Thanks Miles. Extra old whisky if done well can offer flavours that you don't get in young whisky and can be really great. We should probably count ourselves lucky to have experienced such things as prices keep going higher and higher.
I’ve had the privilege of tasting the 33 year old official bottling, I completely agree with you. A very special dram but not worth the money. Unless you are very wealthy? Thanks for a great review
Privilege is the right word with these old Broras. We're lucky to have tried them. Not worth taking out a second mortgage to buy a whole bottle though as you say 🙂 Cheers
Don’t be surprised if others lift your bottle drop gag.😳 Congratulations again on your celebratory 100th Review. Keep up the good work. You are an inspiration to us all. Cheers 🥃
Maybe I can offer it on a licenced basis to other WhiskyTubers 🙂 nah, you're welcome to it. But you won't get me if I see you 'drop' your Cairdeas 😉 Thank you for the kind words. Means a lot 🥃🥃
Congrats on the 100 videos, the 1,000 subs and, of course, on having a sample of Brora 35yo on hand to boot! Nice way to celebrate those milestones. I'll never have something like that in my glass, so it's fascinating to hear your descriptions of how it smelt and tasted. By the way, regarding losses due to droppage, I remember Scott from the Scotch Test Dummies buying a Balvenie Tun expression some years ago, and on the day he bought it he arrived home, drove the car into the driveway, got out with the bottle in his hand and dropped it straight onto the concrete. I think that bottle must have cost a few hundred American dollars at the time. It's enough to make a grown man cry. Thank goodness that fate didn't befall you - though you almost had me fooled for a moment. Many thanks for the extended tasting notes plus the extra info on Brora/Clynelish's history. Great stuff. Cheers.
Thanks Russell! Enough to make a grown man cry indeed. I hate even the thought of it. I don't think I've ever dropped a bottle (shouldn't have said that!!) but I did once spill about 1/3 of a pour of Highland Park 30yo. Still haven't forgiven myself for that one. Cheers!
I know enough about the reputation of old Brora to know that would be an amazing dram. You're right in saying we have a very limited time to try to taste certain beverages because once they're gone they're gone for good. We all know the new Brora and Port Ellen wont be anything like the same whisky. Diageo are not going to make distillate the old fashioned way like Bimber do. Neither will they have access to old fashioned casks. It's a different whisky universe anyway. How many people actually drank old fashioned Brora back in the day? Today it's a multi-million pound global concern. £1,000 is crazy for a bottle of whisky but I guess that depends how deep your pocket is. If earned loads of money I might buy a bottle. The question for me is, great though this whisky is how much better is it than other excellent, more affordable, experiences? Is drinking this akin to Woody Allen's Orgasmatron? I stocked up on quite a few whiskies just on the cusp of the whisky boom because I knew I was running out of time to do so. I have a handful of unicorns but it is "only whisky" as our friend John so sensibly reminds us. Not so long ago an 18 year whisky would have been seen as the dog's bollocks but some folk, today, don't even consider that old. This Brora is great because it's a piece of whisky history; a closed distillery and old whisky making, but it's mainly because it's 35 years old. Can you imagine the men filling a barrel of that in the 1970's thinking people would be waiting 35 years before drinking such an antique? What a world we live in. Cheers. WT
Amazing whisky it's true but you're right to question what you're getting from this over all the other great whisky that doesn't cost thousands and thousands. It's a bad case of diminishing returns! As for who was drinking old Brora in the glory days... well I had a look on Whiskyfun and even Serge only has tasting notes from a couple of bottles from before the 1990s, with almost all being bottled this century. I think a lot of people don't realise that there was no legendary status to Brora while it was operational. It was a blend filler and the cult has been created (largely by UD / Diageo) long after the shutdown. So anyone coughing up the cash for Brora now needs to be aware that they're playing into Diageo's marketing game and there's less difference between them and the folks buying JW Blue Label than they think 🙂 Would I buy this if money was no object? Maybe. I guess if you can afford it with no consequences then why not. But I still feel that it's a bit immoral to spend that kind of money on a single bottle. A bottle that fills 15-20 glasses just like any other, provides temporary enjoyment and is gone. I'm happy with my little one off time capsule sample experience. Cheers 🥃
The Bunnahabhain Captain having a giggle ;-) Congrats on the Ton, take the cap off and bow to the members stand. How many Ardbegs could you have bought for that sample ?
⛵🥃😉 Cheers! I actually got the sample a few years ago for a 'good price'. Relatively anyway. Especially seeing as samples of Brora are much harder to find these days. Still it's probably at least 3 bottles of Ardbeg 10 😬
;-) Me too. The potential irony of dropping the glass after pretending to drop the bottle had me clinging on for dear life. Most tense dram of my life!
Stunning stuff! Thanks to an incredibly generous friend I have tried that very bottling and it is my favourite whisky so far. I actually bought the 2007 release 30yo at auction a couple of years ago but the idea is to open it on my 40th birthday later this year and after that it will only come out on subsequent birthdays. It's my way of making me actually look forward to turning 40 haha
That is a friend indeed 😉 I like the idea of having a special bottle like this to bring out for very rare occasions but it is SO much money. Best Regards for your special dram later this year 🙂
That drop scared the shit out of me hahaha. Great review.
Haha it doesn't even bear thinking about... thanks for watching 🥃
I had a Glenfarclas 40 once. Lovely stuff. Congratulations

@@WhiskyLock My thoughts too. It was £45 for 5cl…It’s now £100. Wild
Oh yeah…Great shirt!
Thanks! We should probably all have branded shirts. Although you rock some cool shirts anyway 😎

@@WhiskyLock thank you, good sir. Congrats on the milestone by the way. May there be many more.
well if whiskytube doesn't make you rich, acting could be your fallback! You had me going! hahaha
Haha I'll get practising in case. Cheers 🥃🙂
Nice review.
Thanks Gert 🥃
Nice tshirt 👍🏻😁🍺
Thanks! Got to represent the brand 😉
Please never do that again :)
🤣 I promise I won't. The very thought of it is stressful!
