From Wraths to Eternals, Gods have had a wild history in Magic: The Gathering. Who got here first? Who will be standing last? And what's the difference between and Avatar, a God, and a Demigod, anyway?

Hey everyone! Thanks for stopping by to hear about the stories behind God cards in Magic. I just wanted to address some of the most common questions I'm seeing in the comments here:
1. "Your audio is bad and you should feel bad." Yes, noted. Please remember, I'm doing this from home, in a little study that I'm converting to a studio. This week, I moved all my furniture (computer desks, storage cabinets, couch, everything) around so that my back would be to the window, since so many people had asked for a solid background rather than seeing the room behind me. It turns out, you cannot please everyone, and now the audio has taken a dip as my voice is echoing off all the haphazardly arranged items just out of view of the camera. I will keep working on it, but in the meantime any further comments about audio quality will be deleted. It's not that they aren't valid feedback - it's just that they are not adding anything new to the conversation at this point. As always, I appreciate your patience as I continue to level up my production capabilities for this show :-)
2. "You forgot (card that isn't a God but would have fit in here)" Yes, I had to leave out a lot of stuff. I try to keep these videos 15 to 20 minutes long, and this was already over that with everything I did include. Magic is a huge game with a vast history. The goal of Magic Arcanum is to provide enough context so that new players especially are not overwhelmed or left completely in the dark with what's happening in current sets. For episodes that are "a history" of a topic, I do try and widen the scope a bit, but don't want to stray too far from the thesis of the show.
3. "Your design for Norse Gods would break the game!" Rosewater has expressed a desire to push the envelope, and we know the Un Sets have been a testing ground for new ideas. It's possible the gods will start in their own sort of mini-deck (like Contraptions) or need to augment themselves onto existing cards. I didn't spend hours playtesting this idea. I just wanted to capture the gods popping in to mess with people's lives, then leaving again. There are probably countless better ways to do it, but I'm an entertainer, not a member of WotC R&D...at least not yet :-)
4. "Your face is punchable and your mustache is ugly"
Can't believe some people post such nasty things. You're doing a great job and I love all your content. Can't wait to see your channel grow in quality and content over time. Keep up the great work! Don't let the CZcams comments get you down :)
Hi Ryan! Don't listen to douchebags talking s*** about your moustache - it looks great!
As to your sound issues: there's a free software called Audacity you can use to edit your sound files and make them sound professional - it's pretty easy to learn and there a lots of tutorials on youtube. Keep on with the good work!
Surprised you didn’t give the Kami an honorable mention or something.
Hey Ryan, next time a douchebag or troll starts in on ya, just remember these "Godly" words of wisdom;
"Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is that little voice at the beginning of the day that says: Today i will be Great."
You missed the Kami
The "Forgotten Gods" of Ravnica are the Nephilim, the first 4 colored cards. They show up in the first Ravnica Block
Any proof of that? It's a solid theory.
Proof? That's what they are. They predate the god subtype but that's what the story directly was.
@@Dracinard
czcams.com/video/PSldCQdQXbk/video.html this was posted in Dec 14 2015
Yeah, I know what the Nephilim are. I mean, any proof that they're what the Priest of Forgotten Gods worship?
. . . apparently you didn't watch the video
Kruphix is my boy, he's straight chilling while maintaining constant existential dread, and that is just so relatable.
Strongest god has to be Nylea, she does the ultimate powermove by having a bow, being gigantic and flying in the sky, yet she decides not to be able to attack flying creatures.
By far my favorite of all the gods
And you'd think a bow would give you first strike
Tbh, the Gods if Theros should all have reach from their Colossal Size.
This sounds like it was recorded in Emrakuls prison moon.
You're not wrong.
@Magic Arcanum And yet, you’re still the best mtg lore channel out there! Keep up the great content!
From a lore standpoint, Hazoret. She doesn’t need to rely on devotion and outlasted every other god on Amonkhet, including the God-Pharaoh and is an absolute powerhouse as Ixalan Standard proved. The only possible contender would be Ilharg, and we don’t know enough about the boar god(which is almost as cool a creature type as Bird Wizard) to decide which one possesses more raw power.
Will Morand there could be other gods on Amonkhet. We know as much as it’s people. That is, nothing.
