I am an aging hippy who (1) was at Woodstock in 1969, (2) saw Janis there but not Pig (I was asleep), but (3) saw the Dead in January 1970 at the Fillmore East, with Pigpen only 10 feet away. I have never seen anyone who was cooler than Pigpen; he was 100 percent feeling. And he and Janis were the greatest performers out of SF because they let the music fill every cell of their body. Turn on Your Lovelight and Let it Shine!

I’m an aging hippie as well. Saw the Grateful Dead in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1970. A great concert that opened with NRPS, followed by Quicksilver Messenger Service and the Grateful Dead closed the show. Best part was an incredibly small audience, which meant we sat on the floor directly in front of the stage. There was probably less than a thousand people in attendance.

I saw the Dead at Philmore East too, possibly in 1970, and Pigpen was only a couple of meters away. A bunch of us were outside the side door and Pigpen wanted to let us in to sit up on the stage, but Security wouldn't allow it. We had tickets for the next night, though.

The two great blues vocalists of the late 1960s, riffing off pure feeling. Mutual feeling. This recording is one of a kind,

My goodness. Two of the greatest rock blues vocalists on the same stage. Never knew this existed. Amazing. Wonderful. Never to be repeated again. What a jewel.

I was repeated! Woodstock was in in August of 1969. PigPen and Janis sang "Lovelight" on July 16, 1970 at the Euphoria Ballroom in San Rafael (Marin County, near SF). The recording is on CZcams and it is even more exciting than this one! czcams.com/video/RmPkgSIkUeM/video.html

In this Grateful Dead song with Janis Joplin; LOVELIGHT in 1969,
I noticed that Janis starts singing at 4:20 minutes on this audio, hummm interesting? I LOVE that The Grateful Dead specialized in longer songs than other bands, like as in the ART of Love Making, THESE MUSICIANS didn't scrimp with their LOVE of MUSIC! ! !

I was at the Fillmore West in SF and saw Janis and Ron sing Lovelight together. I was walking toward the snack bar to get a coke when I was swept backwards by a wave of moving bodies toward the front of the stage. I finally got my bearings and lo and behold!!! There was Pig and Janis hugging and dry humping while they busted out a very fine version of Lovelight. It was truly MAGIC!!!

wow. hard yet easy to imagine the magic that would have been Janis in a full set with the boys. Sub Janis for Janis lite (Donna Jean). Sad Donna Jean gets bashed all too much but she tried and the boys thought she was worthy of being on the bus.

Well, I am in the minority here and I get what people like about this, but I find it went on too long and was kind of self-indulgent. If I was there in person, I would have gotten bored after about 8 or 9 minutes. Maybe you just had to be there. And, I saw Janis live three times before 1969 ( and was wowed by her) and Pigpen once in 1967.
