Ugh I missed when the leopard geckos were on emerald scales.... I want one from emerald scales so badly!
Hey! I recently acquired a baby box turtle out of the blue and have little idea how to care for it. Itâs in a 10 gallon tank with coconut soil bedding, and some clover plants. I did put a water dish and have been feeding him box turtle food as well as fruit, veggies and dried mealworms. Though he only seems to eat when I bring the tank outside for some light. I do have a heat bad under one side of the tank. A video on box turtle care from baby to adult would be SUPER SUPER awesome
The kittens are adorable!

GoHerping I donât see the turtles on there
Hey Alex! Iâm very happy that youâve rescued some Sulcatas, but it seems that you have read through, and are spreading, some pretty commonly believed but very dangerous misinfo.
-while it has been previously believed that pyramiding in tortoises is caused by diet and lighting, this has been disproven for years by multiple great studies. For example, the one by Richard Fife on reptiles magazine, and âThe end of pyramidingâ by Thomas Roach on tortoise forum. Pyramiding is caused mainly, and to an extent only, by lack of humidity.
While labeled as a desert tortoise, Sulcatas are born during monsoon season in the wild, and spend most of their hatchling and juvenile lives under heavy foliage or in deep burrows. This means that they should be kept in humidity anywhere from 80-100%, as long as temperatures never fall below 80 in the coolest part of the enclosure.
I would also highly recommend putting a lid on those tubs and soaking them daily to help hold humidity and getting the pyramiding to stop. Once it starts it is very, very hard to stop, and humidity is the only way youâre going to do it.
-while tortoises can be kept in large groups, they absolutely should not be kept in pairs. In pairs, there is always a dominant and a subordinate, and both are constantly stressed. I have never seen a pair work out. Very glad you chose to keep them separate.
-I would highly recommend that you replace the water bowls with terra cotta saucers. While ramp bowls may seem safe, they are actually huge flipping hazards, and I very commonly see baby tortoises drown in them. Terra cotta saucers have sloped sides that are easy to get in and out of, and a texture that is easy to grip.
Please, please join tortoise forum and read the links in the descriptions in most of my videos. I would link them here, but too many links seems to make comments go into the spam folder, and I donât want to risk it. These are myths and misconceptions people, especially members of that forum, have been trying to dispel for years. There are other problems with your set ups, but since they are only temporary, these are just the problems that can have lasting effects on both these tortoises and anyone elseâs who believes these myths to be true. I really do care for these tortoises, and would hate to see any harm befall them, or anyone elseâs :)
Their humidity has been hovering at around 80-85% right now due to the rain and summer heat
GoHerping thatâs great! Just be sure that youâre closely monitoring it, and soaking them if you arenât already. It would be great to get their new growth coming in smooth for the next owner, so be sure youâre also feeding them appropriate amounts (high fibered weeds always available to graze on) so that theyâre actually growing. Both pyramiding and smooth growth only occur or change if a tortoise is growing, so itâs important that theyâre getting the nutrients necessary to do so :)
I love this respectful constructive criticism/advice! Go you!
Thank you for taking the time to politely inform us

I use the water from water changes to water plants because it fertilizes them (the plants love it) and I don't feel like I'm wasting water.
Exactly what I was thinking. I hope he sees your comment. đ
I do that too with the fish pond in my yard!
you can also make an aquaponics center and then use the veggies and leafy greens you grow from it to refeed your animals :)

You will probably want to cover them to protect from raccoons. They can and will eat turtles.
It has to be a tight cover though. Raccoons are smart little bastards.
@Kevin *Insert Rocket Raccoon winking gif here*
Lost a few turtles to raccoons in my water garden. Highly recommend
Any animals can eat them
I recently got the tiniest baby box turtle. The previous owner decided not to take care of him properly because he has a little stubby leg. Poor thing has over grown nails, a long beak, and a bunch of flaky dead skin stuck to him.
Heâs doing really well now but I just thought Iâd share this on a turtle video lol
My box turtle has a stubby leg too!
Do you kind fellows know the best place where I can buy a baby box turtle online? I'm from California.
I removed texting Alex like last year and I was like âomg you answeredâ and he was like âheckâ quirky moment
I'm so confused
dude you are a hero. i am consistently impressed by your care for your animals. definitely the most responsible pettuber out there.
Yeah him and snake discovery are great pettubers!

Def 1 of the most responsible.
No he is not he is a scammer . He only takes the stuff in to resell for profit . I can't believe poeple don't get it at all about this guy .
