  • One of the drivers in my MDR-7506 headphones decided to stop working one day. So I set out to repair them.
    While not quite the results I was hoping for due to the parts I used. After a couple weeks of using the headphones after this I am still not happy with them. If I can find another real Sony speaker I'll repair these. But it's not that likely.
    This is the second of two videos that I initially thought were lost for good. But I was able to recover the video files off the corrupt SD cards.

    I get a lot of questions about my headphone cable with the microphone built in. Here is what I use: amzn.to/2N98Eca

    Thank you for the idea of adding the jack, I was working on a pair of MDR-V6 and wanted to verify some things and found your video with the jack addition. Awesome. The original cable had gotten very sticky and I salvaged the plug and threw it away before I started adding a new cable. So glad I put the jack in instead! The drivers, however, look fine, but I have always wondered if I may have bought a knock-off (decades ago). Didn't think Sony would put a cable that bled over time. Had a nice pair of 7506's that I lent to a friend and they were given away so I no longer have a proper set to compare to.

    I had a similar problem with my MDR's. Sadly it's in the ear that I would normally listen to (right side off). You've confirmed it's time to buy a new pair (they're a workhorse for sure!!)

    I have a pair of Japan made V6's with the Yaxi Stpad2 LR and I love these headphones, I go to them more often than my other like 20 sets. Both the 7506 and the V6 are GREAT headphones.

    Consider getting a pair of the Auvio 3300090 "Concert-class" headphones for comparison purposes. When Ratshack was still around as a brick and mortar store, the original Black ones were my go-to as recommendations out to people, not only for the fact they were probably the best ones they ever sold (and that's saying a lot for end-days radioshack) but the fact that the headphone cable coming off of them was EXTREMELY LONG in comparison to other headphones on the market at the time. they're something like 7 feet or so. it's incredible. Head-Fi has a couple things under "HF-202" for them, which was their original model branding. 50mm pioneer drivers that actually don't suck.
    There's a newer model pair out there under catalog number 3301607 I have not tried yet, but it seems to be the same thing with blue accents and the newer Auvio logo from the end times.
    As you are a man of music I'd love to hear your opinion on them. I've been purchasing whatever pairs I've been able to find left-and-right. there is currently a pair on ebay for $24 which, when considering their original price was $40, isn't too bad a deal. the pleather pads also take a couple years of abuse before they start cracking.

    When I had to replace the ear pads on my Audio Technica headphones, I looked around online for replacements. Everything I found turned out to be way more expensive than when I just sent an email to their support. ended up getting both pads for ~$5 shipped.
    IDK how Sony's support handles replacement parts though, so YMMV.

      Commodorefan64 I use a pair of those too, the only problem is that the 3.5mm plug broke very soon after I got them but that was not a big problem for me because I just chopped that off and soldered a 6.3mm jack onto the cable because that is what I have on most of my devices, one of which is my main mixer that I have my pc connected to with a professional sound card from m-audio. I have also built an extension cable with a plug on one side and a socket on the other so that I can use my good quality headphones when I am watching TV while lying in my bed without losing any quality through a wireless connection.

  • @vitor900000
    @vitor900000 Před 3 lety +1

    Here is a thing. No 2 drivers come out exactly the same from the manufacturing process.
    What they do is they always pair 2 drives that are very similar to one another on the same headphone.
    Since you got a random new driver the probability of they being out of sinc is very high. You could try to add a potentiometer on the lauder side and balance them manually.
    And like another guy said on the comments did you check the polarities? To work properly the driver membrane must be moving out when a current is applied. If you put them wrong they will still work but they will be quieter and will not respond well to many frequencies.

    I have never had a pair of headphones fail electronically. Most of them simply fall apart mechanicly after 3-5 years of daily use.

    • @TechTangents
      @TechTangents  Před 6 lety +4

      yeah, it was really strange. I baby them so I don't think it was my fault. Mechanically they are very nice.

    • @rich1051414
      @rich1051414 Před 6 lety +1

      It's kind of impressive, imo. Low power speakers take a lot of use to bite the dust, the body holding up that long is an accomplishment, but I am sure there was something faulty with them for it to die so fast.

      3-5 years it's too quick to me. Only if you're always bearing them somewhere or some dj job or throwing in your appartments literally ))
      My AKG K-66 still looks good. The age is about 20 years or maybe more. I've recently "fixed" the cable but that happened that it wasn't the cable but the driver :)) I was stupid to not think about "why the multimeter shows 32 Ohms on one ring and the ground and no Ohms on others" )) Actually I've thought that "there must be some parasite connection". After I've finished the jack's healing I've realised that it's not the jack's "fault" but my sleepy head :D
      Now I'm going to replace the drivers with a pair of Chinese. I've bought two pairs and will try to listen them before completing the assembly. Also I'm trying to understand if there is a chance to tune them. There are white "papers" (some synthetic material) with closed holes on them. And I've heard that if you put another paper of the same shape you make them less bassy. So making a hole in that "paper" maybe will add more bass.
      All videos on YT are generally about the same but not about the engineer-grade tuning.

  • @Chriva

    Check if whatever you use to listen to music from has a DC offset on the output. Literally having them plugged in WITHOUT listening to music could be enough to kill headphones if it's bad enough :)

    • @TechTangents
      @TechTangents  Před 6 lety +2

      Mostly a Yamaha VSX-357 and Fiio X5 gen 2 so it should be fine. I could measure them to be sure though.

    • @KiR_3d
      @KiR_3d Před rokem

      @@TechTangents Hi, I bet there was no offset. I've watched one guy's video where he did explained the reason.
      It's because the dynamic drivers contains very tiny hair like wires inside the membrane. They're usually glued to the membrane so they oscillates with it all the time you're hearing music or anything else. Over time a wire can break off in a specific place. It's usually at a membrane's edge but it can be even in a middle.
      Maybe you can kill a driver with a constant DC offset but I'm not good at this topic. So I can't tell "yes/no".

    You totally destroyed the replacement driver you installed. You took the new drivers out of the shipping box and slammed them down on your table top. Ouch. When you had trouble inserting the one driver, that did not fit you, were too rough. You were pressing down on the center of the driver. That's a dome attached to a voice coil.

    Not trying to talk **** or anything, but you were way to rough on handling the drivers. Dropping them, wasn't a good thing. Headphone drivers are very delicate, so you have to handle them gently. They must be mounted correctly, if they don't fit well, modify they headphone carefully enough to help fit. Every little thing inside a headphone cup affects the sound. Also new drivers need to be broken in. It can take up to a month, depending how much you use them. After the break in, the sound usually changes.
