Blade is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Marv Wolfman and penciller Gene Colan, his first appearance was in the comic book The Tomb of Dracula #10 as a supporting character, but later went on to star in his own storylines.

Tbh the 90s Blade movie is severely underrated. Love those first two movies
Everyone speaks very positively about those movies and hardcore fans give it its due diligence for the reason we have comic books movies today.

@@thejworks07 not gonna lie, I never imagined comics would get their proper respect and visual displays the way they are now, and I’m glad for it…I was the biggest nerd ever: thousands of comics, as far back as the 70s, wizard magazine, all of it…but I’ve skipped a lot of mcu movies cuz the heart isn’t in it. Corney jokes, predictable plots, predictable villains. Like I said, im happy for the revival and expansion of wha inspired me to join the army, but dang im almost 40 lol can I get an actual plot one day😅

I guess this explains why I haven't seen you or any other comic book CZcamsrs talk about new Blade comics. It's a shame he should get new comics and good stories. Perhaps they shouldn't just limit him to just hunting vampires and have him deal with supernatural threats like Dr. Strange and Ghost Rider.
I think the same could be said for occult horror comics in general…are not popular the way they currently are in “Marvel”. With the exception of Dr. Strange and Ghost Rider, and even those books have been canceled a couple of times. Marvel has not had a must read horror occult hit.
Exactly what I was thinking. Not limiting Blade to JUST vampires and giving him a wider range of ALL types of supernatural threats seems like the obvious thing to do right?
He's been in a few team ups and stories that were more than vampires but he's usually not the main character. He'll just be hanging out lol.

There's an answer for Blade's Daywalker "chicken of the egg" question. There was a panel interview/discussion with the 90's Spider-Man Animated series writers. When Blade came up, the head writer revealed that it was actually them that ended up making Blade half Vampire first before both the movie and the comic. The movie seems to have followed their interpretation in particular because Whistler, Blade's mentor in the movie, comes from the cartoon and not the comics. I remember watching the conversation about a year ago, so it should still be on CZcams somewhere. I'll link it in an edit if I come across it again.
I was wondering thgis because Spiderman TAS was my introduction to Blade, and i figured he was always a Daywalker
His origin in being a day walker is wonky . If I remember correctly the Civil War tie in he was in, he had stated that the bite from morbius didn't change him at all.

@@peanut5053 Morbius can't turn others into vampires because he isn't that kind of vampire. Blade's half-vampirism comes from his mom's being turned while he was still connected to her.
@@jerfuhrer2581 yes i know Blade is Dhampir. Originaly his only ability was him being immune to vampire bites I believe. After he was bitten by Morbius thats when he gained his other abilities.
What im saying is that in the Civil War tie in there is a panal stated the the bite from morbius didn't change him. So what im wondering was his other abilities a result of morbuis biting him or part of him being a halfbreed. I think they retconned it to him being born a Dhampir
Im actually pretty excited for the Blade movie, and I'm curious to see what this Blade will be like compared to Wesley Snipes portrayal. I'm also really looking forward too the soundtrack, especially if they go the black panther route and make like a proper album.
Might be too much to ask Marvel to slap an R Rating on it. As well as other supernatural elements aside from vampirism.
I feel like if they are going to take the step into R ratings again, Blade is absolutely the movie to do it with. The ice skating uphill line is kind of legendary
I'm a huge Blade fan i contribute Snipes portrayal as the character for me learning of and eventually falling in love with Marvel characters I think it'd be cool if they brought back Snipes Blade even if just for a cameo to kinda enhance or piggyback from the multiverse or variant movement thats going on so far
Weslie Snipes portrayal is like Heath Ledger, Johnathan Majors, Tom Holland, Chadwick, Hugh Jackman, ... #classic

What made blade (the movie) great was Wesley Snipes, I'm know Ali is a great actor, but with how marvel writing is doing now, I have concerns on the new movie.
Something about a vampire character being created by a person with the name Wolfman is very funny to me. Also, Colan sounds close enough to Cullen for it to be even funnier
Fun fact: in the comics Blade is actually British as opposed to American. He was raised in a London Brothel in Soho by sex workers.
I oddly kinda wanna hear that live action at least once just see what it’s like 😂

Man. Wouldn’t it be sick to have Blade go up against the Predator? I feel like that’s a pretty good universe to turn up the horror aspects of Blade/Predator/Aliens

Wesley Snipes was perfect for this role, but I think Michael Jai White would've been a better choice over Mahershala Ali. Michael Jai White is real life martial arts practitioner. He is Spawn, Bronze Tiger, Universal Soldier, Blood and Bone, Undisputed 2, Never Back Down, Falcom Rising, Dark Knight. He definitely is the better choice.
Also, Blade stories can be much better if the writers think outside the box. Blade doesn't only have to fight vampires. His power set and skillz make him great as street level hero or he can be elevated to a magical status by implementing him into Dr. Strange story arcs where Blade gets involved with voodoo and witchcraft. He can become friends with Brother Voodo and learn how to use it and add to his powerset.
Blade can have cool adventures with Spider/Wolverine team ups, Xmen team ups, Dr. Strange or Avengers team ups. Or even associate him with Wakanda and create a story line where he ends up dating Storm or marrying Shuri. I have so many ideas. Blade can be used in any storyline, but the writers need to back away from vampires for a while.