@@Conor_Sannes yes, snake discovery is excellent as well! the thing I like about both of them is that they give full and adequate care to their animals without shaming people who don't do it the exact same way as them.
@@robertmoore1123 Yep, he does. That's why it's a business. He never said he's a nonprofit animal rescue, he's running a business and needs something to live off of. Plus, caring for those animals takes a lot of money. He works hard and deserves to make profit. Rescuing animals along the way is just an added bonus!
I like turtles! Sorry I had to. An eastern box turtle lives in my neighborhood, everyone knows him and makes sure to look out for him to keep him safe
that's actually pretty cool :0
Same thing in a neighborhood my dads side lives in but itâs a cat. But the last time I went there they said it hasnât come there in a while
Same!
I have a personal female African sideneck, Kobe, but I had both a painted turtle and I believe it was a river cooter visit my backyard one time, even though we live literally miles from the nearest large body of water.
The cooter (I think it was) I encountered literally after one of the first days I got back from my job. It had algae growth all over itâs shell, so I couldnât get a good look at itâs pattern, but it was definitely big (twice as big as Kobe, in fact), and looked like a cooter, so I did some research, and since they naturally occur in North Alabama, I came to the conclusion that it was a river cooter.
The painted turtle was digging in our backyard, so I thought that was a female laying eggs, so we marked the place where it dug and everything. We didnât see any eggs, but we didnât see signs of predation, either.
I love how there is this one Robert dude going around the comments saying that Alex is bad lol
Try drilling holes above the waterline and you could just over flow the tubs to save time
But all the feces would still sink to the bottom..
@@Sheghostly depending on how he fills his tanks if he is on a well he could just stick the hose in and it would go oht the holes
I have a Mississippi map turtle but he hated his tank so much even though it was huge! He mostly just basked but I built him a pond and heâs happier now. He also hated being handled. Much happier as an outdoor turtle.
Turtles in general donât like to get handled. In the wild, the only reason they would be above ground-level is because a potential predator has grabbed them.
I read somewhere on how you can pet them, but my Kobe is just fine as she is. đ
*turtlesssssss!!!*
It's funny that you described those turtles as bite sized because that's exactly why laws surrounding turtles under four inches exist in the first place
I adore tortoises. I have a Russian tortoise who is like my child and Iâm always worried Iâm not doing everything perfectly but Iâve had him for not yet a year and he seems to be doing well. Iâm happy you guys are willing to rehome tortoises and I hope they find wonderful homes!
Oh my goodness, I love turtles! Thanks for showing! I have two red eared sliders; Molly and Gojira.
They're beauties! And please ignore the naysayers. You are awesome and doing amazing work!
This channel is amazing and he's very savvy about herps but I just had to say that I'm worried about the set-up in regards to wild animals getting the turtles. We once had a family box turtle get eaten by a raccoon off our porch two stories up and the turtle didn't even live out there - we put them outside sometimes to enjoy the sunlight, wind, and birdsong. I don't know his house and area as well as he does and I don't know how far up off the ground that porch is but I thought saying something would be better than just silently hoping for the best. Other than that I'm looking forward to seeing more turtles and tortoises featured on this channel!
The setup for the aquatic turtles bother me, too.
Yeah, thereâs shade, but thereâs no heater, so he probably needs to check the temp, regularly
I had an Eastern Hermann's turtle and she was so cool,
Very smart and very friendly. She loved clover and wax cherries and we were so close!
I miss her so much...
But the thing is, *turtles are absolutely amazing!*
I find the suction cups on those floating docks to be useless, so I just throw them away and allow the dock to move around wherever it wants, and the turtle doesn't seem to mind at all. I have my pump hoses aimed in a sort of way to allow the current to push the dock closer to the basking light area, so there's that too.
turgsh01
They flip over though
@@deannalachelle9319 lol, wuh? No they don't. If a turtle can flip it, than obviously you got the wrong size for the turtle.
I have 2 of them on different tanks and haven't had any issues with the suction cups. Mine are only a few months old. Hope they last my turtles really love them.
I used to rescue turtles...in bulk...quick tip for filtration...get one big powerful air pump...diy some box filters (for mechanical filter) and some diy fluidized bed filters (biological filtration power houses)..one of each in each tub all of them ran by one air pump....doesn't look pretty but super cheap and easy to build, maintain, and operate, plus side aip pump can be ran indoors and you just need to run airline outside ..can filter everyone of those tubs for less than most people spend on a single canister filter....also if you can get ahold of some used milk crates it's pretty easy to turn them into basking docks/under water hides should a predator come knocking
A diy spondge filter could work for the turtles. King of DIY and SteffJ both use them successfully. You save money and a little less maintenance.
