A video review of the Fiskars hatchet. Similiar to the Gerber axes as well. See this and other reviews at www.thetopgearpicks.com. Thanks for watching.
these gerber/fiskars axes are unbelieveable for what you pay. i was set on a gb forrest axe, but settled for an equivilent fiskars at a third the price and couldnt be happier! picked up this hatchet and the x27 splitting axe i was so impressed
i really love the balance and weight on these fiskars axes. doesnt get stuck too often in the wood either. really lets it fly right through the wood you're cutting.
Done my share of work with it too, very nice tool. I've seen a guy sharpening a pencil with Fiskars axe and heard that he tried his axe on his beard (and it actualy worked) ! Precision edge have a nuance though - if you accidentaly hit something hard (eg. axe slips and you hit ground with stones in it) it will leave dent and you won't be able to remove it by simply using sharpener. So take care of your axe and you will be using for a long time.
I use a carbon copy of this axe for 99% of backpacking trips and day hikes (a LARGE survival knife is the only replacement thats close in my mind) I also shove a fire steel and a small fixed blade in the end. Definetly worth the money, provided you dont mind sharpening it once and awhile. Im not sure why, but I find this mystery steel on the soft side, but very easy to sharpen. The small portable sharpen they sell works very well, and its cheap.
I personally like the coldsteel trail hawk for light wood work like what you did in the video, especially when carving, I take the head off and do light carving, even down to intricate stuff like fuzz sticks and making little figures. the best part is if the handle were to break in the woods(the possibility is always there), I can fashion one myself fairly quickly, you can't do that with the fiskars. it may not have the cutting potential, but it beats it for utility.
I have a Gransfors wildlife hatchet and this Fiskars. The Fiskars has phenomenal balance and feel in hand but even the factory bevel grind seems to chip easily, although I don't think the hardness is that high. If you guys get a chance and see one of these on the shelf, pick it up and handle it, it is really good in the hand. I use mine with my log splitter a lot because I cut a lot of dead standing Elm that has strong stringy grain and when I split it full stroke on my splitter I can hack the strings apart to finish separating the wood.
@CanItAlready Yes, the handle can be trusted. Fiskars offer lifetime warranty. No more replacing handles. That's a major reason for my liking the Fiskars axes.
It's not just"similar" to the Gerber Axe, it is the EXACT SAME axe. Fiskars rebrands thier axes for Gerber. In fact they own Gerber as their outdoor sporting gear division. Fiskars also rebrands one of their larger axes for Stihl. The only differences are the brand name marked on the handles and the fact that the Fiskars one has part of the handle coated orange. Can be made very sharp!!
well we have the short one and long one......they are both great...they have been on dozens of campouts, canoe trips, and atv camping.....they are great....
@thetopgearpicks That would be because the Fiskars axes are made in Finland, but the Gerber ones are not. Both are basically the same, but the country of origin is different.
@thetopgearpicks Both of my Gerber and my Fiskars say Finland on them, they are the exact same product except for markings and color. One Gerber hatchet is made in China, the one that has a small knife in the handle, it might be the one that you looked at. All the other Gerber hatchets and axes are rebranded Fiskars Finland products. Unless something has changed in production very recently? Might have.
Nice video. I'm a big fan of Fiskars axes too -- currently own four of the full size and two hatchets (plus the handsaws with the sliding blades are pretty spiffy as well...) Just wish they would put out a proper belt sheath for carrying that hatchet.
I remember seeing a cartoon as a kid in which Bugs Bunny or some other character lathes a whole tree down into a toothpick. At 4:00 , it looks like you tried to do the same thing!
@losteden I don't know the HRC, it is soft, but I think it is good in some cases. The hard edges are not durable, so I don't always recommend them to everyone. The Fiskars holds an edge fine in normal camp chores IMO.
You forgot to mention that the Fiskars Axe and Hatchet products are guaranteed for life! The handles have flex and can go through just about anything. If the handle ever breaks or the head ever comes loose, Fiskars will replace it FOR FREE!!!!
I'v used my for over 3 years. It hasent letten me down. Also own larger fiskars that is hollow and older than me. (16) I like them for the lightnes that hollow handle gives.(u can also store stuff inside of it and insert bit of cord thro the handleholes
I saw one of these in the local hardware shop. There was the hatchet and one with a longer, 2ft handle. I thought the longer handle one would be great for zombies!! haha
I saw the truck pic too but in my research I have seen the Gerber Sport Axe. It has a thicker/stronger handle which makes me feel a lot safer. Have you tried that one at all? Also, aren't they the same company???
@thetopgearpicks thanks for the video. it looks like you have a bit of wear on the plastic at the side of the head... is that something that would be a problem with this design?
@thetopgearpicks ok, but your axe is not X-SERIES? your is standard model? they talk now about xseries is the best etc, but i think standard and X series are the same :S, the splitting axes cut trees ou chopping well?
I noticed there are some icons on the handle that seem to say that you shouldn't chop down trees with it... though it's hard to tell what they mean. Anyone know?
Timber! They should make something you can slide into the handle and store small things like matches and some dry wood (for travel) so you are ready for shit.
when you're chopping into the trunk, it looks like you are using your arm muscle to follow through, like it would just bounce off if wielded by a wimp like me. that's just the way it is with such low weight.

