- Welcome back to talking dashboards and stability control revisited. We intended today to continue a rant on owner's manuals, but it will have to wait. Some time ago, we did a video covering electronic stability control or ESC and its associated indicator light. Its the only indicator light that is seen when a system is actually doing its job -- and doing it properly!
It has generated more questions than any other 100 + videos we have in the library, including a new one this week. So, we will spend some time covering the new ground those questions have moved us to. This version ads some clarity.

2009 Kia Sorento. My Check Engine & ESC OFF light comes on while I'm driving typically when I first start driving the car for that day. When it turns on, it does not allow me to accelerate and I have to pull over and turn off the car and restart it then it drives fine but will now only have the Check Engine light on. I've taken it to the Kia dealership and had 3 other mechanics look at it and nobody knows what is going on. It happened today on the way up a bridge and nearly caused an accident. Any suggestions on what to tell the next mechanic to look for? The only thing that comes up when the use the diagnostic computer for the check engine light is a faulty oxygen sensor. Can that cause this ESC problem?
The answer is yes, as the video states. The ESC is NOT the problem. You have a serious engine issue and you need a MUCH better mechanic. Find a new one!!
I have a 2013 Dodge Avenger and the check engine and ESC light came on so I took my car to Auto Zone to check the Check Engine light and said that it came on because it needs a Breaklight Switch replacement. Do you think the ESC light came on because of that?
Well, first, the ESC light came on because of the check engine light. The check engine is always primary. However, I am skeptical that the check engine light came on because of a brake light switch. But, its an inexpensive fix, so it will be worth eliminating. Let me know what happens!
Well, I was pretty sure I replied yesterday, but now I don't see it.
Anyway, IF the Check Engine light is on, it would account for the ESC light. The system will be shut off until the engine issue is resolved.
However, I don't see a brake light switch setting off the Check Engine light. Maybe its one of the versions of a BRAKE light?? It could also shut off the ESC, resulting in the ESC light being on.
ESC depends on the proper functioning of other systems, and so is shut down if those systems are compromised.
I hit a potehole right Tyre busted, its rim damaged....after that my Audi A5 intermittently shows me warning ⚠️ "Stabilisating control malfunction " + TPMS faulty " and sometimes the engine sign come on and off.....Im not sure if I have to buy TPMS sensors or ABS sensors or what...
You didn't say -- was the wheel replaced? Ned to start there...
I have a 2012 Kia Optima, I had the tires changed and they are the same size tires as before, but now whenever the car is driven over 65 MPG the traction light comes on and the ride is rough. Any suggestions?
Either an alignment or balance problem. Either way, go back to the tire store...
Good evening! I hit a bump today and my car bounced up and down. The vsc off light is now on, any ideas on the issue?
Something was likely knocked loose or out of alignment. You'll need a good service center...

I have a 2018 Chevy Equinox and the light came on saying Service ESC, but no other light came on at all. Is it still safe to drive?
In essence, yes, but drive more carefully and be even extra careful in slippery conditions. And do get it fixed!!

I am unable to disengage trraction control on my 05 ES330 I'm unable to get emissions due to this problem both my track off VCS and check engine light are on
There is an engine problem that needs to be addressed. The other systems will come to life (and the lights go out). Please check that your gas cap is tight first. If loose, tighten it and drive a bit. If it is tight, a good mechanic will be needed...
What about if ESC apply on the dashboard then the car will stop driving what will be the problem
If I understand correctly, the car stalls. This is more likely an engine problem and the engine light is likely on too. You'll need a good local mechanic to diagnose...
I have a Mitsubishi outlander 2006 and this warning light came on and won't go off and says service needed, need some help.
And I'm sorry to say only a hands-on diagnosis will help. Find a local technician you trust...
