Mates Rates - Toyota Dyna Diesel fuel injection problem

  • After our previous attempts to understand the reason our previously reliable Dyna-Saw suddenly stopped starting. We installed the revolution sensor from the last video, then attempted to start the truck. Unfortunately, even though we got some fuel to pump, the priming pump was not pumping up so we replaced the primer pump as well. Once this was in place, we were able to build pressure on the pump inlet side, and bled air out of that side. We then cranked the engine, with the injector feeds cracked open, to bleed air out of the system. Once we saw fuel at the injectors, the pipes were tightened and we attempted to start the truck. Even after running the engine on ‘start-ya-bastard’ for nearly a minute, the fuel pressure still did not pick up, cracking open the fuel line, we see fuel squirting out with the engine running, last thing we can figure is that there is not enough pressure in the injection pump to squirt out the injectors, where do we look next? Is it an injection pump rebuild? A clean and disassemble? A throw-away and start again? Help me please !

Don't overthink it mate. First make sure that you have lots of fuel coming out of the return line from the fuel pump. If you don't have fuel coming out of the pump return then there is no fuel for the pump plungers. I can't remember on the Dyna, but some of the little Japanese diesels had mesh filters on the banjo bolts, others had little cheek valves in them.If you have that, then you simply have to make sure that the fuel rack can move freely. I have seen fuel racks stuck in a no fuel position. I didn't look to see what sort of fuel shut-off is used on this, but manually bypassing it can often eliminate it as a cause as they push the rack to a no fuel position. It looks like this has a pneumatic governor, so a failed governor diaphragm can also be an issue, but that usually results in excessive RPM.

Appears to be vaccum fuel kill. Try manually moving the rod one way and try it if that don't work try it the other direction. Also get a fuel jug and drop a hose in it over to the inlet of the transfer pump and see if it will run off that to eliminate a tank or line problem. I would like to see how much fuel you are getting out of the bleeder on the fuel filter when you pump the primer. All this can be seen in the pic at 12:30
