For the final story, this is why you create “Lines and Veils” As a DM you must create rules that are not to be crossed. Unless it is agreed upon by everyone. These things should include, “sex, relationships, rape, incest, child death/murder, taboo topics”. Set rules and enforce them.

I suspect when you say "relationships" you mean romantic ones? Because family, friends, business partners, and rivals are all examples of relationships. Playing a TTRPG without relationships is like playing Yahtzee with only one die; yeah, it is possible, but all you did was make your entire game needlessly complicated and unfun.

    • @napoleoncomplex2712

No child murder unless it is hilarious child murder. Stabbing Little Timmy is banned. Burning down Little Timmy's orphanage with a series of fireballs placed strategically at the exits before raising the children as an army of tiny skeletons that you go on to terrorise the rest of the town with is encouraged. Your ultimate goal is to make the GM give up on his or her original idea for the big bad, because nothing could be more cartoonishly evil than your party. Bonus point if the big bad and big good of the story join forces in a desperate attempt to stop you.
As Xykon from Order of the Stick once said, it's important to go the extra mile.

And murder can just be funny, it’s also like the core thing new players do. “Game where I can do anything! I kill everything!” ( just agin, make sure they don’t go overboard)

In the dog story everyone was at fault. They should've spoken up immediately the first time it happened. Letting it happen is a stamp of approval for the guy doing it. I disagree. As a DM, I see myself as primarily responsible for the safety and comfort of my players. If something comes up that hasn’t been discussed in Session 0, especially in a situation like this, where the potentially offensive action was put in a private note to the DM (so it is reasonable to assume the players weren’t immediately clear on what was going on), it would absolutely be on the DM to pause the game and have a discussion with all the players about what is and is not okay within their game, and to put a stop to anything that wasn’t fully and clearly agreed upon.

    I'll give y'all a happier story:
I DMed a one-shot for my husband, his brother, and brother's wife for brother's birthday party. Fun little story from a creator on DM's Guild-- Shadows over Whitarrows. I won't spoil things, so go enjoy the module. In a random encounter in the forest, one of the monsters climbed a tree so as to not be in danger while performing ranged attacks. Brother's wife, a barbarian, clears her throat and adjusts the greataxe on her shoulder, saying, "So, it's how high up in the tree?" I recognized the glint in her eye and asked, "You're going to cut down the tree?" The two guys start laughing in glee when she says, "I'm going to cut down the tree." The tree gets cut down, I give a visible roll to show which direction the tree will fall, brother's character almost gets squished but Dex saves out of the way, and the monster gets squished by the same tree it tried to use for protection. That was a fun encounter.

Yeah, agreed. I always make sure everyone knows each other's limits before any game starts, even when i'm not the DM. I sometimes remind the DM at session zero that have occurred that they gotta ensure limits and wants are all thought of so nobody deals with uncomfortable or upsetting stuff they don't want to do in a game. Like if one player refuses to have alcohol in a game, take that into consideration. Or if one diesn't want anything involving stomach sickness, don't have any items or poisons that can cause stomach problems as a side effect. The list goes on. Those are random examples off the top of my head cuz they are on my list of limits on what i will and will not accept in any D&D games i'm playing in.

It was something that made sense in context, I know, but someone knew it was a hard no for them -but it never got posted as a taboo topic-

@mrsplays9817 you never should have been held accountable for something you could not have known was off limits. It should have been a simple "alright, strike that from the game, after this tiny ret-con we won't be bringing this up anymore" easy as that. Respectfully to the DM, if there is a list of clearly established boundaries and players don't list theirs, you do not coddle those players. They are responsible for their own wellbeing. They have the right to add things going forward but no one else should be responsible for their failure to protect themselves.

About being on your phone: My old DnD group had a relatively unspoken rule in that, in a party of 6 people, you have 5 other people's turns to decide what you want to do on your turn, so if it gets to your turn and you're distracted or you take several minutes looking through spell sheets when you could've been doing that while it wasn't your turn, we skip your turn.

