- It's the coldest day of the year at MINUS 42°C/F! So, we will give you a tour of our tiny yurt where you can see how we live minimally and survive the freezing winter with our four-season insulation.
We live in our 20-foot yurt nestled in the forest in Whitehorse, Yukon. We will give you a few hints about how we manage to live in a small round space with two people and a big Malamute cross dog!

Two helpful winter outhouse tips: 1. Keep the woodpile between the outhouse & the house so when you come back in you can bring more wood. 2. Keep the toilet seat next to the wood stove and take it with you so you'll have a warm place to sit.

We always used to have a piece of styrofoam in place of a toilet seat over the outhouse hole & then switch it out as per necessary (nice & warm on the butt during cold weather).

I always find homes like this way more attractive than huge houses cluttered with unnecessary gadgets. Massive consumerism is not the way to happiness. My only question is how you did office work without an Internet connection before?
Hi Max, thanks for watching again! We have a tiny office in downtown Whitehorse where we can do our office work as well. We used to spend more time there, but we do more office work here now that we have a cell connection!

2. Do you always go to sleep at exactly the same time? If no, where does person A linger while person B sleeps on your only sitting space?

1. Tomohiro didn't mind spitting in the kitchen sink. I have an aversion to spitting and washing dishes in one sink. I would only do it on really cold days and on warmer days I would brush my teeth outside in the bush. I'm much happier with 2 sinks. : )
2. Ahhh the joy of one room!!!!!!!!!!!! This is very difficult. When we are exhausted, we growl, "turn off the lights so I can sleep!!!" : ) Other times when we are not so grumpy, we compromise. We often take turns asking..."How many more minutes before I can turn off the lights?"
When Tomohiro needs to go aurora hunting and I need to get up early to substitute teach, he tries to sneak in quietly at around 3:30 am so he doesn't wake me. Sometimes it works. ; )

I love your home! One question I have about yurts is how to control mold, maybe that could be something you mention in a video...or maybe you have and I missed it. Really like your videos!
Hi Kelsey, thanks a lot for watching! Mold is not a big issue here as we have a dry climate. All we have to do is to wipe around the edge of the window in spring when frost between windows and insulations thaws.

Hello New Hampshire yurt dwellers. In the past we’ve hoped for snow for that extra insulation during the cold months. This has been a record high snowfall year! We’ve never had to consider a snow load kit. Typically the snow that falls is so light and fluffy, it just slides off and hugs us. This has been a very different year. You are so normal and that is so nice to watch, other people on CZcams are so over the top funny, that it is not funny anymore. And you manage to get to the point very well. I love your extra counterspace! I have to show that to my husband, because, I want to have this too!Is your oven on propane too? And where are you hoocked up to electricity-wise? And how come, you use a fridge, when it is that cold. Couln't you put the food outside or is there something, that does not work? The chest ist also so beautiful!
Hello there. Your comments made us smile. We share electricity with our neighbour and have a long extension cord connected to her house. . As for our fridge, we need that to keep our food at a stable temperature. If we kept our food outside in the winter, it would freeze instantly, and if we kept it inside, it would spoil. We would love to be completely off grid, maybe one day....We know some people who have a fridge in their insulated floor, which is impressive! Thanks for watching! 😄😄🐾🐾
What is the brand wood stove you have? And the water tank with the spigot? Just curious. Love that set up :)
Hi Rachel. We have a Chinook Blaze King. It’s a good size for our yurt. We purchased the metal water box that sits on top at a antique shop. It was actually made for a little wood stove. We are not sure how it was actually used. Somehow a smaller pipe fit right in the middle of the box. Thanks for watching.

You’re welcome Carl Dewitz. Be sure to get an all season yurt with the extra insulation. And we really recommend you have thick insulation under your floor. The coldest month for us is November because there is not enough snow to insulate outside around the bottom of the yurt. Just a few reminders. Happy yurt living. 🙂

Hello Sunjidmaa Tsogtmagni in Australia. You’re welcome. We purchased our yurt from Homer Alaska from a company called Nomad shelter. We have the 4 season insulation. This description is from their website.
It features Reflectix double foil-backed bubble wrap. This is lined on the interior side with a polyester mildew and fire resistant...
Nomad Shelter also offers a heavy four-season liner. Our four-season liner starts with the 3-season liner which is then upgraded with 1″ of polyester batting alongside the Reflectix and finished with an exterior layer of building wrap. Both the top cover and the walls include this extra insulation layer. We can even create custom insulation options for those in truly extreme climates who require even greater insulation. I’m not sure where it’s made.

Very nice setup. I lived in a 16footer for a year and found it too small, even for one person. A 20 or 22 footer would have been much less cramped.

