The Bass Pro Shop Pyramid is sooo TOTALLY COOL. The organization it is dedicated to, Ducks Unlimited, is one VERY DEAR to my heart. My boyfriend of 22 yrs died 2 n a quarter years ago at age 63 yrs old, n his proudest achievement in life was being a founding member of Ducks Unlimited in Ohio saving the marshes for the ducks preservation!!! He would have been in "Hog Heaven" to have gone to Memphis to the Bass Pro Shop Pyramid, spent the night in the cool cabin hotel, drank at the bar at the top of the lookout tower, n shopped till he dropped,!!!! I Wish we knew about that before he died!!!! Thank you for taking me there this Memorial Weekend Carpetbagger!!! AWESOME series you are doing right now!!! Glad to see Jenny Penny back on UTube this week as well!!!
It is sad but many disasters happen either at the same time or just don't get the attention they deserve. Glad to see a museum that hasn't forgotten about the Sultana.
SS Eastland in Chicago, happened 3 years after the Titanic went down and killed more people, mostly women and children. But until I started watching Ask A Mortician I hadn't heard about it.
@@silverghostcat1924 Same. I watched the same video of hers. It also depends if the disaster happened in war time too.
@@slytheringingerwitch I find it equally sad that so many died right by the dock, unlike the Titanic that was out to sea.
@@silverghostcat1924 I first heard about it through Fascinating Horror and Brick Immortar. Along with Plainly Difficult, they're where I get my historical disaster fix.
I remember being at Mud Island in the 90's and it being absolutely packed. Families everywhere having fun. Mud Island Amphitheater filling for a concert at dusk. Now it looks like the rest of Memphis, broken and abandoned.
That white pavilion used to be covered and housed the B-17 Flying Fortress, Memphis Belle. The city took such poor care of her that she was falling apart and most of the interior parts were stolen. the USAF took her back and restored her and she's on display at the National Air Force Museum in Dayton, OH. That's Memphis in a nutshell. No care, no upkeep. So many of the people living there just don't care about their home.
Yeah I've got some pretty fond memories of Mud Island back in the day. Saw a good concert there circa 2001. I remember the monorail. Also remember the Memphis Belle under that canopy.
Most of the damage to the Belle was when it was a gate guardian at the National Guard Armory near the fairgrounds. It was later a restaurant decoration near the airport, Mud Island actually did some restoration work on the Belle and it's display was adequate when I last saw it there around 30 years ago.
My Mom worked for the Commercial Appeal newspaper in Memphis. I was impressed with Mud Island when I visited it and the Museum was unique. There were very good concerts at the ampitheatre there, I saw John Denver perform there in 1986. I think the German made monorail never worked properly and the design of the architecture was once described as a WW2 Bunker aesthetic. Overall, it lacked charm and synergy. I remember watching "The Firm" and thinking that if Mud Island ever had THAT MUCH pedestrian traffic, it would have been a dynamic success. I remember Johnny Carson made fun of guest who came on and announced concert dates on Mud Island. In the CZcams era, if it is refurbished, maybe it will get a second chance.
That’s the monorail from the movie The Firm
The Memphis pyramid is the 2nd largest pyramid in the country, behind the Luxor hotel in Las Vegas.
I drove by it on the way back from seeing the eclipse in Arkansas.
Mud Island was pretty eerie with no other humans in sight! 😱
"I think that's the "sturgeon general"!!! GREAT ONE, Carpetbagger!!!
I was there for the grand opening of Mud Island Park- huge crowds and lots of fun! So sad to see it abandoned!
The pavilion on Mud Island is where the Memphis Belle was .It's now at the National Museum of the United States Air Force
We saw the Belle there and will see it in Dayton soon!
Jacob got a shout out from the duck master 👏
Mud island was the same when I went to it a few years ago. It’s just abandoned and ignored! Now I remember a MEMPHIS sign on the south end of the island. Used the pedestrian walk way to get there and I didn’t feel unsettled like I SHOULDNT be there.
I’m always happy when small museums can remain open.
Jacob The Carpetbaggers videos are so entertaining thank you you're awesome😅
A somewhat private experience makes for a unique and memorable experience.
The flags are honoring soldiers who passed away in service.
We honor those who did serve on Veteran's Day.
We honor those who do serve on Armed Forces Day.
