Johnny Gimble. A true legend. He once was asked what's the difference between a violin and a fiddle. He said you carry a violin in a case and a fiddle in a gunnysack. Bob Wills is still the king.
One of the proudest moments in my life was singing on stage with Johnny Gimble at the SPJST Lodge south of Temple, Texas. He sat in with Johnny Lyon and Johnny let me sit in for a song. I sang THE FIREMAN.
I admire this man soo much! I bought a custom-made 5string fiddle last year here in Germany and named it "Johnny" after Johnny Gimble. There is a little branding inside the body showing "Johnny" as the instrument's name too. (Pics here: facebook.com/georg.bahr.5/photos_all ) Got to learn that piece asap! Also wann Fiddle Around like this soon! George
At 2:37 Johnny plays a D augmented chord, ascending & descending in double stops. Amazingly good intonation. It's a very difficult lick to play in tune! Try it. The descending part seems more difficult. There is a transcription in this book: Bluegrass Fiddle Styles by Stacy Phillips & Kenny Kosek. Oak Publications. 1978.
I'm listening to Gimble ALL day today. We'll miss you friend. Condolences to the Gimble family
R.I.P. Johnny Gimble.
my favorite fiddler, hands down!!

A good ol' boy.
Yep!
R.I.P.
Brent Masons biggest early influence.
Difference between a violin & a fiddle is, a violin player gets PAID
I notice that he fingers like a violinist rather than a fiddler with his thumb underneath the neck instead of cradling the instrument in the palm.
The difference between a violin and a fiddle. A violin has strings. A fiddle has strangs.
Did he write this tune?
