- Looking for one of the best handling CUVs? That'd be Ford's long running Escape. Even though the Escape is one of the older crossovers in this segment it is still a strong contender with a low starting price and a variety of turbo engines.

If you get an Escape, go for the 2.0 turbo, you won't regret it! This engine is awesome.
I approve this message
I prefer the 2 litre diesel 180 and 400NM of torque pulls strong from tickover.
M James the 2.0 makes peak torque at 3000...
I’m thinking about picking one up. Back in 2016 I rented one. So fun.

Thank you for keeping you comparisons within the bounds of common sense. I've seen too many reviewers and sites say the phrase "Well it's no Porsche, but it'l get you where you're going..." while driving something like a Yaris or Sentra.
Thanks for consistently making excellent reviews. And thanks for going back to the Escape Titanium for this update. You're Number One in my book, Alex!!
Alex, you are a top notch reviewer. Always data driven and also great personal insights.
I'm surprised you didn't mention towing. We have a SE 2.0L and it does a great job with a trailer. Also managed to get 26 mpg with a 2000lb popup on the highway.
15.2 in the 1/4 mile is about what a stock 70s Camaro with a small block would do. Progress, baby.
I've driven 2.0L EcoBoost Escapes on a number of journeys and have gotten between 28-29 consistently.
Mine is also 2.0L EcoBoost. I have a similar MPG as yours. But back when the car is new, I get similar MPG as Alex, maybe break-in or sth....
What velocity?
Having our 2013 2.0t for 5 years. No issue at all. Replaced the tires with pirelli p zero Nero and got much better traction made it almost a focus like handling. Downside is it reduce the mpg to 22-25 range. We also replaced the battery recently. It's a nightmare if you want to do yourself. You have to either remove the ac intake or engine air intake box. Some "German over engineering" thing made the easiest job hard.
The manual actually recommends regular gas for 1.6T and 2.0T, but also mentioning the premium may provide more power for heavy-duty driving, such as towing.
Thanks, Alex!
Looks like you have some new asphalt on your test circuit. Looks like fun.
Awesome review as usual, Alex. Thanks!
I have enjoyed every review from you so far, they are great! Are you expecting to review a ford Taurus in the near future?
One advantage of this vehicle over most of its class is that properly equipped it can tow 3,500 lbs. Some can only tow 1500, and even some midsize crossovers like the Murano can't tow very much. Comes in handy every now and then even if you don't tow regularly.
hate this ugly mess of a car with a passion but i've been watching several of your reviews per day trying to decide on a new vehicle. I have to say you're BEYOND the best of the best on youtube! Your grading system, although unusual gives an excellent perspective especially when watching reviews back to back. Keep doing what you're doing Alex!! I'll always watch your stuff, and the scenery in the area you live is absolutely beautiful! I follow reviewers for months and sometimes years before I subscribe due to a variation in quality and consistency but your work never disappoints!! ten out of ten!! all day everyday!! Bravo! :)
Thanks. Great videos especially this year. You are very lucky to test drive cars for a living something I know you love. From one car enthusiast to one another Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
keep up the good work! you are always on point.
Looking forward to your video of best 2015 cars at each price and class segment..
Based on how many complaints I've seen about damaging internal coolant leaks on the Eco Boost engines, the standard 2.5L normally aspirated engine may be the way to go for long term reliability.
Great review
I luv my Escape !!!! Very informative video ! Thank you ! 😃👍
I had a 2015 Escape SE 1.6T and now have 2017 Escape SE 2.0T, I can say that it takes about a half a year or so of braking it in to get the fuel economy figures the Ford claims. I'm pretty happy overall with 2.0T.
Gotta like your grading system
Alex, if you could choose between a new 2016 Escape Titanium, or a 2014 Subaru Forester 2.0 XT with 35k miles on it, for the SAME PRICE (26k), which would you do?
Alex, I understand your preference to compare more popular makes/models, but regardless of sales rank the Forester is readily available and gaining traction; it's less and less of a niche brand every year. More importantly, your review channel has enough subs/views to affect popularity, and as such I find it a shame that you're being reactive re sales figures as opposed to proactive in comparing vehicles that the audience might not have considered. Just my 2 cents, I still think your reviews are the best on youtube!
