When I heard trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg come in, it sounded like he must have been influenced by Jon Hassell, who had been incorporating South Indian vocal techniques to his trumpet playing - eg. on Fourth World Vol.1 with Brian Eno (1980). He would bend the beginning and ending of notes by moving his loose trumpet mouthpiece in and out, where it would normally be attached to the body of the trumpet. Another big component of Hassell's unusual sound was his use of a harmonizer.

Very meditative, hadn’t heard this in years but I have it somewhere.
Edit: I wrote this before you finished the song… en(chanting). EMC albums usually are or can be atmospherical jazzy new age stuff.
I of course wouldn’t mind more from this or other albums but really, I would like Touch Me There. It’s not on Spotify but on YT. Frank Zappa produced.

Knew that sounded like Jan Garbarek!
Would love to hear your reaction to more of his work, especially Dis, my favorite song of his.

This falls into a category that I call "3 AM Music", music best heard when most people are asleep and you're the only one awake, and the lights are out, and the only light is from the street light filtering through the curtains. Magical music at a magical hour. My favorite L. Shankar album is "Pancha Nadai Pallavi" (also on ECM), on which Shankar plays in a more traditional Indian style, yet is contagious in it's joyousness. I love it when you try out these obscure recordings.

I never heard this music, but I enjoyed it a lot!
    Something to dive into. Thanks!

I quite enjoyed this - jfergs called it background music - I'm not so sure as although it is meditative I would find parts of this very distracting from any task I was involved in (in a good way). Brian Eno was mentioned below but this reminded me a little of some of the stuff Robert Wyatt was involved with in the mid 70's and although Mongezi Feza and Gary Windo were far more abrasive in their playing (what I have heard anyway) it taps a similar vein. Talking of Robert Wyatt - I know you came in for a lot of stick JP for playing 'Rock Bottom'!!!! - you could go on to the follow up LP 'Ruth Is Stranger Than Richard'. The song 'Team Spirit' co-written with Phil Manzanera and Bill MacCormick has a blistering sax solo by George Khan given a special treatment by Eno with his 'direct inject anti-jazz ray gun' no less.

Agree with other people mostly. I was sold when the sax kicked in. Made the song a little more interesting.

I find Jan Garbarek's playing rather tame and muted here, not as progressive as his earlier works with people like Keith Jarrett and others...

Pleasant enough, but doesn't really go anywhere. Background music. Would I listen to it again... unlikely.

To me, “background “ music is something probably more essential than others, I often put on soothing atmospheric pieces while I create art. I understand it’s not for everyone and I can see your point. Would I hear it again, I just did.

@@-davidolivares I quite like background music myself, it wasn't necessarily meant as an insult. But depending on the type, and what may be on your mind, I find it quite easy for it not to register after a while... It can then become quite superfluous.
