One of the greatest live performances of all time. Firing all all cylinders.
If someone from another planet or whatever asks me "What is music?" I think this is possibly the best answer you could provide.
Knopfler made everything look like air guitar. So light in his hands.
Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have a couple of new fans. Welcome to the family, Andre and Dominika!
Yep! They get it!
Dire Straits is the shit! Period. Sooooo goooood live. Sooooo unique. Mark is the most nonchalant badass guitar player. Wow!
Knopfler is a guitar god , but what a shift that drummer put in ! Brilliant
Love your reactions. Knofler is the king. So many years of joy.
Seeing people watch this for the first time is so awesome. It's an absolute masterpiece. Mark Knopfler is a musical genius. Absolute demon songwriter, guitarist and producer. One of many incredible songs he's written. Dire Straits is one of the most unique and biggest bands of all times. Mark Knopfler has it all and he's crafted an amazing career over 45 years and counting. He's clearly one of the finest musicians to have graced this wonderful life. Superb reaction
when the guitar speaks the lyrics thats when you know there is a genius thats toggling the strings what a performance just awesome !!
I was at this concert in 1983 at hammersmith odeon London they blow the roof off probably the best thing ive ever witnessed. Fantastic band 🇬🇧
Me too! ❤
That drummer is a beast
You can just tell by the way the band are smiling at each that they know they are playing above themselves and are on fire they know they are going to give the crowd something they will not forget
Wow!
What lovely sweet gentle people.
Terry Williams on drums going crazy. His father was in the audience watching him play for the first time! Absolute magic. Great reaction!!
Terry Williams on drums is phenomenal !!! Mark Knopfer on guitar is one of the best in the world !!!!
This is MUSIC! This song is part of music HISTORY! One of the best live performances EVER in the history of music! Do you see the energy, do you feel the energy? We don't see this today anymore, sadly....imagine going into this concert and having the TIME OF YOUR LIFE, your heart beating at 1000bpm and leaving there with a smile in your face! Queen's concert LIVE at WEMBLEY was like this also and there are a few others! Those were the days! 70's and 80's were the best!
Great reaction. I must have seen this 200 times and every time it gives me goosebumps. I am in my 70s and it's great to see people that have never seen it before. Thank you.
Love Dire Straits. They are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.
North eastern English band
I listen Dire Straits My whole life and My favorite song Is...........on every street, down to the watterline, skateaway, ladywritter, private investigation, brothers in arms!!!
His drummer is wicked good 👍👍👍
TERRY....GREAT....
The drummer is amazing.
Yea .... I love to see others enjoying great music !
still one of the greatest Bands in the World!!
Mark knopfler a special guitarist if you think this is "out of this world " react to in my humble opinion the MASTERPIECE "BROTHERS IN ARMS ".IT brings me to tears everytime.
Beautiful 🎶🎶🎶
Agree. Timeless.
Mark has haunting style and you know it when you hear it. Not many can replicate it.
Me too and I still don't know wky it makes me tear
I think ya man might struggle with that one, mr Pickles. I certainly do, and i'm emotionless !
God I wish Mark would just call band back together for a tour. They'd sell out stadiums world wide. Generations love this band.
The absolute best performance of this song. The best part is seeing how much they fun they had performing.
Welcome to the world of the great guitar virtuoso Mark Knopfler, a real artist who composes, writes lyrics, sings and plays the guitar in a unique way!
Another choice is the song Telegraph Road from the same concert named Alchemy
Would agree... Telegraph Road live is next to go....
@@andrejbrumen8739 Absolutely.
This is the best version of Sultans of Swing ever.
Mark's guitar solo is SENSATIONAL.
Mark Knopfler is left-handed but plays right-handed. Therefore he imparts more force on the guitar neck strings, in this case using the Fender Stratocaster, by plucking more gently with his right hand.
MK was the first to introduce fingerpicking on the electric guitar.... it's his hallmark.
I LOVE HIM.
Grazie per la bella reaction
Siete una bellissima coppia 🤍
LOVE
Teresa from GENOA -ITALY
I listen to this song every day
Awesome reaction guys big hugs from Sweden i actaully learned to dance to Direstraits back in late 80's. My father used to put my small legs on top of his feets and move with the music so i learned rhytm. My fathe died 2017, 70 years old Everytime i here a Direstrait song im taken back to that precious memory and im 42 years old today. Thank you guys for doing this reaction with me.
