  • I hereby dedicate this score video to days when I can't think of any musical ideas. I thought I was familiar with music with lots of repetition, but this is too much for me...Anyway!
Henryk Mikołaj Górecki (1933-2010) was a Polish composer of contemporary music. He is most famous for his third symphony, but his oeuvres stretch from piano miniatures to gigantic choral works. His earlier compositions are in serialist style, while his later ones are in a minimalist style.
Op.40 Koncert na klawesyn - lub fortepian - e orkiestrę smyczkową [Concerto for Harpsichord - or Piano - and String Orchestra] (1980)
This was commissioned by Polish Radio and Television, and was dedicated to Elżbieta Chojnacka, who premiered the work in 2 March 1980 at Katowice with Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Orchestra differs by whether the soloist plays harpsichord or piano - Harpsichord has 6/6/4/4/2 strings, while piano has 8/8/6/6/4 strings.
0:00 Mov.1 Allegro Molto - the intro sounds like Bach, doesn't it? Well, this theme is repeated for some times, before we see some kind of a variation at 0:39.
0:46 the "variation" takes over, but the original progression soon returns.
1:47 A totally new section, with tritones on the solo.
2:12 we see some variation, as the soloist continues chromatic descending progression, while the main theme is shifted to the orchestra.
    3:01 Initial melody returns again
    3:59 and again, but cropped.
4:11 the movement concludes in D maj
4:24 Mov.2 Vivace - A new theme is stated between solo and orchestra
    4:41 some variation is made
    5:23 another variation
    5:49 yet another
6:20 A new section starts here, with chromaticism, dissonance, and glissandos
7:19 The soloist joins on the repeated notes from the orchestra.
8:04 Gorecki lost me in this movement, especially here. Is it really necessary for everyone to play the same note for 20 bars...?
8:20 The piece concludes with the beginning progression.
    Performed by Mahan Esfahani

this is an adequate minimalist piece. knows its limits (8 minutes is perfect for it), pulsating throughout, with enough variation to keep one interested.

The strings for piano version are 16/14/12/10/8. Anyway, great video!
