Dam I just went out for 8.63 miles. Took me two hours fifty-two. minutes. This is my first trail ride and I am sixty. Have not ridden bikes for 30 plus years. Man, I experienced a bunch of what you talked about in this video. Some of the climbs I did not even have the energy in my legs to power through. I thought I would ride an easy trail but changed my mind. When heart rate hit 189 I was feeling it. My average was 153. Man looking to do it again next weekend. I went down twice. rock on a steep rocky trail I went tumbling and another rock threw me in the brush over sideways. Zero damage to bike or me.
Max heartrate of 189 as a 60 year old is nuts haha! Must still be fit!
Update man? 🚲
can i use this method to climb the corporate ladder ?
Not if ur a woman
Billy Mays OOOOOOFFFFFFF
Billy Mays
LMAO
Well yeah
@@billymays495 omg BIG OOOOOOOF
so basically, get fit.
So basically I need to lose 40 pounds and climb hills as a hobby.😀
rattrap 88 lose 40 pounds BY climbing hills as a hobby.
Good advice. I've started mountain biking before work for an hour 3x a week (running the other 2 days). Even though where I live there's not much opportunity for off-roading, its quite hilly which is a challenge at 5am but I can already see an improvement in my fitness and it means I'm quicker going uphill now on the trails. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger I guess.
I wake up at 6:30 with my fiancée to help her out with the baby, this helps me get up every day, I saw there were two videos today, stoked!!!
Technical climbing is one of the greatest cycling challenges I’ve ever encountered. I’ve climbed mountain passes on a road bike, but MTB technical climbs are like an argy bargy bunch sprint on a 21 degree pitch! I switched to 1x with a 11-42t cassette and this made it more manageable.
I have two problems with the gearing suggestion. 1. When talking about gearing, you also have to speak about wheel size. On a 26", you have to run larger driver gears, or smaller driven gears to equal the same as you would on a 29". 2. 1x11 is more than capable of any mountain as long as you have proper gearing up front.
I love everything you guys do. Keep them coming!
You are my masters!! I apreciate a lot your videos.
Great video with brilliant tips! Thanks guys! I just did a couple of fairly rough trails today with some (for me) steepish climbs and descents and I had to stop and get off my bike a few times!! Practice and persistence is the key I guess :) Gotta get my fitness level way higher!
U make the best MTV vids! Love you guys
Great , tips and coaching . Well done and thank you.
Gotta get up to get down...
Another good vid, thanx fellas.
Love climbing!
Thanks for the tips. One thing i do especially on a long grueling climb is focus on a point anywhere from 8 to 20ft ahead not looking ahead. The other thing i do is remind myself, its easier to ride than walk! Cheers
jaaayyy mark! Keep going with the triple setup, very cool
How can you do a video about climbing and not mention seat height?
Glyn Barr or mention what gears would help
@@DanielP2012 Gear selection is going to depend greatly on the specific climb, so there's little point in them suggesting "use a 34 tooth," because it might be suitable for where they ride, but not where you ride. That's something you'll have to figure out on your own by trial & error.
What about seat height?
Went for my first ride on my new mtb the other day. Was a tough workout and I'm a mountain trail runner! Every time I gassed out I just stopped for a few minutes until I caught my breath, then I started again until I gassed out again, haha! I'll keep riding and improving, I'm looking forward to the fitness gains!
yo yo yo it's Mc Scotty coming with a new mix tape, hit it: The gear selection is a major consideration! *clap clap clap* so inspirational.
I just got through my first mountain bike trail and it was very difficult. It was like 80 percent climbing and 10 percent descending but fun. It was brutal I got a fever later that night with chills so I over did it.
I find that I climb hills best when my blood alcohol content is at the ideal level to just get off and push the damn thing!
