Good question. No you do not although a lot of instructors will say you do. The examiner will not mark you down for either option though. As long as you look around before proceeding it’s fine. The things the examiner are assessing you for is; 1. Speed of reaction 2. Completely stopped in a time duration which is achievable for the speed and weather conditions for your vehicle 4. Maintained a straight trajectory 3. Observation safely conducted and pulls away in a safe manner. As long as you do these 4 things, the minimum requirement has been achieved to not get a serious or dangerous fault.
You don’t need to. But if you do it’s fine. The examiner just wants to see a prompt, and harsh stop, without skidding or swerving. But if the ABS kicks in it’s fine. The second thing which is very important is that you look to see it’s safe before you move off again.

So to over simplify it all you do is just basically step on the brake pedal hard??
