If you're trying to compare the difference in sensor resolution, exporting the 40mp image to the same size/resolution as the 26mp defeats the whole purpose of the comparison. Of course the photos are going to look identical, you compressed the 40mp file that was originally 7728x5152 pixels down to 6240x4160 pixels. Side by side image comparisons like this should never involve any post processing, just the files you get straight out of camera.

Do a print and you won't see a difference.
@runawaybride2765 depends on the size and dpi of the print. Also depends on how much the final image was cropped from its original size.
Well, if I want to print at the same size ( let’s say 16x12) irrespective of the mp count of my body- then this comparison makes sense. If the print size is same, the high mp image might be even sharper
To answer your question if the lens will work well on a 40 mp sensor in another way: the 40mp sensor will work equally well as the 26mp sensor, but 40mp won't have any advantages when using lenses that are insufficiently sharp (i.e. the sensor would outperform the lens). Conversely, a 26mp sensor restricts the potential of high resolution lenses.

I changed my 35/1.4 for the 33/1.4, because I was annoyed by the nervous AF of the 35. I'm happy with the 33, but the 35 has more "style", both the pictures it makes as well as the look of the lens itself.
Agree, similar reasons why I upgraded my 23mm, but I just could not part with my old 35mm.
I got this lens and I’ll never sell it.
But of course I only got the XT1 and the 18-55 zoom and the 60 macro all the old ones.
Works fine for my slow paced photography of my life.

Another great video, thanks Jackie. The 35mm f1.4 was my first Fuji lens and remains my favourite. I have used it on my X-T5, but I actually prefer it on my X-E3. That lens-sensor combo produces images that I just love.
Thanks for sharing that. Now that I have the x-S20 as well - that will make a really lightweight combo. I could not see any difference between the two sensors with that lens.
Same here, however I use the 35 1.4 on my Xe2 and the images are something I just cannot explain. Much more so than my XT5.

Hi, Jakie. You shrunk the 40 mega pixel image down to a 26 mega pixel image and then compared two 26 mega pixel images. I very much expect two images of identical resolution to resolve the same amount of detail.

A few quick questions.... were the jpg shots at the end with the XT5 or XT3?
Secondly, did you notice much difference in the colours going from XT3 to XS20?
The images near the end of the video -- red Dahlia flowers and the stone hearts were shot on the X-T3 and the rest on the X-T5. I've not had a change to compare colors on the X-S20 and X-T3 but I have enough of both in my library to have a peek and see. I'll share in a future video about the X-S20. Thanks for watching.

Character is the reason I went for this lens; I'm rockin' the X-H2s, so the 40MP thing I'll be filing in the "nice to know" folder for some future camera body upgrade (but it IS nice to know ☺). That 35mm f1.4 (and the old Fujilfilm XF 18mm F2.0) are two lenses I'll never sell because of their character and the bloom you get when shooting into the sun. I'm fortunate enough to have the Fuji GFX 100s and a bag of lenses for it if I want crisp, sharp, clinical images for landscapes and the like, but when I'm looking for some wow-factor for portraits or street, it's the little X-H2s and that 35mm you're holding that's my go-to rig (with the 18mm F2 in my pocket for when I need wide).
And truth be told, I think those old Fuji lenses put Voigtlander's 23mm & 35mm Noktons for Fuji X to shame, which speaks volumes to Fuji quality

@@JackieDElia Well, the title roped me in - always interested in someone who'll stick up for the old standard lenses. I don't know why we're all so caught up with sharpness and nano-coatings and AA filters and the like. I could name a hundred old photographers whose work still calls to me, still graces gallery walls and coffee table books, and none of them had lenses that would be surgically sharp on a 40MP APS-C body (or that 102MP medium monster). I've still got an old 50mm f1.2 Nikkor manual focus - the AIs version, rabbit ears and all - and with a Fringer F-to-X adapter, it's magic, but that Fuji 35mm f1.4 lets light bloom just as nicely AND it has autofocus. One day, there will be a Fuji X-t7 or 8, with a 60+MP sensor, and that little 35 will still shine on it!
I love the 35mm f1.4 for it's character, but in my experience the 23mm f1.4 on the Xt5 is more sharper than the xt4, but saying that the 35mm f1.4 is very sharp too. Great video
I agree the 23 mm LM WR is very sharp on the X-T5. I just did a video comparing the old and the new 23mm. The 35 mm has a character to it that is not reproduced on the other lenses in my opinion. I don’t necessarily think that it is the sharpest lens but I love using it. The point of this video was to just express that you do not need to upgrade every lens just because you’re using the 40 megapixel sensor. And again all use cases are different depending on what you’re doing and whether or not you’re shooting professionally. I’m a hobbyist.