Apart from everything that has already been said about this Epic masterpiece and the band, just highlight the incredible contribution of the Drummer 🤘
This was a great performance by Dire straits on of the best live performance's I have ever seen, thank you for your reaction
The drumming is sick
Sick?
@cliffwheeler7357 that means "awesome "
@@leelanham5581 Not in my dictionary. Just say awesome then. I suppose it's reminiscent of back in the eighties when people started describing a band or a piece of music as "bad" when they actually meant good.
Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists there is.
It was nice to see how the music crept inside you and you completely
of which was caught. I watch this clip from Dire Straits a lot, but I feel the same as you do.
🤩😊👍
This is one of the greatest hits ever and it came down like a nuklearblast in The music world 1977 i think. They played this masterpiece everywhere..on the radio. TV...clubs..beetches..you name it. Mark Knopflers gitarrsound and his fingerpicking was something new..Dire Straits became one of the greatest bands ever. Thank you for reacting to this pure Joy piece of music history.👍👍👍
They were the biggest-selling band in the world around this mid-80s period.
Yet this couple have never heard of them. Go figure........
I have been to literally 100's of concerts in my life and Dire Straits was top of the list for me, incredible musicians. Telegraph road from this same concert is unreal too
Guitar virtuoso Mark Knopfler does not use a plectrum, it is all done using his fingers. Although Knopfler is a different type of guitarist, I think he is he is up there with Gilmour as one of the best!!
Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitar players ever . You have now discovered two of my favourite players along with David Gilmour .
You really should check out Telegraph Road by Dire Straits from the Alchemy Tour . Its outstanding .
What a lovely reaction, just love your honesty and immense joy in your faces as you went along that dusty journey in your open top car listening to to one of the greatest bands ever to have existed. I was very lucky to see them live in 1985
I just love you two.I am a 66 year old man that grew up with this music and sad to say stuff from the 70s and 80s is all I listen to today They made magic back then. Now you don't have to have much talent to be famous.Music has no heart like it used to.
I got you man.
You never mentioned (The drummer) I personally think he was just amazing. Name (Terry Williams). "Amazing Amazing Drummer"
Mark Knopfler, Lead guitar
Hal Lindes, Rhythm Guitar
John Illsey, Bass Guitar
Terry Williams, Drums
Alan Clark, keys
And for these shows 22/23 July 1983 Hammersmith Odeon London.Tommy Mandel, guest keys (the guy dancing)
Dude, Can You tell me something about Hal Lindes, the rhythm guitar!, "cuzz i Never heard anything about HIM?.......thank You!!!
Loved the reaction. Telegraph road, Tunnel of Love, and Romeo and Juliet are also great. ❤️
Fantastic reaction!! Thank you!! Telegraph Road from the same concert is epic!! Take care and best wishes from the UK
The one and only Terry Williams on drums..
Insane. The entire band is totally ridiculous.
,mark Knopfler is smooth AF on the guitar.
Mark is an incredible guitarist. His singing is not so complicated. In a sense his guitar is the singing voice and he plays rhythm guitar with his voice.
I definitely echo the calls for "Telegraph Road" (Alchemy live) followed by the official video version of "Brothers In Arms". Loved your reaction to this. Be well.
Loved your reactions. So positive and wonderfully delighted by Dire Straits and the brilliance of Mark K!
It would be so cool to have you two as my best friends, so adorable together!
I only saw them once in around 1990 it’s still the best gig I ever saw, my favourite band and guitarist in one.
Dire Straits were a fantastic band, and what more can be said about Mark Knopfler except that his 'reason for every note' style of playing is just unique and special! Mark started out as a newspaper reporter and because of that background he has an exceptional way of telling stories in song ! It is always worth paying attention to his lyrics, and I'll say that he is still my favorite lyricist today! I loved all his work with Dire Straits, but appreciate his following solo albums even more! Cheers!
Master glass in drumming
Absolutely first rate solid dummer ❤
Yours has to be the best reaction I've ever seen, thankyou.
