Addendum: • Overused sound effects...
when you recognize the sound effect and you hear it over and over again and it feels extremely awkward
It's not really awkward, it's just really fascinating, it always makes me wonder how would sound designers get these sound effects and I want to own them so bad.
@@HajimeKomaeda Most of these are from the many libraries put out by Sound Ideas. The General 6000 library has been used in like every movie, show, and game that's ever existed lol
@@HajimeKomaeda Theres a widely used sound effect a friend of mine made, its an electronic whine that was recorded by having someone hold an electric drill and pulling the trigger while holding the chuck so it rotates slowly and lets out a overloaded whine. Some people get very obsessed with sound effects too there was a podcast where audio engineers were talking about the specific sound effect and how it 'was probably made' with purely software. it was rather funny to hear people discussing all the methods when the mudane nature of it was so apparent.
I feel like I've seen you everywhere
Its like a switch that instantely breaks your immersion lol
9:24 That stupid pottery breaking sound drives me absolutely insane because it's in EVERYTHING
Isnt it in some Valve Source games?
Its also in Sonic Unleashed.
it's in zelda
I didn't even listen to it yet, yet i still knew exactly what you were talking about
_Redlettermedia_ like to spoof that, may I quote: " ...because it's in EVERYTHING"
To make it easier to navigate.

Endless thanks.
This is helpful thanks
You know this is in the description you didn’t have to go through all this work or copy and paste it.
15:29 man who would've thought that the headcrab screech was a sped up Howie scream.
Whoever came up with it during the meeting probably got a promotion
Dang
😮
WAIT WHAT
I never noticed lmao
This video is God’s work. I’ve been looking for something like this for YEARS.
Props and respect.
No kidding, especially citing all the sources for scenes and songs.
Those sounds comes from Sound Ideas general 6000
PT Alecz I wouldn't say God's work, more like mans work or lack of work since tbey reuse the same old sound bites for everything because they are stupid lazy and want to make money without putting much effort into it.
everyone gets their sounds from rts games i guess
RTS games just use a ton of stock sounds. The Civilization games used them a lot as well (e.g. the battleship sound is in the video) - Civ II and Alpha Centauri also used a ton of stock footage for the wonder cinematics, as well as stock sound effects. I miss the old style with all the crazy creative ways Microprose/Firaxis and Westwood created the ambience of their games by bodging together random stuff.
@@nathangamble125 Westwood had some great choices for death screams, although I can't find a video of just the ones from Tib Sun...
Warcraft 3 had sooo many sounds you can also hear from other sources youd think it was the original
Nathan Gamble Sid Meier 🐐🐐🐐
maybe the directors are gamers
I used to play a lot of Doom and Age of Empires when I was little, and I was always like "hold on, I've heard this before", but I was never quite sure. I watched a few movies over the following years and keeped hearing the same sounds.
This video is all I wanted.
hearing the Doom door sound always takes me out of a movie xD
Ya I have to say I feel the same for sure on this. That howie scream I always would think of StarCraft.
Sounds like Crazy Diamond from Jjba
Yeah, Jesus, people ripped DooM effects alot
@Pizel Logic And nobody even cares lmao.
Ah, the doom sounds
Minux same I love hearing them
the best stock sound
I can stop hearing them.
Lolz always wondered if people were paying tribute to Doom somehow.
When the doom door sound came into the Doom 4 door
Damn the wooden door sound at 50:00 makes me nostalgic from all of the source games
I can't believe I didn't notice that it was the same sound effect
I'm pretty sure that sound originally comes from the 1991 game "Myst".
It's used SO much in film & TV that I swear you could make an hour long video of that sound effect alone.
20:08 Dogs making the Wilhelm Scream. lol.
Lol
These sound effects made the dog different
they had the voice changer thing tho
I forgot how to breathe help
The only thing I can say about it is
Aaaaaaaaough!
Whenever I hear Howie scream I burst laughing, it’s one of the funniest scream sound effects I’ve ever heard
I recognize it as the scream in the Ahh! Real Monsters intro
That police woman on radio really takes the prize holy shit
LOL exactly. Did it originate with SimCity 3000? That's where I first heard it.
The Doom Door sound effect is also used in the force awakens when rey gets off her speeder to get a quarter portion for unkar plutt.
