- New York filmmaker John Wilson, host of HBO's critically-acclaimed series, "How To with John Wilson," talks with "Sunday Morning" contributor Kelefa Sanneh about creating his pseudo instructional videos that, he says, are like nature documentaries about contemporary life, capturing New Yorkers at their most unguarded.
"CBS Sunday Morning" features stories on the arts, music, nature, entertainment, sports, history, science and Americana, and highlights unique human accomplishments and achievements. Check local listings for CBS Sunday Morning broadcast times.

His show makes me feel less alone. The editing and juxtaposition of what he's saying with the imagery is incredibly entertaining and it makes me realize that there really are stories everywhere. I really admire John Wilson.
yes! funny - it makes me feel less alone too. i hadn't realized that. this guy's amazing.
"How to with John Wilson" is a very special kind of documentary. I really love the way that voiceover and pictures are in ironic sync, working as a long joke. At the beginning the series looks like it is made like a simple homework, but anyone who tried to make and edit video will know how much work went into this. And it is a very fresh format too, which is something in 2021. Anti-selfie documentary but not about nature, some kind of a tutorial but not really a tutorial, sometimes it's a philosophical film. Good stuff :)
When something is put together so well that it looks easy, they did a good job
Can you recommend something like that? I really like "How to with John Wilson"!
Well put friend, well put...
I really hope people find this show. It's so worth watching, and a rare type of documentary filmmaking that hardly gets the recognition it deserves.
I can't explain it, but this show is the best thing I've seen in the past decade. SO GOOD. funny and charming and real. love it.
Kelefa did a great job with the humor and questions in this - did a great job bring John out of his shell.
Nathan Fielder is a producer of this show. that should tell you enough that it's worth watching
God I love John and his show. So good
I binged.. I confess I binged .. I loved every moment of every show ! Thank you John !! This was the best invention ever and please let us see the berry movie !
I love How to With John Wilson but the format and narrative that CBS is limited to really distinctly clashes in this feature with the reason why How to With John Wilson is so effective. Most television drapes reality with fantasy, whereas John Wilson reveals the fantasy of reality.
Interesting. What's an example of the fantasy of reality?
@@spfccsmft the scaffolding industry
so well put!!
Watching his show is like curling up with a good book, if the good book had the voice of John Wilson
and the cover has a picture a knocked over garbage can with near a indention in some light detritus that marked where it had recently stood.
I often think about his journals where he’s logged every single thing he’s done for every single day of his life. It’s impressive but stressful to think about.
The memory episode from season 1 is my favorite, specifically the ending montage with the Meatloaf song being played over it!
This guy works extremely hard. I respect that.
I love him! We need more people like him♥️
BEST SHOW OF ALL TIME
I really like the documentary. So creative, funny and also shows the essence of NYC with an interesting plot. I was curious to learn more about John Wilson himself! Thanks for this interview :)
Could someone get in touch with John Wilson? If he is the cameraman that I assaulted in 2016 while i was getting off the train, please have him get in touch with me so I could turn myself in and pay restitution. He caught me on a bad day and I did not need a camera shoved in my face, but if I had known that it was John, I would have stopped and waited for the cops. Thanks!
This would be incredibly interesting...
This could be in the show. I think you should try to contact him on his Instagram
see u in season 3
Such a great show. Thank you JW!!
He's an amazing story teller
I’m obsessed with this show. So good.
I just found him on HBO Max - funny videos. Perfect 👌
I watched this show on a whim and was delightfully surprised by how good it was. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me aware of the small mundane facets of nyc that you would never find out about otherwise. I wish there was way more than just six episodes per season, its one of my new favorites!
I also saw it and clicked on a whim! It is so unique and and I fell in love. You’d think some of these topics seem boring but it’s so funny and interesting to observe the absurdity of humans. Moments of heart sneak in there too.
John, Please keep making videos!
John is the only person I know who talks like me. The cadence, the backtracking, the overall awkwardness of it.
Best show out rn!
I only meow am catching on and all I can say is the fact there are only three seasons & its because John chose to end it is just such a loud through a mega phone sound of what this guys hidden talents really are. He doesnt just look at humanity through a lens, its like he is the lens as the narrator describing every stain & scratch that obscures our vision or paints reality a little more off putting than perhaps what it really is. This is truly one of the most ultimate modern social experiments but the best part is we dont have to listen to endless interviews of people, and even though I wasnt in love with Johns voice initially its grown to be like a beautiful swan song I hear every time I see a new episode because of the needle point accurate raw insights he brings thru truly odd upside down screwball analogies or metaphors that fill in the lines & shapes with vibrant colors of what a often monotonous & also exciting hamster wheel that NYC/life can become for anyone one person.
something kinda amazing about him being on this really dry CBS show loool
Best show on TV!
Love him!!!
this guy and Nathan fielder.. are geniuses
The best thing on streaming rn.
No mention of Wilson’s brilliant stand up.
It’s a shame it’s done after only 3 seasons, hopefully he is able to work on another project soon
Best series ever!
Does anyone know where I can watch the new series in the UK? I love it!!
Wait, this is the loaf of bread guy! What's with all the bread dude?!
This works because it is in New York City. That automatically garners an audience. And, as per sclogse1's comment, I have to give credit also to John.
Maybe it works because of John.
@@sclogse1 Yes, he has a distinctive personality. In the same way perhaps that Joel Hodgson did.
