The man who was shot in the head while laying in the field talking to Lipton was Warrant Officer Andrew Hill, he came upon the battle while searching for the headquarters of the 506th PIR.
Also, the German POW that was born in the US, when his parents went back to Germany, they weren't at war with the US yet. So he may have thought he wasn't going to have to fight them. That's a possibility.

I read a war memoir of a Canadian German who's folks sent him to Germany during the Depression--he was a bit of indentured servant so when the time came to join the military, he did. He ended up as a gunner for Panzer Mk IV (and the self propelled gun version as well) on the Eastern Front..

the clickers depicted were a clever way to signal to eachother in the dark, but they werent widely issued. They had been a last minute buy from a toy company, and there wasnt enough time to make enough for everyone, so only a few units got them. Most units relied on the challenge call 'flash', which the other unit would answer 'thunder'. This combination of words was chosen because there are no words in german that start with the 'Th' sound like in english, words starting with 'Th' in german have a hard T sound, so even if the germans learned the proper response call from prisoners they would still not fool american troops because when they answered the challenge call they would say 'toonder' instead of 'thunder'.

Most people today don't realize what explosive shells do. You can't see it, but when they explode thousands of metal chunks and splinters are flying away from the explosion - be it flack for air, a tank round, a mortar, hand grenade, or big guns like German 88's. They aren't bullets. This is what was flying into the airplanes in the opening scene. Big artillery shells can send metal flying for a hundred yards or more.

Those were NOT airstrikes, Remember in 1942, there were NO JETS, those sounds are replecations of Naval artillery from American and British Battleships offshore shelling enemy positions on the land, , either 14, 15 or 16 inch shells from the big guns.

Jets engine did exist at this time, but they were very primitive. The Me 262 was the first jet fighter used in combat by the Germans in late ‘44. Also, air strikes were definitely a thing. One of the reasons D-Day and the France campaign in general was so successful was because the Allies had complete air superiority against the Germans because the Luftwaffe (German Air Force) was almost completely destroyed at this point in the war. The remainder of the Luftwaffe was concentrated on the Eastern front against the Soviets.

Gravestones in perfect symmetry and the grounds were immaculate and though I didn't know anyone there or any direct connection, I cried my eyes out to the people that sacrificed everything for our Country. The American in the German uniform was not uncommon. If you do a deep dive pre war, you'll find many many Americans were on hitless side. New Jersey had a massive Hitler youth type camp. American nazis marches and held open meetings. The pro socialist movement was strong. Once Hitler invaded Russia their support dropped though. And once America joined thy war, the government was serious about hunting nazi supporters down. They then spent years scrubbing to the best of their ability any film or articles about the nazi movement in the US.
You can find it still though.
The support among the US government was so broad spread that American diplomats were expelled from England because they were still taking the side of Hitler ant Germany while bombs were falling on London.
Like I said though, one Germany invaded Russia that support dissipated fast.

People forget Hitler was Time's Man of the Year and Hollywood waxed poetically about National Socialism. Joe Kennedy Sr. was pro-Hitler and it cost him his ambassadorship to England and killed his political career. Joe Jr was suppose to be the one to run for President until he died on a mission. JFK ended up being the Kennedy that ran.

The scene at the end in the back of the truck was well done. It was the Lt bonding with the men and they saw him in a different light. This was was especially true of "Wild Bill" who had his doubts about Winters. The fact that the Lt could stop in, check on everyone have a drink, bust a couple balls and then leave was leadership at it's most basic. He didn't hang around for long but his appearance and the way he interacted with them showed what a leader he was.

But time has moved on we are a long way from the 1940's. That said, we who are living in 2024 owe ALL the men you see in this series and the 11 million other American men who fought, sacrificed and died in this war our everlasting gratitude and respect. Black, White, male, female, gay, straight, whatever, we ALL have what we have, we ALL are what we are, we ALL may yet become what ever we may we become because of what these men shown here did so long ago. My understanding of the clicker is that they were adapted because the assault would be conducted by different nations working together. as a result, they could not use the same code words necessarily so then used the clicker so that the different soldiers of different nations can know that you are an ally instead of the Germans.

  • @obydude
    @obydude Před 3 měsíci +1

They later found out that the clicker was a bad idea. The signal was one click to go out, (clickclick) and in response, you'd get two clicks back,(clickclick-clickclick). The problem was, that the germans used a bolt acton rifle, the K98 Mouser. So when a US soldier sent out a click, the german would chamber a round which made a clickclick-clickclick sound. So the US soldier would take that as the all clear, and come out of cover thinking it was a clicker.

Great reaction, guys! The little bit at the end about Winter's attack on the guns still being taught today should give you a little indication of what a legend Winters would become. But all these guys were amazing. Easy Company were total badasses.

