    I’m taking my Aunty off of this drug. It’s only been a little over a week, but it has caused a dramatic change in her. She no longer tries to make it to the toilet. She will just go in her pants. She doesn’t know where she is. She’s lethargic. All of this in just a short period of time. I never wanted her on any medication because although she surely has dementia, she still knew the very basics of caring for herself and had a good energy level for someone of her age. I’m so mad at myself for letting her doctor talk me into giving it to her.

      There is a term in medicine known as Polypharmacy, Polypharmacy refers to the use of a large number of medications, commonly considered to be the use of five or more. In a population based study, outpatients taking 5 or more medications had an 88% increased risk of experiencing an ADE compared to those who were taking fewer medications. These results are seen especially in older adults.I am a proponent of a non-pharmacological approach to treat underlying medical conditions.Only, if these have been exhausted would I propose medication coupled with other modalities.I hope to do a video on polypharmacy in one of my future videos.

    I take aricept at bedtime and is causing me insomnia.

    • @ThinkYourHealth
      @ThinkYourHealth  Před 3 lety +1

      Aricept can cause insomnia.. Aricept is taken at at night because it can cause irregular or slow heartbeat for some patients, which can cause fainting. Therefore, it is taken at night times so they would be able to sleep through this effect.Please, check with your Doctor.Talk to your Doctor whether you can take it in the morning.He or she knows your medical history as well as medication history and can see if this is no contraindication to changing the timing of Aricept.

    Have YOU had side effects using this drug? Did you know that it slows down your heart rate as a side effect?

    • @goose7574
      @goose7574 Před 4 lety +1

      My mother was just put on this medication on Friday, do I will keep you posted on what happens. Hey doctor is having her take it at night, because of the deceased heart rate, side effect. Evidently it's safer to do that, so people are less likely to feel dizzy, faint, etc., during the day.
      Thank you for doing this video.

    • @ThinkYourHealth
      @ThinkYourHealth  Před 4 lety

      Thank you for your feedback, and I am hoping the medication is of benefit for your mother.We doctors, do sometimes advice to take certain medications at certain times because of the way they work , or and in this case taking the side effect profile into consideration.I have also been a proponent of non-pharmacological approach to treating medical conditions, however, if patients are taking medications, they should be aware of side effects ( at least the most common ones.).In the future I hope to make some videos exploring dementia, polypharmacy amongst other topics. Any other topics which would be of interest to you or your mother?

      In all honesty, anything that can potentially help her.
      Since I lost my father at only 20, I'm just wanting to do whatever I can to help her. I'm not ready to lose her yet.
      😔
      She's going to be having a MRI soon, bloodwork and also seeing a Neurologist, so that's good. She finally has a more pro-active Doctor. Our family doctor for years, didn't really do a good job... And that really stinks, because he's been a family friend for years.
      Fortunately he's retiring, so my mother ended up seeing a new Doctor, and he's awesome!!!

      @@goose7574 , this must be a very difficult time for you.I would advice you reach out to caregiver groups in your area and other associations.As the disease progresses it takes a toll on families. Caregiver burnout is real and is a state of physical, emotional and mental exhaustion.

      Husband DX Young Onset 8/23 had a cardiac arrest 8/19....... Neurologist wanted him to take Aricept... When we questioned the side effects she only mentioned stomach cramps and diarrhea and said if it gets to bad just stop taking and we'll try something else. I question the risks of suddenly stopping and she said there wasn't any...... He declined the prescription, I'm so glad he did!

    Question: Would you prescibe this for a loved one yourself, or do you feel there are better options?

    • @ThinkYourHealth
      @ThinkYourHealth  Před 3 lety +6

      I do prefer non-pharmacological way should always be part of the treatment plan for a loved one going through this terrible disease.This includes(if able): regular exercise( walking should suffice), well balanced diet, good BP control, structure & routine and good sleep hygiene.Co-ordination of services and reaching out to SW, Dementia associations coordination with visiting nurses if appropriate.I would only prescribe the medication early on in the disease weighing in the pros and cons( depending on medical history) and monitoring for side effcts.In my experience as the disease progresses there is less value especially if taking medications becomes problematic.

    Very interesting and honestly I didn't know dementia was treatable with anything. So are these side effects very common or they ''might'' occur?

    • @ThinkYourHealth
      @ThinkYourHealth  Před 4 lety

      Unfortunately, there is no curative treatment for the different types of dementia, in particular Alzheimer's disease.However, if started early in the disease process, in some patients, it can delay the progression of the disease, in particular Alzheimer's disease.For some families this is very meaningful as their loved ones can stay longer at home delaying placement in an assisted living facility or nursing homes.Side effects are reported during trials and post-marketing. For Aricept : (Donezepil) GI side effects are most common such as diarrhea ranging between 5-15%, fainting 2%, loss of appetite 2-8%,, urinary incontinence 2-4 % for example.Heart block and aggressive behaviour were realized post marketing.Consumers should have these conversations with their doctors and decide through shared decision making if a certain medication is right for them.
