Dirt Surf Ready | Value Bike Field Test: Specialized Status Review

- When Specialized first released the Status, it was something of an enigma, only available to select shops and rarely seen in the wild. Over time though, the Status 140 and 160 have become more and more common sights, especially in places with steep and jump-filled terrain like the Northwest.

Every 15 year old that has the status can do like 30 ft gaps here in my town.
Same where i live its the teenage ripper bike of choice.
And me! ✋🏻
Bentonville?
Been riding this for 2 years now, absolute Joy on Jumps, big berms, steep terrain etc, Uphill is an absolute workout though
Yup. Built one last year. Didn't realize how heavy it felt until I spent some time on my HT then went back to the Status. only a 3 lb difference, but it pedals like thats a 15 lb difference. So on top of being a fun bike it's also really good for fitness.
Its a good bike, but god it hates to climb... I've been riding it for 8 months and finally am deciding to swap it out for something that can climb way faster but can shred just as well
@@PureRidingdo you have any bikes that could do that for the same price range or a bit more expensive?
@tady3012 There are a few. 2 that pop to mind are the norco sight and norco optic. The a1 sight is 3500, I believe, and the optic is carbon and 3k on sale. The sight is all mountain while the optic is a short travel trail. Even though the optic is 140/125 I have heard it performs just as good as most enduros if your decent at picking lines
@@PureRiding that’s like 2 times more expensive
love how hard it is for you guys to admit when a bike is ‘fun’. Kaz especially!
Because they are eletist snobs?
As a dad who's gotta buy 6 bikes every time my kid sizes up, we are so thankful for the Status! He was coming from a Mythique VRX, another PB value pick from a couple of years ago.
I have the 140 and it absolutely shreds any feature. One thing I found was that I would have to pedal more then any one else when hitting the bike park lines or simply trying to keep my speed on flatter sections because of the grippy butcher tire combo, so I got a maxxis aggressor in the rear and it was a game changer, it climbed much better and had a major difference in rolling capability while still having all the grip in the rear.
about time! Thank you for a proper review & vindicating my thoughts on it! You guys rock! I own a status 160 its a great bike, but not for everyone!
Agreed. I got mine a year ago (extremely) lightly used for $2000, tossed a GX drivetrain on it, and I absolutely love it. It can feel like a lot of bike on mellow trails, but that isn’t what I bought it for. It makes my favorite trails more fun
Absolutely love mine. Total North Shore ride. Fireroad climbs and party down. It is reachy though, find myself having to focus on front end weighting, maybe should have sized down but it's still totally fun. Wheelies, manuals, bonks and whips on everything.
Contemplating putting my SLX brakes on it, though. I'm still undecided on the Code feel. They work...but it doesn't feel like they will. No confidence after multiple bleeds.
I’ve been on this bike more than a year! Fair review. I find it climbs much better than the other bikes I ride… P3, Demo 7. Took some getting used to for the weird geometry, but once you figure it out, it’s a blast!
Lol, I would hope it climbs better than a DirtJumper/Slalom bike and a DH rig....
Great informative reviews always.
I have status 140. What a bike if you like aggressive descend and i find it climbs well if you keep weight a little bit further forward than you normally do on my hardtail. Can't wait to take it to a bike park.
Spot on. Hog on the climbs, washy on the flats, blast at the jump park and descents. Still a great bike for $3k. And will run a 29er on the rear if you want a good all around bike that climbs a bit better.
Thank you!
Had a ton of spare parts so I got a frame and built it up. The brakes I had aren’t working for me, and honestly what I put into it almost equaled just buying this full build so I’m wishing I just got the full build. But the thing is a super fun bike, I use it for racing but I’m not top of my class. It’s stable, tough, and definitely capable of taking a beating
I have had this bike for a few months now. I have taken it in easy Trail rides, and I took it to a bike park last week. The bike is s little challenging to climb, but it does ok. Downhill and jumping is where this bike comes to life. Riding the bike park, the more I threw at this bike, it asked for more.overall, i am happy with the purchase. As a side note, i bought the bike New for $1,500, which was a steal.
I went from a Stumpy to a Status for a bit more capability without breaking the bank for an Enduro... In Phoenix, AZ This bike rides great! Very capable and fast on the downhill. Feels like you can ride the steepest of features confidently. On trail rides it is a bit extreme like they said. You have to pay attention to it a lot, and that makes longer trail rides less comfortable. I really like the way it climbs technical features. Winches right up on the back tire, and very forgiving. Not a very efficient bike, but extremely capable and confident when you get to the fun stuff!