Wow, so many disasters go unnoticed and unheard of. Nice to see a museum that remembers these events as a memorium.
When we were kids there was an airfield there on Mud island. The monorail (and most of the activities at the park) were really something worth seeing in its day. There were concerts by some famous artists and even a coffee shop. Millions of dollars have been spent for renovation but it’s probably not ever going to be what it once was.
I don't comment every day, but I've been LOVING this road trip! I love starting my day watching your videos while I eat breakfast (I slept CRAZY late today, lol). I enjoy most of your content, but your road trips really are my favorite videos!
Same! This has been a fun trip
@@mollysmith1226 Sure has! Maybe Jacob could do some other themed excursions? How about the St. Lawrence Seaway Trail? And tours of the more-or-less parallel roads that accompany the Lewis and Clark excursion and/or the Appalachian Trail? Any others? (I wouldn't have any objection to Rte. 66 done in fair weather time.)

I am so LOVING THIS TRIP!!!
The ducks marching on the red carpet was amazing!! 🥲 🥰 The duck master was great.
The best series you have done on this channel 👏 🙌 Thank you Jacob!!!
It was so satisfying seeing you with hushpuppies. That is a southern treat to indulge
So tragic with that 1865 steamboat overloaded and all the fatalities. RIP to all. Loved the ducks.
Imagine making it through the entire civil war alive only to die in a ship wreak on your way home. So tragic.
Great video, Carpetbagger!!
Love riding shotgun with you!!❤
Happy trails...😁
Memphian here. I did my internship at Mud Island in it's heyday. Where the Gulf of Mexico is used to be a huge swimming pool, the building was a Pizza Hut, and the land where the Memphis sign is (the end of the island) was grassy area with a couple of sand volleyball courts. We had a summer volleyball league and Sunset parties at the pool with a Hugh stage setup where bands would play on Wednesday nights. We even had on July 4th, Marc Cohn come and play. There was also a Mud Island Amphitheater that had all kinds of concerts (Darryl Hall and John Oates, Joe Walsh, Jimmy Buffet, etc). I think they are trying to repair Mud Island and bring it back. At the opposite end of the island, there used to be the Memphis Belle housed there and was the biggest draw to the Island.
8:59 ITS ME!!!!!!
I learned something new today, never knew about the Sultana. Thank you Jacob. I wonder if they ever made a movie out of this story.
This has so far been a really fun road trip. Hard to say which stop has been my favorite. As of today I'm going to say this one. Loved the Sultana museum, and in Memphis; the pyramid, the riverboat trip, the Peabody Hotel with the cute duck ceremony. Wow! Tons of fun today. Safe travels, Jacob. Catch you tomorrow.
The duck loving baby sold me ❤
Seems the river museum is only open Thursday-Sunday. And your suspicion is correct. Those paddle wheels don’t propel the boat, they are propeller driven. The paddles just drag in the water and turn from that.
Hi Jacob ✌️ I want to thank you for making me a little bit smarter everyday ❤ ABSOLUTELY LOVE your videos.🦆🦆🦆🦆
WHY big networks like Discovery and Travel channels aren't calling Jacob constantly to offer him a plum job, I'll never know. But, we fans couldn't enjoy Jacob more the way things are now, so it's all good.
The looks like the Mississippi River to me ??? Yes ?? I ❤ the Memphis sign ❤
I remember a movie that had the Sultana disaster as a major plot point, but I can't remember the movie. Mud Island was a little on the eerie side, and I loved the Peabody ducks, and the fact that it began as a drunken escapade by the hotels owner makes it all the better. Also, I think that was the sturgeon general.😂😂😂
At the end of the year, I hope you do a crushed penny roundup. Lovin’ this series!
❤that would be awesome
Mud island was pretty cool, looks like a good place for zombies 😳
Or ghosts. Jacob, please keep tabs on the place and visit again after they complete the renovation!
What a nice trip you are doing this week. I really enjoy it 😊
How unique about the duck procession, very cute!
I've wanted to see The Peabody and the ducks since Leona Helmsley owned the place.
Finally got to see it with you. Thank you!
Love the river road adventure videos Jacob ❤
Good Afternoon Jacob 🙋🏽.
Seem like the Duck Master knew Carpetbagger! Niiiiice...
You go Jacob with that beautiful sophisticated drink! Yum
Good Morning! This series is so amazing - Love every bit of it.