As a Rules Lawyer (a trait I'm trying to improve on), I've definitely had more than my share of stupid mistakes when it comes to D&D rulings. When I was younger, I tried to show off my knowledge and flaunt "mistakes" made by others, which of course was the WORST way to approach this. As I got older, I shifted more to wanting to be helpful with that knowledge, but I still very often went about it in too confrontational manner. All of this was MY BAD (to be clear).
More recently, I've been trying to go about it from a different angle. If someone at the table seems uncertain about a ruling or decision, I offer up the information and follow it with "But the DM makes final decisions. It's their campaign, so their ruling trumps R.A.W." Other than that, I tend to leave it alone unless someone seems to be going out of their way to flaunt balance rules (ignoring disadvantage, giving self advantage without cause), basically things that are impacting game enjoyment and happening a lot. Then I'll usually make a side comment or mention something to the DM about it and let the DM handle it how they see fit.
In short: DM Trumps Rules As Written. ALWAYS. And even if you are trying to be helpful, there's definitely more helpful ways you can approach this process.

I've got a DM who doesn't have as many spells memorized as I do. And I've got a player who cheats. So when we have fights, she's always using spells that require concentration and never mentions it to him, nor does she roll when she needs to do a concentration check, nor does she drop the previous spell when she has a new concentration spell.
It works to our advantage that she's got three concentration spells up, but ... I don't want to be a rules lawyer and pipe up every time she does it. He *made* her character for her and supposedly checks our sheets after we level up. And it's not that I dislike our DM, he's fine. But sheesh, it's hard to hold back, even when it's to my detriment as a player and he's got us ganked with 10 enemies and a boss. The rules lawyer in me wants to say it *so bad.*

@@Midori_SeabreezeAs a DM, Im going to forget rules or details about a combat sometimes. I LOVE when my players simply go "Hey can he cast two levelled spells in a turn?" or "Wasn't he grappled? His move is 0." In most games, DMs are gonna play mostly RAW and will forget lots of those big rules.
Imo, its only a problem if its unasked for or if you're directly arguing against the DMs ruling.

Yea I 100% agree with you DM is final ruling. My only exception to this is when rulings are inconsistent. I.e. DM rules something works one way one time, I say cool good to know, then next time arbitrarily change that rule to something else. This has happened to me on more than one occasion with the same DM and it was exceptionally frustrating the second time around. I prepared for a scenario based on the way he ruled the first time, but got rinsed on the second time around because he thought it was cooler that X should happen this way now.

Oh dude, I feel you 100%. Just this Friday, the one day I get to play instead of DMing, I got way too passionate about a rules matter and didn't realize until afterward that I'd definitely brought a little too much energy about it. I just really wanted to help a new player get the most out of what she wanted to do, and the DM wasn't clear on the rules. I felt so incredibly bad afterward and while play got back to having a great time after, I was still beating myself up about it. I apologized profusely after the session and explained myself. The DM was super cool about it, and said I had actually convinced him. I looked up some rules stuff for him so he didn't have to and found a variant rule that supports running things the way he's used to, as well as reminded him that I 100% support and respect whatever way he chooses to do things. He's a great guy and I think he completely understood me, which was a huge relief. I always include that we can do things however they want, but I failed to make it sound that way. Just one more lesson learned.
Such a fine line between being helpful and being a jerk, sometimes. :P Devil's in all those little details.

So, I have a player who is a chaotic mess. The type to knowingly set off every trap even after being assured there is nothing behind it worth the damage. So, I had him infected with lycanthropy, in the form of a werebear. Now, I wasn't aware that the lycanthropy didn't manifest as a separate identity. But. I did that. And when we read the rules that lycanthropes were just beasts. We all kind of waved that off because we liked the idea of the player having to have a mental battle with the lycanthrope and fight for control over their physical form and its been a fun little jeckyl and hide type ordeal! Much love!

