2:39 that exact pistol (from training day) is also the pistol used in the show The Shield, which is my favorite (serious) show of all time. Which is part of why I’d love to own one
It would be nice to see Smith and Wesson make these again.
The Vic Mackey special
Relevant in 2024? Hell yes! It is still my EDC. Smith and Wesson should have never discontinued this pistol.
I wish they'd bring them back
@@BoomStickTactical I have two 4506s and just purchased my fourth 4506-1. I am a bit of a prepper, so my philosophy is to have redundant firearms you can shoot well and know like the back of your hand. For me, that is the 4506 and 4506-1. They are built like tanks, fed every round I have ever put into a magazine, and only the 645 jammed because of a poorly made reload cartridge I purchased which appeared to have damp smokeless powder. They are also very accurate. I also like their 1911 aesthetics, and being left handed, I don't have to send it off to a gunsmith to have an ambidextrous thumb safety installed. If Smith and Wesson reintroduced the -1, I would definitely purchase some. They are heavy guns, but that heaviness absorbs a lot of recoil, and you get even more recoil absorption when you use Hogue rubber grips.
My EDC is one of my 4506-1s in a Don Hume belt slide thumb break holster, but occasionally, I carry one of my 4506s that also fits well in the Hume holster. I have a 4506-1 in my night stand, and I have strategically placed my other S&Ws in other rooms of my house for quick access. I wish my wife was as comfortable with my S&W tanks as I am. She can shoot them, but they intimidate the hell out of her. She says they look mean and tough as nails.
Whats the difference between a 4506 and 4506-1. How do i tell which one i have
@stevenv1302 the shape of the trigger guard and I cand remember the rest. It's just a couple things
@@stevenv1302Little heavier slide and rounded trigger guard on the “-1”. They are both excellent quality and robust pistols that you will never wear out. The third gens are as overbuilt as an aircraft carrier. Simply wonderdul pistols that are as top tier as any Sig, HK, or Beretta…..in some ways better.
Have a 4566, the “compact” version. The only difference is the Barrel is 1/2” shorter. Not really compact! Fantastic guns!
The 4506-1 is just a TANK that can Shoot all day accurately and still looks great in any holster that it is put into. I own a Police Trade-In Agency Contract 4506-1 that has ZERO MIM parts and Shoots like a Dream! I did replace the OEM plastic Grips that are too Skinny for my hands with a Hogue Set of BEAUTIFUL Checkered Cocobolo Grips that make the Stainless Pop and give me plenty of grip to hold properly. I also have the SW645, TSW4566 West Virginia Contract, CHP TSW4006 and my latest addition a Lew Horton Distribution SW Performance Center .40SW Comp Pistol. The 40 Comp Pistol was a very limited edition of 240 pistol but only 194 went up for sale thru Lew Horton back in 1991 and early 1992.
I'd like to see smith making the Gen 3 guns again. I'd add a fee more to my collection
@@BoomStickTactical I have been sending emails to SW Customer Service about 5 or 6 per year for the last 6 years asking them to bring back the All Steel Semi Auto 5900, 4000, 4500 and 1000 series of pistols and have them come back with the TSW thicker Frames and Rails that are milled onto the Frame and have the same Slides and Barrel combo plus add Optic Cuts for RMR Optics. I have also been asking them to make sure that they offer 5, 4.25 and 3.75 inch barrel models in each caliber. The Tactical SW upgrades just make a Tank even stronger with Thicker Barrel Walls and everything else is also made even more bulletproof.
I carried one of these monsters on my hip for a long time on duty (long ago). I've had it in the safe for a long time now because the tip of the ejector lever broke off, which was not uncommon. I've had the part for at least 10 years. I got it out today, watched a couple of videos, and replaced the ejector lever in about 5 minutes. It's a keeper! Love it, and now (retired) it is a great range toy. I would still conceal carry this under a large jacket. I'm sure some of my back problems can be atributed to the years I carried this beast.
I'm glad to have mine. Great gun
Concealed carry, not conceal carry.
I love these old 3rd gen S&Ws. 4506 is one of the best DA/SA models Smith made in my opinion. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching. I'm going to get it out to the range again soon. I'm just waiting for the temperature outside to get above my age. 🤣
@@BoomStickTactical Lol! Keep warm! I'll look forward to the video at some point this spring!
I have a 645 (Gen 2). Has the best reset of any gun I’ve ever fired. Literally a whisper trigger
Very cool. I wish Smith would start making them again
I have a regular 4506 and a -1. They are rock solid and beautiful weapons.
It would be nice if they started making them again
I have heard people whine and complain about the Magazine-Out-Safety... but not one time has anyone had a legit reason... Massad Ayoob has attributed saved lives of cops that popped out the mag when a perp grabbed their pistol.
It certainly can help.
I read on some thread that you can remove the rear sight and take out the plunger for the magazine safety, but that safety seems more of a pro than a con.
If you're the one holding it, presumably you're only releasing the empty to load a fresh mag, and if you're not the one holding it (and struggling with the assailant), dropping the mag seems like a nice little last ditch lifesaver if the other guy wrenches it from your grip.
It is possible to remove it but it was added for law enforcement in the event someone tries to grab their gun. They drop the mag and render the gun useless to be used against them.
@@BoomStickTactical but then wouldn't only the police trade-in 645s have that feature? I know it had a short run, but not all 645s were police issue, right?