Had on for many years and its still good, takes and edge well and holds it well..It`s light, capable, and cheap... can`t go wrong with a fiskars....!

I worked on the factory edge for about 2 minutes with a DMT stone and i got a razor sharp edge...great tool!!!
short but effective review, mate!
You just convinced me to buy a Fiskars.
Thanks for uploading! Cheers!

I live in Finland (where Fiskars is from) and those are basically the only axes you see here. For a good reason!
@CanItAlready
Yes, the handle can be trusted.
Fiskars offer lifetime warranty. No more replacing handles. That's a major reason for my liking the Fiskars axes.
Agreed... well done! Direct and to the point with clarity and accuracy.
I will make a purchase of the Fiskars Ax as a result.
Thank you.
WOW!!!! That is one fine axe!!! I like the way you cut to the chase. Make more videos and I am ordering one online.
@losteden No, this one was the Fiskars Sport Axe, not X series. It was not a splitting axe, the splitting axes had a thicker head.

I love this hatchet I tried to find one this light with the cutting power, also doubles as a knife its awsome
@thetopgearpicks That would be because the Fiskars axes are made in Finland, but the Gerber ones are not. Both are basically the same, but the country of origin is different.
I wrapped the handle in that squishy-grippy sports tape for tennis racquets or golf shafts.
Big difference as the stock handle can be slippery.
This thing is a beast. I'm ordering one now!
Thanks for the video.
U can get an good shief for it, at least in Finland.
It is made out of rouf nylon and has an beltloop for carrying
Wow! You made fast work of that tree! Nice axe ... thinking of getting a camp axe.

