Henryk Górecki - Op.38 Beatus Vir (1979) (w/lyrics, full score, analysis)

Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933-2010) was a Polish composer of contemporary music. He is most famous for his third symphony, but his oeuvres stretch from piano miniatures to gigantic choral works. His earlier compositions are in serialist style, while his later ones are in a minimalist style.
I was thinking of stopping making Górecki score videos, simply because I got tired of him, but after a listen of this, I decided otherwise...so here it is
This is one of the biggest pieces from Górecki, and it was commissioned by Cardinal Karol Wojtyła (who later became Pope John Paul II), to commemorate the 900th anniversary of the death of St.Stanisław (which represented the discord between the government and the church). It was initially planned as part of a collection called Sancti tui Domine florebunt sicut lilium, but this was the only piece ever composed for it. Górecki spent a very long time selecting the text fit for the purpose, but he eventually settled on various texts from the Psalms (142(143), 30(31), 37(38), 66(67), 33(34)).
Górecki was a rector in the Katowice conservatory, and his fellow professors, as well as the government, were critical of Górecki for accepting the commission from the Cardinal. The government especially pressured Górecki, banning his name from being mentioned on any kind of music-related festivals, etc. Górecki resigned from his post in protest, but this proved to be fortunate in part, as he could focus on this piece, to complete it in time for the pilgrimage of the Pope John Paul II. It was performed in Kraków with the composer conducting Kraków Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, with Jerzy Mechliński as the solo baritone. The Pope praised this piece after listening to it, while criticizing the communist party.
It is scored for solo baritone, chorus, Flute 4, Oboe 4, Clarinet 4, Bassoon 4, Horn 4, Trumpet 4, Trombone 4, Tuba 4, Percussions, Harp 2, Piano 4 hands, and Strings.

3:46 The "Domine" stops here, and transitions to the next section. (4:46) This section mainly consists of Baritone. (7:55) Chorus appears, and it gives the melody back and forth with the Baritone. (9:45) is one of my favorite moments in this piece.
10:48 In the next section, the music gains more and more momentum.
14:55 This is the start of the climax of the piece.
17:39 The long climax concludes with the bells and flourish.
18:30 However, this is about the death of St.Stanisław. The music returns to the beginning mood, of a depressed tone.
23:12 The next section is still in a quiet and suppressed tone.
24:33 In the following section, the orchestra is out of the scene, and the chorus creates a placid tone.
26:14 After orchestral intrelude, the chorus comes back with the final stanza, with a placid tone.
27:14 Orchestral postlude Part 1: This is restatement of the previous choral section.
28:52 The conclusion of this piece consists of bells, but this time in a very dark mood. The music slowly fades away to darkness, and the piece concludes.