Hazoret's survival is more down to her tenacity and cunning than raw power, at least from my perspective. She needed mortal assistance to stop the Scorpion God in Hour of Devastation, after all.
Her name was in one of the best mono-Red aggro decks I have ever seen: Hazo-red
BloodiedShingle she got assistant from two planewalkers ...
oktrea and kefnet death was pride and standing their ground against Scorpion and locus .
Oktrea said she agreed she would die but couldn’t let the people die for her and must save them much as possible , Kefnet took the strength in numbers approach staying with his sister .
Rhonas died cause of Pride and strength , he beat the crap out of scorpion but thinking the foe was dead , he started to brag and rally everyone to him. Instead he would put the spear into the scorpion head and then war cry speech .
Bontu death was a easy ,own stupidity mixed with Greed and sense of power.
All the gods died or lived in ways that suited their personality
I could argue for Kruphix, with the power to enact "The Silence" and all (imagine him shutting all the Gods inside Nyx and watching them get weaker and weaker due to lack of devotion... all out of spite because they banned his prophet ;) )
HAIL THE RAZE BOAR HE WILL GRIND THIS CITY TO DUST
George Norwood I hope the boar will grind me into dust.
Ilharg!!!!!
FOR THE GRUUL CLANS
17:50 can’t believe you invented companion
Yeah I got pretty close. Was focused on game-state being the trigger though, rather than deck composition.
Magic Arcanum I think you can count this as a win
Magic Arcanum id argue that with Companion existing, they might very much go into the direction you thought of, it would very much be fitting for gods
"Ugin locks away Nicol Bolas forever" let's see how long that forever lasts. I sincerely hope it is forever because I am so tired of him but I'm sure Wizards will take him out of the drawer eventually.
Ashiok already invade the meditation real where Ugin and Bolas are and we don't know what happened to the twin elder Dragons.
Oh shut up Lucas, nicol bolas is the best, I'm so tired of people like YOU!
I bet they'll take him out once the phyrexians meld with the eldrazi
@@supremeverdict359 actually, that didn't happen in the story. Just on the cards.
This entire time when you refer to ‘Nicole’ you’ve been secretly talking about bolas. I know it’s true you can’t escape the truth, there’s a dragon behind that camera.
This man called companions three months early. Props
Thank you so much for making this video! As far as the god that I think is the most powerful, I'm biased towards Kruphix. As a card it's very strong granting no max hand size and keeping all of your extra mana around, very blue and green. Lore wise Kruphix is cool because he know literally everything that everyone on Theros knows, which means the planeswalkers that have been there have provided him with a lot of knowledge. Ajani, Elspeth, and Ashiok have all been to other planes before going to Theros, letting Kruphix know about the Phyrexians, Eldrazi, Alara, War of the Spark/Ravnica, and a few other planes and events. It is very likely that Calix and/or Elspeth will return to Theros in the future. Elspeth to see Daxos and Calix to see Klothys, this means Kruphix will keep learning more. Also on the flavor tezt of Return to Nature from THB Kruphix apparently has some ability to see the future. Once again thank you so much for making this video!
Also: Arduel's bloodfast on the flipside talks about the Bat God of Night on Ixalan. Great video as always and I loved the theory of the Norse gods!
That was azor, and while being powerful he’s not a god
@@jeannebouwman1970 Not sure you read the card correctly..it definitely spoke of the bat god on the flipside of Temple of Aclazotz
@@seasnek7024 yes, and said bat God was later revealed to be azor
A video on the avatars of MTG definitely sounds interesting.
Jon Hamm as Heliod is surprisingly perfect.
Ever heard of overgods?
In D&D on Toril, for example, there's Ao, the "boss" of the other deities. No belief or worship required for power. He is beyond that.
Two possible inclusions in this category, for MtG, *may* be:
Gaea (Dominaria), and
Nyx (Theros).
I don't think they're card-able. In other words, truly immortal. In D&D terminology, players would say: "they don't have stats, you can't kill them."
What does everyone else think about my hypothesis?
Nyx is a place more than an entity, but other planes do have "world souls." Nissa is pretty good at talking to them, actually, and is friends with Zendikar (like, the entire plane itself.)
The design of the "norse" gods you're proposing is extremely risky, there'd be no reason not to put every single one of them in your deck, especially if they take up deck slots.
