  • So when you are offered the keys to any Porsche you like and you choose the hybrid SUV...really ?
    Well yes. I wanted to see just how good this car was to drive as it seemed perfect on paper. Huge practicality, VERY fast and with pretty good economy figures. Surely something doesn't add up ?
    It this video I explore the Cayenne S in terms of performance, drive it on electric power only and wish I had read the briefing pack in the 2 minutes I had before I jumped it the car. The perils of media events that I am rapidly learning !
    A big thank you to Porsche UK for giving me the opportunity to drive this car. It was very impressive.

    THANKYOU PETER FOR AN HONEST AND EXCELLENT REVIEW. BEEN DRIVING CAYENNES PAST 10 YEARS. EVEN SAVED MY WIF'E LIFE RECENTLY IN AN ACCIDENT. THIS IS PORSCHE IN EVOLUTION AND THEIR NEWER MODELS AND TECHNOLOGY WILL CONTINUE TO SHINE THROUGHOUT THE DECADES. I HAVE NOW SWITCHED OVER TO e HYBRID SO AM LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE MILES OF DRIVING PLEASURE ? WITHOUT SOUND.

    Very nice review Peter. Interestingly, I took delivery on this exact same car about a month before your review. And it is pretty much the exact same car, all the way down to the 20 inch Spyder design wheels (although I did go with the sun roof and Adaptive Cruise Control). I had upgraded from the base Cayenne and had absorbed as many reviews as I could find. This one was awesome with great insight and video quality. As you only had the car for a short time, one of the aspects of the e-hybrid that you couldn't have a chance to appreciate is just how fun it is to try to get fuel efficiency out of the car. By fully utilizing the plug-in to fully charge, and using the regenerative braking and coasting to recharge the battery, you can really get great fuel economy. I have a 40 Km commute to work and my most efficient drive was 32 out of 40 Km on battery alone in mostly stop and go traffic. That being said, it is still a Porsche and you've got a lot of power when you need it. This also eliminates any range anxiety that you would have with the Tesla. Much more practical for a long road trip. My only regret was not getting one with the 7.2 Kw onboard charger which can cut the charge time in half which is especially useful when you are charging outside (especially at charging stations that charge by the minute).

      Thanks for the great comment Stephen. Really interesting to hear from an owner and more about the car. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I thought it was a cracking drive. Very impressive. Enjoy your car 👍

      I was able to drive a loaner 2017 Cayenne Platinum Edition for a couple near the end of last year and I was pleasantly surprised how well the SUV drives. I've heard it's a great car, handles well, has power, etc. But my mind still told me that it's not going to be as fun to drive since it's so big. At first, it did feel that way when I drove it, but when putting it into Sports mode, it handles impressively well and has power to spare when traveling around the city or weaving in and out in traffic. I hope I can try out one of the e-hybrid Porsche models as well, hopefully a Panamera!

    Great video Peter, when my older brother had his Porsche Boxster S he was given a Cayenne S as a courtesy car when his needed some attention and he took me out for a spin in it(this was a few years ago), my god it was fast!!!!, amazing to think that Hybrid version is faster than our Mini Cooper Roadster S's and it weighs nearly three times as much!!!!
    Lokking forward to your next vid as always.

    Brilliant review, you convinced me so I bough it, fully loaded with the Burmester stereo, double glass, electrical close doors, all leather packages, all upgrades possible and it was FANTASTIC... the 15 days I got it before it got stolen and was gone for 7 months and then ever since its been at Porsche and awaiting parts that is delayed due to Covid, - might get it next week they say again now 14 months later, for the 17 time, lost fait and almost don't want it anymore, no matter how cool it is, might just downscale for a cheap car that nobody wants to steal (my second Porsche stolen last 4 years).

      Petrol Ped Driving in hybrid mode gives it amazing economy? Your thoughts?

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Před 7 lety

      It does, and in this video I drive it in pure electric mode which you can do for about 30 miles or so. My only comment would be that if you accelerate too hard or want to drive quickly the ICE kicks in. It's great to help improve economy in town driving where you will be on electric power quite a bit. If you are giving it the beans on a nice B road then the hybrid element is more about giving you torque fill and aiding performance. The MPG I got was similar to a diesel.

  • @mattylf1
    @mattylf1 Před 8 lety +3

    Interesting review. Prompting me to visit my local Porsche dealer. Those MPG figures are impressive for such a large car.

    • @PetrolPed
      @PetrolPed  Před 8 lety

      I must admit to not working out my MPG for the test route, but it was only 25 miles. Where I think this vehicle would come into it's own would be urban driving when you can get to use a lot of the electric drive.

    Another excellent video, the way you present reminds me of how Chris Goffey used to on the old Top Gear's which have ever since gone downhill and are only worth watching if you like seeing a car destroyed. You drive it and describe all you need to know as if you've owned the car, not sure if the braking statistic would apply to my dads 356 which has drum brakes all round though!! Looking forward to the next review

      Well said Andrew! I have been watching all these videos from Pete since I subscribed a week ago and have been wondering why I thought Pete was familiar.... and you said it Chris Goffey, from Top Gear, back when it was worth watching. Thanks for solving that for me. :-)

    I love how in England "off-road" is just some specially prepared course that is still concrete and asphalt, maybe they have some gravel in there too?!!?!? oohh! In Canada we have mud, muskeg, sand, dirt, wet grassy fields, etc. People have driveways that look harder than their "off-road" course.

      @@PetrolPed I also got a 2016. However, I probably get about 10 miles to a charge on average. My work is 4.2 miles away, so I can make it back and forth each day....but just. One thing that stands out is it corners unbelievably; this from a guy who autocrossed his 3rd gen RX7. The Cayenne just keeps turning in when I need it. The only complaint is it is dog slow on electric only.

    • @Scoharr
      @Scoharr Před 4 lety

      @@duanekimball In "hybrid" mode, it will use e-power first and only activate the gas engine if you need a burst of power. It will easily revert to electric mode with a gentle foot. Kind of fun to experience. The transition is pretty seamless, too. I'm very impressed.

      Thanks

    • @duanekimball
      @duanekimball Před 4 lety

      @@davidkilpatrick5036 I get 35mpg over long-term distances. But again, I only commute 4.2 miles to work. I would say highway mileage is 21-ish. But you can e-charge and then electric and have fun trying to get that number up. I usually try to get 3-5 miles of charge before exiting on long trips so I'm electric "in-town". I also have a Chevy Volt for my kid. It's way better at 40miles/charge

    Completely different feel to the video, it's all the fashionable thing to do lol but I do as well although my action cam does not do 60fps at 1080 although the dslr does. Off truck racing tomorrow at Silverstone will be my 1st video in a while and going to try and get in front of the camera a lot more as people subscribe to a person they like and then the content and you have a likeable personality so that's why you have nearly 1000 subs and I only have 115. Videos have come on leaps and bounds over the past 3 months let's hope mine do the same, off at 4:30am tomorrow and staying up there for Sunday as well.

      That's sounds like a great weekend. I look forward to seeing the content you produce.
      As far as quality goes, upgrading the settings on all of my cameras to the best quality codec and 60 fps has improved the visual quality hugely. Editing on a Mac has also made a huge difference. The only minor problem is the files sizes are now HUGE ! This video was 2.5 GB !!!

    Hybrids will truly be a decent trade-off to converting ourselves if I could get 70 mph without motor petrol assist and at least 50 miles just in electric.

    If you don't want a hybrid, you better buy in the next few years. Porsche, Ferrari, McLaren all say that any car they make will be hybrid by 2010-2025.
