- With the creation of the World Wide Web in the 1990's many companies vied for the position of most used web browser, even to the point of some rather questionable business practices.

The invention of the web browser is truly a amazing christmas gift.
Hearing about how many modern browsers derived themselves from Mosaic (the first popular browser) reminds me of Greek mythology. It's sort of like Cronus was overthrown by his own child Zeus, and now nobody prays to Cronus anymore. Add in petty fighting with statues at headquarters and it's basically a re-enactment
Cary considering your experience from coding and computers you should make your own Browser.

Hi
@carykh can you ask Adam Kats when the 2nd part of the latest episode of inanimate insanity invitational is coming out?
Early internet history is my jam. So glad you're making these. If you haven't already check out the Internet History Podcast. It goes right back from the very birth of the modern internet. Think you'd like it.
Randomly discovered you somehow the other day, now I'm subscribed. Very good videos, keep up the good work! :D
Same happened here 😄
I was an internet developer when IE came out. I remember seeing the shift from Netscape to IE in the monthly WebTrends reports. I solidly believe that if Gore won the 2000 election and the new Attorney General didn't have the suit against MS tossed, the company would have been split.
Currently watching this on Mozilla Firefox
No you are watching this on CZcams dumass.
the pun police dumbass*
Watching in my Netscape Navigator
@Jie Andaya ok fine. Truth is watching it using Lynx browser.
I'm wondering how many see my previous post and are thinking "What the hell is Lynx browser?".
Netscape was my first introduction to the internet i loved it ..
I am currently watching this in The CZcams App.
This video should be called:
“The history of the internet..
..and oh yeah Microsoft”
I installed Netscape, earlier this week..... It's not what I would call compatible with today's HTML 5 and stuff.
Mosaic also supported Unix systems that use the X Window System.
An ad for a Softonic Firefox installer showed up on this video
Yikes! Softonic = PUP en masse
Best youtuber ever mate, love these vids.
Mosaic didn't just work on windows and mac; but on unix and amiga as well.... It even says so in the image: X Window System, Microsoft Windows, Macintosh
Haha, notice how the Internet Explorer 3 icon at 3:27 looks almost like Edge :D
when the title said battle of the browsers i thought it was gonna be an animation or comic fight but no ;c
i hate how quality content channels like this have less than 20k and people who carry around a camera and film themselves doing everyday things and produce boring ass videos everyday have millions of subs
It's all about what people are interested in. Smart people like stuff like this. Majority like the other.
guys is netscape still around?
No, most of Netscape's devs have went on to create Mozilla Firefox
Seamonkey would be the closest equivalent to the Netscape Suite.
Yes, I believe the software is still available for download.
no but firefox sure is
When I was a kid, I really loved Netscape and was really sorry to see it go,
Software $$ vs. Freeware. On a quick review of the comments I don't think anyone has mentioned this. Netscape was 'shareware' but to unlock their best, most powerful features you paid for the Software $$. When IE from Microsoft came out, it was FREE and almost or close to as powerful ! IE came with windows (which you paid for or was included when you bought a PC). Side note, Windows 8 and 10 ... remember Windows 7 and before, when you PAID for the software or Upgrade :-p
I thought this said "battle of the bowsers"
Finally! A video with a good audio
I remember when Mosaic came out. Thought it was coolest thing ever..
Chrome is still my favorite, though Firefox Quantum is a close second for me, I use it for certain websites that don't work as well in Chrome.
This is really very GREAT/AWESOME very much indeed FOLKS NO LIES AT ALL
How does such a great video only have 200,000 views
That's the song from the stage construction of pipe dream in Animusic!
I never knew that was the origin of mozillas name, HOW CLEVER!
Makes me wonder if some of those Pre-Internet Explorer and Pre-Netscape web browsers are still being updated to this day.
They fought the google and the [Pause] google won.
"You fought the law and the [Pause] Law won"

templeOS is the fucking best OS ever because it doesn't have internet compatibility.
You just sent me down a spiral of Internet-Insanity. God damn!