Jacob is in my city and I'm just chilling at home?
This was really interesting. The procession of the Ducks was cute. Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
You find the most interesting places! That abandoned Mud Island was very cool!
You rarely do it, but it was nice to see you take a break and relax with a drink! Another great video, my friend!
We kick back right alongside him! It astounds me how similar Jacob is to Mr. Rogers. Jacob treats us as if we are right there with him, he teaches us new things, and he has a similar, calm and gentle demeanor.
got to say. you nailed this trip...so nice to see all these places..and educational..
Catfish in the Pyramid, good eating Carpet
Very cool video, Jacob. Looks like a great place to visit. Till the next one safe travels my friend and take care.
I'm loving this trip!! I never thought of following the Miss from the start and to the finish!! Brilliant !!!!
According to what I found on the Internet, Mud Island Park is currently undergoing renovation.
That's great!
Morning Jacob 🤓📸✌️ happy Saturday and memorial weekend. i like the green Crocs clogs u wearing my favorite color is green. 👍
Green goes nicely with orange. Today Jacob looks like an adorable upside-down pumpkin.
How cool to hear you get call on by the Peabody Duck Master
Lots of great shots of Mud Island in the Tom Cruise movie The Firm
Great vlog!
I am familiar with the Sultana Disaster. In the course of my mother doing genealogy on my Dad's side of the family we discovered that a relative had been a POW in the South and perished on the Sultana. We learned this years after I'd gotten married, and it was shocking that the wedding date I had picked is also the anniversary of the Sultana's tragic demise.
So sad to see the Mud Island attraction empty. Looks like a nice place to hang outside and have a picnic.
IKR? The relief map of the river was fascinating and educational.
We actually have "Camp Out" nights on the Island where people can bring a tent, etc. and camp out and see the Memphis Skyline!!
Mud Island was built in the early 80's and was still open and used up until around 2020. Since then it's been closed/abandoned due to operating costs mostly. We rode the monorail over back in 2016 or so and went through the museum and it was old but still cool.
I used to go there back in the 80's and 90's and saw several concerts there including James Taylor and Midnight Oil.
I used to go to concerts at the Pyramid as a kid in the 90s. Unsurprisingly, the sound was _terrible_ inside that building. Big hollow pyramids made of glass aren't great for acoustics. Lol The concerts at Mud Island were great though. They had the river and the city skyline as a backdrop behind the stage. ..and riding the monorail afterwards with a bunch of drunk, tripping, and stoned people was always hilarious.
This is actually my first time seeing the inside since Bass Pro took over, so thanks for the video! I left Memphis and moved to rural Hawaii back in 2010.
I saw Metallica there back in the 90's and at one point the guitars caused resonance which shook the lighting rig and the building itself.
When our Memphis Tigers played there (the Penny Hardaway era), we loved the Pyramid bc of the massive sound, we called it "The Tomb of Doom"!!!
@@xtravert2012 Damn. Penny Hardaway! I haven’t heard that name in years. Major nostalgia.
Jacob you find the most interesting places!
Nice Calves buddy
So glad you made it out of Memphis alive,,,,,
The Sultana Museum said they were preparing to move? Maybe the closed bigger Museum is constructing the Sultana replica and preparing to be the new place? Maybe?🤷♀️ Thanks my travel buddy!! I’m with you every day on that trip!! Be Safe❤🫂🥰
A new replica of the Sultana that people can actually "go aboard?" As for me, no thanks. I'd look at it, but standing on it would give me the mega-willies. What's your opinion, everyone else?
Beautiful hotel I stayed there years ago and loved the ducks!
That's crazy I've never heard of that disaster. How sad. : ( I gotta look into the Sultana more. Loved the Gaston reference, by the way. Lol That Bass Pro Shop is crazy huge.
I never heard of the saltana
Enjoying this road trip a lot. Thanks for sharing.
Be safe
Jacob...you taught me something new today. I had not heard of this disaster. Compared to the Eastland and Titanic it was really bad.
I toured that museum 30 years ago... rode the monorail... not much busier even then. The Pyramid was a basketball arena and music venue. No vertical elevator then.
29:25 It used to be covered and the plane Memphis Bell used to be there, but the owners discied to take it away from the city because they were not tacking care of it.