Pretty spot on review. I think the term for this bike is "mini-freeride"
I run a 140 with a 150 fork its a blast and has only marginally tamer geo. Definitely prefer 165 cranks, high mode and a different drivetrain. I dont really see the downsides to running either 140 or 160 as a enduro rig if you take them as a big day on the bike pedalling with friends.
from super slack to UBER super slack 😂
I agree with the conclusion that it would be great as a second bike for someone who has a more balanced trail bike, for when you want to go bigger (same reason I have a Process 165 in addition to my 5010, the 165 climbs like garbage, but shreds on the way down).
You guys mentione this bike wheelies well. How would you rank all the rest of the bikes in how well they take to wheelies - this essential trail feel category is hardly ever mentioned.
I went to change my flip chip to the high setting but it was already in that mode. Major bummer but i just got 165mm cranks and it is fine.
I picked up one of these quite cheap. I like it
Great review, relaxed talk and in depth enough
, Keep them coming. Cheers from Amsterdam
Converted my fully custom status 140 to full 27.5 with 150 up front. Bike park ripper.
I tried 160mm 27.5 fork and that was a blast. Bumped my 36 to 150 with the same idea. 140 is a sleeper bike. That mod you've done puts the geo into transition scout territory at lower cost. That's kinda what drew me to the 140.
@@aaronblonden6774I wish the 140 was in stock
@slcwhere1534 I did frame only and it was definitely worth it to pick my stuff. Some was spendier. I had a miss matched mullet wheel set and a fox 36 performance elite available so figured why not. I constantly rob parts from my hardtails but never intend on it.
Just about to buy my second frame after I broke my first. Love the bike
Me being a tall and light rider the rear biased helps me keep grip on the rear while still keeping the front down. On long rear end bikes I spin out or wheelie. But I’m an aggressive rider and trials and Moto background
How tall are you? Is 29 in the front and 27.5 in the rear with it on this one?
Got this on sale and it's awesome. But yeah, kinda sucks on the uphill and if you're not doing a lot of downhill. Still great fun though. I would stick with a smaller size unless you're doing big downhill stuff. The larger sizes for your height are going to be more of a reach but should be more stable. At least that's what Specialized says.
Wow yall post this while I'm actively trying to save the money for the frame while it's on sale 😂 I can't lie, I even made a gofundme to try to get it 😅
hi there - what did you mean the Status is "by Specialized direct-to-consumer" brand? Which is this brand? Or I get it wrong?
It climbed better than my Canyon Spectral. Awesome budget bike
What year is the Spectral?
@@hotdealwire 2020
Im curious if they tweak the front to more conservative degree that would a must to see
Always Henry! Please! Love it! Cheers from Bavaria
Fair.
interesting how you say, its a nische bike. To me ist a pretty sweet aproach by a top end brand to make the sport more available.
It's difficult to read the red geometry numbers
I love mine. Definitely takes getting used to but actually climbs pretty well.
It would be helpful if you would tell us your height when you are referring to your height.
Ive just ordered this bike, arrives tomorrow. Im an extremely good climbing (without trying to suck myself off) but i come from road riding and XC riding. So im interested to know how bad you make the climbing out to be 😂.
best bike ever. Chuck a 180mm fork and 27.5 wheel on the front and its even better
You can run a 200mm dh fork with a 27.5 front wheel on this
You can run a 200mm dh fork with a 27.5 front wheel on this
@@jordancastle9995 no you cannot lmao
The habit is a 140/130 29er trail bike
Is it too slack if you leave the 29? Or perfect for bike park?
I almost bought this but decided to buy stumpjumper evo alloy frame on sale for $1300 and build that instead.
The rear chains stay is 8mm shorter than commencal meta is it really that noticeable?
great bike for the money
This bike and a polygon D6 look so much alike
That’s a pretty spot on comparison even down to the seat tube gusset and rear shock gusset on the frames 😂
Would this bike be ideal for roads. Im not really an extreme biker but really like the look of it
Get a ht mail stick some quick tyres on it be a lot better for roads, plus it'll still do the trails
Is it too slack? My only complaint is the long front. I think 🤔 Marin alpine trail is better allrounder and status is steeper park, jumps bike
Dude that price is RIDONKULOUS for the specs on this.
What's crazy? Is these frames are $650 brand new.. well. They were.. they're back up to 850 now
paid 700 on black Friday I think all told I have 2700 in the build with one of my old forks. but I didn't skimp anywhere.