This is one of the BEST lenses ever in the Fuji line up. I think the difference will show more when looking at the RAW file. Either way I shoot my 35 1.4 on my Xpro3 and now with my XT5 as well, absolutely LOVE this lens. Beautiful painting by the way. 👍🏼👍🏼

Thanks for sharing. We are using very similar setup. I have the XS20 and XH2 and have also done a bunch of pixel peeping with 26 v 40 with “old” Fuji lenses and the new 40MP “approved.” While I totally agree with your bottom line (older Fuji lenses are beautiful and yield amazing results on either sensor), I do think the pixel peeping test here is backwards. If you take the new 33 1.4 and do this test (without cropping the photos), you will see a difference at pixel peeper sizes on the 40MP sensor. So far my personal experience is the only real advantage of the 40MP sensor and lens combo is more flexibility to crop in post and maintain exceptional resolution. If you are happy with your composition more or less as shot, I actually prefer working with XS20 and 26MP.

Hi! This is really interesting. I've found that the 35/1.4 to be sharper than some of the lenses that *are* on the '40 MP guest list', so I take that list with a pinch of salt. I suspect it's more than capable of resolving 40MP (though to be fair my Fuji body is an older - but still excellent - 24MP XT2, so I cannot confirm). What I can say is that in my experience the 35/1.4 is noticeably sharper than the 100-400 or 16/1.4. But this is only visible when shooting technique is perfected - the effects of a tiny bit of shake or mis-focus robs resolution way more than differences between the lenses. At some point I fancy getting an XH2 and I will try a similar sort of test then, but until that point I think the '40MP guest list' is as much a subtle nudge to get Fuji users to buy more lenses than anything specifically lacking in the 'not-on-the-list' lenses.....
I am tyred to hear obvious considerations like "....the new lens is much sharper, has more contrast, less CA, less distortion, less vignetting......". Your review is fresh and honest rather than academic. Sometimes, this approach is more rewarding for the owner (of the lens) and his wallet.

Most of the prime lens have no issue with the 40mp. The lens that have issues are the variable zoom lens of fuji like the 55-200 ( @200 ) is very mushy, you could test it out.

The 35mm 1.4 together with the 16mm 1.4 are my party lenses. Great fit if it needs to be longer is the TTArtisan 50mm 1.2, which is a Sonnar type. My magical Trio

Very helpful video! On my monitor, the 26mp image looks a touch sharper and the contrast looks a touch better - but that could come down to a number of factors other than just the sensors. That said, they are effectively so close that it's a moot point.
The 26mp only has >perceived< higher "sharpness" because the contrasting edges between the pixels are more obvious (by being thicker). The 40mp images contain more details. It's very sad that this kind of video still has to be created because people (in general, nothing against you) don't understand the difference between sharpness per pixel vs sharpness relative to image area/subject detail. A higher resolution sensor will always provide more detail, even when the perceived sharpness per pixel is reduced.

I recently upgraded to the XT-5, and none of the lenses I used on the XT-4 which is a mix of Fujifilm, Tamron, and Viltrox, work any differently. Edge-to-edge sharpness and integration with the new sensor are identical. Henry's a cutie.

I agree with you. Its only in specific heavy cropping that you might see a tad extra detail in the 40mp sensor and one of the newer flagship lenses. That said, I shoot food. As much as I love the 35mm, it near useless for food. The 35mm has a lot chromatic aberration that shows up in specular highlights on food. The more you open the lens up, the worse they become. The more you get closer to its minimum focusing distance, the worse it becomes. The 33mm just doesn't have that issue with the extra correction elements and the autofocus for burst images is a bit more reliable. For everyday photography the 35mm is entirely usable on the higher MP sensors.

