Well, all the money he's made from the Tonight Show went straight to the bank, never spent a dime of it. He lives his life, including all his cars and stuff, from money he makes doing about 200 or so standup gigs a year.

I believe Carson was the only one just as classy. Jay always took care of his staff, and he never thought he was better than anyone. Leno is a real person, who came from a real family, not an asshole, not in love with himself, loves his wife, and made me cry about my own dad that I lost when I was 5, you know, I've never met a person that knew him, that didn't go out of they're way to tell me how nice of a person he was, I could never walk in his shoes, sound a lot like Angelo Leno
Jay was a "late in life" child; his mom was around 41 when he was born, his dad was 42 or so. He lost both parents in a two year span circa 1992-94. His older brother died from cancer in 2000 and Jay took over responsibility for his then-teenage nephew.

As great as he's become we'll never hear him brag on himself... what we will hear him say is how great everyone else is... from his showbiz friends to the regular guy off the street who Jay invited to show off their car and make them feel special... on his show Jay Leno's Garage. I think this is what truly makes him great... he brags on everyone elses victory.

WOW! Had tears rolling down my face. (I'm 63 soon to be 64) Dads can be pretty unappreciated! I had a hard working dad with a temper but NEVER hit anyone or even close and my mother was truly a work of art. This made me go back and think of the years he put in to give us a good life. To say i had a horrible father, is an understatement. Growing up in the seventies, many of my friends had good fathers, some policemen, teacher's etc, i always envied them, but growing up the way i did, taught me to be as good a father as i could be, never lost my temper, always handled things in a fair and controlled manner, never berated or beat my boy, like my father had done to me, always encouraged him, for me to disipline him only meant to raise my voice alittle, or use a deeper tone, its amazing how well that works, my son now has a 5 year old boy, and he amazingly uses the same temperment and control i did with him,,,seeing jay talk about his father makes me tear up some, its a beautiful thing to have a good father...

I was one of the viewers who caught these five minutes nearly two decades ago and "There are some people who just know to do the right thing" and his final grieving statement "It's lonely at the top - you have no idea" left an impression. It is the most genuine, heartfelt moment I've ever seen on television -- even more powerful because it came so unexpectedly within his late night comedy show routine.
I grew up in the Carson generation and never failed to watch Johnny every night - it was a family tradition. When Jay took over I only watched the show if there was a particular celebrity I wanted to see. I just couldn't connect with Jay's sanitized brand of humour. I never disliked him...he just wasn't Johnny. Fast forward many years later and I've watched dozens and dozens of his Leno's Garage youtube videos...and finally connected with him. Not only is he a fellow gearhead, but I began to see the real Jay Leno. Down-to-earth...just a regular guy's guy. No network agenda. No TV personna. Just a guy...a guy you wanna hang out with...have a beer with and shoot the s**t awhile. Thanks for posting this vid nearly a decade ago - it was a touching moment that I could really identify with in regards to my own father.
That's the 1st time I've seen Jay's tribute to his dad.... since i saw it live on tv.... way back - when was it? - 1995, 1996? It's as moving today as it was then when i sat watching it in my tiny Studio apartment in Downtown San Francisco. Thanks so much for posting. In a world where the "sun always shines on TV"...... it remains Jay's best most heartfelt monologue & it deserves to be seen by millions more.

It was NBC that let Jay Leno go from his job initially. He didn't retire or pull a Brett Favre although it seems like he did at the time. He was pushed out by NBC for no apparent reason. Then they gave him the Jay Leno show. Then the Conan fiasco went down. NBC was to blame, not Leno.
Somehow i felt the conan incident was really a poor excuse for all the hate and jealousies to find a legitimate face...they went after him with all they had...
Yes, the Conan fans really needed somebody to blame for that mess, but now it's well documented that the *NBC* executives were the real architects of "The Tonight Show debacle. Jay was the fall guy for their mistakes, and, to a degree, Conan's mistakes, too.
Started seeing Jay Leno on Letterman , then I watched him take over the tonight show but always mentioned I mean always mentioned his parents , he is to private, won’t say it , he adored I mean adored his parents always on Letterman and the Tonight show Jay always mentioned his parents how they were doing , all I can say is what a good son I know they must have adored , loved him encouraged him to keep on going with his career . So sorry Mr Leno for your loss it’s hard to lose a parent , a dearly loved father or mother my sympathies to you and your family -may they RIP and I hope you believe they still are watching you from above.
Thanks for posting this. I recall seeing this in its initial broadcast, as others on this thread had, and it remained with me for all these years. I never saw a rerun of it, never heard anyone else comment on it, despite it being one of the most genuine and heart felt moments in late night tv history. A good dad, as Jay's evidently was, is one of the greatest gifts anyone could have.

Just watched Leno's interview on 60 Minutes. I thought for sure that they would have shown this clip about his dad passing away. It was his best moment in his 22 years. I saw it that night and did not see it again until I visited your post today on You Tube. Thanks for posting it!

I have always loved Jay Leno. It's not just the Italian thing, it is that he is rare and that makes him precious! Mavis is one of the luckiest women on the planet. I love his autobiography, "Leading With My Chin". There is a story about his parents that made me do the ugly cry. He makes this world better by being here. Most people never praise their parents enough. I lost my father last April. He was a good man, an unbiased and an easy going man. One that taught me so many things not taught anyplace else. I miss him very much and I can easily relate with Mr Leno about how awful it feels to lose them.

I spent too much time hating Leno because I was a letterman fan. Too young to realize there was never a loser in that battle and that Leno was still good...just different.

Thanks for posting this. Although I'm sure I saw it at the time, I haven't seen it anywhere since then, and it strengthens my regard for Jay. In all the years of watching him on TV, I never saw him badmouth anyone on a personal level, just as a generalization. I'm grateful, so I subbed and Liked.
I'm the biggest Letterman and Conan fan and am very angry at Jay for what has happened, but this is a very touching video. I can understand why Leno was popular with more people than Letterman through this video. He may have hurt a lot of people, but he has worked extremely hard at his job and I respect him for that.
I saw Jay do his stand up act in Vegas a few years ago and I was floored by the sheer amount of jokes he told, I'm guessing as many as three hundred. But perhaps even more impressive was that it was all clean and it wasn't at the expense of other celebrities or politicians. Jay never seemed to have a personal political agenda when he was on the Tonight show unlike today when it seems that , to one degree or another, all of the late night talk show hosts seem to be intent on bashing the current political environment.

You can see where Craig Ferguson got the inspiration to be open with the audience and viewers when both his parents died during his time as Late Late Show host.

Thanks for posting this. Although I'm sure I saw it at the time, I haven't seen it anywhere since then, and it strengthens my regard for Jay. In all the years of watching him on TV, I never saw him badmouth anyone on a personal level, just as a generalization. I'm grateful, so I subbed and Liked.

I'm the biggest Letterman and Conan fan and am very angry at Jay for what has happened, but this is a very touching video.
I can understand why Leno was popular with more people than Letterman through this video.
He may have hurt a lot of people, but he has worked extremely hard at his job and I respect him for that.

I saw Jay do his stand up act in Vegas a few years ago and I was floored by the sheer amount of jokes he told, I'm guessing as many as three hundred. But perhaps even more impressive was that it was all clean and it wasn't at the expense of other celebrities or politicians. Jay never seemed to have a personal political agenda when he was on the Tonight show unlike today when it seems that , to one degree or another, all of the late night talk show hosts seem to be intent on bashing the current political environment.