Last week they were a half a portion each
and its also used in black mesa for the tau cannon
The door hinge sound at 38:34 brought me here. The scene is from 24, s03e18 (6am -7am) at about 31m19s into the episode. I have been planning on making a compilation video of the door hinge sound, because it has been bothering me for YEARS. So thank you I guess.
I just heard it in evangelion and im really bothered because I recognized it inmediately
I recognise it from the SpongeBob video games
Deus Ex
It was in diary of a wimpy kid dog days
It’s in The Grand Budapest Hotel at about 50:05. I’ve been hearing it everywhere FOR YEARS
40:31 *Oh yeah, that damn police radio voice* from Sim City 3000! Heard it many times elsewhere! What is the voice saying? "Made accept from McQueen, not tonight telling the nazi"??
Finally a compilation of that darn police radio girl. I've noticed that damn lady all my life saying the same thing in about a 1000 different show and films lol
SmokingSpoon But we gotta respect that damn lady for using her whole life for that shit
Me too! First in SimCity 3000
And let's not forget this other ubiquitous police radio sound effect
czcams.com/video/afnR1C7HTh8/video.html
I feel so relieved that other people notice those things too hahah... Seems most people will think you're a weirdo for noticing those overused sfx xD
14148 avenue
Damn you put a lot of effort into this!
Was looking for the 30:52 "Kawoosh" sound. I remember it was in Starfox Adventures as the fireball from his staff. I've heard it in so many things and thought after all these years I'd look it up. Thanks for making this, brings back good memories. 😁
so do you have the exact title for this?
@@real.silencewench No clue, just wanted to hear the sound again.
@@real.silencewench It's from Sound Ideas' General Series 6000, and the sound effect is called "Fire, Ball - Impact and Large Fire Burst, Rumble". It's in track 28 of CD 6015.
@@panzermann1181 u da 1
Just heard the Doom door sound in JoJo Part 4
DORA? more like DOORA!
stfu
I specifically came to this video because the Icon of Sin sound was in part 1

@@Beansman-gp3ws which episode?
The chronosphere sound is also used in TF2, when a sentry is destroyed.
Yes, I've included it in my new video, check it out!
SENTRY DOWN!
yeah I've been wondering about it. it is used in many things like final fantasy dissidia (Cloud omnislash attack), chainsaw man episode 4 (when aki summons kon), metal gear solid 1 (when liquid enters metal gear), dawn of war 1 (orbital bombardment), katekyo hitman reborn (explosions), bleach movie (explosion), oddworld abe's exoddus (good ending teleport) but the one most distinct is in "Eternal Darkness - Chattur'gha's Maw Cutscene" (I'm sure i'm missing some :p )
the police radio is even at 36:15 in the platform moves section, you truly can't escape it
The Monster sound is also known as the "King Kong Roar" to certain people, such as me, because that sound effect was featured in King Kong 1976.
I've included it in the new video.
Man, doom is still present to this day.
Love that.
27:31 A classic.
30:52 As I'm sure you guys know, the sound was also used in Star Fox Adventures (the Fire Blaster) as well as Pokemon Snap (Porygon flies out of a wall), Wind Waker (Gohma charging up her flames and Gohdan charging up his fireball attack), and Phantom Hourglass (Eox sending out a shockwave as he slams his fists into the ground).
I was hoping to see this comment, i knew it was a StarFox game and kept thinking Assault but knew better it wasnt.
58:32:
"Clips taken out of context"
Well, if you watch the movie (Immortal Ad Vitam) some time, it won't be any much different :D
What the fuck
every clip is out of context
Holy sh.. Poison crabs from Half-Life 2 having a high pitched Howie Scream blows my mind!
That was pretty clever
For JoJo fans out there, I think they also used the "Doom Doors" sound effect at 44:51 whenever Crazy Diamond appears
Now that you mention it, they're incredibly similar
@@nicolassantacruz1453 It's just Crazy Diamond ready to rip and tear
and repair
Now i want a josuke mod on doom eternal
13:17 I think you came for it here
09:24 As a Zelda fan, I approve of this sound effect (when a certain character is involved).