Nicely done! I will be purchasing one of these based of this video!
You forgot to mention that the Fiskars Axe and Hatchet products are guaranteed for life! The handles have flex and can go through just about anything. If the handle ever breaks or the head ever comes loose, Fiskars will replace it FOR FREE!!!!
thanks for the review i wish there were more like this one!
They do, it's called ingenuity. DIY I'm storing 100 Ft of paracord in my X15 (24'' chopping axe version of this hatchet) and plugging it up.
finally someone who knows how to use an ax!
I'v used my for over 3 years. It hasent letten me down. Also own larger fiskars that is hollow and older than me. (16) I like them for the lightnes that hollow handle gives.(u can also store stuff inside of it and insert bit of cord thro the handleholes
nice axe.. i have this one i use it to make kindling,, so sharp!!! And i was cutting outside at -48F haha.. so im glad it made kindling fast!!
Nice choice!
Best axe in the world, and it comes from Finland
I saw one of these in the local hardware shop.
There was the hatchet and one with a longer, 2ft handle.
I thought the longer handle one would be great for zombies!! haha
I have the same axe it stays sharp and can down a tree quick I use it to plane as well.
I have same axe great tool would like to get longer one eventually unless I get a weterlings fist
@soxxpuppet I think it is a good little ax, hope you enjoy it!
@Raxarax Agree totally, but do think it should be noted.
i have this hachet and i love love love it. the only thing that beats it is the bigger version lol
Excellent. Thanks for the review. You helped me make up my mind and buy one =)
@LaughTonyLaugh I didn't find it a big issue in bare hands, but did feel like the grip wasn't particularly secure with wool gloves on.
@shark61111 its not plastic its fiber glass
its almost as tough as metal but waaaayyyyy lighter
I gotta admit, the hollow handle bothers me. I want something solid... something I know will never let me down.
@thetopgearpicks I own the gerber and it actually says fiskars on the head
I saw the truck pic too but in my research I have seen the Gerber Sport Axe. It has a thicker/stronger handle which makes me feel a lot safer. Have you tried that one at all? Also, aren't they the same company???
Great axe;) but I find it tough to get a good edge like you did.
@thetopgearpicks thanks for the video. it looks like you have a bit of wear on the plastic at the side of the head... is that something that would be a problem with this design?
i have one of these and i love it
@thetopgearpicks
Nice vid!
Fiskars owns Gerber
And short after Fiskars bourgth Gerber - Gerber had their these axes
@thetopgearpicks ok, but your axe is not X-SERIES? your is standard model? they talk now about xseries is the best etc, but i think standard and X series are the same :S, the splitting axes cut trees ou chopping well?
Nice. I was just looking at one of these in a store today and wondering about that hollow handle and whether it could be trusted.
@zarud98
And hatchets are generally alot cheaper than a just as capable knife of the same good steel
@loki1066 , show some respect, he's as good as most.
Just bought a Fiskars X10 for £19.98 at Chiswick B&Q. They are hanging on the wrong peg in store, should be £31.98.
@thetopgearpicks Not trying to disagree or anything, but soft metal is not always a bad thing...
Great vid!
I have the same, greetz from Holland!
Nice axe i think i am going to buy one
i got a gerber 14 inch sport axe for $39.99. Every where that i looked they were more than that.
@westernhunter38 @thetopgearpicks Gerber burned me with their axes. My old one says "Fiscars - Finland" the new one says Taiwan
I noticed there are some icons on the handle that seem to say that you shouldn't chop down trees with it... though it's hard to tell what they mean. Anyone know?
Timber!
They should make something you can slide into the handle and store small things like matches and some dry wood (for travel) so you are ready for shit.
25 dollars?? here in switzerland they go for around 50 swiss francs. 1franc is approx. 1 dollar
thubs up for testing on a dead tree unlike some of these other guys.
when you're chopping into the trunk, it looks like you are using your arm muscle to follow through, like it would just bounce off if wielded by a wimp like me. that's just the way it is with such low weight.
Have you tried the Buck 757 camp axe?
I wish I got a bunch of dead trees in my backyard to test my knifes and axes
a fine axe, but nothing like a Granfors Bruks
i love fiskars
Do you know of what kind of steel is made? thx.
@losteden Not sure, sorry.
oh hahaha i thought you said ''you could use this end to put a little kid in''
@losteden I have a smaller version and that is 55 HRC :)
hey the head is? inox?
@danelolivaw Not sure, sorry.
good vid bra
FISKARS axes best axes ever.
how good does it hold a edge ?
nice
omg that thing is sharp
my gerber says fiskars finland on it there the exact same thing
In Finland Gerber is cheaper, and Fiskars is higher quality.
...um isn't that a hatchet sir?
HRC? maby 50, edge retencion very bad
Why kill that tree? plz next time just review with a dead tree plz thx
Gerber is owned by Fiskars so no wonder they look the same.
@Sceme1991 jaaaaa vitut kyllä nyt kaikilla on mökillä jne. yks vanha puuvartinen paska, josta todennäkösesti tippuu terä aika ajoin :D
Good skills,
Go show 'nutnfancy' how to use one.
Buy an Estwing Hatchet. American Made. An Estwing will outlast these plastic hatchets. You could pass your Estwing on to your Grandkids.
Thanks for that Man XD
this makes me wanna go out, buy a jeep and go camping...
Yeah!
finnish quality,