+Cooking and Fishing According to independent market research the Escape's top competitors are the RAV4, CR-V, Rogue and Cherokee, so this is counting the valid competition. I'm not discounting the Subaru in any way but again if you include that, then you have to include #5, #6 and #7 in the segment as well and this video would have been an hour long. The Forester has been in 8th or 9th place for some time and since Subaru has said they are capping production rather than expanding it is unlikely to change any time soon. In addition the Forester is unique in that it is less expensive than the base models of the competition despite having standard AWD this results in the Forester not being very competitive at higher end trims like the Titanium model of the Escape that we were testing.
My BMW tech has also "suggested" occasionally "revving the nuts" (AoA quote) off their 2.0 DI turbo to help prevent the buildup.
Thanks for the link.
Good reviews. Had to mention though that you didn't touch at all on the AWD abilities. I actually have one of these now, and it's awesome in the snow and gravel hills. Never get stuck. FWD favored, but I guess that's for safety and fuel economy.
I'm sure your mother-in-law is a lovely person, Alex.
When ru going to do review on 2017 Ford Escape titanium ?
How's it with comparison to VW Tiguan btw? And also I wanted to ask are you planning to do any compares between different cars?
Alex, Please test road noise by driving on Concrete highways. Ride on asphalt roads is always quite regardless of any brand vehicle. You will find noticeable difference in Cabin noise once you drive on Concrete Highways. Most of the states now using concrete instead of asphalt.
Is there a lot of torque steer with the 2.0 ecoboost with front wheel drive?
Hi Alex, will you be posting a review of the 2016 Explorer soon?
Outstanding review. But please keep your eyes on the road. . . .
Would you mind doing a full detailed review on a 2016 Ford Explorer limited? Preferably a 3.5L AWD?
hi nice detailed very informitive reveiw im just wondering in general and with the escaoe us this class if vehicle a dependable vehicle to have for a long time
I've been noticing a trend of most Ford Ecoboost products recently having inflated mileage claims. The benefit is they are more rapid than competitors, but the MPG is not as beneficial as Ford claims to be over the old V6 engines.
Alex, do you think the refreshed 2017 Escape will have the new 10 speed automatic that the new F-150 Raptor will have?
+Elliott Manning No, the Escape uses a transverse transaxle while the F-150 uses a longitudinal transmission and the two are quite different in overall design.
Alex...I so agree with you on the last generation Rav4...how I miss that 6.
And because of it leaving, I ended up with my 13 Escape.
But you are dead wrong about the Rogue. That non usable back seat and not much more cargo never make up for that poor driving. Drive and power simple mean so much more than a non-usable third seat in day to day life.
I loved your review of the Sorento...but have a nit to pitch on the EPA MPG ratings. The Ford does better with the 4 turbo...22/30/25. I get much better with premium.
Even the Ford AWD does as well as the FWD of the Sorento. Ford 21/28/23. vs 20/27/23. How in heck does the Ford, with better numbers, equal the Kia? I must be missing something here.
But I will go out and test since you made me feel it is something to see.
Here it is, as you summed it up, Alex.
Power. Cargo, driving and price. Nothing else gives you all of these. And these make getting into and driving this car a lot of fun every day. Perky and fun...IMO.
But your MPGs as usual, seem out of whack with my years in this car as well as other ecoboost engines.
Personal issues...plastic connection center stack noise as well as the front lower window narrowing.
I will add that once I changed from regular to premium in my Ford ecoboost engines, I added a minimum 2 to 3 MPG in overal driving. The MKS has gone up by two, the Escape 2.0 went from 24. 3 to 27.
What is with all these ecoboost MPG reading you guys get? I drive relatively easy all my Fords...and my MPGs are well better than any of yours. I used to average 22 in the 3.5 MKS. Easily. And now I average even better with premium.
This is awesome considering premium is only .20 per gallon more. And the power is just wonderful!
Yes...this is with a reversed 60hwy/40 city style or environment.
But even still...the earlier readings were from the same.
I will also add value. The ES with the better 2.0 cost me 25K. Nothing I looked at gave me as much car and this top engine for that money. The 2.0 is one of my all time fav engines.
The bad buyer remorse? Well...I wish I had gotten the vav/back up and better seats. I do not like the daily cloth seats and the after market mirror back-up/nav system is a bit small.
