Totally agree with your comments on gaming laptops. I use a Thinkpad as my getting-work-done laptop, and a desktop for anything serious. I've seen way too many gaming laptops die young to recommend any of them.
Usually manufacturers put Cheap thermal paste from the factory , making it easy to overheat and die early, cause there a lot of videos out there with gaming laptop having reduced -10°C or even -20°C ❄️ just by replacing thermal paste ❄️❄️❄️❤️❤️
Second they pump too much voltage in their CPU's and GPU's than necessary (Still cant figure why.)
modders and countless vids also proved you can reduce temps by Undervolting ❤️⚡🤟 if you dont want to open up and play surgery with a gaming laptop.

For gaming laptop with Nvidia graphic card, you can try to turn on Whispermode. What does it do? It limits the FPS to 60 FPS with more stable temperature at 59-60C. No need to tweak laptop such as undervolting, apply thermal paste to CPU
Agree. Thinkpads are very good daily drivers. On the more expensive side, Panasonic Toughbooks (semi or full rugged).

desktop for high end graphics, laptops are just the wrong form factor. The other issue with laptops is you are
generally stuck with the hardware you have, not easy to upgrade like a desktop. Excellent video.

Yikes, that video title scares me. I just picked up my 2nd ROG laptop a few months ago and I love it. My previous laptop was also a ROG and it worked great for 7 years until I dropped it and busted the screen. I could have spent the money and replaced the LCD panel myself, but I was already planning on replacing it soon.
Hope my new one doesn't have those problems, too.

i still use my old Asus GL552VW ❤️ a 2014 ROG laptop that still works till this day, just repasted it and locked the CPU to 20 watts❄️ (small performance loss)🤟 instead of letting it use the full 45 watts ofthe CPU's TDP⚡⚡🔥

The key is consumer based machine vs business grade machine. This goes for laptops and desktops.
I have a thinkpad T430 from 2014 that has never had anything done except mechanical hard drive swapped for an SSD. It runs amazing. I paid $200 for it used in 2014. T series was lenovos business grade line for many years.
Likewise I have a Dell Optiplex 3020... several years old. At least 5 years old. Again, swapped mechanical drive for SSD.... never another problem.
Buy a laptop or desktop at walmart, target, or bestbuy... your getting consumer grade junk. Some may last a few years... most machines from big box stores wont last.
Must thank you for saving money and frustration on not buying gaming laptop. So glad I built a PC.. I only use laptops for work related stuff and Web browsing..
Genius work here. Just my experience, my old Omen 7700HQ 1060 MaxQ laptop has been golden since early 2017. Its running a full-size 3-fan 3060Ti in an eGPU, having had a 2060 in the enclosure before that. Benchmarking runs just below the average of desktops for both these cards, and I'm still happy gaming on 1440p 165hz 27" monitor at 90-120fps. But after this, I don't think laptops are the way to go for gaming now, mainly due to Thunderbolt being too limited and not able to get reasonable performance from GPUs above the 3070. Next PC will be a self-build desktop.

The truth is, manufacturers rarely taken seriously about the electronic design and quality control of desktop(including gaming) products. Even some high end desktop cpus and SSDs have double digit fail rate. If you want quality product, go for enterprise class, at least bussiness class.

I totally agree with you Alex regarding your views on laptops for say gaming but let's say for example space is an issue or that they do a lot of traveling for work so a desktop is not practical.
Perhaps the better question to ask is what is the best laptop to buy in terms of its potential to be fixed.
If people are going to buy them regardless I'm sure they will will be happier knowing that if it does break there have a good chance of it being fixed when they send it to you for repair.
Without a doubt you know gaming on a laptop is detriment to the hardware, and yet without gaming on them there would be fewer customers.
I think it is more than fair that you provide great advice for gaming (get a desktop), and provide a service to those who just won't learn.