No idea who the strongest god is but my two favourite gods are the dimir ones since I have both as commanders for decks of mine. Phenax especially holds a special place since his deck was the first I put together completely on my own, without a precon base.
Phenax was my first edh deck too! And as a commander, Scarab (or maybe Karametra) is definitely ludicrous.
@@kingginger3335 I agree, if anything the Norse Gods are canonically way more human and way more proactive than just about any other pantheon. I can see them actually lacking the standard indestructibility of MTG gods (as they are not immortal, just live a very long time with that time being supplemented with apples of immortality) or any sort of "active only if" clause in exchange for having a much greater presence on board.
I thought of Yugiohs extra deck 💀
@@silentknight9356 Agreed, it would behave pretty much exactly like the yu-gi-oh extra deck.
Note though that we already have something similar in mtg - the contraptions from unstable have their own separate deck.
I really like certain things
Hey, thanks to all y'all making these. I really enjoy the content. I've been playing MTG since '95 and really thoroughly enjoy the lore of the game. It's nice to see the lore presented in such a nice clean way. Appreciate the channel, good day.
While the Scorpion God's kill-count is quite impressive, I'd say that Ilharg is the mightiest of all the Gods-- he was the only one who could challenge Ravnica itself, the greatest money-making force in all of Magic
I'm ready for STORYTIME!
Way to call Companions before Ikoria
Honestly? I'm thinking Erebos. After all, everyone dies...apparently, thanks to Elspeth, even Gods.
Liliana would agree with you based off the flavor text of the card "Rise of the forgotten realms" goes like this. "For every living person there are generation of dead. Which realm would you rather rule?"
Those are some sick predictions for future Norse gods. I could see those being awesome
They'll 100% do it eventually - I bet it'll be sick.
Seems kinda busted, I mean, free card advantage for no mana? They start out exiled or in the command zone? So you could run them even if you don't intend on using them and start with a 56 or 52 card deck.
@@cryosen well they would have to balance them around certain requirements. Like they would be "free" in terms of mana but you would have to like counter spells or something. I see it as fairly similar to something like the hideaway lands. I would also assume that maybe you could only run one copy of a god, and probably only like a maximum number of them that you can have start in exile or wherever.
@@levithompson1161 Even if you can only run one copy, every deck in any format where they're legal would run them even if they can't play them, just to have a lesser amount of cards in the deck, which is objectively better.
Not saying that it's not a cool idea, it just needs a lot of work, and if yugioh is an example, having cards available outside your hand is a big deal.
@@cryosen Yeah the whole "starting in play or similar" is busted beyond belief and would never happen. But the idea of them "popping" in and out of existence temporarily whenever certain conditions are met sounds really fun.
you killed me with "Putting live lobsters in her hair that this roll would require..."
Wasn't Yawgmoth technically a god while on Phyrexia?
Do we have a video on the souls of planes or something for the Ur dragon and Arahbo?
As for favorite god, as a real life atheist I like both the eldrazi and New Phyrexia much more than the gods as protrayed on theros or amonketh :p
I've always loved how Heliod is named after Helios, normally a very chill and easy going God but given the personality of Zeus. The only thing we were missing was the copious amounts of demigod children running around with daddy issues
Best Mtg lore channel - so in depth
You were right about casting creatures outside your deck, although not related to kaldheim.
You were also right about kaldheim. Congrats.
I'd like to mention that this came out before we knew much of anything about Ikoria, and this brilliant lore mage almost perfectly calls how companions worked. Not Norse Gods, but not a bad representation of the mechanic. Bravo, you mustachioed maestro!
17:40...the prophetic wisdom of the mustache wins again.
The story of amonkhet is my favorite. Just how everyone believes that they are working to become better for their master, then he returns and turns on them. I loved the theme and cards too!
Gonna be honest was distracted by your shadow entourage for a lil bit (2 shadows), but then your "mustache minute" voice brought me back to attention.
John Hamm and Cillian Murphy are perfect. Netflix, take notes for future projects!
It looks like you're getting set up step by step, so just so you know, I had to raise my sound output a lot for this video.
I had no disturbance, headphones, in my room, and among other video, this one had a low mix.
