Anthony is a Japanese comedian who has been featured on many TV shows such as Wednesdays with Downtown (水曜日のダウンタウン), and a well-known television celebrity within Japan. He is part of the comedy duo known as Matenrou. He was born to an African-American father and Japanese mother in a suburb of Tokyo, but his father passed away when he was 2 years old. At age 5, his mother re-married to a Japanese man who raised him as his own, along with Anthony's mother. Listen to his story on how he navigated life as the only black person in his area, with full Japanese parents, and only knowing how to speak Japanese. As Anthony made his way into comedy and the television industry, many other mixed Japanese people continue to support him and he is part of a unique community of other mixed Japanese celebrities who appear on TV.

私も日本生まれ日本育ちの混血です、産まれてすぐに両親が離婚してしまい、日本人の母の元で母子家庭で育ちました。
心はごく普通の日本人なのに外見だけが日本人じゃない事と、英語を全く話せないのに英語を話す事を期待される事が嫌でしたね～(そのせいか外国の方をみると避けてしまいます)
でも自衛隊に入隊してから、自分は日本人として国防に携わったんだと思えるようなってアイデンティティで悩む事は無くなりました。
今ではその辺の人より自分はずっと日本人だと思って生きてますよ

友達に黒人のハーフいるけど、米軍基地で親が働いてるって言ってて、親父が黒人って言ってたから、父ちゃんが軍属かなって思ってたら、日本人の母ちゃんの方が米軍基地で働いてて逆だろって思って爆笑したことはある。親父はジムのインストラクターだった。

そういうことを伝えるためにあえて分かりやすくアイデンティティーや人種に関する質問をぶつけてるんです。本人はアメリカ育ちのハーフだけど、そういうものを意識する必要がなかったと語ってます

って心配すること自体がその人が差別されることが前提とされている、つまり質問者自身が差別していると感じるのは仕方ないかなと思っちゃうな。まぁ、感じ方は人それぞれってね。
Anthony is delightful! So glad that he didn’t let his difference separate him from his motherland Japan and that he uses his difference to his advantage and also that younger Japanese accept him more now. I’m sure his American father would be pleased that his sons were looked after by good and brave Japanese step-father.

このインタビューを見てわかったのは、身体的能力は人種の違いで生まれつき大きく左右されるけど、性格については人種や遺伝関係なく、周囲の環境で決まるということですね。
いや性格は半分以上生物学的な遺伝で決まるというのはもう科学的にデータが出ていて証明されてますよ。運動神経が親の身体能力に強く影響されるように、知的好奇心、忍耐力、論理的判断力、抽象的思考能力、反社会的行動のとりやすさなども先天的要素、つまり遺伝がかなり関与していることがわかっています。
リベラリズムを重んじる現代の学術界では、血統配合による人間の知能差などにふれるのはタブーですけどね。人種差別や社会階層差別に即直結する問題なので。

I couldn't stop laughing. I ended up pausing the video to read all the subtitles. Oh my gosh. Anthony is amazing. I love the part about where he walks into the English language class and everyone stands up when he walks into the room, thinking he's the teacher. Lol :-) Being a Hatian/Latino living in America, I don't feel like "America is my motherland" either.
So, I completely understand where he's coming from. Since I'm currently dealing with identity issues, about not fitting into the dominant American culture. This was very inspirational :-}

"Mixed" is the key word here. I've been living in Japan long enough to know that Japanese people do not like to mix. Foreigners whom have permanent residence or citizenship after living here for a great many years will never feel integrated in this country because the Japanese government has it that way and having children in this country who are mixed with Japanese also feel that horrible energy that they're never good enough to be apart. Japan is so scared like cowards to lose their culture and so they don't want to integrate people into this country who doesn't fit the image (100% asain) that they set on television.

It’s really cool to watch your interviews in both english and japanese. Those are my 2nd and 3rd languages and it feels like a special kind of channel I can enjoy just by listening to practice. Adding the good quality of the interviews and the nice people in them like Anthony makes it even better.
I always wondered why Anthony didn’t speak english when seeing him on tv, now I know that and how nice he is outside 芸人world.😊