When they come up on the dead paratrooper hanging from a tree and they're scavenging for ammo and supplies, the subtitles say "planes soaring" but that whooshing sound we hear are 2700lb shells fired from US battleships arcing overhead.
In the trenches, Buck Compton keeps messing with his Tommy gun. He lost his own weapon during the jump and found another one elsewhere, but didn't test fire it before going on the attack, and he's unaware that the firing pin is broken. That's why he keeps trying to clear/cycle it and taking the mag in and out.
At the end, Nixon says that he had the maps sent to division, but in reality, Nixon understood the critical importance of these maps and ran them himself several miles back to Utah beach, where command had established some manner of HQ. The higher-ups there were so pleased with this vital piece of intelligence that they, as a manner of thank you, sent the first 2 tanks off of Utah beach to reinforce the 101st. Those are the 2 tanks you see Nixon riding back in town on. They were used to flush out the remaining Germans at Brecourt.

First of all: the subtitles for Band of Brothers were probably done by someone who have never had any contact with anything military ever in their life. There are multiple errors and some errors don't make a lick of sense. Just FYI.
(I think this is the subtitles where at the end Winters takes a drink and says "Don't you think, Guarnere?" the subs say "Don't you drink, Guarnere?" Booooh. Bad subs. Many such cases.)
Secondly some trivia: 15:18 "Spike the guns" is an old expression from the advent of gunpowder and firearms. Cannons used to be (and still are, but much more so before) very immobile and difficult to move. So if your company of soldiers overran a battery of enemy cannons you either turned the cannons to fire at the retreating enemy, took them back with you or; as a last resort, were you not able to do any of that and yourself had to retreat from that position - you spiked them.
You know the old-timey cannon where you put a burning stick into a hole to make it go boom?
That's were you drove a nail into to make it unusable, the cannon was spiked.
10/10 reaction, this is good stuff!

I know you guys have already finished watching the series, but I wanted to help add some context for you (if you decide to rewatch on your own), and also for the other viewers. Many commenters talk about how "true" this story is.
It is... but, this series, throughout all of the episodes presents the story with various degrees of accuracy & inaccuracy simultaneously to help tell the story in a way that the viewer can follow better.
When Easy left England for D-day, there were 139 guys making up the company, and the company would shrink with casualties, and then beef back up with replacements throughout the war, so the neighborhood of "120-ish" is pretty much how many guys were in the company at any given time.
Because of this, it would be logistically impossible to depict the experiences of every single guy in a ten episode series. So a lot of stories that happened to Easy company guys we're never introduced to were attributed to a small core of characters that we're going to be following.
For starters, the paratrooper that landed near Winters that night wasn't Hall, but some supply Sgt from F company that Winters recognized right away. Then when he encountered Lipton (with that clicker), Lipton had twelve guys, not just two - although a few of the twelve were indeed stragglers with the 82nd.
An interesting incident that's not depicted at all: when Winters stuck his knife in the ground and went under that poncho to look at the map, one of the group that was with Lipton swiped that knife. Winters was furious about it, but decided that it was neither the time or place to address the theft.
In the night, several other Easy company guys latched on to the group, including Buck, Guarnere, and Malarkey. Winters, Lipton, Buck, and Guarnere had nothing but their knives - as all of their leg-bags had been torn away in the same manner.
At about 3:00AM, they came across the Lieutenant Colonel of another unit, who had about fifty men with him. Winters and his men were headed in the same direction they were going, so they fell in with that group for a little bit. It was with this huge group that the Germans were ambushed. Several of the Lieutenant Colonel's men are the ones who opened fire prematurely, as Guarnere still hadn't obtained a replacement weapon yet. After that, Winters and Guarnere were finally armed - having taken pistols off the dead Germans.
As far as the American in the German uniform they encountered, Malarkey did come across an American who had come to Germany after Hitler's call for "all loyal Germans" to serve the Reich. It was a bit different from what's depicted here though. He was a German Master Sergeant, in the company of about twenty other German POW's. He was from Portland, Oregon, and had worked at Schmitz Steel Company up until 1938. Malarkey worked at Monarch Forge and Machine Works in 1942. The two places were very very near to each other. Due to the year differences, Malarkey had never seen him before, and said he had no idea what happened to him afterwards.
Speirs did execute a group of German POW's, but it likely wasn't that group. If I remember correctly, the Germans that Spiers executed occurred earlier in the night before dawn.
The assault on Brecourt Manor is depicted as taking place in only a few minutes. In reality, the attack took about three hours. During which time Winters had to run back to the assembly area to get after them for not moving fast enough to help them out with fresh ammo and other assistance.
Lastly, the jeep driver Lorraine is depicted as kinda a fifth wheel to the unit. In reality, he was very effective. When they were shooting the fleeing Germans while taking the first gun, Lorraine is depicted as missing the guys while Guarnere takes them out. In real life it was actually the reverse. Guarnere missed the German he was shooting at, and Winters had to shoot him. All the while, the Germans that Lorraine shot went right down.
Later on, a German who was stunned by a grenade came out to surrender. Winters was trying to point him to leave the trench, but he had a hard time understanding. Lorraine slipped on a pair of brass knuckles and belted the guy. Winters didn't care for treating prisoners that way, but it did the trick. The German suddenly understood to leave the trench to go surrender to someone else. The show depicts Joe Toye as using brass knuckles on a German, but he didn't have any during that attack.
Great react guys! Looking forward to watching the rest of the series with y'all.

About the American in the German army: His parents weren't racists, they were *nationalist* and loyal to Germany. There's a clear difference. Race had nothing to do with it.