    • @RaethFennec
      @RaethFennec Před 9 měsíci

Werebears are... good aligned even when they shapeshift, have immunity to physical damage from non-magical sources and advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks involving smell. I think it's just a straight upgrade to a player to make them a werebear. Can't they also shapeshift at will? Though I'd probably require some kind of spiritual journey and time for the player to master that. Usually it's only passed on by other werebears to trusted apprentices and friends who they've vetted and trained in their ways and understanding of the world as creatures of good. I'd definitely have their werebear blood fight them any time they try to do something that could be evil or morally wrong, like stealing or lying. Maybe have them make a Wisdom check to try to push through their flourishing Good instincts to do it anyway, and then let them know that despite themself, they feel bad after doing it.
That sounds really fun though, however you handle it! Just playing it out in my head a little for fun and typing it out while I think. I hope it goes great and you get a ton of awesome stories out of it!

The last story, i agree with you two. If it was agreed upon by everyone involved in the game, whatever. But time and place matter, as do the people there. I wouldn't bring that stuff into rpg stuff ever in any circumstance, but some people probably do, so whatever.
Though it is really messed up what he was doing in the first place, it's even worse that he not only did it during a d&d game, but that the DM even allowed it and did a one on one with him that involved it, but didnt inform the others what twisted stuff went on, even if only telling them the less detailed version of "the ranger did weird/strange stuff with his dog". Instead the DM just said nothing.
Tyat implies heavily that the DM either was just too scared to say no, was super chill and supported anything players wanted no matter how weird and messed up, or the DM was into it too but didn't tell the other players directly cuz he didn't want to lose them as friends over the weird stuff he was into. No matter what, it should never have happened. If the ranger and the DM wanted to do that, they could have went separate from the d&d sessions and did a separate one on one that did not involve the main story and players in any way.
The players also are at fault though. Especially when the rogue and cleric's players are married irl, and the rogue could have told cleric or warned her "hey, the new guy is weird and does questionable things involving his dog, be aware of that before you go to the next session". Like, the cleric should have been warned beforehand. But what would gave prevented it even sooner was if they talked to ranger and/or the DM about it when it started being odd, before it got any weirder or escalated that far. Like, everyone us at some level of fault in that situation. But the ones most at fault are the Ranger (obviously) and the DM himself for not only allowing this, but actively encouraging it by doing 1 on 1 with the ranger involving it.
That whole thing was easily preventable by either DM saying no, ranger letting that side of himself be let out elsewhere in other ways that weren't a D&D game, and/or the players talking about it with at least DM, if not both DM and ranger.

There is nothing wrong trying to bring that stuff into your game when you think people wont mind it as its all just fantasy/roleplaying.... and specially because noone said anything about it, it was morelikely understood as approval. Also... when you are never allowed to bring your kinks/fantasies up about ''weird'' stuff, you will never find likeminded people and will be stuck on your computer...... oh wait... we alreaday have a Gen Z.

