      Since there was no due deligence done on the API, its a win win for this dev company, as they get paid for the work they done, and the app "dies" because api access is denied.

      That is exactly what I was going to say. We spent millions of dollars on in house software and the FIRST thing we did was to make sure we had access to the data we were going to use.

      The problem is Caleb just dove into this with very little thought about the most important aspects of it (a statement of work confirming cost, approvals of API, etc). This app is a waste of time and money.

      There's a lot of things that the company should have done.
      They've been terrible at every step of the way.
      Suggested names felt like they were just created from a name generator
      The design his horrifically ugly. And a lot of it just looks like it was made by a teenager who browsed yt tutorials or paid someone a few bucks on fiverr.
      The lack of API approval.
      Etc etc

    Sir Caleb, If you're not approved for developer program access approval with eBay or Amazon, and can't find a work around for getting the data required (that doesn't include web scraping), cut your losses and scrap it.

      I tried commenting something similar about how much of a trainwreck this is to watch as a former software developer and got my comment deleted. And even if PriceCharting approves this now, I'm not convinced they would let him continue using it into the future as this app gets more press. Maybe they would do it for a licensing fee?
      He may have talked to resellers but he clearly didn't talk to someone who knew something about app development before starting down this path. I almost feel bad for him and hope it turns out ok.

    • @goggamanxp

      @@Carnitas123 I could see Amazon and eBay also rejecting the use of their API's given that the app will have functionality to sell games directly to Caleb. Ultimately, the cut that Amazon/eBay wouldn't get from a sale is more valuable than charging for an API call

    • @Carnitas123
      @Carnitas123 Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@goggamanxpYeah I had said in my comment that I thought Amazon might go for it based on it driving traffic to them though but you're right, once they realize he's selling an alternative way to sell inventory to them, they probably would pull their API. eBay lets all kinds of pricing apps use their APIs but none of them offer an alternative to selling there.
      Man this really is a mess. I bet he's publishing these cause he got some or all of the API approvals and think he's in the clear. But once this gets bigger, I wouldn't be surprised to see all three of them pull the API access unless he takes down the buy list feature.
      Not to mention I don't think he understands what it's gonna cost to maintain this app. He has talked a lot about not wanting to let people he doesn't trust into his business and here he is opening the door to needing to hire staff or at least manage a consulting firm outsourcing the maintenance for him.

    Software developer here:
    Get coders to get the scanning and API to work, before doing anything else. Cut temporarly out any feature that doesn’t have to do with scanning.
    When that works, add in feature after feature until either you happy with result or money allocated is gone. Do NOT try to go in and change features unless really really really needed after development of that feature has started. Good luck!

      The fact that they didn't suggest Minimum Viable Product is a little bit shady.... you don't go into an app like this trying to do absolutely everything at once... you start with the absolute basic features, then build from there, knocking bugs along the way. Either Caleb was SUPER insistent that he wanted it all at once, or the developer didn't educate him correctly.

  • @ItsAllDougAndGames
    @ItsAllDougAndGames Před 4 měsíci

    You're on to something here - you have specific games/platforms that are in your wheelhouse, you know, and you can effectively resell. There are some games/platforms that don't work as effectively with your business model, but, from time to time people want to send you. As someone who is always buying a specific niche that I know you pass on, I would potentially be someone interested as a buyer partner. I know others would also emerge to fill out the "buy list" beyond what you prefer to work with.

  • @yo.m.3967
    @yo.m.3967 Před 4 měsíci

    I guess what I mean is you probably don’t need an app to do that eBay, price, charting, Amazon. A website could handle all that stuff which people can access Safari via mobile. I think an app that just does all the bulk deals and you’re resale business still be worth it and less stressful. I still think that the website idea could be a workaround for the other element. Both entities separate have their own value to resellers and gamers I like.

    I know your a big fan of the lots feature but should prioritize perfecting the other features in my opinion. It’s more common for sellers to look for a quick flip for a couple games vs 20+ games.

  • @AltarOfGaming
    @AltarOfGaming Před 4 měsíci +1

    Its good that you are trying to implement your own buy list with the app, but I feel it's too much of a "being scared tactic". An app like this can be indispensable to someone in the other side of the world, or also your neighbour, that has no plans of selling any games whatsoever - or selling them to you. You are introducing a hugely obscure factor here (free months for selling you games), that normally wouldn't apply at 0.1% of the app's user base.
