  • New York filmmaker John Wilson, host of HBO's critically-acclaimed series, "How To with John Wilson," talks with "Sunday Morning" contributor Kelefa Sanneh about creating his pseudo instructional videos that, he says, are like nature documentaries about contemporary life, capturing New Yorkers at their most unguarded.
    "CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

    His show makes me feel less alone. The editing and juxtaposition of what he's saying with the imagery is incredibly entertaining and it makes me realize that there really are stories everywhere. I really admire John Wilson.

    "How to with John Wilson" is a very special kind of documentary. I really love the way that voiceover and pictures are in ironic sync, working as a long joke. At the beginning the series looks like it is made like a simple homework, but anyone who tried to make and edit video will know how much work went into this. And it is a very fresh format too, which is something in 2021. Anti-selfie documentary but not about nature, some kind of a tutorial but not really a tutorial, sometimes it's a philosophical film. Good stuff :)

    I love How to With John Wilson but the format and narrative that CBS is limited to really distinctly clashes in this feature with the reason why How to With John Wilson is so effective. Most television drapes reality with fantasy, whereas John Wilson reveals the fantasy of reality.

    I only meow am catching on and all I can say is the fact there are only three seasons & its because John chose to end it is just such a loud through a mega phone sound of what this guys hidden talents really are. He doesnt just look at humanity through a lens, its like he is the lens as the narrator describing every stain & scratch that obscures our vision or paints reality a little more off putting than perhaps what it really is. This is truly one of the most ultimate modern social experiments but the best part is we dont have to listen to endless interviews of people, and even though I wasnt in love with Johns voice initially its grown to be like a beautiful swan song I hear every time I see a new episode because of the needle point accurate raw insights he brings thru truly odd upside down screwball analogies or metaphors that fill in the lines & shapes with vibrant colors of what a often monotonous & also exciting hamster wheel that NYC/life can become for anyone one person.

    I've been to Citrovia and that seems odd he wouldn't have been able to film since it's a public "attraction" meant to counter the construction and provide (yet another) Instagrammable place. So me taking photos with an iPhone is okay... maybe even a DSLR camera... but once the camera gets larger (not even a large TV or traditional film camera) it's not? What if media was trying to cover the "exhibit"? Is it that he didn't have proper credentials? I know that's not the point of the story so don't come at me, lol, but just curious.

    • @KenRuan
      @KenRuan Před 2 lety +8

      Once someone tries to cover it, the person is part of "Press," who needs to get a proper "Permit" from the private owners of Citrovia (the management, etc), because the building management does not want "negative press reviews". The line is crossed once security guards get the discretionary feeling that you are not a tourist and you plan on making money off of Citrovia's landmark. Also, guards are trained to look for cameras that are not iPhones, because the main assumption is any media filmed on DSLRs, cinema cameras, gimbals, mirrorless, ENG broadcast cams, are able to be sold for profit. My two cents coming from a filmmaker in NYC

      He posted on Vimeo before Nathan Fielder paired with him to pitch to networks. He was going months between 10 minute videos and getting under 100k views. His style is incredibly labor intensive, and his appeal is very niche, so I think HBO is a good fit for him. The credits of the show reveal how much paid professional help he gets to make 180 minutes of show per year. Hard to imagine him making videos with high view counts often enough to make real money as a CZcamsr.

      Nah, what this spot doesn't really capture is that 1) he often ends up talking to very peculiar people, just by scratching the surface a bit, and he somehow coaxes a startingly degree of openness out of them, and 2) his handle on visual metaphor is amazing -- every episode has probably dozens of bits that pair 3 seconds of street footage with some abstract thing he's mumbling about in the narration and somehow illustrate that imprecise thing in a surprising and satisfying way. The shots themselves look haphazard, but the editing of what must be thousands of hours of footage into these narratives is remarkable. I've never seen anything like it!
