The inexpensive Fiskars X7 is a 14" hatchet that splits wood like a champ and is super cheap for the beginning bushcrafter.

Bought one of these Fiskars X7 hatchet $25. Picked up an Felco fixed blade arborist saw $20 on a closeout. Picked up an Mora Kansbol around $45. That's at the $90 mark for an triad of tools that can aid in firemaking, pounding stakes, nails, cleaving an elk carcass, cutting wood and food prep. It's the most bang for the buck I've ever acquired. Throw an Leatherman or SAK on a belt or pocket and a Worksharp tool in the pack and go outside. Economy perfection

I've partnered an X7 and a Corona folding saw for years... saw to cut and X7 to split. It's a tag team that can't be easily defeated. I routinely split logs up to about 8 inches in diameter with the X7 and although it requires more muscle it's possible to split even larger pieces. I've beat the shit out of it and it still performs.

Thing about Fiskars axes is that they are made to chop wood, they are not made to be all around survival tools. Steep wedge allows for really good splitting and axe does not get stuck. While light handle means that all weight is at the top, so you get maximum stenght delivery at the blade.
And I think for most people this is what they want their axe to do is both at home and outdoors. You would have your knife to do more delicate work, and you can still use the axe blade in pinch to do stuff. While I said it's not all aroubd srucivak tool, I think it's really good survival tool, just not all around.
For me personally, utility and effectiveness of fiskars beats traditional axes in most situations. And it's not like it's aome disposable item, for most people this axe can last lifetime, or at least some decades.

This is not the X7, which is still in production. Although sold as an X7 by willfully ignorant retailers this is the 7550 hatchet. It lacks the heavy teflon paint on the head and the orange rubber overmold on the haft. The 7550 was actually developed as a budget version of the X series.
Still a good tool and I love my 7550, my X7s and my old 7850 hatchet that Ive owned for years, these things last just fine in real cold weather as well.

I actually wanted the one with the rubber handle but they did not have it. I just assumed they sold out of the older version. Even other reviews on CZcams call this the X7. There is a guy that compares his old X7 with the new model which he calls the new X7. Thanks for the heads up. Regardless my 7550 (X7 ;) serves me well.

@Weird Science I've only recently been on a knife lusting binge, spending about $3K in the last three weeks on Bark River knives (plus an A1 Pro Fallkniven), so I'm not afraid to spend money on truly great equipment. But I wouldn't spend $200 for a piece of hickory and a hunk of stone-age appearing iron, when I can get the same equipment, in hi-tech fashion, for $20. Now I'd be more than happy to spend $200 for a hatchet -- if it were one using FIskars hi-tech, synthetic hanging method, with a tough, super-steel (say 3V) steel. But...not for what I'm seeing in the market today.
I also have to say that I'm an older guy, and as such I recall a LIFETIME of frustration with true piece-of-shit scissors that hardly worked then, one day, walking into a Walmart and buying some Fiskar scissors for a few bucks that worked like freakin SPACE SCISSORS. So part of my respect for Fiskars is based on that. But, for hatchets I have a Fiskars and a Schrade (about $30, IIRC) and they work fine, and they take (and do a fair job of keeping) a near-razor edge. And also, after a lifetime of seeing wooden handled axes get loose and broken, I decided to embrace Fiskars axes for the same reason I embrace their scissors -- a successfully modern take on older, crap technology.

    • @GetMeThere1

      Mora 👉 knives.
      Fiskars👉 hatchet/axes.

      Relax Clyde.
Fist off, literally, NOTHING Mora makes Sucks.
You should probably try one. Or talk to Anyone who actually has one.
Unlike some Fiskars PoS or pretty much any other brand that makes a lightweight camping axe, these are a Mora. And that means tough as nails and able to take a Beating

Holy hell, you need to go back to school my man. I'm talking back to grade 1. It is also obvious you've never used one, the steel is just fine and there is no shock or vibration through the handle whatsoever.

Fiskars X7 and this all black version are my favorite hatchets.
They are excellent. Using them is pure bliss.