I can see what you mean lmao
0:00 Thundaga from Lightning Returns
22:10 Anima from FFX
30:52 Nukes from the end of the 2007 StarCraft 2 Protoss Gameplay video
36:48 Hydra from God of War (and Snipe from StarCraft 2 at 37:54 and 55:13)
52:05 Reaver death from StarCraft
1:02:01 Right before THAT'S THAT CREEPY BOWSER'S LAUGH from Hotel Mario
When you notice tha 30% of the effects are from C&C games:
C&C Community: Yo what
It's the other way around, brother
Bro got so mad he made a hour long youtube video all about them. I respect that
12:27 this is what I came for
Do you know what movie that is?
Jay it’s the movie “the ninth configuration”
@@lakermitdafrog6094 Thanks
(13:16 for the actual sound effect)
_AAAHH!!! Real Monsters_ :)
X-files also had that metal door sound about a hundred times too lol
You KNOW it's bad when you start hearing other overly-used sound clips in the background of the examples used for the highlighted one.
metal door is my personal most hated one you could string togehter a whole movie of shots using it.. and the all the computer/electricity sound effects are so overused
Yeah. Creaky door is in every fucking film! Immediately takes me out of the movie through such an obvious SFX.
bastardtubeuser I know right and it sometimes doesn't even make sense
SpongeBobs house doors
Personally, I'm gonna go with the police phone operator. Amazingly annoying lol
What about the metal door shutting sound effect or the jail door sliding shut sound effect
Some tidbits:
• I'm pretty sure most already knew of this, but most of the sounds heard are from the General 6000 series and other libaries from Sound Ideas. I knew that because I used plenty of their sounds when I was doing sound modding work for Team Fortress 2.
• The Charge for Feather River has the Wilhelm scream. From what I heard, this movie is _actually_ where the sound originated from. It's when the character Wilhelm gets shot in the film, hence the name.
• For the BFG9000 part, I saw a mistake in the captions. The C&C part was supposed to be labeled just "Command & Conquer", not the Red Alert one. Hell, you got even the year wrong too.
I know this is a super old comment but the wilhelm scream is actually even older than the movie with the character for which it is named believe it or not
@@Goodboy77717 Can you list examples?
This IS the greatest video on youtube.
"Surely the LXG movie wasn't as bad as people make out?"
"They legit used those stock screams from the 90's"
The police Radio one is really prevalent, there is hardly any other sound effect ever used in the sane context.
One thing you missed is that the “X-Blast” Sound effect is also the default Half-Life 1 explosion sfx.
Great video! I always had moments where I would be playing a game or watching a movie etc and I would hear a certain sound effect which made me think, “I heard that EXACT same sound from Doom”, or something like that.
Great compilation! I recognise most of these being reused in a whole bunch of other films, tv shows and games!
The "Howie Scream" is such an unnatural sounding scream to be used in any serious capacity. And yet, they keep using it!
It was in Silent Hill Downpour, which should tell you something about that game's quality and Dev cycle
I love this video, so much time and effort. That was fun to watch ! Your commentary about the reindeer cracked my up. x) Great job man. o/
"No, they aren't. They are imps from Doom" (28:54)
this is exactly the kinda random crap you watch around 3am during your second wave
I recently discovered that we still have those CDs from Sound Ideas lying around in our archive. So many in fact they occupy multiple storage cabinets.
Of course these days everything is on HDD...and sometimes those samples find their way into modern productions.
57:13 - Age of Mythology makes that sound when a hero is resurrected
It's also the sound when you select a god in the pregame menu.
Hearing the Doom door sound in Teen Titans go is really wierd-feeling.
Doom Titans Go
Some random loser on the internet or spongebob
In an episode there is also a howie scream
They also used for a shrink ray in one of the episodes. I remember overhearing it.
The fact that a lot of stock sound effects used in movies comes from a single videogame made in the 90's is kind of bizarre.
Actually, they came from sound libraries by Sound Ideas, mostly the General 6000 Series.
36:48 Universal Studios Sound Effects Library Monster Roar. King Kong from the 1976 remake has those roars. HyruleGoji98 will love it.
I've heard that Babadook scream in many more games and movies. It always pulls me out of it because of how distinct it is.
At first, when he listed “The Babadook,” I thought he meant the sound of the Babadook saying its actual name. But he was referring to that OTHER noise it makes. I believe that roar/snarl is performed by Frank Welker.
1:00:00 This blue jay sound give me a feeling of 3D rendering of forests in the early 90's. realistic textures and pixelated textures, plastic glitter textures, slightly blurry screen, realistic models and animated models and sudden movements with motion blur
I remember the Howie Scream so well from Last Action Hero. I was in elementary school and went around doing the scream on the playground.