Sponge filters are not the greatest idea for turtles....while yes they are cheap and easy to build, dollar for dollar better than most any other filter out there....once the are well established most turtles like to tear them up or eat them, I'm my experience...I think they the smell of uneaten food starts to build up in them and the turtle goes yum...if used try to get some sort of cage around the filter...a cheap plastic basket turned upside down with a hole cut out the bottom for the air tube works well
@@stephenanderson1358 The diy sponge filters I've seen so far have been covered by the cheap baskets you suggest. It's a temporary setup anyway. I think they work fine for what it is.
Could you maybe try putting plants in there? Just the roots ofc. They filter a lot, you wouldnt have to worry about electricity and prolong the time between water changes.
You could put the plants in plastic pots with holes for the roots to reach the water, but for the turtles not to be able to eat them. Incase theyre poisonous. That would be my idea and Ive seen fish keepers do that a lot:)
Peace lillies!
Or even Lilly pads
The most popular one Ive seen is Pothos and some people use wandering jew as well. đ
@@michaela467 have to be careful with pothos, as I understand it, some species of pothos can be toxic to turtles...Greg Jones has a video or two about it.
you still need a filter even with potted plants.
cause the filter houses the beneficial bacteria that break downs the waste/ammonia into nitrites and then another type breaks down into nitrates. once in the nitrates form it is usable for the plants.

So glad I found this channel! Great work for you taking care of all your cute lilâ babies! We need more people like you in the world. Cheers!
How about adding some aquatic plants to help filter the water?
I'm glad you're more interested in the rehab rather than breeding. There are SO many reptiles that need good homes.
Liz Anderson I agree. We donât need more reptiles in the pet trade. We need to find good homes for the ones that are out there.
I wanted a Sulcata but after research, not anymore. I consider them as an expert level of tortoise. They require a lot of space, pyramiding is irreversible, they dig huge holes.
I feel lucky to live in a place that has consistent 80+% humidity and 80+° naturally. They live great in outdoor enclosures, and my friend even keeps a group of them all outside, moving them in for the winter.
Aww. Cute! I handle turtles and tortoises (and lots of other animals) at work. They are really cool!
Thank you Alex, very cool.
8:45 so funny how they tuck their feet in and look around.
id love a sulcata one day x.x dont have the space or enclosure to care for one, but they're beautiful.
I would LOVE a turtle feeding, the lizard one absolutely made my day.
Love the turtle setup, it would work even for people with smaller spaces.
Such a bunch of cuties!!â€ïž
âDonât get your hopes upâđ
Those Sulcatas are absolutely adorable!
Great video keep up the amazing work and hope you have a great day or night or whatever idk I live in England đ.
We never have a water dish for my sister's sulcata, we have a shallow water/mud pit for Athena to soak in and drink from if she's so inclined. We also water the grass while she's eating so she gets extra water because it gets really hot in Delaware of all places. >>;
I used to work at PetSmart, good on you for saying the price match bit lol. Itâs one of the dumbest things ever.
They donât price match chewy anymore unfortunately.
I just recently rescued a yellow belly slider that had been abandoned (the person who had her thought she was a box turtle) and she has been a wonderful addition to our family! I can't seem to find consistent info on whether or not aquatic turtles like to have company or not though.
Another good video from go herpingđ
My 23 year old female yellow bellied slider loved this vid lol
Please make more videos with Harriet or other box turtles! Boxies are my favorite and they deserve more love
You can use a turkey baster to suck out the poo, then you can stretch the water out for a week. A tank net to skim the debris out.
hey alex i live 3 hours north and we have eastern box turtles too! The way to tell them apart is eye color, shape of the top and bottom of their shell, and their tail length/where their cloaca is
Males
Red eyes
On top more boxy shell near their butt, less sloped
on bottom concave shell (for mounting purposes)
longer tail/ cloaca is relatively farther down their tail
Females
Yellow/brown/purple eyes
on top sloped shell (for mounting purposes)
bottom flat shell
shorter tail, cloaca relatively closer to the main body
Hope this helps! i think the one in the video was a young male!
love the vids alex much love
Those sulcatas thoođđ I already have 4.. but omg!!
I have a sulcata and box turtles.yours are cute to.
Oh nooooo tortoises...... I've always wanted one... My heart. They're so cute.
Yes! You got a sulcata tortoise!
