Acorn to Arabella - Journey of a Wooden Boat - Episode 43: Bolting the Backbone Together
Vložit
- čas přidán 6. 09. 2018
- The backbone is bolted together! We finally have some timbers bolted together and what a great feeling. It has been a long journey up to this point, with a lot more to come, but we can finally start seeing some of Arabella's shape coming together.
We had to make our own fin head bolts which was quite the learning experience. This project is all about finding different ways around tough situations. We needed a good way to bolt the stem together with a bolt that had a low profile head. As buying them was a bit more expensive than we liked, we figured we could figure out how to make our own.
Now that the backbone in together, we are working on setting up the molds and the rib bands to be ready to steam in the frames. That day is coming right up. The weekend of September 22nd and 23rd. We will be working all day and invite you to come by and watch the frames go in. This won't be our typical open house with food but rather an opportunity to come and watch an interesting part of the build in person. Check out our website or facebook for more information.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve and Alix started as amateur boat builders building their own 38' wooden boat in their backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when they will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

This just popped up on my page after watching today's episode. It's great to see how far you have come
This entire series is freaking art; from the music, story, narration, cinematography, people/craftsman, the drive and determination, it's pure Documentary. Anyone who thumbs down this doesn't know wtf they're down thumbing. This is pure art.
You guys are making history - a video record to keep alive a tradition that goes back centuries. 55 years ago I spent a year working for a boat yard, batch building half a dozen little 26 ft sloops each year. There were still dozens of similar yards operating around the Solent (UK) but down from hundreds, 50 years before that. Not one survives.
This gives your work a significance and importance that goes beyond your own satisfaction. I commend you with all my heart.
Mick Cane you should watch Sampson boat co. Leo is rebuilding a sailboat all by himself. He's a young boat builder from Britain rebuilding the boat in the Pacific northwest.
STUBS 1960
Thanks. Another great guy. Think my pension can afford to Patreon both these projects. Not much, but every little helps.👌🏼
i feel this so hard
Thanks a bunch!
Leo sure is doing some great work!
I watched the launch today, then this popped up on my feed. Had to watch the spine get connected again.
I just received my Acorn Arabella T shirt. I can't believe how many people come and say there also watching your boat build along with others who are now interested. Cheers
What I love about your channel is the creative thinking that has gone into your boat build. You have improvised your shop, tools and construction methods to suit your resources, human and financial. I have worked my entire life with my hands and I can really appreciate what goes into something like this. I think you are doing a fine job, and this small detail of making your own fin head bolts is a good example of the ingenuity and creative thinking that has gone into this build. Thank you for this series.
Thanks for the lovely comment!
Like others in the comments, the boat launch and Winter Sailing popped up in my feed and now I’m binge watching. As a sailor and wood working enthusiast, This is exactly what I needed. What an incredible story and beautiful journey.
the number of people watching and wanted to help just goes to show that men have an urge to explore and create. hopefully more and more people realize this and start acting on it- I think it would make us much happier and more fulfilled over all.
We agree!
It is funny to go back and see where it had come from. God, I’m getting old.
Ive watched all your previous videos , many back to back, over this summer, and am now up to date and waiting in anticipation for all your next vids... Its pretty awesome now to feel im watching you guys closest to real time on your fantastic adventure!!!!
Still watching weekly with the rest of us?
Love the sound of that LOOOOONG bolt being seated. Just a like a piton being seated in rock, the pitch of the ringing gets higher and higher until you KNOW; that thing is SOLID!
Thanks for letting us watch this beautiful boat come together.
I love watching every hammer blow, every turn of the drill, and I watched every piece of lead being added to the keel. Awesome skills, and thank you for sharing your gifts, dreams, and spirit with us all. I put together a GB 42 Classic a few years ago, and there was nothing like what you are doing available yet online. You are helping to inspire, and educate other prospectives to fulfill their dreams as well. Thank you.
Got to admire you two, over two years and at last it’s beginning to look like a boat. If I’d been a few years younger would have seriously took time out and spent it with you guys. It’s been a lot of hard work but the end result will be a beautiful handbuilt boat. Well done so far and keep up the good work.
