    Gareth, I have not done sea fishing for fifty years. Started school 600 yds from the transporter bridge worked at Black Clawson & Saunders Valves both a couple of stone throws from where you were fishing. I never knew there was any good fishing to be had there until I seen your vids. Wow absolutely brilliant you have got me hooked.. Thank you....👍

      Thanks for the comment Chris, pleased to hear that you're enjoying the videos. Yeah it's full of surprises down there, I've had some great sessions over the years. Back in the day at this time of the year, we'd catch up to 30 Whiting a session and they were crackers, great memories. It's one of my favourite venues and I'll always fish it, for as long as I can. Like a lot of venues, not as productive as it once was but still great on its day. Cheers for watching, much appreciated! 👍👍

    Huge fan of these videos Gareth. Captures the spirit of the fishing perfectly, really well explained baits and rigs and generally just a pleasure to watch. You can sense the excitement. Thankyou for taking the time to make them!

      Thank you Tom, I appreciate it. I try my best to make videos that are enjoyable to watch, I probably put more of an emphasis on the watch than I do the fish, if you know what I mean. @@riversidewithme yeah that’s the exact impression I get. I enjoy the fishing but came across your channel and it was the ambience I enjoyed most. And you capture it so well. Sorry to hear you’ve been down with the Flu, I hope you’re on the mend! Tight lines for whenever you get out, I’m after flatties this weekend hopefully on the Douglas estuary, which feeds the Ribble up here in the North. A smaller scale Usk effectively, Flatties and Bass aplenty hopefully 🤞🏻 thanks again, Tom

      @@dalebrooke5683 No probs. So I grew up with the Arrowsmiths Bristol Channel Tide Table but in 2009, they stopped showing the heights in the old scale but if like me you still want to go by the old scale, Arrowsmiths tell you what you need to add. For example, you add 1.7m for Newport, 0.6m for Cardiff, 3.2m for Barry and 2.9m for Swansea. It's personal preference and doesn't really matter, I just like doing it the old way. Good luck for Wednesday, let me know how you get on.

      Thanks mate, much appreciated. So this is a venue for small and medium size tides, I wouldn't fish it on a large tide as the current can be too strong. I tend to fish two rods, one with a three hook flapper rig (size 1 or 1/0 hooks) and one with a 2/0 or 3/0 pennel rig with a big bait close on. No need to cast far as the fish are close in. You don't need a licence as you're fishing for sea species. Hope that helps. Cheers 👍👍

      @riversidewithme  Před 2 lety

      Sorry Ben, ignore that last reply, I thought you were commenting on the St Brides video! Tide is a perfect size for the Usk tomorrow. Just park along Stephenson Street, just below the dogs home. Then walk towards the bridge, past the dogs home and take a left through the gate onto the coastal path. Don't fish too close to the bridge as can be a bit snaggy, walk at least 100 yards and the ground is much cleaner, just pick your spot. Good luck 👍👍

    Thanks for the video always enjoy watching, I fish a similar river in burnham on sea, always dread catching a big bass and having to drag it up a steep muddy slope, think we cast too far sometimes it's amazing how close the fish are. Do you find farmed ragworm is any less productive as dug ragworm please?

    • @riversidewithme
      @riversidewithme  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks Phil, I appreciate it! Yes when I fish the Usk I never cast more than 30 yards as the majority of the fish are close in. I caught a 12lb Bass there in 1998 and that was just yards out. Where I live there's not many places to dig ragworm and so I only ever use farmed rag now and in my opinion, it's just as good as the wild stuff. Farmed rag used to be kept in tanks and the quality was poor but nowadays, they are pretty much wild as they are kept/bred in natural tidal pools close to the sea itself. The ones I get from my local tackle shop are superb quality and I can keep them for over a week if necessary. Cheers 👍👍

    • @riversidewithme
      @riversidewithme  Před 2 lety +1

      Thank you Arthur, I appreciate it. You can park very close to the bridge itself, along Stephenson Street. Then you just walk past the dogs home, take a left through the Welsh coastal path gate and you're on the bank of the river. Take your pick as to where you want to fish but I suggest you walk at least 80 yards up from the bridge as then the ground is clean and snag free. Best fished on smaller tides. As for bait, there are two good bait/tackle shops in Newport...Dave Richards and Garry Evans. I use Cwmbran Angling as that's a bit closer to where I live. Cheers 👍

      Thanks Martin, appreciate it! As for the mud banks, there are areas that are too soft to walk on and areas that are harder, depends which spot you fish. Where I was, there was a patch of harder mud to my left which I could use. Tide was 11m (9.3m new scale) but any tide between 11.3m (9.6m) and 12.3m (10.6m) and the water comes level to where you stand on the grass and therefore no need to stand on the mud. Personally, I wouldn't fish it on anything bigger than 12.5m (10.8m) as the current can be too strong. Cheers 👍

      That day I was using ragworm and the fish bait was squid. But you can also use Mackerel 👍

      You can park on Stephenson Street, just down from the bridge itself and the dogs home. Then just take a left through the gate and onto the Wales coastal path and you're on the River. You can fish anywhere off the grass bank, although walk at least 80 yards up from the bridge as then the ground is clean. Best to fish on smaller tides 👍
