I Was Wrong About Iguanas! My New Green Iguana Experiences

  • Green iguanas were an animal I had no interest in, and I saw them as very difficult and nearly impossible to work with. Although some of those experiences are still similar, I now have second impressions on green iguanas thanks to my new experiences with these lizards that get really big and super powerful. The iguana in this video was roaming the woods of North Carolina before being caught by animal control and police, and somehow I ended up with it!

I had an iguana his name was Groot. When I first got him he was pretty young and BoNkErS! He would tail whip and he even bit me a few times.
After a lot of handling, socializing and showing him I wasn’t going to eat him, he chilled out. Groot eventually stopped tail whipping, He also never showed any signs of being territorial. People convinced me once he went through his “puberty” he would switch up but he never did.
He had his own enclosure but he mainly enjoyed being free roamed. He enjoyed basking in the window and his favorite treat was mango.

When I was younger my mom used to work at a gym. The owners kept a green iguana named Gumby in a back room with some old buckets of toys, a torn up couch, and a heat lamp. I would spend most of my days after school hanging around the gym and playing with Gumby. He was around 4 feet long and was incredibly friendly. He used to climb up and sit on my shoulders and he loved being pet. One time he escaped and climbed a tree so we had to call the fire department. No point to this story but this video gave me major nostalgia.

People buy reptiles on a whim and can't handle them or get bored with them and instead of going to lengths to rehouse them, they can't be bothered.

Hope it ain’t too late for you and your iggy, but repetition is key when it comes to bonding. It’s going to take a while before your iguana is nicer, but that’s only going to happen if you interact with them everyday. Respectfully.
Talk to them or talk around them so they get used to your voice. Offer food directly either by hand (if the portion is big enough to where he can’t rip a finger off, obviously) or by tongs, sit in a closed off space with them so they get used to your presence (also offer food during this out time), and most importantly... make your movements around them slow and obvious. You should never be moving too fast around an untamed iguana, that’ll just startle them even more. Another very important thing to remember is, if you’re going to pick up your iguana and it isn’t tamed yet, never try to man handle/ grab them. Scoop them up from underneath, feed them while you’re holding them, and be gentle.
During direct feedings, you can try and get them used to being touched by gently stroking their backs while they’re chewing. If you feel that might be too risky, wear a thick glove. It also goes without saying, but know their language.
Direct feeding and out time should be an everyday thing!

So far he’s pretty okay... when I reach my hand into the tank to grab him at first he’ll resist a little by trying to crawl out, but then he settles and let’s me hold him just fine and just chills while I rub his back and sides. I’m hoping if I hold him all the time while he’s young, he’ll be a tolerable iguana. I just love them and really want it to work out.

Honestly though, even the most difficult iguanas I have worked with, at their core were just scared. A bit of understanding and patience goes a long way with that species. You can't expect them to trust you, you have to earn it and I like that about them. Mine are both very special to me, never whip or bite.

I had a green iguana. He ended up being around 6 ft long. We had a small bedroom that we converted into his room. We opened his door in the morning and he would walk free all over our home. We had dogs and cats that all got along with him. He even had his own recliner that he would chill on. He was one of my favorite pets. When I first got him my mom was scared of him. By the time he passed away my mom loved him and cried along with me. They can be great pets but for the right person. They need a LOT of time and attention if you want them to be super tame.

I have an 8 year old iguana named Sam. I raised him from a hatchling. He's very sweet 98% of the time but he can definitely be a jerk. In my experience, if you're calm and sweet to them, they'll generally be calm and sweet back, after you've earned their trust that is, patience is key in that aspect. He's A LOT of work, so I definitely don't recommend anybody get one unless they're prepared and capable of putting forth the amount of effort it takes to keep these guys happy and healthy. Nothing makes me sadder than seeing abused and neglected iguanas. They're such beautiful intelligent creatures and they deserve proper care and respect. If you can get past their somewhat grumpy demeanor you'd be surprised just how much you can bond with them, they're actually very social animals. I won't go as far to say that they experience emotions like a human but they definitely have feelings, individual personalities and preferences. My iguana may not love me in the same way that I love him but he trust me implicitly and he regularly leaves his perch to seek out my company and will choose to snuggle up to me despite being provided with other heat sources. He definitely has some sort an attachment to me beyond just associating me with food and he seems to find comfort in my presence, if that's the closest to love I can get from a reptile, then it's good enough for me.