Blade is too cool of a character to limit to vampire hunting. He has the potential to be much more if writers handled him with respect. I've always wanted him to be a herald of Knull.

I love Blade and hope he's gets a continued storyline. The biggest fail by marvel thus far is when they tried to make his dad white. It was funny when Blade mocked it.

The Blade movie will most likely suck.
I think the daywalker idea might have started in the Spiderman 90's animated series as he was a dhampir in it instead of daywalker but still used serums to suppress his need for blood. I also believed that is when Whisker was first created.

I always wanted to get more into Blade but always had a hard time. I think you said it well, he’s there but to me it seems kinda disjointed. Maybe I never looked hard enough.
In spite of a lifelong love relationship with comics I’d never heard of Blade before the movies.

Regarding Morbius "...he was a super hero...when he wasn't consuming folks." One of the best lines, had me cracking up.
Of course Morbius’ first encounter with Blade was Blade trying to kill him. That’s kind of every vampire’s first encounter with him, Mike is just one of the lucky ones to get a second meeting

Let's also not forget that popularity ramped up after he appeared in the 1994 Spider-Man series. Where he used a frickin LIGHTSABER.

dude is 54 though. yes sure many of the marvel people are in their 50's, but say they make 2 or 3 blade movies, dude might be in his 60's. they probably wanted a younger less muscular dude.

Watching the Blade movies as a kid was my initial intro into vampires. I had a dvd of Blade Trinity that literally got wore out because I watched it so much as a kid.

I feel like marvel dropped the ball with this character, especially in the comics you literally never see him as a guest or in any big events like civil war etc.
He has been seen in recent comics.. hell, he was part of the avengers living in the avengers celestial mountain.

Black Panther teamed up with Blade during Reginald Hudlin's Black Panther run. Brother Voodoo, Luke Cage, and Monica Rambeau were also part of that team up too.
Probably my favorite comic book character. Watched the Wesley Snipes movies so much as a kid(Even watched the Sticky Fingaz one) I'm ready for mahershala to reprise the role.

Lots that I didn't know here. But I always had a problem with the art on Blade books after the movies. They always seemed to want some alternative style instead just letting, for example, a Bryan Hitch or Sean Chen or Trevor Hairsine go to work and create the mood. That rarely happens with X-Men or other "top" titles. Thanks, Rob, for always sharing your knowledge.

The funny thing is that it wasn’t the comics or the movies that introduced Blade as the Daywalker first. It actually was set up in 2nd season of the FoxKids Spider-Man cartoon in 1996, two years before the movie was released. The character of Whistler, Blade’s mentor was also officially introduced in that show as well.
I remember an interview or a director commentary or something like that about the Blade movie where they said they made him a 'Daywalker' because it was more expensive to try and film outside at night and also a bigger pain in the ass. Lighting etc.
Blade was one of my favorites of all time with snipes. I could watch blade 2 for the rest of my life. Blade 3 didn't do it for me, they pulled a Disney and turned Dracula into a joke. At the rate Disney is going i dont trust them doing anything good with blade.

Dont forget that the early 90s saw a HUGE resurgence surrounding vampires in general. The book Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice was written way earlier, but the hype was at its height at that time and the movie adaptation came out in 94. In the geek world Vampire the Masquerade (RPG) was released in 91 and was heavily influenced on the Anne Rice book. The Bram Stokers Dracula movie also released in 92. So yeah, lots of vampire stuff back then. Its not a coincidence that they decided to make Blade movies at that time and that the hype for blade died out with the hype for vampires in general.
I hope they flesh him out and make a good movie!

Blades first appearance was in 1973?! NICE, I was born in 1973, October. I remember seeing back and random packaged issues when i was little and youd get the scary books batched together, same for the rest. But whenever I saw Tomb of Dracula ads or comics, Blade was always nearby. Every time I saw him thereafter his Look was stylistically up to the times of his appearance. Then the look was solidified by the Wesley Snipes films. That look carried over to the subsequent shortly lived Blade tv series but also in the comics as well.