Two of my favourite bands Dire Straits when they started in the early seventies, and Nightwish live, first demo 4 songs,
Got the long version on vinyl, the guitar talks👍🎶🎶🎶
Legendary concert by a legendary band. "Telegraph Road" is a must.
I love that in every video, when she speaks, he always looks right at her, and gives her his undivided attention, without interruption. Maybe it's manners but I think it's just love and respect. Reactors forget that the viewer is often just people watching, and it's as much about that, as anything else.
One of my Top Five songs of all time....and Mark Knopfler's guitar work in this performance of it is just insanely good.. I was fortunate to see them three times in the early-mid 80s- some of the best shows I've seen.
I agree. The other four spots are by The Beatles and Pink Floyd.🤣Although "hotel California" by the Eagles might be knocking on that door...
Telegraph Road is also a banger from this amazing band from the past. Greetings from Sweden
I'm so happy that you react to my most favorite live performance by the Dire Straits!
Second only to Queen at Live Aid, this is the the greatest (but one) live rock performance in history!
All the memories that came flooding back. Sitting in café "Drinkwinkel" in Vilvoorde, when everybody was still alive, except for Werner who died in 1977. A lot of others have passed away since then, but we had such good times. Friends stay by the wayside, but the memories remain.
Fantastic reactions people , I just love your appreciation for Dire Straits. I got brought up with them in the 80s.
Grew up with their music ❤ My Dad was/is a big fan and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mark's guitar playing 🙏🏼
It's always like his guitar is answering or singing along with him 🤩
"Brothers in Arms" makes me cry EVERY SINGLE TIME and I'm sure I heard it at least 1 million times in the last 39years that I'm on earth 😅
So good to see genuine reactions to DS, they are awesome. How can anyone not enjoy? Plus you two together are priceless, love it guys.
Best performance I ever saw
That was a virtuoso performance by the entire band. Knopfler is an amazing talent. He did the soundtrack to an excellent film you should watch called LOCAL HERO. Loved your reaction.
I like you guys. You are sweet and show a deep appreciation for quality musical performances. Keep on doing your thing! (Chris, Ohio, USA)
A heartwarming reaction to an amazing performance.
LIVE AID 1985 version is the Best ! ( in my opinion ) good reaction as always ! ❤❤
Loving your reactions! Mark Knopfler is one of the World's greats. I think one reaso people love this is that the whole band is having such a fantastic time as well. Try 'Telegraph Road' from the smae cncert, you won't be disappointed.
One of the last Guitar Gods!
I Want to Thank You Both for putting a smile on my Face every time I see you. So Again, Thank You !!! 😀
You really need to check out Telegraph Road (alchemy live). In my opinion it’s THE best performance by Dire Straits..an absolute masterpiece. My favourite song by them is Tunnel of Love. The alchemy live version of this is fantastic and it has a five minute instrumental outro which is absolutely phenomenal…pure brilliance and my favourite outro of any song ever. Don’t miss out on these 2 😊🔥🔥🔥
Great reaction! Always been one of my #1 Dire Straits tracks. Mark Knopfler is such an incredible guitarist - plays with such groove, and shall I say 'swing'!! This is a great version with the extended solo.
They have so many great tracks: Brothers In Arms (is a must, but have a tissue handy - it's an emotional one!), So Far Away, Money For Nothing, Romeo & Juliet, Private Investigations...that should give a good continuation path! Cheers.
This was the band's first UK chart hit. Inspired by a band lead guitarist Mark Knopfler saw late one night in a bar in South London playing to a few people. The song is a narrative. He tells a story in his songs.
Brothers in Arms was inspired by the Falklands War in 1982 when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands.
Telegraph Road is a social commentary about the USA and how the Telegraph brought about change prosperity and progress then came the depression job losses and poverty. In the USA the Telegraph Road is a major highway through the state of Michigan.
Mark's unique style of guitar playing comes from blues style. He picks the strings with his thumb and two fingers. With his lightning fast left hand he can bend or vibrate THREE STRINGS at the same time.
On tour he uses a lot of session musicians.
The drummer for this tour was welshman Terry Williams. Bass guitarist is a member of the original band Dire Straits John Ilsley.