Get a canister filter and have it suck from one and drain into the furthest one, put overflow tubes to the tub next to it and then into the other next to that until you get back to the tank the water is sucked from. It will fill the furthest tub and then it will drain down through them
I screeched when I saw the 10 turtle sanctuary
U can buy some 8 or 10 inch wood like 2x4s & make a really quick & easy temp outdoor run for those tortise while u have nice weather. A couple of stakes to hold the planks & bobs ur uncle! đ
Look at all the babies đ
I made a small wooden raft with a couple pool noodles so it supports weight, the snapping turtles in our lake use it to bask
2:49 OML ITâS SO CUTE
That snapping turtle has grown a lot since you first got it
Awesome man! Recently upload a turtle pond/ sanctuary!!
I legit read it as "turtle snaptuary"
Well now I know to look for a house with tubs outside next time I visit my relatives in NC đ
I have a Eastern box turtle i love him his name is mango
Mason Mitchell I have a juvi đŠ đą and her name is GiGi ( after my grandma)
Amazing video man
Please make an outdoor turtle care video if these turtles are here for awhile especially if you plan on keeping them outdoor during winter!! I recently just got a red eared slider and built a backyard pond; Iâm always looking for some insight on keeping turtles outside :))
It's not recommended to keep turtles out during winter if you're not experienced. The turtle can survive because they do it in the wild but the risk of killing it is just huge
adraa whitemoon Even with a water heater and a heat/uvb fixture over its basking spot?
Love your videos
This was a good video thanks I have a question for the sliders what do you feed urs? Mine only eat pellets and I with theyâd try other things they use to chase fish once in a while but they get lazy and the fish grow.. lol what else can I feed the with pellets? Thanks in advance!
Awesome đ
Quite a jump with a sudden +10 turtles
Steff J has a really interesting flitration set up on her turtle tubs. They seem inexpensive and compact.
Scooter Bird I was just thinking the same thing!
Please keep the common snapping turtle I just got one and would love to see more videos of it
The problem with sulcatas is they get huge like that snapper you have. Get sponge filters and a single air pump to power it all and you'll be set.
Awesome love turtles
Just signed up for a membership đđ
You could use USB air pumps and a sponge filter. I know aquarium co-op sells both. I don't keep turtles so so I don't know how well sponge filters would work. But I just thought I'd put that out there :p
I had three sulcatas, i loved mine but i dont think id ever own one again, because u can own a personable tortoise that doesnt get that big and its the same thing, they just dont get too large. Like hermanns and greeks for example they are great nd dont get so large.
Turtle Feeding: yes please!
Finally a new video!!âĄâĄ
2:03 thatâs just the sound of his monitor lizard fighting a dog
Wow pretty turts
I would love to get one of the tortoises
I'd love to see info on brumation for bearded dragons or assorted animals.
Wow very cool
Great video! But petsmart no longer does in-store price matches to chewy. I guess they finally caught on...
For the turtles you are re-homing that are too small to sell legally, what you can do is (if the new owner is kind enough to support you) sell them a cheap item (like a little bit of turtle feed) for the price of the turtle, so it's not illegal, but you at least get compensated for taking care of the turtle.
Heâs a turtle and heâs here oh yeahhhh
Maybe try a sponge filter? And some minnows they can eat
Awesome video man!!!! May i ask what camera you use? I'm in the market for one âșïž
Just imagine a turtle heaven
I had a box turtle when I was a little kid. My parents did so much for that turtle but she would escape to the neighbors yard occasionally. Then we moved and she escaped her enclosure and we never found her. đą
I think I either want my first reptile to be a frog of some sort, or a tortoise. The Sulcatas seem super cute and it's really cool how big they get, maybe someday I can rescue one from you (should you have more in the future). Unfortunately I'll have to wait until I can afford my own home, as my mom refuses to have caged animals in her house đ
As someone who got a Sulcata as a first reptile, I definitely wouldnât recommend it đ
While they can absolutely handle a learning curve, any mistake that you donât fix immediately can have lasting effects, like pyramiding, and there are a lot of aspects of their care that can really only be understood with experience. I did manage to get the hang of things, but it would have been much easier if I started with something more simple.
@@technocheese1102 Perhaps I'll look into something a bit easier to take care of first then, and work my way up to a Sulcata đ I appreciate your comment, thank you!
MLE No problem!
Iâd love to keep one of your tortoise
You should do another feeding video
Half of your vids start out with "now i know i said i would never do this"
The weird laws are probably in place because these species are considered to be invasive in some areas, so releasing them in the wild after the owner is bored of them is harming the nature. However if the pet is kept well and can grow until a certain size probably the owner is not irresponsible enough to just set them free.
You need to have your own camp kenan if you had a reptile sanctuary what would you call it
Ever considered getting a carpet python or hermit crabs?