We live outside of the U.S. 6 months out of the year (Fall/Winter months) and have been considering something like this for in the States .
I love the setup you two have …. Definitely bigger than our camper that we travel with for camping …. Very nice ….

Love your Yurt by the way. It never gets much below 5 to 10 below Zero where I live on rare occasions... so I'm thinking 50 inside still seems a bit to cold to life comfortably in the winter :(.

Yes, good plan. We tried putting in a high bed with space for an office underneath, but with such a small space, the whole “yurt feeling” was lost. You will definitely keep the feeling in a 30 footer. Enjoy yurt life! Thanks for watching. 🙂
Toilet: Have you tried the poop-in-a-5-gallon-bucket, and cover it, liberally, with sawdust idea, and keeping the bucket-in-use inside the yurt; perhaps with small exhaust fan & ceiling-vent?? (You need a compost pile for this.)
Did you say: "when it's -40 outside, it's +20 inside"? Brr! What if you added more wall/ceiling insulation?
I would consider keeping your boots in your 'outside' (patio?) space. Have you tried this?
I like your wood-stove.
So, reading the comments, perhaps humidity/mold may be a problem for yurt-living in spring/summer/fall for more humid climates?
Thanks for watching tkarlman. Plus 20 degrees Celsius indoors is quite warm for us Northerners. We do keep some of our boots in the patio space, but the ones we need to use regularly are indoors or else they feel like we are wearing blocks of ice. It is only 5 degrees Celsius warmer in the patio than outside. Take care.

Ok...I was almost sold on this concept, it looks cozy and relaxing.....UP until you said IF the stove is pumping...it can be +20 Inside...I love cold weather but I'm sorry, that just don't sound pleasurable at all.

What wood stove are you using
I think it is Blaze King Chinook 20, a bit large for our yurt but it gives enough heat during the winter.

Tomohiro was lucky enough to get an insulated floor second hand and he doesn’t remember how much we paid for that or what they are to purchase new. Our yurt is also an all season package. If you don’t live in a cold climate, you won’t need the extra insulation and your costs will be less. Good luck!
The shingles on you outhouse are overlapped upside down. The lower shingle should be covered by the one above it. If you have them covered from the bottom they trap water right up against the structure you are trying to protect.

When we purchased our yurt about 9 years ago, I think it was around $13,000 US. We were lucky to find a second hand floor and we built on a deck. So, you would need to consider those costs as well. Our yurt is 20' and the cost for a yurt our size is $12,150. You will notice that your costs will increase when you add insulation, windows, doors....
When we purchased our yurt, we didn't have the option to purchase a stovepipe assembly package. We needed to pay for a custom made chimney here in Whitehorse, Yukon, and it was way more expensive than what Nomad Shelter now offers.
You will also need to buy insulation for your floor. We were lucky to find a used yurt floor here at an antique shop...the guy who owns the shop used to sell Pacific Yurts and he had one. Good luck, Marcel.
Love the house, but after living in a house with no central heating or automatic system ... I have to say it is no for me :D
Can I ask why you don't use a chamber pot or portable cassette toilet inside and then empty the contents into the outhouse during the winter? I can't bear the thought of stumbling outside in the middle of icy nights for months on end every time I have to pee. I'm a private person but I would still prefer to do my business with an audience over going outside in those temperatures. I'm a Canadian, I know cold, but this is one thing I could not abide.

You need a heat reclaimer for you wood stove .

We hated the bucket under the sink , no reason not to have a gray drain , especially since you have a insulated floor space.
We have a 34’ nomad shelter with a 14’er attached as a bedroom. Our biggest complaint is the neighbors dogs.
It’s hard to keep out any noise. The hooting owls in the spring and fall keep us awake most of the night. Thanks so much for watching fellow yurt friends. 😃😃🐶

What about a shower?
We do not have a conventional shower but we have a sauna and outdoor shower attached to the sauna which we use only in the summer.

If you mean the counter I pull out of the kitchen cabinet, that is extra counter space. The carpenter needed to make that piece quite thin so it could slide in and out of the cabinet. I hope that makes sense, Jesse.
you should at least build a washroom inside the Yurt. I know some People who build Yurt they build an inside washroom and shower. especially in the winter you can not use a washroom or shower outside when it is freezing cold
Thanks for the comment. We thought about putting the washroom inside first but the one I used at my work had one inside and it always stank like a bathroom, so we are very happy that we didn’t in our case. As for shower, there is no way to build a pipe system that would not freeze in minus 30-40c in the dead of the winter. ( that is what there are so many “dry cabins” in Yukon and Alaska.) Because we have the harsh winter, we have to build our life around it, bearing the inconvenience for the rest of the year. It is just the way it is up here and we accept it. If we really need the convenience, we might as well move into a normal house :-)