Tennessee is my next state to go try food, thank u for this video
Come for the BBQ (but DO NOT go to Rendezvous, not good BBQ) but ask a local which BBQ place to go to!! Stay for the Blues
Good morning Jacob
You woke up to a temporal time slip. You are now the last man on earth 😮
34:25 It feels so much like I'm really there!
i used to take the monorail over to see the memphis bell B-17 in the late 90s fond memories
The ducks at the legendary Peabody Hotel are ab fab!!! How cool they are, living in their Penthouse n fountain!!!
I have seen SOOO many concerts at The New Daisy. 🖤
The museum is currently being renovated into a digital interactive experience. And there is apparently a plan to reopen the old amphitheatre that is on Mud Island.
I don't know if you're into backrooms and liminal spaces, but the abandoned museum hits the right spot in me and give me the creeps. Very brave that you did this 😅
Very good day in Memphis !
Nice museum - history !
Hope to get there one day ! Jacob !
Love the video Jacob, I went to a concert at the Ampitheatre on mud island in 1988 ( with the UK Elvis fan club) and rode the monorail. Also went on one of the steamboats.
Hey Jacob, you should do a little video at the end of this year. Showing off all your smashed Pennie’s from 2024?!? I think that’s a great idea!… anyway,
Love you so much Jacob, as a person who struggles with depression and mental health problems. Your videos always genuinely brighten my day. You’re such an inspiring gentleman Jacob! Thank you for your work with children in the past. It is such important work thanks for helping our children in need❤️🇺🇸. And thank you sincerely for your dedication to making regular quality content these days. I think your current line of work helps people too, and entertains so many to boot! You’re the best Jacob!!! ❤🙏😉 sincerely-Justin, fan for life!
think i started watching your channel around the time your Billy bass was donated.
Love this video carpetbagger and did you know that people in the uk watch your videos as well as the USA.
I'm watching all the way from the other side of the globe! Love Jacob's videos.
Yay, he’s world renowned now!😊
@@tomboyraider1015. Thank you, it’s awesome for him to be seen globally!
Jacob brings people together! It's a wonderful thing.
Fun video, Jacob! Got to get myself to Memphis now.
I’m from Mississippi I love going to Memphis I usually go to Memphis if I have a heart doctors appointment 😊
I want to experience that Bass Pro Shop!! It's really incredible. Thank you for another wonderful video. I know I keep saying this, but I'm really enjoying this road trip, it's packed with information and fun!!
I really enjoyed this video. My favorite part was at the Peabody Hotel with the ducks. I loved it! I can't travel anymore because of health problems but it was always my fave thing to do. Thanks Jacob for going to all these great places and letting us go along.
The Shafer Queen "the paddle boat at indiana beach" is really paddle driven
😭 I cant believe mud island is so abandoned now !!!! Last i had been was in maybe 2012 and the sky lift still operated as a gondola to get onto the island, albeit being obviously old and a little scary.
So sad to see it so creepy and underused. It was cool at the time !
I saw a video about the Sultana Disaster and it just breaks my heart that many disasters happen at the same time or just don’t get the attention that they truly deserve. Glad to see that a museum is built for the relatives, visitors, and locals alike. My mom went to Memphis last year with her sweepstakes group. I want to see the ducks at the Peabody Hotel.
This was fun. Thank you
Kudos to your CZcams Channel, Jacob! 👍👍👍👍 I have relatives who live in Memphis.
Jacob, you need to have a carpetbagger t-shirt to promote your channel ❤️
Oh, he has oodles of them! A bunch of different designs in his store.
the Pavilion used to house the Memphis Belle, till it was moved to Airforce Air Museum that you've been to.
Bass Pro store was amazing! WOW! Thanks for showing it.
FYI, there is a Great American Duck Race in Deming New Mexico every year. Usually late August. It may be fun to check out sometime.
What kinda ducks? I'm guessing domestic ones. Runner ducks would be perfect.
@@maryblaufuss7533 I haven't been in probably 40 years. But we took some runner ducks to race. There were all breeds of ducks there though if I remember correctly. And ones that did way better than ours.
@@loravaloo55 Ah, poop. Too bad! I worked with runner ducks when I worked at the bird show at Grant's Farm (animal park) in St. Louis. They're so cute!
Great blog
You should visit A Schwab on Beal Street. It is a unique store.