Two vids today. yesss
Thanks for the great video it has helped me out a lot :)
Thanks for the tips ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️👍
great tips guys 👍💪
Brilliant
I can climb most things on my orbea hard tail . But really enjoy the ghost slam e mountain bike makes the range massive lol
Very nice
This weekend I suffered a minor concussion when i restarted pedalling uphill after stopping and did a wheelie, falling on my back. Wish i had seen this video earlier.
neil is like the only one who does not seem like some kind of cycling robot lol. GMBN is so much better now
Awesome Video!! Where is it filmed??
Literally what i Need to climb up to any Uphilla
I live in the Adirondack Park, there are no flat trails. I’m 64 and got back to mountain biking this summer. My vintage hard tail was ready for an upgrade to the modern era of bikes, so I bought a Levo Turbo Comp EMB. With this bike I can ride where I want to ride with little concern when I’m down hilling knowing the next event is a hill climb. The thing about being a mountain biker is it is done in the mountains I’ve been doing this 2 wheels off road thing for 50 years and wanted to ditch the noise and weight not to mention the forbidden ride restrictions of off rode motorcycles and get back to my roots of the bicycle. After all the injuries I have earned in life, my chance of super fitness to ride a human only powered MTB in the mountains I live in….not probable, an EMB has gotten my passion back, I’m once again a mtbiker, not a motorbiker and all those places where the signs say “ no motorized vehicles “, I can now ride them without fear of a fine or worse, my bike looks and sounds like a bike, only the educated even recognize that it has an electric motor, but I generally don’t even see other people where I ride. Up and down…the very core of life.
1:36 unexpected front wheel lift hahahaha WHOA
awesomeness 👍
I've noticed you guys are always riding enduro bikes for your videos, even these on climbing. You made some comments about steeper geometry being better for climbing, which of course is true. But riding your enduro bike, are you ever in a long climb or something and regretting that you brought your enduro rig and not a XC bike? Or are you quite content with it on the climbs?
I'm relatively new to mountain biking and currently ride a XC bike. I love the fast descents and jumping (though I'm not great and still learning), but I still enjoy a nice climb. I'll be looking into trying out some enduro-style bikes myself at some demo days to get a feel for them, but I am wondering what your take is on them for local trails and the fact that climbing is a normal part of that. In general, do you feel over-biked, or are you just fine with the setup?
+Adam McAllister Great question! We all have and do ride cross country bikes and have some videos released and coming soon where we are riding them. It depends what your local trails are like, we all love riding the Enduro bikes, they are designed to be as efficient as possible on the uphill but shred on the downs and personally I am prepared to sacrifice the climbing efficiency to maximise fun on the way down. A great option could be a 'trail' bike something with 130/140mm travel, right between XC and Enduro, I'm on a GT sensor here which has 130mm of travel and it works really well... Hope that helps, Scott!
I have a specialized Fatboy SE it came with a Stock 10-speed gear I upgraded to a schram eagle NX T50 cassette cuz I live in Cortez Colorado
I spent the better part of 2016 riding exclusively on a 5 mile crushed gravel fire road around a lake. The climbs are very unforgiving, but the descents have you barrelling downhill at 26 to 30 MPH.
IMO, once you get to where you can ride a fire road without getting winded or sore, single track is a piece of cake. I started back on single track back in September after riding all summer on the fire road.
I actually started out riding the fire road because I wanted the speed on those descents, but it actually turned out to be an effective training ground for me; my leg & core strength was great because of it, and it made single track effortless.
Can you do one for climbing the US south west mountains where there is hard rock, sand, and 1500 feet descents.
Just thought I'd leave this here, helped me a lot:
It really depends on your physiology (most info out there is for cyclists (there for endurance athletes/people who function best in activities that last over 30 seconds), I keep hearing pace your self don't burn out. As a 99kg powerlifter who rides a monster hill on my way home every day, best way is to get out the saddle one gear higher than you think you need go hard and stop just before you are at 80-85% done (aerobic capacity). Give yourself a few seconds rest change down and then finish in relative comfort. Even with the break you'll still make it up there first. Don't do this if you are relatively light or primarily a "slow twitcher" I imagine you would have inertia problems due to muscle to bike ratio/gradient and / or anaerobic ability.
hello and good day!!! could you please do a video of climbing up the stairs of a building? say, 8 floors? thanks...