Support guitarist was American Hal Lindes. On Keyboards Alan Clarke and a second keyboard player Guy Fletcher.
Absolutely love this. Probably one of the best live recordings ever. Terry Williams, the drummer’s dad was in the audience and had never seen him playing with Dire Straits. That’s why Terry gave one of the greatest drum performances of all time.
“Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink.”
― Douglas Adams, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
Telegraph road from the same concert is also good, you guys should check it out 😃
Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, but is more associated with Newcastle in North-East, England. Worked in Leeds as a journalist. Found the band Dire Straits with his brother, John Isley, and Pick Withers. Now mainly retired from the music business, and lives in Chelsea, London.
😁☺👍 Gives me chills every single time!
Fantastic band and love watching these 2. They really appreciate great music 🎶
Delighted you have both discovered Dire Straits and the one and only Mark Knopfler,
I have been so lucky having their music in my life for over forty years and counting, Incredible band sadly now disbanded, But what a legacy, 'Alchemy' must go down as one of the best ever live albums, Terry Williams drums on this album are incredible,
Dire straits have such a vast back catalogue of quality music of which I'm sure you are both now finding and enjoying, Mark Knopfler continues to improve (if possible) with age like a fine wine, Enjoy and keep searching and thanks for giving the honest reviews
Its hard to believe this performance was almost 40 years ago
I was at Hammersmith and it was amazing, I was 18 and thought it was normal!Mark was brilliant, they all were, but the stand out for me was Terry Williams on the drums
Now recto to the Alchemy version (live ) of Telegraph Road, that was the encore to the show
Great reaction! This was released, in the middle of the Punk boom, in '78 and was predicted by some, to disappear, but history says otherwise!👍
Musical perfection. 🙂
You know this song is old, from the line, "An old guitar, is all he can afford." In today's instrument market, the old ones are the most expensive!
I have this live version on my playlist when ever I’m out and about I listen to it one of my favourite bands. Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed it this version is the best for me. By the way Ren plays without a pick as well he said it hurts after a while.
Dire Straits live Basel 1992! - Best!!! ( every song Is the Best version )!!!❤❤❤
So cool indeed! It was great fun to see how much you two enjoyed my favourite rock song of all time. I've been listening to it since it came out some 40 or so years ago, and I never get tired of it. It's a masterpiece.
What a priceless reaction... your constant head banging, your smiles throughout and the little looks of excitement you kept giving to each other!! Wonderful.
I've heard this song hundreds of times, but your honest reaction made it so enjoyable. Thankyou both 😊
F*cking Awesome!
This took me back. I think the original version of this song came out in 1979 but this, but this "Alchemy" version was 1984/85. In '85 I was working in Qatar and my brother sent me the Alchemy double LP on tape. Our days off were on a Friday and my abiding memory was of this playing on the car tape deck while I drove from Doha over the desert to a quite beach at Dahran which was a very dusty road. It's hard to believe that was nearly 40 years ago'
You know, real British people, believe that anyone, from anywhere in the world can be Brits. Music is everywhere here in the UK from weekend bands, karaoke, to choirs that sing pop or classical music and everything in-between. I am really pleased you love Dire Straits.
Terry Williams on drums brought a harder rock sound to Dire Straits when he joined. Check out the video of him as "just the drummer in the band". Such a laid back guy. Mark knopfler is an absolute guitar hero as well at all the other band members who are at the top of their game at this time in the 70's & 80's. I saw them in the UK in early 80's twice. Magnificent. I still cry listening to Brothers in Arms.
I don't like electric guitar music in general, but I love Dire Straits.
Mark learned his style on an acoustic, and started fingerpicking travis style (which is something I love to play myself). This is probably why his electric guitar style is a little bit unique, compared to most electric guitar players.
That drummer though!!
He does like this plucking way of playing the guitar usually with his thumb and first 2 fingers
Definitely recommend Telegraph Road. Dire Straits were big in the late 1980s-early 1990s so I grew up with their music in high school.
Mark Knopfler is the king of making guitar playing seem easy and effortless. As a counterpoint listen to Gary Moore who puts so much effort and emotion in to his playing. His cover of The Messiah Will Come Again live in Montreux is exceptional.