I have been running D&D at my local game store for a few years & have had to deal with a few players who decide to go off on their own & doing stupid stuff.
A player joined an established group that I was running for because there was an opening. The first few sessions were okay, fought a couple battles together. The group was on a mission (I'm pretty sure they were rescuing someone from a high security prison). The group got to a point where there were traps & puzzles they had to disarm or figure out to find the right path forward. The group was in a safe, defensible area to discuss how get past the next area (6 doors, all doors were magical in some way). They asked the bard questions since he's an arcane caster but his arcana rolls were low so his character didn't get any kind of sudden insight about the magic of the doors. While the group was talking, the bard decides to sneak down the hall & open the door farthest from the group because his character was bored. The group doesn't realize this at first, by the time they do, the bard has walked into the room behind the door.
In the room, the bard sees small piles of golden items towards the back of the room, some gold statues of what looks to be various humanoids in different poses scattered around, the walls & floor have a golden color to them, & at the back wall, there's a large gemstone with gold veins running through it on a golden pedestal. The bard goes into the room because he wants the treasure. I have him make a couple saving throws while he's in the room. When he passes one of the statues, he looks at it & I tell him the statue looks weird, there's a look of horror on the statues face & the statue is positioned as if it was heading towards the door. The bard decides to keep going into the room towards the treasure piles.
At this point, (equivalent of maybe 30 seconds for the characters), the rest of the group notices the bard is missing & sees the door that's open. They go down the hall to see what's happening. They see the room, know it's obviously a trap, tell the bard to get out, the bard says he wants to grab the treasure. I still have him making saving throws for every round he's in the room & the failed saving throws are starting to noticeably affect him. His feet & hands start to feel stiff, he's having trouble walking normally. He says this to the other characters, they have the fighter run in, pick up the bard, who has slowly been turning to gold, & run out of the room. Once out of the room & the door shut, the transformation starts to reverse & the bard returns to normal (nobody was high enough level for dispel magic at that time). The characters were upset with the bard for endangering himself & possibly the party by going off on his own like that, especially not knowing what was behind any of the doors. They said that they need to work together to survive this because it's only going to get more dangerous.
The bard started to act out a bit after that, trying to be a front line fighter during combat even though they had a support build, which caused an unnecessary drain on the cleric's healing. The player didn't last in the group for much longer.
As far as the third story, I don't know how the DM could have let it get that far, except if they aren't the type of person who likes to tell people "no".
In the game I run, a player attempted to do something inappropriate with another player but I put a stop to it really quickly. The players were friends for years, but I didn't want it to escalate past a certain point.
The same group as above (not including the bard) were in a dungeon. As background info for the campaign, the characters were kidnapped at 1st level & thrown into a cell on an island. They were being watched through magic by beings who placed bets on them. So they were being watched all the time & the characters eventually found this out. The characters also know that if one of the watchers wins big on something they do, they might be rewarded with something they need.
In one of the dungeons, the male drow cleric died, had to be reincarnated, & came back as a female halfling. They got some makeshift clothes for the cleric & found a safe room they could stay in courtesy of one of the watchers who won a large bet. The room had enough beds for everyone, a bath, fresh food, & I think some basic clothes for the cleric (this was a long time ago so my memory is fuzzy).
After getting clean & eating, they all go to bed. The tiefling rogue tries to climb into bed with the halfling cleric & the cleric says that they back away from the rogue (they have been in a new body for less than a few hours at this point). The rogue doesn't back off & the player seems a bit unsure what to do, so I have a large hand come down from the ceiling (like in Legend of Zelda), pick the rogue up, drop him in a bed on the opposite side of the room, do a finger waggle of shame, & disappear into the ceiling. The rogue apologizes, the player says he was trying to joke around, & we all move on.

To the first one, you can always have an in-group rule to resolve things. For example, lay out all the ideas people have, and then each roll for highest. Highest roll gets the go-ahead. If it's a point critical to the plot, DM gets it. Something like that. Or have the DM roll with advantage on something like that so it's usually the DM's call, but sometimes the player's call. Some process that arbitrates consistently, fairly and functionally to the agreement of all involved. I mention dice because randomness is often accepted as fair.
A deck of cards would also work and may be even better, because then it's also part-deterministic whether someone gets a break or not.

The DM may have had no moral complaints and so saw it as being basically the same. If the story is real (I'm VERY doubtful based on the pacing, how no one said anything, and the way that the clickbait subject got predictably amped up with the non-consensual fluids exhibitionism stuff) I'd imagine it may well be a situation involving one or more neurodivergent late-teens or early-20's. I could totally see that happening.

To the first one I memorize rules way too easily so I'm often the "rules lawyer", but trust me when I say you'll enjoy the game a lot more if you don't worry about the rules/strive for perfection, you have to learn to take an "ok but this is how it's going to be" which if you were raised perfectionist is hard but you'll have so much more fun if you do. The rules are there as a story telling mechanic, but like anything in story telling, it can be thrown out the window and the story won't just spontaneously combust.

There’s someone, I think it was Zee Bashew, who made a distinction between “Rules Lawyers” and what he calls “Rules Traditionalists”. They both prefer adherence to RaW, but the lawyers generally try to use it to their benefit while the traditionalists simply find it the most fun. The traditionalist is the more likely of the two to help the DM when they’re struggling to make a call, or ask questions (not confront) if something conflicts with their understanding, and roll with the call that the DM makes.