I hope we can find an honour the voice actors and foley artists who made all these wonderful stock sounds. Memes and media would not be what they are today without them
You could make a series of these, one hour long episodes, just for the Wilhelm scream 😂
Metal doors and Police radio have tortured me for many years! I'm so glad to them both here!
14:59 I never caught that one before now
The Quake Dog sfx was also from Shadow Dancer on SEGA arcades!
Poison Headcrab used Howie Scream just sped up? Wow.
Also that one cat noise whenever someone throws something when they're not looking
I realized it's here around 9:48
The almost melodic electric noise at 1:22 can also be heard in Ultima 8, at the entrance to Mythran's house with the electric traps.
2:52, holy shit this is the sound that plays when destroying a sentry in TF2.
This is going to fuck with me in future viewings of movies.
Thank you for this gift
Thank you Anna for putting together all these sounds we used to hear all of our life!
Great work with the CCs showing the titles, fucking superb!
ahhh! "metal door opens", we meet again!
great video
One reused sound effect I’ve noticed is the high-pitched Pig Squeal.
In Banjo-Tooie, in Jolly Rodger’s Lagoon, the mutated pig NCPs will make that sound when you stand near them for long enough. In Sonic 2006 and Sonic Generations, the Iblis Takers (the lava bird/ bat-looking creatures) make the same sound when defeated.
Love how all of these clips are out of context
The Kawoosh and Chronosphere sounds were even used in Hyperdimension Neptunia: The Animation, which they're used in episode 5.
how about that one gun reloading sound
@Adam Demeter i was thinking more like the generic pump action shotgun sound effect
You mean the cs 1.6 3rd person generic reload sound?
Haha those c&c screams
Yeah 😂
The opening metal door sound is so ridiculous. It's one of the few here that I have been aware of for YEARS. I can't believe it's still used. Everytime I hear it I feel like it was snuck in as a joke.
Yeah, everything comes from or reminds me of Command & conquer; it's great!
The Eagle sound was also the Gryphon in Warcraft
I’m just waiting for the hl2 fast zombie scream
@Adam Demeter what timestamp?
Howie Scream but high pitched and sped up
15:10
I love how Doom was included as one of the uses of the Doom door sound
Any time I hear Doom doors, it pulls me right out of whatever I'm watching.
I have been waiting my whole life to watch a video like this, thank you
That mountain lion sound effect is so common that I thought it was just an instinctual sound every one of them made.
i absolutely LOVE "kawoosh". i can't imagine a firey explosion without it
Doom used so many of these sound effects it’s honestly amazing. These stock sound effects sound better on old games due to hardware limitations. They feel more distinct sometimes. Great video nonetheless!
lmao many of these sounds originated from video games amazing
The pistol holster sound is used in Red Dead Redemption. Along with the clicking/cocking sound that comes after.
The inclusion of a clip from Young Indiana Jones was a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one.
My favorite sound I can hear anywhere is "Worms Sheep" sound (not on this list). It's literally on EVERY scene of EVERY movie with sheeps.
Babadook was so depressing, till I heard the Warcraft 2 sound effect. Then it was just ridiculous.
Wilhelm scream is one of my personal favorites. It’s so funny and stupidly overused XD
There's another police radio sound effect I've also heard everywhere. It's like a woman's voice, super compressed, going "Mah Mah-Mah-Mah, code 6." I've never known what the first four syllables say.
The doom doors was also used in Timesplitters Future Perfect, when you kill the rolling robot enemies they make that sound
"Small Heavy Metal Door Opens with Loud Squeak" (37:58) is the one that does it for me
I think I hear something from goldeneye every time I watch anything lol
Rest in peace Westwood and EA Los Angeles.
Kawoosh sound also used in the movie "The Truman show"
damn so much work put into this video! awesome!
One of those camel sounds were in Banjo-Kazooie for both Conga and Gobi
*Includes Wilhelm Scream*
*Video ends up being longer than an hour*
I hate it so fucking much
Pretty sure there's more clips of the cop radio sound
These sounds are weirdly nostalgic to me and they make me enjoy whatever game/movie so much more than if they were done inhouse or with some soulless foley artist
Man the tesla coil sound effect I will always remember from the TMNT game for the original Xbox and those electric boxes.
Cool video. Kawoosh sound was also used in Swarm Assault game.