I think your right on with gaming laptops they do run hot and you are getting less for your money than a desktop, so if you dont need portability then the desktop is definitely the way to go..
but saying that I've got 2x i7 gaming laptops that I've had since they were bought brand new, they get used heavily daily one is an old MSI GE70 that the Mrs uses 16 hours a day - the only issue with that one was with the original battery itself failed after 3 years, and this one which I am using which is an i7/ gtx1060 MSI GE73 Raider 8RE which is only off when I am asleep or out of the house - I ditched the original sata M2 drive and hdd and put 2x nvme m.2s samsung & kioxia (toshiba) and a mx500 sata SSD I had spare, and went with 32GB of Crucial memory - this one can get really hot if not using cooler boost with games like Star Citizen, but seems stable and can cope with extended sessions even in the heatwave we had here in the UK, but I do admit I use small 1 inch blocks fixed to a board which sit under each of its feet to make sure it has enough air - the only issues I have had with this one is a frozen bios after a couple of the Microsoft updates - but the bios reset is easily accessible without disassembly from the underside, and the keyboard LED's the green portion of the RGB has failed on a number of keys - I have avoided changing it out as the keyboard is heat-staked rather than screwed or hooked into the palmrest, but functionally its still runs and works fine its been reliable for a number of years.
Love the recommendation on gaming laptops, which should I buy for gaming? None of them. Completely agree. Heat destroys everything. A laptop is just a big disadvantage to a desktop.
My G15 does pretty well when you keep the fans clean and apply liquid metal. 3yrs VR gaming going strong.

Personally I strongly prefer the Dell Precision line as they are serviceable unlike almost everything else such as having a removable gpu nevermind having things like sodimm and nvme slots unlike consumer garbage. As for Thinkpads some are ok while the rest is very so so while the lack of upgrade options and deleted features makes it hard to like them compared to much older models.

Hey boss, when you solder things like these motherboards, what temp do you set your soldering iron to? AND also what temp is your heat gun? Do you use the heat gun simply to keep the solder warm enough to quickly re-flow? I'm about to replace a DC jack plug on an older Asus Zephyrus laptop, and I'm just not sure what the best temps are to use. I assume I will also use Flux as I've seen you do in all of your videos.

I got a cheap EVOO gaming laptop from Walmart that's still going strong. I'm on my 3rd going on my 4th year of owning it.
Writing from an ASUS TUF Dash F15 laptop that is used in bad conditions, I would not have a problem replacing the MOSFETs whenever they would fail. But at the same time I have used a Clevo M571TU for the last few years, after it sat in the recycling bays of Germany, it was upgraded to the maximum possible, 16GB DDR3, GTX 280M, even installed a QX9300 into it because the big old chunk of metal is still running. Usually, unless something goes very wrong with these devices, they don't break for years to come. In some cases, 10-20 years, at which time they are well beyond the 5 years grace period regardless. This ASUS might be the first to be replaced after 2 years, because of needing more power soon, but remains a very respectable machine in my collection, afterwards. I had ASUSes back when they had the old EEE PC 701/901s, even overclocked one of those in recent years using resistors and feedback loop CPU voltage. Those run at double speed when overclocked, I even have the old BIOSes for them, shoutout to anyone who wants the old EEE PC 701 v4.00 bios, I have it, it's unlocked and custom LOGO'd ready to be flashed.
To me a laptop is for use when traveling or needing a portable solution. Otherwise desktop all the way. The laptop I currently have was bought used and it's an Asus ROG gaming model from like 2012. I've upgraded it by swapping out the older wifi G to a much newer Wifi 6 M.2 card. Gosh what a pain to get to.
I have a Sager laptop (Clevo) for 8 years, playing games almost everyday, no damage at all. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I, for one, can recommend Clevo-based gaming laptops!

I need my computer for business purpose only: coding, multiple vms, office stuff... My last Thinkpad served me very well for 11 years and is still functional, but a tad too slow for todays software. So I got a refurbished PREMIUM. Kids and wife have Thinkpads, too (used ones are affordable). You can get spare parts for.everything, if you ever need one.