Relistening to the last story for a second time, I think the ranger was trying to make it seem like he was doing something awful with his animal companion, but it was going to be totally innocent if the party actually investigated. For example, at the end when the dog's mouth was wet it was going to turn out she had a water bowl or bowl of soup down there or something. This based on how much he was pushing it, how obvious he was being with all the innuendoes and attention he was drawing to it, but most of all, based on how the DM went along with it.
Of course there are some really sick people out there that violate consent and morality like this, but I find it hard to believe that the DM would engage if that was really what was happening. I looked at the original post and it's a little sus that the OP didn't try to get the details from the DM or anything. So maybe the whole thing is fake in the end and it doesn't matter.
Also, bestiality is not a kink, and for sure deserves to be shamed. It was super uncomfortable to hear y'all be so soft/try to respect someone who might be roleplaying that. It's one thing for a bard to seduce a dragon; it's usually played as a joke, and if not, in DnD they're more intelligent than humans and some can take human form. It's another to even imply you're doing things with an animal with a lower intelligence that cannot feasibly consent because they have no concept of consent, even if you use the spell to communicate with animals. And I'm pretty sure it's been proven that acting out these things in fantasy does not keep sick people from actually doing them, but in fact emboldens them to make their fantasies real.

I agree that Ranger was drawing a strange amount of attention to his actions and so could be interpreted that he was simply trying to mess with people but it's kinda telling that the DM went with the group to kick Ranger when he could have otherwise explained the whole thing and everyone could have moved on from there. "That's not funny, and really kinda disturbing. Please stop the joke now." but it didn't go that way.
Also, assuming the story is legit, of course.

Aslong it stays a fantasy in a roleplaying event and doesnt involve real animals, there is nothing wrong with it. And you might be pretty sure ''it is proven that acting out these things in fantasy does not keep sick people from actually doing them, but in fact emboldens them to make their fantasies real.'' but you are just making assumption based on your opinion and is nothing researched. And i can speak from own experience and not assumptions.

Remember, rules lawyers are good-aligned and helpful. Much like real lawyers, they're often unfairly maligned.
Rules Nazis are rules lawyers gone bad, who create problems out of their knowledge or obsession. :P
Be sure you don't offhandedly call someone a rules Nazi without them deserving it!

The last part of that Puppy Love story rose to the point of RPG sexual assault. "Ranger" was using the game as an excuse for [psychologically] sexually assault the "Rogue as Cleric" player.
I gotta be honest, if it happened at my table, I'd have to be talked out of beating the crap out of "Ranger" at that point.

It seemed the ranger was trying to create a reaction from the other players. Starting off with little hints and escalating. They wanted their character to be confronted about this. For the DM to let it happen this long and even a one on one session, maybe nothing really transpired but they wanted that hesitating thought in every ones mind so he would be confronted about it. Now after being confronted I have no clue where they wanted the story to go

Because it apparently needs to be said
NON-HUMAN ANIMALS CANNOT CONSENT TO SEX WITH HUMANS.

    • @RaethFennec
      @RaethFennec Před 9 měsíci

That is very true. However, that is beside the point. In this case, they involved two or more humans in a sexual situation without their consent, and that is also NOT OKAY. Sexual fantasy role play between two consenting adults is, of course, completely okay no matter how comfortable anyone else might be with it. That's between them. Just be safe and don't involve people who haven't consented. It's shocking, but yes... it actually does need to be said, so we should always be sure to educate people who don't realize this, rather than just hating on them.
Now, if they know better, the gloves are coming off and it's time for a (social or legal, depending on the situation) smack down.

With story 1 I gotta say, depending on where you are the amount of hours of difference between daylight and night (and by extension morning and evening) can change pretty drastically depending on where you live. I'm in Australia and during winter, it gets pretty dark and I'd be freezing by 1930ish, in summer the same level of darkness isn't until closer to 2200. It's currently 2030 where I am and it's evening (early summer) and I could still move around outside without any worry of not seeing small potholes or dips in the path, they'd still be clear and I still have both my pedastal fan and the household air conditioneron on. Just a note for "but at this time of day there's this much light/warmth" because it really depends on where and when you are
