We are- a family of four,
Mum- Annie,
Dad-Bruce
Two children Elsie and Betsy

and we decided to trade our busy life as home and business owners to chase the dream we’ve harboured for 10years.
How did we get here
After years of saying one day, we finally realised that these opportunities don’t just land in your lap and if we seriously wanted to make a difference to the Earth then we were going to have to stop talking about it and do it!
We sold all our stuff, got rid of the mortgage, sold our camper conversion business and landed in a dream come true. After traveling in our van we settled here in the west of Ireland. A place that has always been special to us. Annie is half Irish and since we met 13 years ago and she took me to meet her family i fell in love with Ireland too.
Now we’ve made this dream a reality there is no stopping us! our plan is to work hard, meet new people and learn new skills that will guide us on our journey of permaculture and creating a way of life that sings to us. One where we aren’t bound to the banks, working every hour and outsourcing all of our needs. A simple way of life, with connection to ourselves, each other, the earth and our community.

Bats are really useful animals to have around; the little ones eat vast amounts of insects like mosquitos. OK, so you don't want them nesting in your yurt - there's probably some local organization that can advise you on exactly the right type of bat house to build for the bats in your particular area.
Our friend came over and looked at the footage. She works in conservation in our area and has given us some great advice. I love having them around but defo don’t want them messing up the yurt
Hi Bruce and Family, to gain some extra heat from the stove put a solid block wall in a semi circle behind the stove ( 9ins solid on their side no mortar) about 1meter high. This will direct the heat from the side of the yurt and act as a heat sink which will continue to radiate heat after the stove has gone out much like a storage heater. Love following your journey. Hey Joe that’s a good idea. So far it’s pretty toasty without much fuel burnt. It’s going to be interesting to see how winter is in the yurt
I'd say the bats are good luck -- a great sign for the biodiversity and health of your land. (Though not the moment you find them of course. Putting your hand in to find an unexpected critter is always a squidgy moment.) Bats are in trouble all over the place, but they're cooler and cooler the more you learn about them. Nice that you don't seem to have the rabies concern there that we have in Canada. I'd still reco contacting your friend though. The bats might return to the same spot come nightfall. So you may want to install a bat house to encourage them to roost elsewhere. Merlin Tuttle Bat Conservation is a great resource for plans and guidance. Beautiful pumpkins Elsie! Our friend came over and said it’s not mating season so we can exclude them after sunset over the course of a few days. I know I have them in the shed and I don’t mind them there but hoping I can get them to move out of the yurt
@@OffGridBruce Nice! So great to have wildlife-savvy friends to call. Living alongside wildlife definitely includes boundary negotiations. "Not in the yurt" seems most reasonable. Our local bats -- "Bruce" and "Wayne" -- have always been good enough to roost on the outside of the building (log home). We'd have to have a serious talk with them if that ever changed.
Love this video! Elsie you’re amazing! I’ve recently learned how to crochet pumpkins and they’re tricky! So hope you sell lots! And Annie we totally relate to your decision making dilemmas!

The heavier that a woodstove is, the more thermal mass it has to hold heat.
It’s a blessing in disguise as I think we would have cooked with that stove in the yurt

Great that she wants to learn to spin! As a fellow wool spinner, I suggest to try with a spindle instead of a wheel, to see if it works for her. You can even make one from a straight stick. Good luck!
She has been practicing with a drop spindle for a while and is currently under the wing of a local wool spinner who is going to teach her to use the wheel ❤

Thank you so much. The yurt looks awesome. You might need a bigger stove to keep you warm in winter… please make the chimney longer to make sure the ambers of ash do not burn your roof.
I did think it needed to be longer but I checked with the guys I got it from and they thought it would be ok. Maybe I’ll add another 500mm

As someone in the rat race, being successful and doing all the things society says you should be, we find ourselves still with a void in our lives and yearning for something different. I would love to buy some of Elsie's pumpkins but living in Spain I feel the carbon footprint of sending it over might be a bit much. They will until I find how they get in. We had our friend over who’s a conservation ranger and bat expert and has given us advice so hopefully we can get them to move into the shed :) or anywhere other than the yurt

All good so far. Can be a bit chilly on a frosty morning but doesn’t take long to warm up with the stove and if there is morning sun even better :)

Wonderful. The Yurt looks cozy! I would like to donate to Betsey's spinning wheel fund. What's the best way to send $$? Also, I love seeing bats flying at dusk...and they are great for eating unwanted bugs...and there are bat houses you can build and put in the woods or around your property. As a side note, I have heard they can carry rabies so best not to let them be too close. 🦇🦇🦇
I don’t think rabies are a problem here in Ireland luckily. I did mention building a bat box to my friend in conservation who was advising me on what to do

I'm living in Australia. Postage might be a bit much for buying the toys. Would she make a tutorial on crochet for children? I would be happy to pay for the tutorial for my homeschool childrens handicraft resource. Just an idea for her entrepreneur journey.

Originally I did my apprenticeship with Mercedes commercial vehicles and since had a camper conversion company so learnt a lot during that carpentry wise