Hey mates,
Nice video as usual, I want to thank you because I improved a lot my riding technique... One question.. Where is the location on the video?
UK
Thanks bros.
Hi , I enjoy your videos they are great for finding out stuff. I’m 62 and very unfit and very overweight , I’ve just bought a second hand specialised enduro with 150 mm travel . I am going to see my doctor to make sure I’m ok to start riding. In the past I did a lot of miles riding but was much younger then. I’m going to start by riding along canals as there is plenty where I live but I’m very apprehensive because of my weight. If there is any advice you can give me about getting fit please?
Holly crap those tracks would be SOO fun on a dirt bike
Make a video on how to replace lockout cables. Please.
Thank you very helpful video, hey I noticed your GT Sensor, have you ever drive a gt Sanction? I just bought one, is it true the dog bone on gt's breaks and bushings wear out quick? Thank you very much!
gear selection when you live that single speed life!
Hello GMBN! I'm planing to buy a new bike, I'm now riding a hardtail with 100mm suspension. I considering buying a full suspension bike with 140mm suspension tough i found out that I like going more on trails jumping and do some downhill. Am I thinking right or do you have any recommendations?
Thanks
I climb far better than I descend, I think it's a confidence thing as it's far easier to remain in control going up than down, and the consequences of losing control going down are where the danger comes in. Another way of looking at it is that going up builds fitness, strength, and stamina, going down doesn't build much except speed and carries most of the risk. I just can't enjoy risky downhill sections as feeling like I'm about to die isn't very enjoyable for me!
Can someone explain me the definition of each individual of gears. I'm newbie in cycling, and i wanna know what gear i have to use when i'm with flat surface, and when i'm climbing a hill.
Hi guys! Are you planning to sell those gmbn jerseys? I really want to get my hands on one! Thanks!
yhea, definitely!
They are working on getting them available to use as soon as possible, apparently.
Nagy Martin go to description and the shop is there... you can buy the jerseys there. Hope I helped :D
I went yesterday my first ride on a pretty technical climb.. I got it down but I was in the easiest gear, and it was a little harder.. should I go into a little harder gear? Like medium?
i ride 1x7 and a 38t its perfect im getting faster times then my 3x7
Hard to believe how much this channel has changed.
This is the other one
I remember back in the early days when you had to use a carrier pigeon to make a phone call to let you know there is no shock or lockout in 1965
where was the open pine tree section filmed?
Brute force your way up there 😁
Whick bike from you 3 climbs the best? I love looking at that orange GT with the unique rear suspension
My brother have very low end MTB with 3x7 drivetrain in which the shortest chainring consist 24t and largest plate of freewheel is 26t on that MTB it's very smooth to climb any thing with no effort almost close to zero effort,,,,, is it really hard to climb on 1x if we compare it to 2x or 3x??
Where was this filmed? Looks a lot like northern Arizona where I live.
I am fairly decent at most trails, however I encountered a bridge that was elevated about 6-8 inches and I couldn't get enough speed to just pop over it, and it felt like I just ran into a wall. What should I do to get up and onto the bridge or anything elevated like that?
Climbing..? I like it.. i use trail mtb to boost my stamina in road bike cycling.. more power gmbn..
I just started mountain biking. What can i do if my pedals bottoms out on a hill? I have 27.5 wheels do i need 29ers?
Are you guys using platform pedals or clipless? Do clipless give much advantage on hill climbing?
So what about the spring suspension mountain bikes
?
+Justin F well if you have it on high your less likely to do a back flip on a hill while climbing because it puts more weight in the front tire
Can you address technical climbs on a single speed?
Are there any mountain bikes with internal hub gearing?
Personally, I've noticed that I go faster with more Raceface gear on my bike.