So question was if 35 f1.4 will work well on x-t5 40mp sensor. Your test only shows that result is not worse than on 26mp sensor and that should be obvious without testing (at least in these shooting conditions). But does it fully resolve all 40mp? It is not in the official list of 40mp "capable" lenses after all. I wonder what result would be if you would take a photo with 26mp camera and then increased the distance by (EDIT: square root of) 40/26 factor (so approx 1.24... times) when taking photo with x-t5, then check both photos at 100%.
That sounds like a good test. The question for me was would the image look worse using the 40 megapixel sensor?
Actually one should in increase the distance by a factor of the SQUARE ROOT of 40/26 (=1.24) because the 40/26 megapixels refers to the AREA; the linear increase in resolution (i.e. the distance between pixels, both x-axis and y-axis) is square root of 40/26 factor.
That makes sense as the 40MP image width is 7728 and the 26MP is 6240, so 7728/6240 = 1.23846
So that would be 1.1136 distance. If I understand what you are saying, I would move the sensor back 1.1136 times the distance where the 26MP photo was taken? Are we to assume that the framing would be identical even though one image is 7728 wide and the other is 6240?
No, you need to back off 1.238 times the distance with the x-t5 (=directly proportional to the linear pixel increase also the horizontal x-axis). The view would get wider, but the sensor should be able to resolve the same details on the painting as the 26mp sensor that is 1.238 x closer to the painting. That is, if the lens is sharp enough... maybe at F4 or F5.6.
There is another way to analyze this test...
You don't see a difference between cameras with this lens, great. For me, that means that I will be happy to keep shooting with my 35mm f/1.4 (great lens!), and I will be happy to keep shooting with my 26mp X-T3 bodies. I get great quality and smaller files with no apparent loss for what 90% of most photographers use their cameras for.
Never considered going to 40mp because I've never been constrained by 26mp, and this test adds one more data point to that conclusion.

Thank you for watching. I think I mentioned in my previous video that the 40 megapixel sensor was not the main reason why I purchased the X-T5. For me, it was the battery and the better auto focus. I had already purchased the X-S20 this summer and having both cameras with the same battery was helpful. I will say that the auto focus on the 35 mm F1 .4 is better on the X-t5 versus the X-T3. If you are happy with your camera, there’s no reason to upgrade.

It was harder to crop it exactly than I thought. On the 35 mm 1.4 I could not see much difference. Of course the 40 megapixel is going to have more detail since the image itself is larger. Agree. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Mám nový 33/1.4, je jiste technicky dokonalý. Až potom jsem koupil 35/1.4, který je deset let starý. Je to neskutečný objektiv, který mě opět přivedl k používání "základní" ohniskové vzdálenosti. A vůbec není podstatné, že je pomalejší. Je to objektiv, který má duši, Vaším fotografiím dodá úžasnou atmosféru.

Thank you for sharing your findings, I think the resolving power of that lens will inhibit in seeing any improved resolution from 26mpx to the 40mpx sensor. Originally that lens was released when Fuji cameras only had 16mpx so even 26mpx is overkill.
Having owned both the 35mm f1.4 and now the newer 33mm f1.4WR what I found is clarity and image quality starts from the lens the sensor resolution plays a minor role.

Elias, My 35 1.4 is razor sharp wide open even on 40mp, so to say that there's no improvement over even 16mp is just straight up false (or you had a very, very bad copy).
Well its Fujis advice as well that only the newer lenses and some of the previous red badge you will start noticing a major difference from 26-40mp. Yes you may find a slight difference, maybe you got a banger version of the 35mm? but I go from printed samples printed on high quality media, I don't zoom int to 600%, the Xt2 gave a slight improvement from Xt1, but honestly I couldn't see any difference from Xt4 to my current XH2, If anything the clarity was slightly better on the Xt4 due to the slightly less noise the sensor exhibits. but true it may come down to small nuances such as lens quality control.
have got this lens and will definitively compare it on X-H2 vs. X-T3 (26 Mpix)