This just came back up on my feed. You've got a great crew now, but I really miss Alix. He better be there at the launch.
As a mere watcher, I can only imagine your excitement and proudness, finally assembling all your hard worked parts together ! Félicitations, les garçons !
Whoa! „I just walk you through the process.“ I love you for that. Such a clear, complete description, presented in such a calm, friendly tone. I am absolutely impressed by how well you guys think everything through. „Flying before the plane“ that is what a good pilot needs to do. Know where the plane is supposed to go / where it will go. That is exactly what you are doing.
If you do not know, you prototype your process (as with the lead processing). With such a great approach to planning and doing, what could possibly go wrong? All the best!
How can we not be in awe of those who built ships that make this look tiny with no electricity? Congratulations for not only doing this, but for sharing also!
Thank you once again boys. My girls seem calm down their screaming when your videos are on. Who knows? 18 years time they'll be building their own boat!
The sheer amount of prep work you did to get ready for this build was crazy. Glad it's finally starting to look like a boat, so you can see what your hard work is turning into.
Awesome Progress!! Glad to see you made it through the drilling of the keel and assembly of it's components. She's coming together beautifully! Bravo Gentlemen!
I am totally pumped for you gentlemen. This has been a great ride and I’m blessed to have watched you from the start. The feeling of getting to a point where it begins to take shape must be totally awesome for you two. Thank you for sharing the experience.
Hi Guys, she's really starting to come together, I can only imagine the feeling of accomplishment you are feeling, I smiled all through this episode well done. Thank you once again for bringing us all along with you. I'll see you next time. best wishes from the uk
I am so impressed . This is an art form of shape, wood products, precision, and passion. Love watching it men.
Best video yet guys! Do you realize how many of us are planning to come to her christening? Keep up the good work.
Thanks!
No clue but we hope to have a bunch and throw a really fun party!
Inspiring stuff. Cant wait to see it launch, i congratulate you both on your perseverance and passion. Cheers from Australia
Every time I watch one of your video's I learn something new. What a treat! Thank you.
Good to hear!
What a great milestone! I can see her in my mind for the first time! I am sure you guys could see her the whole time, but for me, this is the first time. Beautiful! Thanks for the videos, keep at it!

Great video love the assembly after two years watching, good work guys.
Does everyone following the progress of this awesome build have a smile on their face while watching every video.. or is it just me..? :D
It's really starting to look like a thing now guys.. great work all round :)
It`s not just you :-D
Yes sir!
Absolutely!

I'm just rewatching some of my favorite milestones. I remember watching this video when it was posted. I thought, " WOW!! She is starting to look like a boat." Now seeing her almost ready to launch, I am blown away!!
See you June 17th, 2023😊
🙌
Fantastic. Brilliant to see the shape of her coming together
I rebuilt 3 sailboats single handed in my day, a 14 a 28 and a 36. Big job on all of them but nothing like this. I'm happy to see there are still craftsmen-sailors out there. Best of luck on your build. It is a passion, It is awesome. Respect!
Thanks!
Congratulations on the milestone gentlemen. I've loved everything so far and cannot wait for the next big milestone.
Is it only me that feels sad for the wood shavings coming out of the drill bit? That wood was part of the boat, going to go on global adventures maybe for the next century, and right at the 11th hour, having gone from trunk, to plank, to laminate to being part of the boat’s structural heart, they then end up as sawdust on the boat shop floor . . . Another great video lads!
Fantastic job guys! It's great to see the high level of ingenuity and precision you two guys (and help) are pouring into this project. Hard work does payoff in the end. Wish I could be there.
That aft deadwood timber work from last vid was amazing!!!
Fellas, this is just art, a pleasure to watch and learn, thanks for posting ..!
Congratulations! Wow, just wow! Such an awesome project! So cool to follow along and see the awesome progress. Great job on all the videos. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Wow so many teasers of things to come.