About North mythology, I think sacrifices are a thing, or rather Offerings. And there attendance to combat would be more stated in a capricious way.
"At the beginning of your combat phase, tap a white creature you control or tap this"
"At the beginning of your combat phase, pay 1G or tap this"
"At the beginning of your combat phase, sacrifice a creature or tap this"
"At the beginning of your combat phase, discard a card or tap this"
I'm a very devoted Red&White player, so naturally Iroas, Purphoros and Heliod are my favourites of the Theros gods. Iroas served as the Commander for one of the first EDH decks I ever made and I've gradually iterated on it over time as new cards turn up to slip into the deck. It's still one of my favourite decks to run.
Still love the content but the mic sounded a bit weird this time. Keep up the good work !
Yeah I moved all my furniture around so I could put my back to that window and now my voice is echoing off some office cabinets and stuff. I'm going to fix it. We've gotten better with every video and we're not stopping now :-)

I dig the backdrop/location Ryan!
My day is always made better with a little bit of storytime!
Keep it up buddy, happy to support you and share the videos.
Amazing Ryan, I collect all the God cards and getting some insight about their characteristics and lore was certainly very interesting!
I'm already very excited about a norse plane like Kaldheim (had hoped that we get to it this year instead of Theros), and hearing about your take on future Gods and their mechanics has really hyped me up!
And this was maybe the best moustache minute yet! :D
Thank you loremage, keep your stories coming!
Casting the gods was a fun touch. Thanks for the vid. Love the lore deep dives.
So, end of July now like 5 months later and rumor has just risen that the set after Zendikar Rising...will be based around norse mythology...well done sir!
I always love hearing these storys. Thanks for making them, Ryan and Nicole!
I don't even play Magic anymore, but I love the Lore and I love this channel!
Surprisingly on-point predictions, especially since it's from before we knew much about ikoria
The mustache moments are great. Awesome story telling.
Pls make progenisus video.
Great video as always
(Edit)
Also with your norse idea:
Odin like card: white, blue, green. Probably scry 5 times in a single turn, etb is return 2 creatures to your field, they become vigalince angels with flying along with their other abilities .
Tap: add one creature from your deck to your hand
Thor like card: red, blue, black. Deal 5 noncombant based damage. Etb is deal 2 damage to all creatures your opponent controls. Target creature you control get +2/+2, and return a target equipment from the graveyard to the battlefield
Tap: add one artifact from your deck to your hand
Loki like card: make your opponent discard 5 cards in a single turn. Etb is return 2 instants or sorcerys to your deck, and shuffle your library. All creatures you control have hexproof
Tap: add one instant from your deck to your hand
Thanks for changing the background ryan! I hope you dont take the feedback some of us give too personally! I just want to see you achieve the quality you used to have on tcgplayer and watch you prosper. Great content as always ❤️
I'm so happy I've stumbled across your channel. That story about the legendary artifacts and the unfortunate "Wear and tear" was seriously so relatable and I loved how you handled it. I'm also a huge fan of the "Moustache Minute", I really appreciate how the video in general is a ton of research, but moustache minute is the PERFECT segue into opinions and fun facts. My favourite of which is when you pick real actors to play MTG characters. This is a fantastic channel and I look forward to watching further.
I LOVE the mechanic you suggested for the norse gods!
The wear and tear but had me rolling. Thanks for the video, quality as always!
Your Outro music somehow starts like the Doctor Who theme, I'm always waiting for the "uuu--iiiiii---oooo" to kick in :D however, keep up the good work, your videos are simply the best lore videos out there!
2:37 I'd love to see a video on the different Avatars in Magic, but also maybe delve into other "Manifestation" creatures, like how Avatars are sometimes described as embodiment of ideas and concepts, there are also things like Incarnations (like "Genesis"), the Archons, Spirits (the kamigawa ones specifically), etc. Many different words for beings who are essentially "manifestations" of something or other.
You forgot about all the cards in early magic that reference Svyelun. You have let down all merfolk everywhere, and have labeled yourself an enemy of the sea.
Oh boy, I love the paper sound on your video openings.
17:20 Look like we're going to see Kaldheim as the first standard set next year.