I had an iguana for 4 yrs before she passed very young that I received from a friend of my mom's. Her name was Cheney and her demeanor was a lot like the second iguana, but she was more calm.
My family took some adjusting but they ended up loving her as much as I did and she is still to this day, one of my favorite 'conversation starters' despite her recent passing. I loved her lots and grieving over her took a big toll on my college for awhile, but I'm happy to be able to have moved onwards after her.
I definitely wouldn't recommend having an iguana to start with to anyone, but if the means are available financially & spacially and the new owner felt they can take it; then I always wish the best of luck seeing as they require lots of husbandry and patience as a larger species.
Thank you lots for taking care of the iguanas you have in your care, it's always very refreshing to see good treatment of these big greenies.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos. I'm glad huge fan and keeper of reptiles and have been since I was a young girl. You and Afroherp keeper are my favorite hands down and I learn something new, almost every video. I used to have two iguanas, male and female and they eventually died of old age. My male got so huge, we had to build a small room and while he wasn't too great with us (I still have a scar on my calf 20+ years later) he put up with us long enough to keep him and his room clean and him fed and all the necessary things. Because they were such a big responsibility and took a huge amount of care, I probably won't have one again. I'm from Washington and I'm known by animal control and others for properly caring for and loving reptiles, so when people move and abandon their reptiles in apartments and some other ungodly places, I'm called. I got called to an apartment where a fully grown female, probably the largest I've ever seen, with a pink jeweled collar on had been left. She had injured 3 others and whipped the hell out of a lady's face. She seemed to know I wasn't there to hurt her... Either that or she could sense I knew wth I was doing but anyway, she went home with me. She would only poop on linoleum and she ruled my house. I basically had a set up where she could bask, chill, eat and all that but she was free to roam. Ordered pizza one night... I set mine down to change the channel and she ran across my living room, jumped up on my coffee table, snatched my 1/4 piece of pizza and took off with it. Anything that was orangish/yellow in color, she wanted. She didn't like most men and trapped my roommate and his coworker in his room and I had to drive home from work and recuse them. She was chasing and whipping them and two grown men were terrified to the point they hid in a room. She would charge the door and head butt it... Crazy girl. The vet believes she was around 13 years old and although she was huge and seemed pretty damn healthy, he could tell she'd been neglected and it had taken a toll on her health. She lived for another almost 3 years, happy, sassy and free and I loved her. Dino dog she was nicknamed and if I ever had another iguana, I would hope to hell it would be just like her because she was so bad ass. Now, I'm a lover of beardies and I have a female with the coolest personality who also prefers to roam. She's on a pretty good poop schedule so I wait until she does her thing, and she's free to go. She's obsessed with my dogs chew toys and will try to munch on them, and she'll lay her whole fat body on it when the dog comes by. She's incredibly sweet and loves to be loved on and I honestly can't get enough of her expressions and attitude. People don't understand my love and fascination with reptiles but people like you do, and I love when I'm able to see very well cared for reptiles with people who obviously care for and love them like I do. BTW I love Stan... My beardie lays on her hide the same way, looking all chunky and happy and that's what makes my heart happy!

I remember my dad had an iguana for most of my early years. Looking back, we didn't have a proper set up for him at all. It was a very cool cage that he escaped all the time but it definitely wasn't ideal. Looking at pictures, he was still very happy and healthy, oddly enough. When he passed away, my dad was devastated. That was probably close to 20 years ago now and he still doesn't talk about it 😔 His name was Iggy (obviously) and he got to 4 feet long probably. My dad always wore gloves when he handled him but he was a pretty chill guy. Most of the time.

So WAY back in the 90s I was given a baby green iguana. I absolutely loved that boy. He was just the best. That, of course, was a long time ago and before we knew what we know now. He quickly outgrew the 150 gallon tank that I had him in and eventually had the run of my little apartment. Just like your little guy in this video he had an area where he would go to bask and an area where he went to be fed. As you can imagine I had to give him to an iguana rescue. I just felt so bad for him. That's no life for such a badass creature. They can be a joy and I miss him to this day but education is definitely the key. They just don't make very good house pets.
Keep up the good work, Alex. 😘

I have known a few like this guy, and they are really cool. Funnily, all the really chill ones were males, except for I think one female. My high school gf had one like the first iguana you had, Earl....Earl was basically dumped off on my ex and LOVED jumping up on her head. Earl was totally insane. I've always wondered what happened to Earl, but that would necessitate getting in contact with my ex.

Blueberries were the way to my Iguana's heart! She was a great reptile. I got her as a young juvenile and kept ger in a glass enclosure for the first year or so. I held her everyday. She was skittish as first but eventually got use to the handling. Then i would keep her out for the time i was home and eventually set up her new home in the closet area. I secured some branches and heat lamps. She only bit me once, while i was feeding her. I think it was an accident. I couldn't really see since she was up in the closet eating and i was reaching to her. I would give her baths and take her outside to bask in the sun. I lived in AZ at the time. She was a beautiful Iguana, great temperament. Try blueberries! Thank you for everything you do!