Thanks for sharing and congratulations on the progress you've made so far
Simply mesmerizing , I really enjoy your fascination at what you's are doing , GREAT JOB BOYS
Amazing talent, skill being shown time and time again. What an amazing video of true craftsmanship, pride in your work!
Guys, Less is not more! More, more more! The more the better, especially details. More of everything please!
those counterbores with the shaft are really slick - perfect alignment every time.
True, but also they could have planned ahead and did a pilot hole that fits the guide screw of a normal counterbore bit, then drilled the main hole after.
Amazing how pieces of wood come to shape, great job guy's
WOW is all I can say Guys... What a relief getting completed to this point 💪👍😌
Go guys go it is so nice to see it take shape after following you for so long thumbs up.
At last..... the leviathan starts to take shape. Keep up the good work guys.
That thread cutter is a thing of beauty
It really starts to look like a boat! Love it!
Hot dog!! Man that came together well, great job guys it looks beautiful like a piece of fine furniture. Great foundation for what's to come next. Congrats to you all.
Just as enjoyable to re-watch these old episodes as it is to watch the new ones. The boathouse looks so weird in these. WHERE DID ARABELLA GO?! Oh, she’s not there yet. Man you guys have really come a long way!!
Bonjour,
Thanks guys for taking all the time to share the fantastic journey : )…..
Without doubt the best channel on CZcams....

Nice progress and process gentlemen.
I have been watching for a while now and I agree with Gene Lomas, I smile every time I watch.
Looking forward to seeing this on the water.
You two work really well together. The speed-up, slow-down sound editing on the stem bolts is a nice detail, subtle and effective. Well done.
You guys are freaking AMAZING! Loving all your creative solutions and beautiful craftsmanship!
This is fantastic, guys. I've been watching for a while, and to see the various bits come together in this way is delightful.
Another GREAT video !!! Love the work you guys are doing. Keep it up guys.
So happy for you guys!! Awesome job so far, keep up the hard work.
I love following this adventure. Great work!
Yall have come a long way from felling trees! I wont tell you what i thought first time i watched...i am a believer in arrabella today...congrats to you both!
yup
Hahaha
We are sure there are many, maybe most who doubted us at the beginning. It's been super fun seeing the reactions change! =)
This brings back a lot of memories. My father built a similar sized boat but he had no help and worked a full-time job. It took him 30 years to complete it. He started his boat on large lofting platform where he laid out the keel. He then built a jig that supported the keel in the air and upside down. After the framework was built and mounted to the keel, he threw a large party. About 40 men at the party picked up the boat frame & keel, walked it off the platform and set in the yard. They then turned the whole thing over, picked it back up, and reset back onto the platform. Every piece of wood on used on his boat was first placed into a large homemade trough and soaked for 48 hours in Coppo wood preservative. He passed away at 77 from cancer. I still wonder if it was exposure to Coppo all those years that caused his cancer. The smell of Coppo is forever ingrained into my brain.
Love to see it all come together, great work guys. Greetings from Holland
So i started following this when i was very sick and stumbled acrossed your project randomly on youtube. I dont know anything about boats. Nor did i have any intereat in building. But ive ended up watching all of the videos of this. The quality is awesome and the project is turning out to be very interesting. Keep it up!
Great job guys. Love the vids. Workmanship excellent. Envious? Er nah. Er yes very.

Wow I had to go back and watch the early videos Again to remind myself of the Process u guys developed for building this Boat from raw materials and TBH you have done a lot in 3 years it blows my mind when I go watch early videos again thanks from Sean in Vermont
YAY.. a good, long video.. thanks guys.. I'm gonna enjoy this half hour..!
looking forward to getting to see this later this year.. :)
Hey gents, I'm a discjockey on a big station here in Alaska, Classic Country 100.9. My son and I have enjoyed watching your build so far. I mentioned your project and youtube channel on the air today. Hope to see the Arabella someday, maybe in Prince William Sound?
Thanks!
Alaska and BC are on the hit list but we have a few more hours of building to do and a few sea miles to cover between now and then so it may be a while!
