Testing the Nest Protect Smoke Alarm with Fire
Vložit
- čas přidán 1. 04. 2018
- This video is a quick demonstration of how the Nest Protect smoke alarm will work in an actual emergency. Smoke alarms save lives. Whether it's a $5 smoke alarm or a $100 smoke alarm, every home should have some sort of early warning to a fire. Further more, smoke alarms should be placed on every level of the home, inside and outside every bedroom/sleeping area.
The fire extinguisher I used in the video was once a class ABC extinguisher full of dry power. However, years ago I emptied it. Today, I was able to re-pressurise it with water (and make it a class A fire extinguisher) for this demonstration.
Safety should be taken VERY seriously. There were numerous precautions applied off camera to enhance the safety and preparedness of this burn. I am not responsible for YOUR actions.

I like how it gives a warning before sounding the alarm

for anyone curious, here’s a bit of an explanation of what’s going on:
• “heads up” mode is a pre-alarm. it means the detector has noticed a small amount of smoke - this is the kind of smoke an ionising detector would not sound at, but an photoelectric detector would. the siren is three dings, followed by “Heads up, there’s smoke in the [alarm name]. The alarm may sound. The alarm will be loud.” it will continue to monitor the rate of smoulder. the light stays orange until the condition clears or advances. the app will receive a heads up notification, but other alarms in the system will not sound at this stage.
• full alarm: if at any point, the rate of smoulder exceeds a certain speed, or the amount of detected smoke rises above a certain level, the siren will sound. this is why the alarm interrupts itself in this video. the alarm is three high pitched tones (US “Temporal tone”). However, where there would typically be a pause in the Temporal tone, a Nest smoke alarm system with more than one detector unit will announce the following between the temporal tones: “emergency” “there’s smoke” “in the [alarm name]”. the light turns red, the app gets the smoke notification, and other units in the system will go off. this will sustain until the alarm condition is cleared. if the alarm is silenced, it will rearm after 15 minutes (and will not allow you to re-silence it after; it requires the condition to be cleared after that point). you can only silence the alarm from the unit that detected it, or from the app
• all clear: chime followed by an announcement. this announcement will play across all connected units.
the same actually applies to the carbon monoxide detection, but honestly i’d treat the Heads Up alarm as a full alarm since the unit is ceiling mounted and resides in dead air (meaning the unit’s detected level is likely to be lower than what you’re sat in - meaning you’re more likely to be in danger than the unit suspects)
Edit: flipped the names of the sensor types, whoops.
Yeah Carbon Monoxide is something to play with!
As a safety precaution, you cannot silence a CO alarm, it'll silence when the CO levels decrease to safe levels.
Why on earth is your comment so long 0:56

WOW. Cool looking and well equipped fire alarm. It’s also available here in Finland. This is the next buy.
Excellent video. It's simple, practical, and what you need to know about Nest Protect. Congratulations on the video, very good.
I love how it says "the alarm may sound, the alarm is loud".
That's probably very good for some individuals who are on the autism spectrum.

Thanks buddy I want to get one
I had two of these in one of my houses, but it was version one, and according to the owners who bought the house after us, the alarm went off and wouldn't hush. Honestly though nest protect is cool
Let’s say I see a NextDoor fire, how can I activate the alarm without actually doing what you did? Can I link the alarm to an app on my phone?
Was that over reacting? A mask, gloves, 3 extinguisher?
Absolutely not! A house fire can spread incredibly quickly. In your average fire, you only have, at the very most, 5 minutes to leave the house. An ember from the paper burn, however unlikely, could very well set those cardboard boxes on the shelf ablaze. It only takes around 3 and a half minutes for a garage to become an IDLH environment if any of the modern construction within it catches fire.
He practices excellent fire safety in this video. It's never a bad idea to protect yourself, and have a few fire extinguishers handy.
b8e71fcbe2e195c67d8d16734013d20f Yes... Because campfires are lit indoors
@@raeyner he had water all over though..
@@alexandersalarms5380 It's better safe than sorry. The fire can spread to other class materials. Water won't put out certain types of fire, no harm in exercising caution when it's practical to do so.
@@Engineer9736 Thank you! As a protective services professional, I appreciate your feedback. I'll reflect on it during my next bonfire. Be sure to practice plenty of care during the pandemic!
Plot twist, that was gasoline not water.
But great video! I will have to get nest products forsure!.

I need this, I am afraid of having fire while I am at work. Do you call the fire department as soon as you get an alert and you aren't home?
helenevienna you just tell them that your not home
Maybe you ought to get security cameras too which you can remote into and check (see if it's smokey).

Cool smoke detector.
Why did it say entryway when the phone notification said garage? 'The smoke alarm is over' what?!
Echo the Husky because he programmed it on the phone to say garage.
Ouch. There goes my ears. But anyway, cool vid bro.
0:52 "Heads up! There's Smoke, In The Entryway. The Alar"-BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Cool! I wonder if it's possible to hook it to a real fire alarm panel :D
Thanks! Unfortunately Nest does not provide the right hardware to do that.
@@SERSafety You can't because it's intended for home use.
However it does have many of the features found in a commercial smoke detector. However it does not have many because you have a older version, the newer version has more.
I’ll be prepared if it makes the fire department well now
I would love that to be my school fire alarm lol
The thing is, that it doesn't have a call point, which is why it is used in houses more than schools or businesses.
Piezoelectric horns sound like that.
I've had mine and it sounds fairly quickly. Within 1 minute if smoke sometimes
A minute to activate? That doesn’t take as long for the newer version!
What do you thnknof other similar options like the xiaomi smart smoke detector system? Relies only on batteries...and each unit is under 30$.
Worth it?
Yes, I have the newer one and it took far less to activate
Ding ding ding hands up Dear smoke in the entryway the alarm Beep Beep Beep
not bad for the 1st generation of the nest protect

Heads up there is smoke the alarm 🚨 smo- BEEP BEEP
The smoke alarm is over
What type of alarm is this? Photoelectric or ionization or a smoke alarm without a type and its own sensor?
It's a modified photoelectric; they added a blue LED to the Infrared LED, and they say the blue one detects the larger particles generated from a fast-burning fire, whereas the IR one detects the small particles from a smoldering fire.
Plus they say they've solved the problem of false alarms from cooking or showering by adding a steam detector.
Wow!!
at first i thought, this mans crazy, just flooding his garage with petrol, but it just was water

SECOND COMMENT
What if it said This alarm can’t be hushed
I l9ve you bro
Time to replace your Nest Protect original to a Nest Protect second generation smoke and carbon monoxide alarm that has split spectrum sensors, sound check, and you can silence the alarm with your smart phone.
what do you do when you get an alert and aren't home? do you call the fire department instantly? It's doesn't give false negatives does it?
How slow is this compared to your other smoke alarms
For me, it was faster than the rest of my alarms
