I’ve watched a lot of your reviews, and never seen you wax quite this poetic about a dram. As a peathead myself, this makes me want to chase this down here in the states.

I remember you liking the Smoky Scot from the Advent calendar. Looks like it is available in Australia but hasn't made it to the NZ market. I have the Port Askaig 100 proof which is reported to be Caol Ila. I also have the Finlaggan Eilean Mor and Finlaggan Cask Strength which may be Caol Ila distillate. Cheers!

I've been meaning to pick this up after the 23 Christmas "showdown" 😂 and I've even had it in the basket a few times but never been able to hit the free shipping limit with the vendors that have it. (which I've found hit and miss) I'll get one as the flavour profile sounds right up my street

2 great value whisky's, there is good stuff out there at a reasonable price, it just takes a bit of looking around, I enjoyed your Christmas advent calendar reviews as things like these pop up.

Good review, Shane! However, it made me realise something. We are all masochists here. Must be. First we overspend on our whisky (prices being what they are these days); then we expose ourselves to scents and flavours like cow stable, maneur, tar, burnt petrol, iodine, bandages… Now I am depressed 😂

"What you see is what you get." This old adage probably sums up this whisky. I've been enjoying my bottle with the occasional dram since you gave it some well deserved praise in the Advent Calendar series of videos. Great to have a 5yo peated dram which shows off the distillate so well and clearly lets the cask play just a secondary role. And the value for money is superb! Cheers.

Its truly good stuff! It has this lean, sharp, focused quality that I really love. I keep comparing it to the smokehead unfiltered that I got recently and my preference for smoky scot just keeps getting larger. How do you feel about that comparison?

Artwork is interesting. They've gone for the white Laphroaig tube but slapped a Kilchoman Islay style map on it.

I'm onto my second bottle of Smoky Scot. Lovely rugged stuff. Curry-proof indeed! $82 Australian (it went up $7, boo hoo), which is still good value. Don't you love that unabashed age statement!

Great callback of the '23 Christmas season 🙂. I've already nearly finished the bottle of the Murray McDavid which I quickly acquired at the time, but the Smoky Scot will probably be popped come autumn.

Have had no luck with this one after 3 bottles over 6 years. Too sharp and a bit boring.

We just got back from this distillery after tasting their whisky. Here is my take as an amateur non whisky enjoyer... Whiff of the edge of an arsehole on the nose. Possibility of red pepper consumption the night before coupled with a slightly inadequate wipe. Definitly a scruncher, not a folder as the bleached paper is profound. The taste. Fire on the inhale and exhale. Fire through the nostrils. Fire thereafter. Taste buds ruined but the taste of an old antique shop run by a paedophile persisted. Now... The New Make they do is *pure* gold. 63.5%, this has not been ruined by letting it rot in old barrels for years just so people can be false officionados about it. Toss in a slug of organic ginger shot and a good lick of Iron Bru. I call it the Scotscow Fuel. Fight your partner after just one 🎉

The last one that fully convinced me was Batch #12. Apart from the fact that the colouring is really a pitty, I encounter a slightly unpleaseant herbal bitterness in #17. Not for a 100% my cup of tea but there is still a third of the bottle left to make friends. I also miss the maritime iodine to some extent. Cheers and keep it up!

I have heard that the Lidls Ben Bracken Speyside is Tamnavulin, it would be interesting to compare the double cask against the Ben Bracken

I have a bottle of the unpeated version of this but haven't opened it yet... have you heard of Dartmoor whisky? They're English too - be interested to hear what you think of them too! Unfortunately no age statement to my knowledge :(

Came here after doing a similar exercise with Bell's, Famous Grouse and Pig's Nose... Guess i'm not at your level yet, because I can't believe you were able to pick up all of that on the nose... :D That said, I thought it was MUCH better than Famous Grouse, seriously. I think it's actually decent!

Excellent review of one of my favorites. I have some very old bottles, 15 may be my most recent. They are all superb - and as you say somewhat different but all unmistakably Laphroaig. I have a 40 year old unopened bottle on the shelf I bought new at CDG. Been drinking the 12 and 15 here at the ranch -

Hi Shane, I'm fairly sure I've seen a Cadenheads bottling of EWC in a local store, but if so it's not listed on their website so I'll have to return and double-check. Whiskybase WB199100. It ̶s̶o̶u̶n̶d̶s̶ reads... intriguing, if not necessarily crowd-pleasing, which is not necessarily a bad thing.🙃

I've managed to thoroughly tire myself of sherry cask strength whisky lately by buying 7 or so of the signatory 100 proof bottles.. . Whenever I go l back to the category I'll put the English whisky company on the top of the list, especially the peated stuff

What an excellent review. You know, you can get most styles of Single malts in the Kosher market today except.....heavily peated Oloroso Sherry cask matured. Yes, Yerushalmi distillery do heavily peated Rum, Kosher Sweet Dessert Wine, Kosher Red Wine, Virgin Oak Single malts and combinations of, and do them all very well. M&H do some great Kosher Ex-Sherry cask matured single malts but....a heavily peated Kosher Ex-Sherry cask release - that I'd love to try. Unfortunately there is nothing like that as yet where you get a smoky, peaty, sweet red fruits and sour dough pastry taste, similar to a wood oven baked rhubarb pie, which can only come from First-Fill Oloroso casks.

Again you make EWC sound so delicious, I'm really going to have to get my hands on a bottle. Will definitely keep an eye out for it next time I cross the channel.

You cut out just as I wanted to see how you put back down the 15 and 16 after first picking them up, as you commented earlier you keep the older in your left to not get confused...but when you lifted the 16 up to compare to the 15 the 15 was already in your RH so you had them the opposite of what you stated you are comfortable doing or you'll mess them up haha. Did you put them back down in the right spot? Great to see these compared, I was already looking forward to the 17 from the full review but you know...from your first taste in this one and the comments immediately after, man I can't wait to try it! In Canada, that means probably being patient for another 3-5 months. boo.
