Testing the Nest Protect Smoke Alarm with Fire

  • This video is a quick demonstration of how the Nest Protect smoke alarm will work in an actual emergency. Smoke alarms save lives. Whether it's a $5 smoke alarm or a $100 smoke alarm, every home should have some sort of early warning to a fire. Further more, smoke alarms should be placed on every level of the home, inside and outside every bedroom/sleeping area.
    The fire extinguisher I used in the video was once a class ABC extinguisher full of dry power. However, years ago I emptied it. Today, I was able to re-pressurise it with water (and make it a class A fire extinguisher) for this demonstration.
    Safety should be taken VERY seriously. There were numerous precautions applied off camera to enhance the safety and preparedness of this burn. I am not responsible for YOUR actions.

    I like how it gives a warning before sounding the alarm

    for anyone curious, here’s a bit of an explanation of what’s going on:
    • “heads up” mode is a pre-alarm. it means the detector has noticed a small amount of smoke - this is the kind of smoke an ionising detector would not sound at, but an photoelectric detector would. the siren is three dings, followed by “Heads up, there’s smoke in the [alarm name]. The alarm may sound. The alarm will be loud.” it will continue to monitor the rate of smoulder. the light stays orange until the condition clears or advances. the app will receive a heads up notification, but other alarms in the system will not sound at this stage.
    • full alarm: if at any point, the rate of smoulder exceeds a certain speed, or the amount of detected smoke rises above a certain level, the siren will sound. this is why the alarm interrupts itself in this video. the alarm is three high pitched tones (US “Temporal tone”). However, where there would typically be a pause in the Temporal tone, a Nest smoke alarm system with more than one detector unit will announce the following between the temporal tones: “emergency” “there’s smoke” “in the [alarm name]”. the light turns red, the app gets the smoke notification, and other units in the system will go off. this will sustain until the alarm condition is cleared. if the alarm is silenced, it will rearm after 15 minutes (and will not allow you to re-silence it after; it requires the condition to be cleared after that point). you can only silence the alarm from the unit that detected it, or from the app
    • all clear: chime followed by an announcement. this announcement will play across all connected units.
    the same actually applies to the carbon monoxide detection, but honestly i’d treat the Heads Up alarm as a full alarm since the unit is ceiling mounted and resides in dead air (meaning the unit’s detected level is likely to be lower than what you’re sat in - meaning you’re more likely to be in danger than the unit suspects)
    Edit: flipped the names of the sensor types, whoops.

    • @raeyner
      @raeyner Před 4 lety +22

      Absolutely not! A house fire can spread incredibly quickly. In your average fire, you only have, at the very most, 5 minutes to leave the house. An ember from the paper burn, however unlikely, could very well set those cardboard boxes on the shelf ablaze. It only takes around 3 and a half minutes for a garage to become an IDLH environment if any of the modern construction within it catches fire.