This would have been more relevant if your tall colleague was featured in steep and technical climbing footage. Because, for us taller (and heavier) guys it gets much harder. No, small thanks to industry prevailing STA and (short) CS geometry numbers. Pure physics.
EPO is what we need
+Hugo Charneca Worm drive
should show how to setup for a trail that is over a 25 degree incline, like a goat trail. have lots in my area that cause my front tire to float no matter how much the front fork is lock/compressed with me over the bars.
Sometimes you just can't keep that front end down. If its steep enough just pedalling will lift the front end. 😞
What about long steep technical climbs?
Hey GMBN how tall is the dude on the red bike and what size frame does he ride?
+Moose He's 6ft 2 and rides a L!
Can anyone tell me pros and cons of the different positions of the rear shock?
+Justin F Depen Of course... The different positions change how active your suspension is. If you use the lockout or climb mode then it's close to being a rigid frame or fork and is super efficient for climbing or flat track. When you are descending I would personally recommend to leave the suspension open/out of lockout mode as this will maximise grip, allow the bike to work and enhance your riding comfort. Hope that helps, Scott.
Wait, so at 2:40 what you're saying is you want to be in a more difficult gear rather than a lower gear?
Yes exactly. The easiest gear is not always the best one for any climb.
hey you mentioned that you go from 170- to 130 to locked out what fork is that and how does that work? please and thank you
it is the Scott Twinloc system.
what flat pedal did you use on this video
hey Neil, what model of bike are you riding in this video? I've never seen the option to adjust your bottom bracket before in the way your bike is able too.
It is a Scott Genius LT.
can you do a video on dh bikes climbing uphill?
Good luck
Rod Long lmao
It would be a video about the different ways to groan when climbing.
Do these tips work for
can I do everything that is done on this video on a trek 3700? "hard tail''
absolutely!
+Global Mountain Bike Network Thanks!
thomas the train
Im riding the same bike. It has 2 wheel bends on the rear and tire still hasn't puncture. I believe in it. I try riding it hard as my beginner skills let me around the city, I just recently rode the biggest trail challenge, in fall season with 20° F temperature with some small down hills and small uphills, and its way different. I first travel them slowly to make sure my path is safe from chunks of tree branches or big rocks, then I go back and ride it a little bit faster; quite challenging and maybe because I gained a few, i had more trouble keeping up high speed.. I did film, took pictures, and most of all, just enjoyed it all, Thanks be to God got home safe.. I'm looking forward to getting out more even in the upcoming winter season. I like biking as I forget about life outside of what I'm riding at the time.. Thanks for all your videos, i've watched almost all of them.
yup sure can, practice and stay seated for traction
2:45 I looked up this video because I just got a new bike, one with two or three easier gears than my last one and I just figured out the hard way that using the easiest gear is not the best strategy for all climbs
so, how do i climb this 23 degree hill?
I spend more time climbing than I do descending. I Have a 2x10 and live in the mountains.
Can you do a video about all the bike each of you have
+Peter Pan More pro Bike features will be coming soon!
Old skool triple for the win.....
Well it's a good job Mark has gone now. Pointing all over the shop like that could take an eye out
Are they running on 26ers in this vid?
I climb down hill trails all the way up with 28 -46
Can someone just tell me what gear I should be in because they're all pretty damn tough. I cramped like a mf'er this morning on my 29er and I gotta say...the next 6 miles were absolutely horrible.
Good god, someone in the mounting bike media recommending a 2x - or even a 3x! - set up. No fashion sense, I guess....
Want to become a part of GMBN
Do you wear anything underneath your dh jerseys? My TLD jersey seems too thin to just wear on it's own
+Spazamazz Depends upon where we are, I regularly wear a light base layer but sometimes riding in sunshine and warmer climates all you want is to wear nothing but a jersey!
can you do a video on the kona coilor
Scotty how tall are you?
Kashima coat!
and I'm here in a mountain town with a 1 by
Lol the ending is hilarious!