I like the idea of a God that chills in exile and reappears when you meet its conditions, but starting the game from that position is liable to break in all sorts of ways, most notably by not requiring you to play the colors of the gods. I think it's more likely that we see designs like the Titans - gods that are cast, enter the battlefield with an effect, then exile themselves until a condition is met, upon which they return (either temporarily or permanently).
Here's some rough drafts: Odin is blue and draws a card, then returns when you draw two/three or more cards in one turn. Loki is black and drains your opponent for 1, then returns when your opponents loses 2/3/4 or more life in one turn. Frygg is green and Explores, then returns when you have six/seven lands on the battlefield. Tyr is white and makes a 1/1 Soldier, then returns when you attack with three/four or more creatures. Thor is red and Shocks/Bolts, then returns when you deal noncombat damage two/three times in one turn.
Ullamog's cast trigger can get rid of them all I believe. And graveyard hate as well.
Great History and forecast of the MTG Gods. Thank you. I really want to see the Norse plane now! love the choices for the actors to play the Theros Gods. :)
Would love to see an updated version of this with the Kaldheim Gods
For the eventual next Theros set, I would love it if something(s) big (one of the bigs things mentioned in the video) invade Theros and because of that Heliod is horribly hurt, having the other Gods help to save their followers, then having Heliod realize he can't do it alone and together, they eviscerate the threat. Then having all Gods welcome and such. It would be good character development and have great multi and mono colored cards.
Kruphix is definitely my favourite. But i do have a soft spot for Phenax, Pharika and Scarab God though as well.
Ryan could u make videos with top 10s based on your opinion? Talking mostly about lore related ones like favourite/least favourite characters/planeswalkers, characters that should have been cards but didn't make the cut or most dangerous planes etc? Love your videos mate and i would love to see more
Duuuuude, that Erebos casting was LIT
100% agree
The way you describe the new potential gods sound like playing with an extra zone like in yugioh
I can't believe you called the Companion mechanic
Thank you for explaining the lore to us. Reading is fun but can be a job with how much material there is.
i love the idea you have for 'norse' themed gods. it might need some tweaking, but cards that can only come into play when certain conditions are met, sound fun and unique.
11:20 This bit is especially ominous with the recent set reveals! March of the Machine, most likely featuring Phyrexians as antagonists, is going to take place on multiple planes - Theros included!
Imo the most powerful god will be Omnath when he will be finally able to eat the whole Zendikar plane. I can't wait to see a card called Omnath locus of Zendikar!
Do you think he'll get black or white mana next?
@@jkk6435 Probably both - Wizards seems to shy away from 4-color legends other than Commander 2016. But I will like to see a blackless Omnath.
My man got the timing of Kaldheim and the companion mechanic. Legend.
17:24
Concept:
Five gods, one of any color.
Each cares about one of the major card types. E. g. White could be Enchantment related.
We get Tribal Artifacts which have a enter the battlefield trigger and transform into mighty gods, when there are enough counters on them. You get the counters by casting spells of the type. The gods themselve have synergies with the type.
Just a tiny bit of critique if you want. The recording is a bit echoey. Aside from that, the vid is great!
I like this pseudo-Suspend-like idea you have for MtG Norse god creature cards. It sort of blends in commander rules into a regular format.
I like the new background. Better than the classic room
Thank you for great video! Keep up the amazing work!
Your stories and videos are awesome! I just want to give a tip on the obvious sound quality, if you're recording on a large room (or a room that makes your voice echos a lot) try to put things that could block your voice from going far from the mic. 2 large blankets clipped on stands for both sides could do the work. You'll definitely gain more audiance from that 😏 Cheers for more Arcanum!
Yeah the problem is it's actually a small room with a very high ceiling and it's at the front of our house with a big window so I can't leave a ton of blankets up all the time because that would look silly but I do have some ideas on how to improve the sound situation. It'll be better next time, I promise :-)
3:55 well, they do have "Deus" that means exactly "God" in lots of languages, particularly in my mother language, portuguese.
Henrique Hollanda Andrade Oi,beleza?
no one asked.
You forgot Ixalan gods - Aclazotz and Threefold Sun. While both don't have cards, Aclazotz is depicted in Arguels Blood Fast. Gishath and trio of Avatar Dinos are the avatars of Threefolded Sun and Zacama is the embodiment of it, having three heads and all.