@@JackieDElia First try, on tripod with H2 IBIS left on: T3 much sharper. But then with flash light assist @f6.4, advantage for H2 over T3, viewing 354%(H2) vs. 403%(T3) --- crazy! I compared two areas, both a little bit off-center.
@@JackieDElia so bottomline: quite no difference. But beware of IBIS when your camera sits on the tripod!
@@carolingrimaldi "T3 much sharper." Did you compare perceived pixel sharpness or actual image detail? You're basically saying that the 40mp of X-H2 captures >less total detail< than the 26mp X-T3 which just goes against basic physics. Make sure that both tests were focused correctly. Ironically I find that AF-C gets more accurate than AF-S.
@@fotografalexandernikolis I focused with AF-S. Just said on first try T3 picture was much sharper. I used both cameras on a tripod, and I think IBIS was "on" when using the H2 on tripod --> this was a bad idea.

@@JackieDEliayes it was this video. I got a vague error a couple of times when I tried to save it, but in the end it saved OK. I inserted a few web links (URLs), maybe I wasn't allowed to do that?
Anyway, I wrote that the the old 35mm F1.4 is a pretty soft lens at large apertures (F1.4 and F2), so it would not matter what sensor is used, because either sensor outperfoms the lens.
I see that you used F2, but stopping down to F4 or F5.6 will certainly yield sharper results which might show up on the 40mp sensor but not on the 26mp sensor.
The 33mm F1.4 is significantly sharper than the 35mm F1.4, a difference that should be visible on the 40mp sensor.
Yes, I definitely noticed the 23mm 1.4 LM WR was much sharper than the older 23mm 1.4 on the X-T5 in a previous video, so I would assume the same using 33mm LM WR vs 35mm 1.4.
I will take a peek at 35mm using 5.6 on both 26 and 40.
Seems like you proved you need to upgrade your 35mm to the newer 33mm so that the 40Mp will show improvement. Or maybe you proved you don’t need/desire 40Mp. I agree you have to print big or crop a lot to make 40Mp worth it.
Actually, for me the 40 MP was not the reason that I upgraded the camera. It was for the same flip screen, bigger battery and the better auto focus. The whole reason I did this video was just to let people know that you don’t have to upgrade your lens if you don’t want to. It’s not a requirement for the larger sensor. @@JackieDElia All good reasons to upgrade. But logically, if you are already happy with a lens’s sharpness on whatever camera you have, you would of course get at least that same quality on a camera with more Mp. More Mp cannot hurt a lens; it can only unlock more resolution for a lens that has more resolution. In your case, it seems the 35mm didn’t have more resolution to unlock, which is why Fuji felt compelled to make the 33mm. But Fuji also decided to keep selling the old 35mm because plenty of customers love that lens and will continue to love it.
Someone did mention here in the comments that if I had stopped down the lens a bit more to say 5.6 I might’ve seen more of a difference. I plan to test that out.
But if you use the lastest verison of this lens and use it on both sensors you'll see the difference.

There’s definitely not a huge increase in sharpness but for nine years old - I’m very happy with the performance. I’m wondering if they’ll be that much of a difference when I test it with my brand new 23 mm 1.4 lens that is optimized for 40 megapixels. Thanks for watching.
sorry: for me as a working pro: there's no magic in this lens...(I got it nearly 8 years) - maybe my Sony Zeiss 1.4/50 or the M Summicron 2/50 . but for sure my Canon FD 55/ 1.2 Asph. ....

If you don´t reduce the resolution of the 40 mp sensor theoretically the lens provides a higher resolution than the same lens with the 26mm.
Every lens performs better with higher mp than with less mp, because it is recorded with more detail.
So with every lens you have it will theoretically improve with a camera with a higher resolution.
But of course it is possible to gain more detail with a lens which is optically better.

Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts. I have the new 23 mm and I’m going to be testing that lens on both cameras. I’ve mentioned this in a few other comments, but I was more concerned with could my 35 mm lens still perform at least the same on the newer cameras. And it does.
Nothing magical about it. Find a good inexpensive Pentax 35mm 1.4 from decades ago and an adapter to Fuji. Fuji makes great lenses but so have others.
