Some of the points in this video are so critical especially about PORTABILITY. I have owned a ROG Ally for a few months. I love the power it provides to play any game. However, I found that about a month or so in I began to not engage with it as often because of the inflexibility of the device. I travel a lot I also have a family. So when I game there are many occasions where I have to put the device down and tend to things. I would love to be able to come back to the game and know that 1) The battery hasn't been chewed up on stand-by 2) The game will resume right where I left off 3) I won't encounter some weird glitch that requires the system to restart. The ROG offers none of these. At first I thought "I'll be playing this mostly plugged in". I learned very quickly that I need a device that I can travel with, that gets great battery life, and that is more flexible. I was on a flight with my ROG and it couldn't last more than 45 minutes. That's when I knew I needed a change. I just ordered a steam deck yesterday. My kids all have one, so I am looking forward to joining the deck daddy crowd.

I actually was in the same situation however the reality is that neither a Rog or Steam deck is something that is "portable" in that sense. Meaning portability within the house then sure. Portability when you are traveling then getting a smaller emulation device or the switch is just a better way to go. The biggest factor is A) size, B) cost of the device (do you really want a rog or steam deck around), and C) types of games you will realistically play outside of your home, during a work trip, and vacation trip. The Deck and ROG for me are home devices that have portability. Everything else i use for trips outside of the house i.e. miyoo mini+ or a switch.

For the past few days, I surprisingly haven’t used my Deck all that much. I used it a little bit last night having another failed attempt putting Sega Model 2 and 3 arcade games. I can’t have Daytona USA and Scud Race working on my Deck for the life of me. And no Saturn games on it either. Tried Shantae: 1/2 Genie Hero for Vita and that didn’t work. That last one is fine as I can always play it on my Vita.
The handheld I’ve been using more lately has been my turquoise Switch Lite. Trying to get three stars for every cup on those Booster courses in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. I have no problems with the graphics. Booster courses looks fine. Did not understand all the negativity about them last year. I’m actually amazed with the level of power that the Switch Lite has while being that small. Think how big the PS3 phat is and the Switch is more powerful than it, Xbox 360, and Wii U.
I will eventually go back using my Steam Deck the most. It’s my all-time favorite handheld. Taking a short break from it. It has most of my favorite retro consoles I want to play and it still acts like a handheld PC that I can use beyond gaming. I just have so many gadgets, I want to spread the usage for all of them. I only brought three gadgets with me today: iPhone SE, Galaxy Z Flip 3, & Switch Lite. Maybe tomorrow, I swap Flip 3 and Switch Lite for my Razr 5G and Steam Deck.
Steam Deck isn’t perfect and it does have outdated hardware that’s not comparable the Windows PC handhelds with Z1 Extreme. But it’s fairly comfortable to game on, Valve is a more reputable brand than Asus and Lenovo, has great support, and it caters to most of my gaming needs.
    1. Valve Steam Deck
    2. Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3
    3. Motorola Razr 5G
    4. Sony PS Vita
    5. Google Pixel 3
    6. Apple iPhone SE ‘22 (my daily driver)
    7. Nintendo Switch Lite
    8. Essential PH-1
^ All 8 are great. But it’s tough to give them a fair amount of daily or weekly usage. I also have a modded PSP I didn’t list. It’s tough juggling between 8 different devices. At least 5 or 6 of them will barely be used. My foldable flips are my favorite phones ever and they were barely turned on 3 days ago. My Flip 3 played all of The Last Dance (2020) and now I’m listening to Air (2023) being a big Jordan fan.
I’m thinking like Julien. I love my gadgets but I want to use the least amount of them. But it’s great to have options if you do get bored with them. Perhaps those options can also be a detriment? Having too many games and we don’t have any time to play them. It’s not like the 90s where we had 5-6 games and we would play all of them for months. Now we have every game we ever wanted and we still can’t find the time to play them.

I think this video made me really think about that statement of “pick 2” and I went in a similar thought to what you mentioned at the end with your life, being able to balance things so it’s more than just picking two. I think that’s what I think of the steam deck, it’s a balance, just like a balance in life you may have responsibilities but you find time for things maybe your not getting as much sleep as you could but your not neglecting your sleep, or maybe some days you do need to neglect your sleep especially as a parent. But it’s about being flexible and tending to your family and your personal needs. And so I see the steam deck as something that is not the best at anything, not as good as the dock/undock as the switch, not as powerful as other handhelds, and maybe it also doesn’t have as good of battery as some emulator handheld devices, but it’s the flexibility to do everything. Not the best at everything, but does everything well enough that you’re not losing out completely on any one thing. And I think that’s a good metaphor for how we need to live life, find that balance so you can do all the things you want to

Here's what Im saying: people bring up the Ally for its performance...which is wild....because if that performance only lasts an hour, what is the point? Id rather go with the steam deck that can handle most things, all be it with some limited draw backs (im a switch guy, Drawbacks for platform performance has been my biggest concession with that system) so I do not mind at all. Steam Deck OLED is hands down the best system I have owned within the past decade. I haven't touched my other consoles in months.

    • @johnmurphy5106
      @johnmurphy5106 Před 24 dny +1

Well for one the form factor and the actual ability to play is the point vs it not being playable at all which is what you get with the Steamdeck. If you are playing a high performant game you are plugged in vs not having that option AT ALL with the steam deck.
The other point is all the games you do play perform better as well.
The other point is on the low performance games i get 4 hours.
I have both the steamdeck and rog ....and i pick up the ROG most all the time simply because the software got better over the last 6 months and it plays everything that steam does better and it plays everything the steam doesn't. With the Rog Ally "X" coming out with battery life that is more than double ....sorry it will be the best handheld PC system.