Oh you're right! I totally forgot about them. Good catch!
From a game point perspective I’d say OG Thassa and OG Purphoros for the most powerful gods because OG Purphoros can outright win you the game with a bit of luck and sees some of the most play in commander, where as OG Thassa comes out early for 3 mana and gives you a repeated scry every turn plus for only 2 mana makes anyone on your team unblockable. Then an honorable mention for God-Eternal Kefnet because of infinite turns, but only if you have a turn card in addition to repeatable Brainstorm like effect such as JtMS, Scroll Rack, or Isochron Scepter and Brainstorm.
I’ve always thought it would be interesting to explain game mechanics in a lore perspective. Like how drawing cards is gaining knowledge, but I wouldn’t know what the difference for milling and discarding would be.
A video on that would be amazing!
That's a really interesting suggestion. I'll add it to my list!
Did someone say Mill vs. Discard? Cough, Spice8Rack, Cough
It should be noted that basically all of the legendary spirits in Kamigawa blocks are fashioned after higher and lower Shinto gods. That Which Was Taken also references a god being held prisoner by humans.
It's a good thing you had a better suggestion for Erebos because I was just about to say "Willem DaFoe" while I watched this
Ayli: Just a few more steps...
Jace: Can you please just tell me why you made me slather myself in barbecue sauce?
I know im late but i just had an interesting idea for a new history themed set. A Roman/Christian plane. Start on a plane built in a day. Similar to theros with many gods for different factions only there is a new god that called "The One" who's followers exterminate then old gods followers and converts them. They could also add an interesting twist that "The One" creates an almost equal evil counterpart that corrupts the followers of "The One".
Interesting thing about Erebos is he was the one responsible for Gideon, AKA Kytheon, igniting his planeswalker spark when Gideon chucked Helios' spear at him and Erebos redirected it back at him killing a bunch of Gideon's friends.
Thassa, first print had scry and she gives unlockable. Plus, " Release the Kraken!" LOL
Kruphix, God of Horizons is the one I'm devoted to. I know it's creature card is not the best, but his status and servants, makes me think he's more powerfull in universe than that.
In any case, the gods of Theros are more powerfull than the gods in Amnkeh, as long as their actions in the novels and short stories.
But an old Planeswaker is in the same category or even more powerful than that, so it's no wonder that Serra had an church dedicated to her and Sorin could build an pseudo deity in Avacyn.
20:07 I'd recommend Dug Jones. He played Pan in Pan's Labyrinth.
I really love Magic lore & how it plays out in the sets. Great video!
Ryan: In 2 years maybe we’ll see Kaldeheim
Wizards of the coast: Hold my deck
I think a soundproof room would go a long way to increasing the quality of the video, there is a lot of reverb going on here. But the content is great
I'd say Mads Mikkelsen makes for a good Erebos. He's got his cheek bumps and all that PLUS the everlasting expression of not caring for any and every shenanigans happening in the world, just like ones on Erebos
Phenax existed as a human before godhood. It's even mentioned he escaped the underworld and probably one of the first mortals to do so in THB. Wish you spent more time on each God as there's a possibility some of them were actually mortals based on the lore
I say Hazoret she makes a usual negative (having fewer cards) into a positive by dealing damage, and synergizes great with Embalm, Eternalize, and Escape.
Hopefully your Kaldhiem prediction comes true, it's confirmed and pack art looks Thor-y
Yeah the more types something is the more vulnerable it is. That is important for a lot of these cards
Your theory about the Norse Mythology was kinda correct with ikoria, the companion mechanic
His prediction for the norse gods reminds me of companion
Just started watching your channel, thank you for your hart work!!!!
Love, that the prediction towards kaldheim was right :D
Just found your stuff and I am loving it! Just finished bingeing all of it last night, super excited to already see another video!
The wiki also mentions a Cacophony god of cities who was slain by Ephara? Do you know anymore about this because I cant find a card or anything?
P.S. Thankyou for producing my favorite mtg content :)
She was created by Ashiok using the nightmares of Ephara. That's why Cacophony was a mockery of Ephara. But Ephara quickly found and killed her in Nyx
It was a side story from the original Theros lore. That's why Askiok needed Phenax to conceal him from the other gods, as Ryan stated in the video