I got myself a lenovo y540 i5 9300 gtx 1660ti brand new 2 years ago. Never had any issue. Undervolted and underclocked day one.I dont play on ultra but rather on high/ultra or 60fps, something that would not trigger the gpu fan to spin crazy. I have good temps. I could get more power out of it but it'll gonna get more stress by the heat for almost no gain and makes it less durable.
All i'd say, if you buy a gaming laptop, UNDERVOLT + only enable higher graphics when it's worth it, i mean, msaa x8 + fxaa x8 + aa x16 is kinda pointless on a laptop...
You are right, i also think that laptop aren't built for gaming. They called them gaming laptop, but they aren't built for it. The board, the heatsink, it is too small and they get to heavy or big. So better buy a desktop or build your self a desktop, so there is enough room, enough air to cool, and so on...great video. Greets

My Asus gaming TUF Ryzen 9 laptop died 8 months out of warranty (2 years).
We established that the PSU seems to have triggered the failure. Asus accepted that the PSU had been failing for some time (during warranty) but that an intermittent fault (it charged intermittently) was hard to prove... and replaced it... despite initially denying the out of warranty claim.
Unfortunately, replacing the PSU didn't fix the problem and Asus established the motherboard was also faulty. They offered to diagnose it for free... waiving the normal fee. When they replaced the entire motherboard gratis I was surprised. Perhaps they were willing to accept that a PSU failing during warranty killed the laptop? Either way they've just bought themselves some serious good will. They never identified what had failed on the motherboard... which is a pity as it's nice to know which part is problematic.
Mind you... it was a fairly expensive laptop (>$2K)... and we bought 3 of them. It was barely used, never moved and was attached to a UPS... so there's no good reason for the failure.
The only problem is that there's no guarantee that the laptop won't fail again some time soon.
In future we'll stick to buying second hand laptops for more modest prices... on the assumption that if they've lasted a few years they're unlikely to perish any time soon.

P.S. Only annoying thing about the repair was that the repair centre deleted everything on the hard drive... and it's going to take a long time to reinstall it all: A fair bit of technical software with fiddly licensing.
PPS. Desktops don't seem to have any of these problems: If they ever have a problem it's a minor expense to replace parts... but laptops are useful at certain times.

what is the problem with the ceramic capacitors? looks like it's the biggest source of error. are there cheap junk capacitors or have this kind of this problem
Hi Alex, what do you think about to use the solder mask under the pad strip to fix them on the board ?
Ideally you want the piece you're soldering onto to be as flat as possible with the board, putting solder mask under the pad would make it sit unevenly and the other pins would have to accommodate for the height difference.
No, because it does not cure, since it does not receive UV light. It remains liquid. It is not a glue.
The same thing happens if you put a lot on it, it hardens on the outside, but it remains liquid inside.
The problem being solder mask is UV Cured - the copper blocks the UV light.
How do you know what capacitor rating to use?
i think one big reason laptops fail is they are moved around and knocked into and bumped and a lot of motion inside of it where there shouldn't be movement making things fall off and break also after long period of high use causing it to become hot plus all the movement doesn't help them with out the proper air flow could it even get hot enough to weaken the solder after multiple heat cycles.... but there i go thinking again is that even something that sounds plausible or am i making shit up

so i think ive figured out the trend of why gaming / high-end laptops fail is because of the heat from cpu and gpu.. witch causes caps, mosfets, and other component's to fail, I've gone though 3 laptops in 7 years! all had mainboard failure but i got my eurocom laptop fixed after a mainboard replacement i decreased cpu clock speeds to stock 3.6 hopefully it lasts longer than 2 years this time!
You should include the type of cpu on the ASUS laptop, whether it be Intel or AMD. Would be interesting to see which fails more.
I was asking this about best laptop on other videos, i would give some suggestion to people who use their laptop for design/gaming etc like me, allow air flow, may be get a laptop stand, also it would be better to use laptop in air-conditioned room, keep the fans and heat sink clean, reapply thermal paste every 2-3 year, that may allow laptop to serve you for many years. i personally like to travel and work, so desktop is not an option for me.
I Have an asus rog gl702 laptop that i use everyday and game on it without turning it off and it still working after almost 6 years
I strongly recommend what you suggested about desktop pc cause laptops not worth they are not made to tolerate the heavy duty usage.
they can tolerate respectable usage such as medium in game setting RTX OFF and left open to cool down after use, which is why entry level is better, paying a 1000+ for a laptop with a high end RTX gpu in a laptop with RTX ON, i wouldn't recommend.

