Maybe it's an age thing, because I'm a gen -X, but I was told in my high school Fashion Arts class that a-line means those swinging 60s dresses. The "A" starts at the shoulders/chest. The other style is fit-and-flare, not a-line.

    • @riverAmazonNZ
      @riverAmazonNZ Před 2 měsíci +57

I agree, and half those fit-and-flare dresses don’t even have a-line skirts. A-line isn’t as ruffled as that, it has a flatter surface.
The A refers to the angle of the side seams.

I feel like the fish motif is a continuation of the tomato girl/mediterranean summer thing we've been seeing for a while. It also follows the trend of tinned fish that started a couple years ago with brands like fish wife making us pay more attention to the packaging design for fish products (just look at the very popular Staud sardine bag). I find it interesting that both this fish trend and the classic new england preppy lobster look have their roots in working class communities of sailors/fishmongers/etc yet focus much more on the glamor of consumption or, in this case, the ability to travel to leisurely mediterranean locations like Italy

To me, A-line is a description that can apply to multiple things. For example, the 60s dresses you showed are Trapeze dresses, which have an A-line from shoulder to hem. The fitted bodice dresses have skirts with an A-line, from waist to hem.

A-line dress for me is when the whole dress has the a-line shape. The dresses that flare out at the skirt i would say has an a-line skirt as opposed to the overall silhouette being a-line

i really appreciate you saying that you're not going to buy certain trends, just admire them from afar. it's so easy to get suckered into a trend because it looks cool but regardless of whether you'll actually wear it. mandy lee said recently "i think you can love clothes without constantly having to buy them" and she's right!!!
also in re: fish motifs - i'm a fashion brand company stan and they have a whole bunch of fish print pieces right now! granted, the fishes are like. anglerfish and piranhas. but still a fun interpretation of a fish print!

The attitude you're talking about at 1:36 is SO common, and yes it holds us back from what makes us happy! It's why I love NYC for style; there is literally always going to be a crazier person than you in the city -- whether on fashion or really anything else. It's freeing to embrace things outside of the norm!
Also I personally would probably not even realize you had a double bag! I'd think they came together as a set and would be wondering where to get one for myself. ❤
Also interesting hearing about subtle barrel jeans from you! I kind of feel like they started in full force a year ago for me. I love them so much and they're a great wide leg alternative.

I’m pretty sure A-line in garment making is just to describe the shape of “smaller at the top that goes straight down to wider at the bottom” i.e the shape of the letter “A”. So the dress you associate with A-line has an A-line skirt, as it’s smaller at the waist and flares out/down. These mod dresses are A-line but they start at the shoulder and flare up/down. I would also describe things like baby-doll sleeping gowns as A-line or even a pair of pants as, “having an A-line shape”

I have been on my own style journey with lots of DIY! I have been learning to sew, embroider, and crochet to make clothes my own as well as making my own dangle gauges! Love customized/personalized clothes! Also if you want to make one of those head pieces i recommend getting a skein of yarn you like crochet a basic chain that hugs your head enough to stay in place (should not feel tight) and then you do a double crochet mesh stitch! It's super simple and would be an easy quick project for a beginner.

From what I understand, A line is about the silhouette of the dress or skirt. Its not really ruffled, but the important thing is that it creates that triangular shape. In the case of the 60s dress, they dont have waistlines and the entire dress creates the shape. In newer interpretations, it refers to the shape of the skirt. Its sharper, less drapey, and expands outward from a narrow top

YES ppl should take credit for their puns !! I personally am a fan of puns. Recently I was noticing that it’s almost like a phrase to prompt a laugh / draw attention to the pun, but a lot of the time with the delivery, I am like you scripted this pun 😂 what do you mean “not intended” besides puns are THE best

I personally consider A-line as something with a fairly straight-ish line downwards from either the shoulders or waist, and the bottom is obviously the biggest part (hence "A"). It could refer to an entire dress or maybe just a skirt. So like, in my head, it would exclude something like a mermaid or trumpet dress because the flair is too low, a body-con dress because it doesn't flair at all, or those 80s clothes with the enormous shoulder-pads because the "A" would be upside-down
So in short, I personally think the 60's mod dress as A-line qualification would vary by how flared the bottom is compared to the rest of the dress

A line dress/skirt is simply anything in the shape of a classic letter "A" (the one with a bit of a horizontal line at the top), so it flares out, but not as much as a circle skirt does. The ones you shared are A line too, but they can also be called "fit and flare" dresses (and some are a bit too full for A line). So A line is basically describing a garment in the shape of a capital A (as opposed to a tube dress/skirt, circle skirt, mermaid...) and it doesn't get it's fullness from gathering fabric at the waist or under the bust (like regency dresses), but relies more on tailoring the fabric with multiple (at least two) A shaped pieces, to get the flare at the bottom and be more fitted at the top. If it's a dress it can be a babydoll style or have a fitted bodice and then start to be A shaped under the bust 😉. So it's pretty broad term.

Honestly, I like the idea of a subtle barrel leg jean/pant, but they never look right on my body. I'm short and pear shaped, I hate the way I look in anything barrel leg, even if it's very subtle. It extentuates my already wide hips and it makes me look generally wider, shorter and more shapeless. I've tried multiple times and it's absolutely not for me.
It's a great look on other people, though! I'm sure you could rock this style!