My understanding was that it came as a standard feature for the 645, but the FBI actually requested theirs to not have it.
Just what I read though.
Love those old S&W's.
I wish they'd bring them back
@@BoomStickTactical Yes! With a 10mm version too
@bradstrozier3260 that's the 4006 I believe.
Looks like my old 5906
This is the 45acp they made.
Thanks Boom, That is such sweet pistol. Hope everything is well witcha and ur family. Stay safe and healthy!
Thanks Dawg. I'm glad to have it. You stay safe also.
One of the guns on Miami Vice!
Yep and a few other shows as well.
I had the 1006 in 10mm back in the late 80's 👍
It would be nice if they started making them again. Thanks for watching Lloyd.
I have a 4596, I bought new early 90s.
Very cool
In the early 1990's when I was a police officer the 4506 was my duty pistol. All the other guys carried Beretta 92s.. when they asked me why I carried "that thing" my answer was simple.. I'd rather throw 9 Mac trucks than 16 Volkswagens.. 😂
Yep. And if you ran out of ammo you could still throw it. I hope you kept it after retiring
@@BoomStickTacticalunfortunately no.. I ran into some financial difficulties and had to sell everything..
Love this thing! I vaguely remember using one in a school back when I was on active duty. Seemed like a favorite for some of the LEO’s I worked with. I’m always looking for a good de-cocking pistol.
It would be nice to see them start making them like this again.
Nice pistol! I carried a full sized steel frame 5 inch barrel 1911 today first time! My brother gave me a chest rig that carries comfortably.
Having a holster that's comfortable is important.
I have one. Great addition to any collection.
It really is!
It shoots fine with factory ammunition, but has problems with my new brass loads. Failures to extract.
American weapons are lit 🔥 ❤ love from India
Thanks for watching.
I also have one, and carried it for years, love it, however "tack driver" and "4506" probably have never been used in the same sentence. I always attributed my fairly large groups at 25 yards to the 925ish fps lead speed. By the time the projectile leaves the barrel the muzzle has jumped because of the recoil. All that being said, in the current world of firearms, not many are cooler than that S&W series and/or the good ol' Beretta 92's.
It would be nice if they would start making them again.
Bullshit. There is zero recoil effect before the bullet exits the barrel. In addition the 4506 is exceptionally accurate. You just can't shoot.
Best 45 ever built imo
Yep. It's a tank.
The Walter White's gun
It's a classic
Great Looking Gun Boom!
Thanks Terry. I've had it for quite a long time. It's a beast. Stay warm in all this cold weather. It's about 8 degrees here.
@@BoomStickTactical Same to you Bro it's 7 here
@@terrybarnes0712 were supposed to hit zero tonight. I'm ready for summer.
I almost thought this was the gun that was in reservoir dogs. But it was the S&W 659.. Kind of want to buy that gun at some point.
They're getting harder to find.
Oh I bet at this point. @@BoomStickTactical
Good gun. Those aren't the Novak sights, by the way... the fixed sight, "lo mont" types were the Novaks. These are standard S&W adjustable fare.
They're not the best but they work.
Taurus should come out and start manufacturing copies of it. Hell why not? They copy practically everything else S&W makes
It would be nice for Smith to start making them again.
@@BoomStickTactical THey repeatedly said they will never do that because it's "not economical" even though that's BS. Companies like Zastava and Astra make NICE Sig clones for $500-$1000. CZ makes it's own pistols and a bunch of makers that clone that. So all metal DA/SA hammer fired pistols ARE economically viable to produce.
It most definitely IS....
Yep. It would be nice to see them start making them again
It anyone has ever seen the film Insomnia, with Al Pacino and Robin Williams, a rare version of this pistol is carried by Pacino”s character. The pistol is the S&W 4505. The 05 had a black finish and for me, is the more desirable version.
Good luck finding one.
@@BoomStickTactical There is one on Gunbroker right now with fixed sights. The person is asking way too much money for the condition the pistol is in.
@@The_Fat_Controller. they'll do that. I wouldn't pay too much for one in bad shape. Mine is in perfect condition. Whoever had it didn't shoot it a lot.
@@BoomStickTactical This particular 4505 has been listed for several months now with a starting bid of $1850 (which is also the Buy It Now price). OK, I know it's kind of a rare gun. Only 1200 were reportedly made. But the gun isn't pristine! There is wear on the bluing. It has what appears to be a hodgepodge of 3 different magazines. No pictures or mention of a case. I've seen better ones go for less. Every time I see it, I'm thinking, give it up, pal. No one wants your 4505 for $1850! Lower the price or stop listing it. I'm tired of seeing it. And, no, I don't want it even at a lower price. Can't sight worth a damn out of an S&W 3rd gen with fixed Novak sights. If I was going to spend that kind of money on a 3rd Gen, I would rather buy a 1006. Keep eyeing them, but I honestly don't have any real need or use for a 10mm. But I still keep looking at the 1006 listings.
I promise the bullets flying out of the muzzle are relevant. If it functions it’s relevant. 😀
This thing is a classic
The Vic Mackey special
And Sonny Crockett.
@xx8836
Nostalgic my guy
Thanks for watching.

I don't sell them
Beautiful😘😘
It's a great gun
I’d take off that stupid bullshit u got on the pistol grip lol
That's how it was when I got it and I plan to keep it that way