Which laptops are best servicable from your experience?
The two best laptops (I have experience with a lot of them) are
1. AORUS 17X (Intel 12th Gen)
2. ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 (14” Intel)
I would recommend the MAC, but, they are so damn expensive to repair.
You need a laptop if you are a mobile tech.
Laptops are good for mobility, I use mine at church for pre-post production work. Also depends on the space you have.

Agree with his sentiment about laptops. Desktops are better purely because of the modular capability and being able to replace the parts. Like a car, and the replacement parts for laptop isnt worth the effort in repairing mostly.

what is your experience with Lenovo Legion? It seems like ASUS, HP, Dell all have similar issues in their gaming setups.
HP and Dell are kind of generic for office, some models are not meant to be repaired or require some special parts, but they are overall good. Asus is fine, but they are focusing on 300W slim laptops, not good, but people want that, thats a problem, too much power in a very small space, does it work, yes, when it will go bad, as soon as possible. Acer are fine, but they changed some things, they can be very complex. Legion, in my opinion, not good as other brands. When you consider future upgrade, such laptops cost money, less and less laptops are offering that, because business people do not need that.
When you consider future and durability, things like changing battery, replacing keyboard and such, Legion are bad. On most laptops you can replace keyboard, remove older one, put new one, but Legion have that wonderful idea to bound one of 4 laptop covers with the keyboard. This 4 covers for laptops are expensive, in order to replace keyboard, you need to buy whole cover and keyboard, otherwise you will not be able to unbound old keyboard and you will not bound perfectly new keyboard. They got BIOS problems and such.
In nutshell, all laptops are made with same materials and components, same companies producing same caps, its about what cap from same series will blow in what laptop, usually for repairs comes laptops that are mostly sold. Its not question whats more durable, Kingston or Samsung, Elpida, Realtek, Intel or AMD, nVidia, Micron or SK Hynix, or capacitor manufacturer.
For example you get 100 gaming Asus laptops for repair and 10 HP gaming laptops, but at the same time Asus sold 10000 laptops, and HP sold 1000, so they are equal, its more about advertisement, more ADS, better sale, if its cheaper, you will sell even more units, with low price and high quantity, quality are big question.
I'm going to test out a 11th gen ThinkPad. Hope they last!

If they are using lead-based solder the smoke and vapors must not be breathed. Lead accumulates in the body and causes neurological decline, behavior changes, and reproductive problems. These are permanent. The body eliminates lead very slowly, so any exposure should be avoided. Your sister needs to find out what kind of solder they are using.

I recommended gtx 1650 laptops or at least 940mx ddr5 because they are low powered and you can game the whole day without having any issue.

I'm not sure the issue is with ASUS themselves, anything can cause an issue with the motherboards, ie running them hot for too long, then closing the lid so the heat cannot vent, constantly mobilised and shoved into a confined space such as a back pack after heavy load prolonged gaming time.
everything electrical fails at some point in its life cycle, there's no "well what about LENOVO or this make or that make", most boards and capacitors are made Widley from the same factories in Indonesia or China for many brands so blaming ASUS is a bit stereotypical.
ASUS have made some poor designed choices in the past with poor ventilation on there outer cases, i have 2 ASUS laptops and one is ROG GL703 from 2017 with a gtx 1050 and its had some hammer trust me, still running still works still games, and a TUF F15 2022 model which has improved ventilation and runs cooler with less power draw, the mistake some people are making is purchasing laptops with the high end rtx cards which will run hot, go for the entry level RTX 3050 or the GTX1650 gpu laptops, if your wanting to run games with all the bells and whistles enabled you really need to purchase a desktop.
ive had ALIENWARE AND LENOVO lap tops with the high end cards and had nothing but trouble with them so i feel going for lower power draw and cooler less demanding cards and run games at an honest in game setting not pushing the gpu then you will save your laptop.
n RTX 3080 in a laptop running raytracing is A NO NO, leave this options disabled your laptop will thank you for it.
i would only risk RTX on with a desktop equivalent, as much as the card is designed for RTX on i just wouldn't on a laptop, which values my point go for the entry level gpu based gaming laptops, the cheaper the better,£650 for the ASUS TUF F15 RTX3050,if it breaks then its not as heavy a hit on the wallet, im done paying a 1000+ for a gaming laptop.