I am not in agreement about the handling or MPG as stated above. In my opinion, there is no better driving car. I test drove the Mazda many times and am trying to get my sister to get one for her daughter...but only because of pricing. Both were fun, but the Mazda was almost even and much slower. The Escape, however, handles as well as any fun Mazda I have ever driven. Yes...a bit jumpy and firm, but this is directly a result of the ability to handle and drive as if it is a sports like car.
It handles turns and roads as well as any car.
I am one that suffers from the vibrations. The vibrations and noise come from the center stack area where plastic sections meet. On my bumpy mountain road, it is
/was bothersome. ALL noise kills a car for me. But other family members and passengers think I am the nutty one. They seem not to hear or be bothered by these small, irritating crackles.
But I hear and search down ALL noise.
I added small foam inserts under the connecting areas and it ha stopped. But it is a reality.
I understand even the newest Avalon suffers this very same annoyance.
And, along with this cheap/noisy plastic connecting finish, I think THE most bothersome feature is the windshield. It narrows a bit to much towards the bottom, creating a nasty vision issue for me. I just cannot get used to this narrow bottom view along with the A pillar.
any idea why our 2016 ford escape titanium doesnt have the ford Sync3? just ford sync 2 it looks like.
You have lost weight Alex, congrats!
Is there a 2017 Escape review happening soon?
I like the beefy boxy Escape
Hi Alex, will you be reviewing the 2016 Honda Accord anytime soon ? would love to see your review on that.
+Atul Mohan That review will probably be out on Wednesday this week.
We have 2.0 diesel awd in Australia. Made in Spain
Alex, any word on whether Honda will have a software upgrade path to add iOS CarPlay for 2015 vehicles such as the recently redesigned Honda CR-V? The physical layout looks the same and I would love to upgrade to CarPlay.
The hardware changed as well so there will be no upgrade path
I'm surprised you really didn't talk about the Forester seeing how it also has an available Turbo with similar power figures.
+niuhuskieguy Weird. I like subaru a lot but I didn't think of Forester until read your comment.
The forester is 8th in compact crossover sales and I usually focus on the main players or vehicles similar to the one reviewed. You'll notice I also didn't talk about the more popular Equinox, etc.
+Alex on Autos only 8th!? I'm really surprised.
Very nice SUV.
please review 2017 2018 escape. Thanks.
Totally speeding through a lot of that review lol
w ex assswaaqaase
wanna know about 2017 escape
Even 23 mpg is ridiculous for a compact crossover. I get 20 mpg out of Wrangler every day, solid axles and all.
I had the 2.0 for a week as a rental I got an avg of 32 MPG
+Cyberslug1 That's why they say "your mileage will vary."
+Elliott Manning I didn't question what he got! I'm telling other what I got.
Cyberslug1 I know your not. I just feel that people read too much into those darkened font numbers on the M.S.R.P and forget that they are estimates, not guarantees.
When will you do Hyundai Tucson 2016 model ? obviously you reviewed all the compact SUVs except for the Tucson which is odd !!
+SuperCortisone I will have it in the next few weeks
Can you get the 2016 Toyota 4Runner?!
.
.
always superior reviews...
older version
capable of short cuts across rolling farm fields in snowy and wet, muddy conditions
this cutie will look just fine in that premier parking spot for "Mothers with children" at Target..
with plenty of room for soccer balls and sandals.
and the word: "titanium" ...?? really... why... prefer..
"cute" trim level.
yawn...
Interesting that Ford no longer offers a hybrid Escape.
Just want to ask those who still have this model in 2019, Any issues encountered? Pleasr reply. Thanks
I'd like to know too I may be buying a 2106 soon!
270hp in something CX5ish... Mazda, take note!
They should offer that new 2.5 Skyactiv turbo in the 2017 CX5
My parents have the same car BUT in blue 🚘👫
Hi. Alex
Reguler gas & supreem. Are the same.
drive it please
Compare compare comes
why all the times you talk about 3rd seat you said "its really for your child or mother-in-law". Is that your mother-in-law is very short or means that mother-in-law is not important? Just curious cuz in my country mother-in-law is as important as your mother
Garn
2017 Escape is all new - they brought back the chrome :-/
Worst review I've ever seen... NOT!
