facts about certain species. I’d love to see a video where you talk about interesting facts that you’ve learned through research. An example being that I learned from you why alocasia amazonica is named that, despite not having anything to do with the Amazon.

    I watch a bit of Summer Rayne Oaks and she describes hoyas as "liking to be root bound" because most are epiphytes so they end up living in rocky crags or the sorts with little soil. I don't have evidence either but her reasoning is enough for me!

    HOYA-O-BOYA!
    Thanks for sharing all your Hoyas. AWESOME!
    I gave gotten a lot of small Hoya non-rooted cuttings. I propagated them in water. Took a long time, but 100% successful. They are really growing very well this summer.
    I went to Lowe's last week and bought Golden, Neon and Cebu Blue Pothos. Gorgeous, huge, full hanging baskets. This week I bought a Hoya Rubra. It too is G,H,F hanging basket.

    Great video! I have a hoya carnosa splash that I got as a cutting 17 years ago it started blooming in year 5 (2003) and has bloomed every year since from May to October. The only reason I repotted it this year (March 2020) was, 6 older leaves turned yellow at the same time. It has 30 peduncles and counting.
    I realise that you cannot see the plant, I can send a picture, but root bound (for me) is the way to go if you want it to produce lots of leaves and flower consistently.

  • @AutomHatter
    @AutomHatter Před 4 lety

    Well aren't you an absolute delight!
    I'm new here and pretty new to Hoyas, and I had also heard about Hoyas needing to be root bound to flower. When I got mine as a 6 leaf cutting, I planted it into a decent sized pot (10") for its size and stuck it in the brightest indirect light in my house. It grew a TON over one year, increasing its size by at least 5x. When it was about 2 years old it gave me a single flower cluster. Fast forward one more year to this spring and it has exploded with flowers. Over 30 flower peduncles.
    So all in all, I don't believe it is root bound, I still water it as often as I always have and it isn't showing any signs of being root bound. I think it would have taken longer than 3 years for a 6 leaf cutting to outgrow a 10" pot. But maybe I am wrong, it is a monster plant now. Haha

    @miao2572 Před 5 lety +2

    I also agree about the rootbound theory. I think it has more to do with water and root health. Rootbound plants tend to dry out faster and most plant keepers tend to overwater. This happens even more with hoya since folks tend to use regular potting soil with them. I repotted mine this year in better media and a couple plants that have been growing peduncles with no flowers bloomed for the first time!

  • @l.beukema8570
    @l.beukema8570 Před 5 lety

    Thank you for the tour! It was very interesting. Your enthusiasm is really contagious!
    My theory on the roots of Hoya is that they prefer to be in humid AIR, because that is where they naturally grow generally speaking, in the air on a tree in a humid climate.
    Propagating in a very humid and warm environment works very well, even without putting a cutting in a medium or water. Just warm and humid air is enough, or at least that is my experience. So because we do not have such a climate in the Netherlands, I like to create this for them in a pot. I think the most important is that there is there is AIR in the pot with high humidity. So vaporized water, not water as such. Water in fluid form can rot the roots more easy. As long as it is humid air that is around the roots, the Hoya feels at home. By putting bark and perlite in the medium, it creates air pockets that are humid, not a water reservoir. I hope I am making sense :)
    I agree that Hoya do not necessarily prefer being rootbound, allthough I do think they can tolerate it well. We repotted my moms Hoya Carnosa of over 30 years old the other day. It was completely root bound and still did fairly well. We now put it in a bigger pot on a medium of bark, potting soil and perlite. I am so curious to see how it will do!
    I think Hoya like to have a lot of space around the roots, for the same reason, that they can be in vaporized water that is in between the medium. The more the better :) I put my Hoya in orchid pots, which are transparant so it is easy for me to see if they are still humid or if they like a rinse :)

    Hi Betsy! You have a great Hoya collection. It's so nice that you give all of the names. I've had a beautiful Hoya for years that started out as cuttings from my Mom and Sister and I didn't know what it was. Now, I believe, it is a Hoya Carnosa. It bloomed for me twice, but hasn't bloomed again in over a year and it's in the same spot. When it first bloomed it was still in water propagation. I love your Hoya Bella, david cummingii and lacunosa for their flowering abilities. I'd really like to find them. I'm more into the foliage, too, but flowers are a bonus! It was fun seeing a quick look at your living room, kitchen and terrace. It appears that your veranda is a really nice size. I'd love to see a tour of all of your plants, living quarters and terrace. I loved this longer video and would watch anything that you want to upload! You're so much fun to watch! Thank you for sharing!

  • @Rayxster
    @Rayxster Před 4 lety

    I do kinda support the theory of plants (not all but many, including Hoya) producing bloom whenever they are root boud, or in generally bad conditions, I see it quite often in Orchids.
    My Mum have a Pink Princess that was like, 8 or 9 years old, never repotted, it was dyyyyingggg, leaves turning yellow, root bound to hell and back, BUT it was blooming like crazy! I decided to save it, it took me over an hour to free the roots, they were like solid wood at this point. But I got in a new and bigger pot with new nice soil, aaand it hasn't bloomed since... it's producing massive amount of new growth, and trailing all over the place and is looking very healthy.
    Plants will produce flowers in a last ditch effort to spread and multiply before dying completely. So I do believe Hoyas will produce more bloom by being root bound, but they do not LIKE being root boud and could die after too much time.
    Just my opinion and experience from having had hoyas for several years.
    Love the videos! keep

    This is just a comment, more than anything about my own train of thought a few months prior to starting watching your channel, not to anger anyone, but a lot of those plants looked to me at first glance like a random common plant you find on the streets, not something rare or amazing. But the more you talk about them, when you explain the care, their growth, everything, they become beautiful and interesting and I stop thinking they are just "grass". I find it quite amazing how the knowledge can not only change your appreciating for something but you're an actual vision of it like they become something different in your mind. Now, for another comment, is it me or you have a 3 most favourite Hoya list that has actually 15 hoyas or more? hahahahaha : )

    Hi Betsy. Could you maybe show us how your hoya's look, when you decide that they're root bound enough to be repotted? I have a valentine Kerrii and I'm unsure whether to repot it or leave it be for now 😊

    I love your funky Hoya obavada! It's unique! 😂 one of my Kerii leaves looks like that. I do wonder what it is that makes them funky like that.

    I had to put my callis. in water as well. I have the regular and slim leaf versions. The regular one ( like yours ) is the one that refused to grow in the medium. It’s been doing well in water so I’m going to repot it when the riots get really substantial. I’m sure yours can turn around mine only had one leaf left by the time I went to save it. I had the same trouble with Hoya megalaster and it’s doing well now too

    Beautiful collection! Can you talk about saving your hoya compacta? ...what were the symptoms, what did you do to save it... what's the time span to save the plant?

    Betsy, you should check out Uhlig-Kakteen for their hoya selection. They recently added a huge bunch to their site and have some really nice ones left. My order is on it's way, can't wait! Thank you for the great videos, you are just up my alley. 🤗

    Love your collection! I know that with some Hoya (particularly Imperialis), new growth will start to die off if it's pointing down... Not sure if you're still having issues with your Serpens, and I don't have one to speak of (someday!)... but you might try putting your Serpens on a trellis or something where it can grow up. Just a thought! :)

      Hi Betsy I have some really cute Hoya Bella cuttings that I would like to pot up. Do you use your usual Hoya potting mix for your bella and water it more than your other Hoyas?