Terry A Davis has been blessed with divine intellect noob. He's a genius.
i was a long time user of netscape navigated since its beginning all the way to its end
even back then we all new NOT to use IE
I am a bit confused, how can one use the internet without a browser? How did it work back in the 60's?
You didn't talk about user-agents :(
I haven't heard some of these names in ages.
Currently watching this on Microsoft edge
I use Edge to download Chrome and Firefox.
@@kennywhiddon1497 you said the litteral same thing about IE
Microsoft also tilted the playing field by having IE use undocumented system calls not known to the general development community to improve its performance.
MSFT should have been broken up.
MS were really, really bad but Google is worse.
This is a great starter for the story. I'm eager to see the second one!
Microsoft: We do a little trolling.
Been using Firefox. Never looked back. :)
I do occasionally use Chrome when accessing my seconday e-mail and uploading/downloading stuff from my MEGA storage.
I used Netscape to the end of development. It seemed to be a little faster than explorer
Do part 3 plz

I'm using youtube on the app the android one
lol i used to use netscape
Am I the only one who really liked IE ? ( I switched from Firefox to IE early 2012 to not use the same browser as my dad)
Got it wrong but Walla would have been a better fit.
Netscape won the browser war. Too bad they didn't live to enjoy the victory.
(Remember: the browser war wasn't Netscape vs. Microsoft ... the war was over whether all applications would move to the Web or remain forever tethered to Windows desktops.)
what about safari?
Website and the website is not working for me at all and I am not
Part of IE taking hold from Netscape also had to do with how $#%^%$^#%$ Netscape 4 was to develop websites for. Literally 95% of development time was done towards making the web browser not fudge up between different PATCH levels of NS4.
I mean... yeah, web development today can get to be annoying with browser compatibility... but compared to the days of people still using NS4.. it is a fucking sweet ass heaven of delight.
Fuck... I'm trying to forget the annoyance that developing for Netscape 4 was... uuuuggg!
NO!!!! WHY DID YOU HAVE TO DIE NETSCAPE...WHY!!!!!!!!!
Battle of the browsers goes to Firefox hands down.
Cool story, Why not do a story about the real history of online video?
Chrome is best. I killed Cortana because it refused to use Google.
Lisa Adler Chrome is trash.
Google tracks your searches and sells it to advertisers, so I use DuckDuckGo.
YOU FORGOT ABOUT CELLO

You spelled Marc AndreessEn wrong, denying his Danish roots.
You say 'decimated'. That does _not_ mean 'reduced to a tenth of its size'. It referred to killing every tenth man of a Roman army regiment if it had behaved cowardly. It can also mean 'despirited', 'defanged', basically have an important part taken away. But not 90%.
The only browser anyone should use is Lynx
Cliffhanger suspence. Who could it be? LOL
This video is just aggravating on how ill-informed it is. Not a single mention of text browsers like Lynx. It sounds like some guy reading a Wikipedia article.
Netscape wanted money for me to continue to use it's browser. I was poor back then and quickly looked for a browser to use instead. With the aid of USENET I found MOSAIC and started using that. Then for some reason I finally saw an ICON on my screen called Internet Explorer so I started to use that, and it's upgrades were free. It was a part of Win95.
Microsoft edge fan
HOOMAN
I hate Microsoft for killing Netscape. It was such a great browser.
my dad still has a netscape email address, technically its an AOL address but i still has "@netscape.net"
How did they install Netscape without a browser...
AI Dusty that was a time when you bought CD /floppy to install software

I love the Netscape to Internet Explorer to Chrome because it shows you don't always need the government to step in to stop monopolies. Given incentive, people will do that anyway.

Microsoft always screw things up...
This, like so many explanations of the browser wars, misses much of the point. What did Microsoft gain by giving away a free product? Where did Microsoft get its money from?
The answer is that the browser war actually had little to do with the browsers themselves. The real money was in commercial servers. This was the time that every company felt that it suddenly needed a web presence and they wanted products with support contracts.
Netscape had a leading advantage in that market by adding extra functionality developers could use between Netscape Web servers and Netscape browsers, where they had marketshare. Microsoft really wanted into what was developing into a lucrative market. Microsoft's advantage would be bundling into its dominant OS and they created features that only worked between IIS and Internet Explorer. When IE became the dominate browser, IIS overcame Netscape's dominance in the server market and MS became a semi-viable server producer alongside a market that had been almost completely *nix dominated.
That is how Microsoft monetized from offering a free browser. That is what the browser wars were really about. It was all about selling web servers.

I still hate IE.