I follow Ran sailing the second video of thier alaska cruise should be out friday..first was incredible!
glad I just discovered this series and so good to see you building the boat...amazing how you made the bolts...
Attention to detail is amazing. Fun to watch.
Just want to say what you young men are doing is a true meaning of setting your site on a goal and achieving it. Stumbled onto this and will follow closely every step of the way. if I am ever in your neck of the would I would like to give you a hand if your need one.
Thanks!
Long forgotten skills need to be re learned. Excellent video
back before there was a www, it became apparent to a few, (certainly not to me) that, there could be a www, and that people such as yourselves, would be able to share knowledge, and experience, to a degree, and although they never imagined the extent that the www would be used to propagate delusion, I'm sure the quality, integrity, clarity, grit and pain that comes through on your channel must surprise them.
I would hope young people, all over the world, are encouraged by your story, to QUESTION CONVENTIONAL THINKING, and ask themselves, "wouldn't I be more help, to the world, and to my community, and to myself, if I tried to learn to think for myself?" You know, since, imagination is limitless?
BTW, fun to see the shotgun bore swab used to apply anti-foul.
Oh dear me "think for ourselves" you say?? What would our betters in government think? What would they say? Perhaps they'd hear of men forging barrels & locks & working curly maple. Casting lead balls mixing powder and cutting pillow ticking 4 patches? I'd bet they'd pee their britches and scurry into the woodwork away from the hard men that built nations away from prying eyes seeking to tax everyone....
Awesome, awesome, loving the work guys.
Cheers
From OZ
I commend you fellas, not only on your craftsmanship, diligent work ethic & positive attitude, but also on the fact that you take the time to respond to every question, no matter how many times they've already been asked & answered, or how absolutely ridiculous they are. (Note, please scan the comments to see if your ? has been addressed already, it takes less time than typing it again, AND seriously folks, enough about nipples & wondering who might be gay or straight or whatever, not to mention, again, asked & answered. Just take a few minutes and look.) I say we let these guys spend that wasted time making more great videos, that we all enjoy so much! Watching these "episodes" is like a mashup of my favorite TV shows, a heaping helping of PBS's "A Craftsman Legacy" with a lil'bit of good old "Kung Fu", a dash of "Gilligans Island", and only the best parts of "MacGyver" - all rolled into one! HaHa. Keep 'em coming, & thank you!
Thanks for the fantastic comment! The nipple obsession of CZcams baffles us.
Glad to hear you are enjoying following our journey!
I love it that you made your own bolts! Awesome!!!
Fantastic to see her starting to take shape
sturdy strong robuste and so cool ...thank you guys for your advices ...
Thank you for the awesome sound engineering. It goes unnoticed too often but I have never seen a channel that handled it better!
That must feel great.Lot's of working together. Thanks for sharing.
That counter bore bit is brilliant.
!!! A new video!!!
I've been watching your videos, and its nice to see someone building an old style boat! Hope to see many more videos!
Hello from New Zealand. I am loving the craftsmanship. Your 'can-do" attitude would make any kiwi proud.
Haven’t watched it yet but can’t wait to! You guys do amazing work! Keep it up!
Beautiful Craftmanship!!!.....Go Guys!!!!!
we are stoked that you are all so young
It would be much harder doing this when we are old! =)
Oooh, a bit of a teaser at the end there. Wonderful joinery, looking forward to the next episode.
There are more teasers to be found that surpasses the teaser at the end there :)
Beautiful, wonderful, amazing!!!
Oh and "Thank you Joe!" (That counter sink bit is one awesome custom tool!)
Great stuff
This is pretty awesome. Y’all are amazing at what you do.
oh yes Guys looking good love the work ,, thanks for sharing
This is so satisfying to watch. I joined around the time you put the boat house up and I greatly enjoyed how meticulous and careful you planned and worked up to this point. I'm so happy for you guys that you are finally at this stage, I just sit here grinning from ear to ear.
Thanks! A lot of people did not understand the prep time and wanted us to "get on" with building the boat. Good to know some saw the benefit of the ground work, it's now paying dividends!
