I really appreciate the down-to-Earth advise. I recently bought a 2006 Cayman S in very good condition. It was well-cared-for. However, I am paying attention to your suggestions and will check out some of the issues that you mention, to see if any exist with my car. Thanks again for the videos about your Cayman. Subbed.

I have a 997 911 that I maintain myself. I have to say it's been an absolute joy to work on. Parts in the a UK are not too bad in price. So far there has always been a fairly cost effective way out of spending lots of money. Many parts from the dealership are way cheaper than my Hyundai parts are from the dealer. There is also scope for getting excellent second hand parts as they are well built and often well looked after.
My biggest job so far was a new clutch. One of the easier ones to do. The parts were twice the price of the same make clutch kit for my BMW M52.
I actually think Porsche sports cars are better built than BMW.
Saying that there is huge scope to get ripped off by repair shops.

Repair shop quoted me 3k for clutch/flywheel job. Parts online were $580.

Well spoken, good feedback ! The previous owner bought it "cheap", probably put all his money in it and forgot that Porsche's do have a cost for good maintenance. I'm happy to see that you are going to fix it the correct way :-)

my Cayman is currently covered in red dust after I had to take it down a gravel road to reach an airfield (like ya do). I'm happy for it to stay dirty until I have time to wash it properly. Dust doesn't hurt it in the garage. Washing it wrong....does. I also wax it regularly to ensure anything (like dust) is only really damaging a layer of wax, rather than the clear coat. So far, my paint is almost like new. One of the Cayman's I walked away from buying was a red one, and the guy said "This is my baby and I wash it every weekend". Sadly, from the paint, I could tell he wasn't lying. I didn't say anything to the poor guy but the paint was swirl city.

Lots of good advice. Only thing I didn’t like was telling people not to drive your car :(. I have a like new 987.1 with 50k on it. Hand wash and do all maintenance. Have a few rock chips but that’s all. Fixed some and will fix the others. Enjoy your car! Just make sure to have snow tires for winter and summer tires for the other seasons. Easiest way is to have 2 sets of wheels so you can just switch them each season. These are great cars...drive them! I live in Ohio btw. Love all your videos

I agree, I'm buying a Cayman and I live in Colorado. It's going to be my daily, but I don't have to go in to work anymore, so I won't have to drive if the weather's too bad.

I once heard that someone had the most fun in a 911 with snow tires on it. If I had one I’d drive the snot out of it in all seasons, it’s supposed to be a car. Not an investment. Just maintain it so it doesn’t rust and enjoy, hand it down to your kids, don’t resell it.

Agreed, you need a fair amount of tread on the rears especially, span mine with 2.5mm on the rear when I hit standing water on the motorway. A lesson in driving defensively too. Change the rear tyres before they get below 3mm, drive slower when its really wet. Winter tyres in the cold, they're better at clearing water too.

Hi Nathan new suscriber to your channel. Have a 987.1 Caymen S myself and think its a fantastic car, do all my own maintenance work on it and thoroughly enjoy it. These cars are so easy to work on and I find parts are not that expensive. At the min I'm about to do a bit of preventive maintenance on it and fit a new Waterpump an Thermostat while she is parked up over the winter. I find a lot of people want to own these cars but cheap out on the maintenance which you can't do, I'm so lucky that I can do all my own work as don't think I would trust anybody else to do it. Anyway keep up the good work. Mick, Northern Ireland 👍🍻

Looks like a lot of swirls on the car. It's really a good idea to do a full paint correction before ceramic coating. Also, if you wash the car properly with a mitt, top to bottom, 2 buckets and proper lubrication you won't scratch anything.

Great video Nathan. I appreciate the straight forward commentary on the issues and as you point out, prevention is always better than cure. I am looking at 2006/7 Cayman S manuals which are now pretty pricey here in Australia, circa AUD 70k with 100k kilometres, so in a nutshell a PPI from a reputable specialist seems to be the way to go. Thanks again.

I tend to agree about the Continental Extremes. I used them on my 987 Boxster, and they rubbed down pretty damn fast. My new 981 came with Michelin Pilot sport +, which are great. It's OK in the rain, but I take it a tad easy, normal driving is fine with that tire, but it's really best in dry warmer conditions.

Great job on the video as always Nathan!
I had a 2006 Cayman S in red with the tan interior and you're absolutely right, it was just not appealing.
Sold the car at a nice profit so all was well.
I'm looking to get another Cayman soon and was wondering if you could look into doing a video on which cars are actually built in Germany.
I mention this because my 06 Cayman S was actually built in Finland by Valmet I believe they are called. A respected coach and 3rd party automotive assembly company some car makers over there in europe use from time to time.
I discovered this 3rd party build in doing the research on my car for IMS issues.
Anyway, it may help Cayman owners or owners to be sort out an actual German product as opposed to one produced somewhere else.
Thank you again for all the very knowledgeable info you provide.

      @EDavidM100 Před rokem

YES! I've tied lots of brands and they all are crappy and don't fit unless you pay $400 but then those are super heavy mine is from EBay: "Coverzone" Indoor Custom Fit, Car Cover “Porsche Boxster 986-987 1996-2012” great custom fitting cover with mirror ears that are in exactly the right place it's very light, fits tight goes almost to the ground, fits into a small bag and reflects a lot of sun for $100 so far I've had it in the Cali sun for a year. I hate to wash my car so I never leave it in the driveway without it being covered that way your wash lasts a lot longer. enjoy

Why not drive them like a race car? I know bunch of people that races the Cayman in endurance racing and they help up just fine. Porsche design them to handle to be pushed on the track as long as you maintain them properly . Otherwise, I personally think you bought the wrong product.

I would say a fair amount of urban Porsche owners are not buying them for there capability but for there image or looks which is fine because at least they are getting a great car that is capable. But when they get a little older maybe buying from a used car lot or they unwittingly take it to a mechanic that doesn't know Porsche or they just don't want to pay for professional work or maybe they can't even find someone that knows what they are doing, it's a problem ... . next thing you know a lot of things are messed up. Wow those disks!!! haha somebody was happy to save $5 there!!!. I am from Cali and yes it does rain here but for sure not to often, anyway as far as tires go it's so short sighted to run anything but the best such as Michelin Pilot Sport 4S which is a 300TW tire, they are very good in the rain, wear well and are superb for handling, braking and even tracking ... and wait didn't you buy a Porsche for those superior attributes anyway? ya anyone watching you Nathan I'm sure bought it for its handling and all around performance. Nathan is right don't be cheap especially if you are doing your own repairs - cheers ('06 Boxster S)

Recently bought a quite high milage 996.1 c2 manual. All the maintenance and jobs that I can do myself will be done and documented. See one droplink knackered down, replace 2, same with the coffin arms and forks on the front ... Better to keep up with maintenance and repairs than not doing it.
