Saw him play as a lad for England schoolboys and again on his full England debut against Scotland.lplus a couple for Man united. Always strong, but, fair play. Opposite goal always a target,no messing about, not afraid to take opposition on. Duncan was admired by fans everywhere. Probably, in my opinion the most I have ever known. Duncan was exactly 6 months older than me.Him October 1st me April I st. Was due to play against him 1951 in school cup match at Dudley ,my school was from Wednesbury. As we gathered at ground to play. I was told Edwards ay playing today mate, good job for yow ( you ) cuz yow would think yow wuz playing against a Mon (man ). Never ever will I forget that daw , incidentally we lost 0 5
.To me Duncan's firm, forward style of play is still with me. I think today's game I think, stop messing about and get going forward. Sometimes the goalkeeper sees more balls from his own players, than the opposition.

If there's one positive to have after his untimely death, it's that he's still remembered to this very day. There's a very small handful of players from that era who get talked about today, and Edwards is still one of them.

The images of the game against Real Madrid are unique. Between 0:52” and 0:59” you can see Di Stefano pissed off with Edwards. Even the great star of that era gives a kick with his foot to the youngster

  • @bunchlead

It’s said, Edwards was the complete footballer. He could dribble, tackle, shoot on either foot, header, score and play in any position. I think from the footage, we can see, why he was so special.

My Dad talked about George Best and my grandad talked about Duncan Edwards. Because so little of their game time was captured on camera they’re both mythical creatures of United. Best obviously has more tape but still it only represents a fraction of what he accomplished on the pitch. I’m reading a book about big Duncan at the minute and I’m amazed at how little I actually knew about someone that I’d heard so much about.

That is the one. I'm about 3/4's through and I am thoroughly enjoying it. I do wish there was more footage but I also quite like that there isn't because there is a an aura with Duncan and for different reasons Best (I am from Belfast so Besty means something else to us here)...anyway thanks for the video mate, it is nice to see some of what I am reading. I don't think the videos do him justice especially based on what I read and have heard from my Grandad but I really love seeing his body language & stature because it helps to paint the picture a bit more. There is a level of composure that you only typically see with the greats, like they see the game in slow motion. @@martinh1309

I tell you that in Spain a lot of people like your grandpa remembered very well that team, especially Charlton, Edwards and Taylor. It was a well respected and beautiful team of youngsters and many people were very sad after Munich accident. And in the 60’s, when Charlton was at his prime, the fans in Spain used to compare him with Di Stefano because of their similar way to play football

@@carlossimancas9867 thanks for sharing. I know the great United side of the 50s had a few bouts with Spanish teams like, Real Madrid in 57, and Bilbao the same year.
Real and United would have been the main two teams fighting for the European Cup between 58 and 68 if it hadnt been for the disaster.
And you're right, Charlton and Di Stefano were very similar, even in appearance. Both great players.

Great vid thanks for compiling this, can appreciate Duncan Edwards reading of the game, timing, strength and distribution. In defense he generally stays on his feet and blocks and doesnt go in for slides or recovery tackles...all due to his excellent reading of the game ability. Its interesting watching some of his advancing forward play from defence...its not dissimilar really to Dutch defending in total football era of 74-78. He looked like a modern footballer ahead of the times

Bobby Moore would probably tell you that aswell.
But in reality, i believe Moore would have played anyway as Edwards played most games at left half, not centre back.
Jack Charlton and/or Nobby Stiles/Alan Ball would be at a higher risk of never playing for England though.

Looks composed, confident, strong, skilful and appears to read the game way beyond his years. In those days teenagers rarely got first team football, he made his first division debut aged 16! I can't think of any 17/18 year olds these days that would slot into top flight and international football in that position and look so comfortable.

One could argue he was better, simply given the era of football during that time. Pitches were awful, balls were hard, kits were heavy, boots weren't good, and Edwards still looked world class. Mbappe is a real talent too, no doubt he'll be one of the greatest of all time if he keeps it up.

With Duncan Edwards the real tragedy is what could have been for both Man U and England. Nearest we have had so far is probably Steven Gerrard although not sure he was as good at winning back the ball as Big Dunc from this footage. The other one is Jude Bellingham right now for those wishing to explain to their children/grandchildren.