I bought a stumpjumper evo alloy frame for $1300 after shipping. IMO it is the best aluminum frame you can get for the price. The adjustable geo is great.
Now the frame is 411$
It is the perfect bike for Trestle bike park! Upgrades:
Envy M9 carbon handlebars
Truvativ stem
Deity flat pedals
DT Swiss FR541 rear wheel
DT Swiss 350 hub
GX derailer
Dario Di-JOOL-Eee-O ✊
$800 for a frame and a garage full of take off parts, I think this thing would be perfect for the 4 times a year I hit the lift chair parks.
Firebird!!!!
I built one of these (140) for my girlfriend because they blew out the framesets on black Friday and it felt weird to me. Not bad just weird.
The Valley Girl vocal fry on the guy in the right…😬
So it's a great cheap bike for bike parks?
Quando a specialized vai retirar esse "apêndice" da suspensão! 😕😕😕
Commencal Meta TR when?
its always been a Park bike, but can be purposed for enduro. I wonder if it would be better as a full 27.5
I got an extra 27.5 front wheel for my trail days and kept the 29 for park rides. It's more nimble, easier climber, and just loads of fun.
The BB would get even lower. If your climbs have roots or rocks, I'd say don't do it
@@SnootchieBootchies27 I measured the BB height at 13.5 inches or 343, hence, 338 on low and mullet. However, somehow I still had pedal strikes where I didn't on a mullet. I have to be careful.
@@SnootchieBootchies27 Not saying that someone should be running 27.5 front and changin geo.
I just think that if you are going to go back to making a 'freeride' bike, which this essentially is... with this type of travel, you could go full 27.5 to make it more of a jibber/poppy slopestyle sender.
@@vrwgq3q ah.
The "Eistetus"
I’m glad I didn’t jump the gun and get this bike
Does anyone out there ride an S1 (xs) size Status? I'm curious to know if the shorter reach would negate most of the cons mentioned in this review.
Depends how you ride. I prefer stability downhill so I went with an S3 instead of an S2. I have the Status 140 though.
@@fantomex619 right, that's smart. Do you lose traction on the front tire in simi-flat turns? I'm looking to get a 140 also.
I’m 172cm and love the S1 Status
@@RvanD1313 😎 when climbing, does the shorter reach work well with the extra short 426mm chain stay length? Like, does it feel like a "normal" trail/enduro bike or does the front end float around like @pinkbike says it does? I'm a smaller rider too like you. Im about 168cm... I'm short on $$$ too and I want a mixed wheel set up. 😂 that's why I'm so interested in the Status.
En mi pais Peru no baja precio de 4000 dolares.
In german we say "Das teil tretet sich hoch wie ein Sack Schrauben"
Its for groms . Spec did ZERO advertising of this bike because they wanted it to go 'viral on the gram' that says it all really.
So, could this be a bike park bike, or not burly enough?
Many use it as such. Whistler is pretty common to see the status.
My brother has one and uses it for park. I would say yes, it's a good park bike but buy the frame instead of the full bike, (frames are on sale for $850) and upfork the bike to 170mm or 180mm. Also eventually you might want to switch to a dpx2 shock because rougher riders will blow through the 160mm of rear travel fairly easily.
You could take it to a bike park and have a very fun time for sure. If you're riding park day in day out probably worth getting a DH rig
#whereislevy
The mumbling kills me..
geo numbers graphics are dogs ballz
“Surfboard”? Yeah, a big, foam, longboard.
yeah right, those are super flickable!
stick to your overly long and expensive ship matey boy 😂
Definitely horses for courses. Seen every Status owned locally go up for sale. If you don’t have elevation and all your climbs are technical, it seems to not be a keeper.
Bring back mike Levy.
Apart from the shit NX it's great value for a Spesh.
Oh wow, look, a specialized Ripmo Af. Neato...
Ripmo is 29“
Ripmos look like women's bikes with all the tubing curves and bends.
Geo isn't even close to the same. Or suspension platform but yeah. It's basically a ripmo AF.
It’s a totally different bike, lol
@@KYMXRacer okay, it just seemed to me to occupy a similar place in the eco system, but its whatever.
the guy with glasses speaks and sounds like he has a problem with his voice or wants to take the full attention lol
Dario could try limiting his vocal fry a bit, because these videos are unbearable to watch with so much of it.
Dario babbles far too often. "Um, like, um, it's like uh".
Dario says the bike is niche, Kaz says the bike is nitch. Whos right? Whos wrong? You decide…
you had to change the spelling to write nitch. end of.
