  • How does the Ariens IKON perform mowing an intricate backyard? Lots of obstacles. Lots of Walnuts and debris. Mowing really short.

    Thank you for your videos.
I installed the mulch kit/plug on my 2023 Gravely 48 inch and I did have to make some modifications to the plug. At least on my deck, the weld spots on the deck that are to hold the studs for the chute were larger than the cutouts on the plug.
When I first installed the plug, it would not sit flush to the deck. As a result, I needed to grind the area on the mulch plug where the stud welds openings were.
On the forward part of the plug, I needed to grind just a small amount to make sure it would clear one of the deck welds. I also needed to file down a little bit of the welding slag on the deck to make it flush.
I did not touch any of the welds on the deck and I did repaint anywhere I ground things down or filed on the deck to make sure there would be no rust. After this, it seems to work just fine.

@@PaulSikkema Wow, great I appreciate that. If you do install the mulch kit, it would be interesting to see your opinions on it. I feel it has done a good job mulching leaves so far and it definitely will get a great test later this fall!
I noticed that Grass Flap does have a plate that would cover the notch for their chute blocker but drilling is required and it is much more expensive than just the mulch plug.
I have been debating on creating a plate to block the notch and installing the Advanced Chute System too. However, I have been happy with the leaf mulching and also grass cutting with the plug installed.
Overall, I agree with your assessment so far with regards to the overall mower performance with regards to the Graveley version. Your in-depth review was helpful in my decision in purchasing this mower.

The aftermarket accessories are geared more towards the commercial operator. They are spending 3-4 times more on their mowers than what the residential IKON costs so they will spend the money if they have to mow in side discharge and mulch all in the same day.

Love seeing this mower in action. I’ve been looking for a zero turn and have been considering the icon. Now I just have to go see who has what in stock around me because I think I’m sold on this now.

I have a 2020 Ikon XD...IMHO best built mower and options in its price category - recommend

I also have an IKON XD and I like it a lot. BUT this is a complete redesign and all the "little things" people didn't like about your old model were redesigned. Your IKON XD cuts very well - this one cuts even better! Watch this video to see all the changes: czcams.com/video/Tv_ge4JGoU8/video.html

Not too fast - about 3-5 mph. In the previous video I was mowing as fast as it could go - 7 MPH!

I purchased this mower a few days ago and mowed now twice. It mows going forward fast if you want but to me it seems way to slow backing up. Did you notice this or is it just me? Also the two bent rods on the back underneath you pull out to move the mower around does not pull out far enough past the bends to lockout. Not sure what im doing wrong there. Thank you for making these video's

This I have IKON also doesn't go very fast in reverse. The listed speed in reverse is 3 MPH but mine is closer to 2 MPH. But I've been noticing many residential ZTRs will only back up about 2 MPH. Why? Two reasons and both have to do with many pets, neighbors and grandkids being run over by operators not looking well enough before they backed up.
      1. For a while many residential ZTRs decks would disengage/shut off when you put the mower in reverse. Too many owners complained and this safety feature seems to have disappeared on ZTRs although it's still common on lawn tractors. Slowing the reverse to 3 MPH or less. appears to have appeased the FEDs and they are not requiring the safety switch or backup alarm at this time.
      2. Commercial ZTRs will back up at 5 MPH and don't require back up alarms (like fork lift and construction equipment) but the main reason why is because the required commercial operator training stresses looking before backing. In addition most commercial operators work in areas where there are no people around them (you never see your school mowing the lawn when school is in session or kids are near the play areas)
I'll check with Ariens engineers later this month to hear if they have any other comments about the slow reverse.
Bypass levers. The ZT-2200 tranny bypass lever is not spring loaded like older models. The levers only move about 1/2 inch and stay in place until you physically move them in or out.

I may have missed it, but what speed were you cutting this grass? It appeared to be rather fast.

In this video 3-5 mph. In the previous video I run it full open - about 7 MPH.

The Gravely ZT X is the same mower as this one with a few extra features.
      1. The Gravely has Tooless metal belt covers on the deck
      2. Serviceable ZT-2200 transmissions
      3. Brighter headlamps
      4. More aggressive tread rear tires
      5. Tool tray under the floor pan cover.

What are your thoughts on the gravely ztx 42 compared to this one?

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  Před 9 měsíci

The Gravely ZT X and this mower are the same but the Gravely has more features.
      1. The Gravely has metal tooless belt covers.
      2. The Gravely has a tool tray under floor pan cover
      3. The gravely has more aggressive rear tires
      4. The gravely has brighter headlights
      5. The Gravely has serviceable ZT-2200 transmissions. You can change the oil. (the 2200 do not have oil filters - you have to move up to the Gravely ZT XL with the ZT 2800 trannys for tranny filters.

    Do you sell Ariens?

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  Před 9 měsíci +2

No, I'm just a homeowner who has been reviewing mowers and snowblowers for a long time. Before that I owned a lawn service and was one of the first to use zero-turn mowers for commercial use.