But I don't think that viewers would find a show of this kind as interesting if it was done in Waco, Texas.
@@rr7firefly It's not about NYC because he also goes to other places that provide what he seeks. Which is people. Lots of them.
"How To Cover Your Furniture" broke me.
This show would be a bigger hit on hbo in the 90s and 20s. Now, with CZcams, he can probably find a bigger audience if he uses YT as his platform.
I've been to Citrovia and that seems odd he wouldn't have been able to film since it's a public "attraction" meant to counter the construction and provide (yet another) Instagrammable place. So me taking photos with an iPhone is okay... maybe even a DSLR camera... but once the camera gets larger (not even a large TV or traditional film camera) it's not? What if media was trying to cover the "exhibit"? Is it that he didn't have proper credentials? I know that's not the point of the story so don't come at me, lol, but just curious.
Once someone tries to cover it, the person is part of "Press," who needs to get a proper "Permit" from the private owners of Citrovia (the management, etc), because the building management does not want "negative press reviews". The line is crossed once security guards get the discretionary feeling that you are not a tourist and you plan on making money off of Citrovia's landmark. Also, guards are trained to look for cameras that are not iPhones, because the main assumption is any media filmed on DSLRs, cinema cameras, gimbals, mirrorless, ENG broadcast cams, are able to be sold for profit. My two cents coming from a filmmaker in NYC
@@KenRuan That's more than 2cents worth. Thanks for your info.
Very informative. 👌
This video should be called: "Two guys with similar taste in glasses frames bond"
It's been a day, and still no one has liked this very witty comment. I will like it.
Does anyone happen to know what kind of camera John uses?
it's a sony fs5!
A genius.
I would love to see a david Attenborough john wilson collab
Haven't paid for HBO in years, not sure that this makes me want to go back to it. Maybe you have to see it to want to see it....but I have my doubts.
This show is so funny and absurd! I would love to know what comes first, the script or the video? Sometimes they perfectly match each other.
Hey! Take a look at his appearance on Jimmy Kimmel; he talks about it. The story comes first, then the shots (the opposite would be a lot of work and improvisation).
just watched s1e1 this morning while riding on my indoor trainer. very cringe. couldn't tell if it was real. The way I laughed at the actual mtv footage of him at the spring break concert...
i'll be back for s1e2 the next time i do an indoor workout :)
Genius
2 octaves would be ridiculous. Even 5 semitones would be a lot
ya love to see it
Glad she didn't say .. blessed..
But . Lucky......😊😅
Looks That Fareed Becomes Noorun
Casey Neistat and Andrew Callaghan in one super human. Fun story!
Never heard of him or the show 📺
John you are beautiful, thanks
Good. Never knew anything about this show.
Don't go to therapy.
It would ruin what you are doing.
Trust yourself.
It will save you money, time, and maybe your life.
All therapists need money.
@ 5:45 is that Casey Neistat skiing New York?
He rarely makes vids anymore.
Cash'd out. Enjoying that 💲💲💲

The saddest thing i saw while watching it, was his daily small diary. Every day he enters small boring details of his life. Who will ever read this ?
He became VladTV..
Is there such a thing as a radicalized nerd?
I wonder if he would make more money as a You Tuber.
I'm sure HBO is paying him extremely well. He's both a landlord and an entrepreneur (Stoves on Park Place, Brooklyn).
He posted on Vimeo before Nathan Fielder paired with him to pitch to networks. He was going months between 10 minute videos and getting under 100k views. His style is incredibly labor intensive, and his appeal is very niche, so I think HBO is a good fit for him. The credits of the show reveal how much paid professional help he gets to make 180 minutes of show per year. Hard to imagine him making videos with high view counts often enough to make real money as a CZcamsr.
@@christopherowen2759 He's not a lawyer or a heart surgeon. I guess it is coarsening of America.
I dislike the way the CBS "Sunday Moring" hosts always have goofy smiles. It ruins the show.
He has totally copied Alan Tutorial - he's nicked every bit. And it is nowhere as good!
Just turns on a camera, points at anyone and mutters. Wow.
exactly. and it sells! give it a try!
Nah, what this spot doesn't really capture is that 1) he often ends up talking to very peculiar people, just by scratching the surface a bit, and he somehow coaxes a startingly degree of openness out of them, and 2) his handle on visual metaphor is amazing -- every episode has probably dozens of bits that pair 3 seconds of street footage with some abstract thing he's mumbling about in the narration and somehow illustrate that imprecise thing in a surprising and satisfying way. The shots themselves look haphazard, but the editing of what must be thousands of hours of footage into these narratives is remarkable. I've never seen anything like it!
This is standard CZcams fare. There are so many talented ‘John Wilsons’ on YT, and HBO is only beginning to notice?
Really? Like who else?
Have you seen a full episode of the show? They're quite well-constructed.
share some names. John Wilson is leagues above
This is who we need... Another nerd?
It's like having another Ira Glass..
@@pamgypsyaries8049 Ok, Karen
@@Jonny-cu1cc Wait a second... Pauly Walnuts is a Karen HAHAHAHA. Maybe watch the show, you ignoramus. That is the most ridiculous thing I have heard. Good laugh
I think It's more about sociology, which the nerds I've experienced aren't into. And I've analysed tech nerds talking to each other at cafes. Takes a lot of arrogance to hide that much fear.
for sure its what i need. this show is hilarious.
A genius.
